“A psychological thriller that grabs you by the throat and doesn’t let go, not even at its shocking conclusion.”–Vicky Tyley, Thin Blood and Sleight Malice

99 cents for a limited time. DRM-free and professionally formatted by Dellaster Design.

Identical twins vie for a family empire built on deceit, cruelty, and dark secrets–and one woman stands between them while another waits in the shadows.

DISINTEGRATION

When a mysterious fire destroys his home and shatters his family, Jacob Wells is pulled into a downward spiral that draws him ever closer to the past he thought was dead and buried.

Now his twin brother Joshua is back in town, seeking to settle old scores and claim his half of the Wells birthright. Jacob’s wife Renee is struggling with her own past and her attempts to salvage Jacob are driven by guilt and ambition.

As Jacob and Joshua return to the twisted roles they adopted at the hands of cruel, demanding parents, they wage a war of pride, wealth, and passion. They share a poisonous obsession with the provocative, manipulative Carlita, whose immigrant family helped build the Wells fortune.

Joshua wants other things, too, but Jacob’s desires are divided between the forbidden love he can’t possess, the respectability he can never have, and the revenge he is dying to taste. And Renee has dark motives of her own.

If only Jacob can figure out which of them to blame. But the lines of identity are blurred, because Joshua and Jacob share much more than blood.

And the childhood games have become deadly serious.

Kindle Nation Daily Free Book Alert, Saturday, October 30: Three Free Hallowe’en Treats, plus … the perfect way to begin a weekend of sheer terror with three Gothic novellas in one scary package from IncuBooks author Zoe Winters (Today’s Sponsor), and over 100 other fully updated free Kindle ebook listings

It’s trick or treat time in my neighborhood, and publishers are playing along by offering lengthy free previews of forthcoming novels as an enticing temporary fix for fans (in the case of two new James Patterson offerings) or as a way of introducing undiscovered gems (in the case of a free preview of an intriguing new Oliver Pötzsch thriller that AmazonCrossing has brought out just in time for Hallowe’en). We’re sometimes a bit suspicious of the implicit bait-and-switch nature of such deals, but we reap what we sow. During the past couple of weeks we’ve offered our readers substantial free excerpts from two Joe Konrath books that have moved with lightning speed up the ranks of Kindle bestsellers, so who are we to complain? So we’ll place three of these free previews at the top of today’s free listings, and if you don’t feel you’ve been treated, perhaps you’ll trick us by soaping our windows or wrapping our house in tissue….

But first, a word from … Today’s Sponsor
Speaking of Hallowe’en, I can’t think of a better way to begin a weekend of sheer terror than to share three of IncuBooks author Zoe Winters’ Gothic novellas with you — all between the virtual covers of one nicely priced Kindle book! With Blood Lust, it’s like reaching into the Hallowe’en candy bowl with your eyes closed and getting a handful of scary vampire treats. After all, in the end, it’s all about the blood….

Comprised of three novellas, Blood Lust gives readers a snapshot look at the world of the Preternaturals Series. And, unlike the free previews mentioned above, each of these tales is a full, self-contained novella. Here’s the set-up:

KEPT:
Greta’s werecat blood is already sought after to enhance spells and potions, but due to a quirk of her birth, her blood is potent enough to kill for. When her tribe plans to sacrifice her, Greta must ally herself with Dayne, the dangerous local sorcerer, the only person strong enough to protect her.
CLAIMED:
For a vampire, Anthony isn’t a picky eater, but he’s drawn to Charlee’s blood more than any other. One night, high from the potent magical blood of another, he claims his prize and loses control. Ashamed of almost killing the one woman he cares about, he wipes her memory of the event. When Charlee awakens with complete amnesia, Anthony is the only one who can clean up the mess he’s made.
MATED:
Because of the vampiric blood that has run through her veins since birth, Jane has been a target for vampires who resent a human being “kindred.” She’s forced to disguise herself as a vampire groupie to appease them and safeguard her life. When she’s abruptly given to Cole, the leader of the werewolf pack, to satisfy a gambling debt, she discovers the blood running through her veins has a far greater impact on her destiny than she ever imagined.

James Patterson Joins Stieg Larsson in “Kindle Million Club”

By Tom Dulaney
Contributing Reporter

October 30, 2010

Amazon.com announced Friday that James Patterson, the ultra-prolific author of over 65 books crossing many genres, is the second member — and the first living member — of what the company calls the Kindle Million Club.

Widely believed to be the world’s bestselling author, Patterson follows the late Stieg Larsson by almost exactly three months in garnering the distinction of having sold over 1 million ebooks in the Kindle Store. (Scroll down for our July 27 piece of Larsson’s achievement)
Patterson’s books cover the bookstore with titles in these categories: Suspense, fantasy, romance, historical fiction, and children’s.
Patterson critics like horror meister Stephen King snipe that Patterson couldn’t be carried in the “Literary” aisle.  Patterson responds by describing himself as a story teller, and points to millions of book sales as proof positive he’s got something good going on.
What he has going on right now is a new book featuring his popular character Alex Cross. Cross Fire, the full ebook novel, is available for pre-order at Amazon for delivery on November 15.
Another pre-order, acting as herald to the pricey Cross Fire, is Cross Fire-Free Preview: The First 30 Chapters. It’s free, will electronically appear on Nov. 1, and is published by Hachette Book Group.  Hachette is listed as setting the $ 0.00 preview price and mandating the “agency model” price tag of $14.99 for the ebook. Compare that to the hardcover price on the Amazon page for the book, now showing at $15.12.
On the hardcover book page—only–on Amazon (as of today), Patterson speaks to the online reader from a posted video. He sits in a comfy looking study, books lining the walls.  Questions appear on a black screen in white letters, then the video cuts to Patterson answering. Don’t rush off when the author finishes the answer, because more questions and responses follow.
Once more stepping into the free-fire between authors, publishers and ebook readers infuriated by a price anywhere over $9.99, the book is sure to intensify the “what’s an ebook worth?” battle.
According to the sticker prices currently on the ebook and the hardcover, listed on Amazon at $15.11 for the hardcover and $14.99 for the ebook, apparently Hachette and potentially the author think an ebook is worth 12 cents less than a printed book sandwiched between fancy covers, run through printing presses, stacked and warehoused and trucked and carried to bookshelves or delivered by human hands to readers’ doors.
Over his 33 year writing career, Patterson has published more than 65 books, an average of 2 a year. Recent years have seen the pace of his output soar. It’s not uncommon to see a Patterson book and soon after a different “Patterson And” book where he’s teamed up with writes like Andrew Gross or Maxine Paetro.
Despite the furor over the comparative price of the ebook and the print book, if they remain the same, Cross Fire makes for an interesting field test of book pricing.  At virtually the same price–what can 12 cents get you?–it comes down to which a reader prefers because of varied issues:  the environment (save a tree), weight (just under a pound at 14.4 ounces), landed cost (add $3 for minimum cost of delivery in the US), sensual (a hardcover’s distinctive feel and smell), wrap-ability (an ebook isn’t amenable to shiny Christmas paper), share-ability (Amazon is changing that), and myriad other issues close to the hearts of readers.

Here’s a link to Amazon’s press release, and here’s our earlier post noting Stieg Larsson’s posthumous anointment as the first member of the Kindle Million Club:

July 27, 2010

Here’s an interesting tidbit….

Following on items discussed here at Kindle Nation Daily on June 3 and July 16, Amazon announced this morning that the late Stieg Larsson has become the first author to sell a million paid Kindle books. Larsson is The Beatles of eBooks, as the three books in his trilogy currently rank 1-2-3 among paid titles in the Kindle Store and arer all among the top 10 bestselling titles ever in the Kindle Store:

On July 16, I posted an article entitled Move Over, James Patterson … actually, Stieg Larsson Was the First Author to Sell a Million eBooks. I later backed off the exact figure because of information that I received from a reliable source in the publishing industry. Apparently Larsson’s sales were very close to a million total ebooks as of July 6, but have now passed a million Kindle ebooks ahead of any other author, which suggests two other general trends:

  • Larsson’s current ebook sales are phenomenal, and are probably continuing at something close to the 30 percent (of all copies) level I reported in my June 3 post.
  • The Kindle content market share for Larsson continues to be stunning.

It’s not a surprise that the latter is true, given that (1) the iBooks store does not stock Larsson or any other Random House author; and (2) for all of the attention paid to other dedicated ebook readers in the media, there is little sign that the Nook, or the various Sony products, or any other dedicated ebook readers have gained any real market traction beyond the lowest double digits.

The realities of Kindle content market share (among all ebooks) — 90 percent as of late 2009 according to publishing industry insiders, 76 per cent for James Patterson, 80 to 85 per cent for Larsson, and 100 percent among the tens of thousands of titles carried only in the Kindle Store — makes somewhat more vivid the recent controversies surrounding change in the publishing world.

The guts of Amazon’s press release follows:

Stieg Larsson Passes 1 Million Kindle Books Sold

Larsson is the first author to join the new “Kindle Million Club”

SEATTLE, Jul 27, 2010 (BUSINESS WIRE) — Amazon.com, Inc., (NASDAQ: AMZN) today announced that Stieg Larsson, author of the internationally bestselling Millennium Trilogy, has become the first author to sell over 1 million Kindle books and is the first member of the new “Kindle Million Club.” The “Kindle Million Club” recognizes authors whose entire body of work has sold over 1 million copies in the Kindle Store. Customers can buy the three books in Stieg Larsson’s Millennium Trilogy from the Kindle Store, and read them everywhere–on their Kindle, Kindle DX, iPhone, iPod touch, BlackBerry, PC, Mac, iPad and Android devices.

“Larsson’s books have captivated millions of readers around the world and ignited a voracious interest in the lives of its main characters Lisbeth Salander and Michael Blomqvist,” said Russ Grandinetti, Vice President of Kindle Content. “It’s been exciting to have been a part of introducing so many people to these great books.”

All three books in Stieg Larsson’s Millennium Trilogy–“The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo,” “The Girl Who Played with Fire” and “The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet’s Nest”–are now in the top 10 bestselling Kindle books of all time. These three books are New York Times and international bestsellers. Larsson, who lived in Sweden, was the editor in chief of the magazine Expo and a leading expert on antidemocratic right-wing extremist organizations. He died in 2004, shortly after delivering the manuscripts for “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo,” “The Girl Who Played with Fire” and “The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet’s Nest.” The U.S. editions of these books are published by the Knopf Doubleday imprint of Random House, Inc.

The books in Larsson’s Millennium Trilogy are available in the Kindle Store. Kindle offers the largest selection of the most popular books people want to read. The U.S. Kindle Store now has more than 630,000 books, including New Releases and 109 of 111 New York TimesBestsellers. Over 510,000 of these books are $9.99 or less, including 80 New York Times Bestsellers. Over 1.8 million free, out-of-copyright, pre-1923 books are also available to read on Kindle.

The “Kindle Million Club” recognizes paid Kindle book sales.

Two New Dean Koontz Releases: A Novel Idea to Promote A Novel, and a Self-Sabotaging Price

by Tom Dulaney
Contributing Reporter

Bestselling author Dean Koontz emailed fans this week, highlighting his “first ever ebook original novella,” Darkness Under the Sun. It’s $1.59 in the Kindle Store, and is currently sitting in the top 50 on the Kindle Store paid bestseller list.

The ebook introduces the evil villain who will appear in the December release of What The Night Knows,  now available for pre-order with a price tag of $15.12. The latter price may well be forced downward before the ebook delivers on Dec. 28, but it is bound to hurt Koontz’ sales if it remains unchanged.

Timed for Halloween, the “first-ever” Koontz novella is carrying water for the upcoming full book and is a treat for fans languishing for their next fix from the bestselling writer.  Writers call Koontz “a writer’s writer” and readers love him by the millions. So what if the novella’s timing is also a marketing “trick?”

(Ed. Note: The bigger trick, of course, is that $15.12 price. It is worth noting here that the publisher, Random House imprint Bantam, is not an agency model participant, so it is likely that it is Amazon itself that has set the price for this one. Any customer credibility that Amazon has won for itself with its “This price set by the publisher” tags may be squandered in a heartbeat if Kindle readers infer that the company has now decided to price Kindle new releases over 50 percent higher than the $9.99 standard. – S.W.)

Authors and publishers continue to tinker with and fine tune marketing strategies, and Darkness is a fine illustration of one method to pump up book sales. This novella introduces the evil character of Alton Turner Blackwood, “the killer at the dark heart of What The Night Knows.”

The promotional text beneath Darkness points out it is “the perfect read for Halloween” and reveals the “secret, fatal turning point in the career of” Blackwood. So, meet the killer for Halloween, then greet him again during Christmas break.

Other vital signs for Darkness, which presage success for What the Night Knows: The book rose to the top 25 on Amazon’s volatile Movers & Shakers list for a while.

All of those numbers indicate both the author’s strong following and the odds that the novella could lead to a successful December kick-off for What the Night Knows, if Amazon decides to price the ebook to sell.

The novella released exclusively as an ebook on October 25. It gives new readers a fine—and inexpensive—chance to discover Koontz. It gives his dedicated fans a treat to keep them going during the necessary dry spells between books. The author’s hopes, no doubt, are that new readers will enjoy Darkness so much they will visit the author’s extensive backlist of some 54 Kindle Store books while waiting for What the Night Knows to emerge at the end of the year.

Another part of the strategy:  If readers like the novella, they’ll pre-order the book.  When Dec. 28 rolls around, those pre-orders join first day sales to rocket the book as high as it can go on bestseller lists.  The higher on the list, the more visible to all book buying visitors, the more likely it capture more sales and rise higher still.

For Kindle Nation Daily readers who go into the Koontz archives, take a look at the book many faithful Koontz fans consider to be his best ever: Watchers.

On his web site, Koontz explained last year that he works on his novels one page at a time, not leaving a  page until it is as perfect as he can make it. He blames a huge dose of “self-doubt” for the process, but adds that he rarely has to revisit the page in the future. When it’s done, it’s done.

Koontz has an army of ardent followers, swollen to large numbers back in the Eighties with the success of Watchers. Published in 1987, it was one of the first bestsellers to pair up a genetically altered and thereby amazingly intelligent and supernaturally gifted dog with its likewise-escaped lab mate from the cages, an enraged and envious creature.

Kindle Nation Daily Free Book Alert, Friday, October 29: 5 Brand New Titles Top Our Free Book Listings, plus … a treasure trove of niche listings about military history, naval affairs, and politics from Nimble Books (Today’s Sponsor), and over 100 other fully updated free Kindle ebook listings

As with so many subgenres and topics of niche interest in this new age of digital publishing, we could probably file today’s sponsorship under “Not for Everyone, But Perfect for Some.”

Readers who are deeply interested in particular genres and subgenres of books sometimes find that the selection of Kindle titles in their niche is still more limited than they would like.  While modern bestsellers are available in most genres, there are still a lot of holes in the backlist and in the depth of coverage in subgenres. For example, in the science fiction genre, Larry Niven’s relatively recent bestseller Ringworld’s Children is available for Kindle, but the first three volumes of the series, including the must-have classic Ringworld, are not.  The same pattern can be found in many other genres.

Nimble Books is a publisher that is addressing this problem for readers who enjoy books about military history, naval affairs, and politics.  A recent Kindle Nation post about a Nimble book on international politics, Blood on our Hands: the American Invasion and Destruction of Iraq, helped connect that book with many readers.  This has inspired Nimble to try something different which is, frankly, an experiment: neither Nimble nor I have any idea whether this will work! But we think it’s worth the risk: if it helps a few Kindle Nation citizens find books that interest us, we will discover not just one, but an ample backlist of worthwhile new titles in our areas of special interest. And for those of us who aren’t interested, all we have to do is scroll down to today’s latest additions to our Kindle Nation Daily Free Book listings….

But first, a word from … Today’s Sponsor

Accordingly, this Kindle Nation Daily sponsorship shines the spotlight on over 30 Nimble Books titles on military, naval, and political topics ranging from battleshipstorpedo boats, and Napoleonic history to aviationcurrent affairs, and strategy.

Some of Nimble‘s bestsellers in these areas include

Kindle Nation Daily Free Book Alert, Thursday, October 28: Happy Endings and abortive beginnings among our Free Book Listings, plus … If you are passionate about the paranormal, you’re going to love Inhuman (Today’s Sponsor), and over 100 other fully updated free Kindle ebook listings

We reap what we sow. During the past couple of weeks we’ve offered our readers substantial free excerpts from two Joe Konrath books that have moved with lightning speed up the ranks of Kindle bestsellers, so who are we to complain about the fact that a couple of the most recent additions to our Kindle Nation Free Book Alert listings have been excerpted previews from forthcoming novels by James Patterson and Oliver Pötzsch? They’re there if you want them, but we’ll let them share the spotlight today with a free book about a company I love, a company whose share price has more than tripled in the past 9 months, a company whose stock, if we’d all bought it back then, might mean that we’d never have to go looking for free Kindle books again. Happy endings indeed….

But first, a word from … Today’s Sponsor

(Ed. Note: Have you ever wondered if the authors of contemporary paranormal thrillers were just literary hacks? English majors who could be writing about pretty much anything, but they chose the paranormal because it seemed like a profitable niche? Well, if that’s what you were thinking, perhaps it is time you met Danielle Q. Lee, today’s Kindle Nation Daily Free Book Alert sponsor. She’s passionate about the paranormal, and she brings a powerful imagination to the creation of an entirely new fictional heroine. –S.W.)
