Kindle Nation Daily Sci-Fi Readers Alert! Gary Caplan’s Award Winning Space Opera Novel Talcon Star City

Talcon Star City

by Gary Caplan

2 Rave Reviews
Text-to-Speech and Lending: Enabled
Here’s the set-up:

Talcon Star City has been honored as a “Finalist” of the 2012 International Book Awards in the “Fiction: Science Fiction” category.

Somewhere in the future, the universe is filled with hundreds of wild, weird and completely diverse civilizations existing on a myriad of strange and wonderful planets. But amidst all these brave new worlds, are otherworldly enemies intent on control, no matter what it costs them or the universe, and all courageous people must step forward and band together to stop them. That’s the premise of Gary Caplan’s brilliantly realized Talcon Star City, a story of bravery, revenge, aliens, and interstellar swashbuckling.

Caplan first burst onto the literary scene when he became a finalist in the highly prestigious 2010 Indie Excellence Award for his novel Phoenix Rising, which is also the prequel to Talcon Star City. Honing his craft, Caplan continued to write and went on to win the 2011 Indie Excellence Award in fantasy for his novel Return of the Ancient Ones. With Talcon Star City, he’s become even more exhilarating a writer, fashioning a science fiction epic that’s also thoughtful and realistic.

Talcon Star City centers on the character of Commodore Robert Sheppard, who, as acting admiral, commands the flagship Phoenix and the 6th fleet. As an esteemed member of the Order of Star Knights, Sheppard is gifted with unusually powerful metaphysical abilities, which he uses to help preserve the hundreds of civilizations in the universe. But there is now unrest in the universe and Sheppard and his other military officials must band together to fight a desperate alien challenge to the peaceful Alliance of Worlds. Lucky for Sheppard, he has his old mentor Garfield, and other allied Star Knights and admirals to help back him up in his fight. But as the plot thickens, the battle escalates. Now Sheppard is facing his old nemesis, the Varlon, who are sworn enemies of the Alliance of Worlds and are intent on expanding their power. But as Sheppard grapples with the evil he already knows, he must also face a group of aliens who are new to him, the fearsome Accads, who have joined with the Varlon and who pose challenging new threats he may be ill-equipped to vanquish. The best hope for the universe is to find the Talcon Star City and gain even more allies against these forces of evil. But time is running out. Can the stalwart heroes win the battle and stop this alien onslaught or is it already too late?

Caplan’s sparkling prose and larger-than-life characters make Talcon Star City an incomparable reading experience. “Sometimes unusual alliances are needed to combat deadly enemies,” says Caplan, an idea he boldly and entertainingly illustrates. His vision of the future is filled with startling new powers and technologies, all rendered with dazzling skill and humor, from comet-like projective weapons to particle cannonballs and invisible cloaks. Drawing from his own experiences in the military, Caplan gives his futuristic tale a stunning feeling of authenticity, making the interactions between military forces and aliens as plausible and true-to-life as they are exciting and original. Meant to appeal to fans of both Battlestar Galactica and Star Trek, Talcon Star City seems destined for classic status.

5-Star Amazon Review
“Talcon Star City is the second book in the Alliance of Worlds sci-fi series. This interesting indie book is a story of bravery, revenge, aliens, and interstellar swashbuckling. The author has done an amazing job with character and storyline development. The first book, The Phoenix Rising is also a great read. Talcon Star City has been honored as a “Finalist” of the 2012 International Book Awards in the “Fiction: Science Fiction” category. The Phoenix Rising was also a finalist in the 2010 Indie Excellence Awards. Talcon Star City is a highly recommended Science Fiction, Fantasy, Spacer Opera Novel!!”

The story is fast-paced, engaging, enjoyably atmospheric, dark, and I'm really fascinated with Anna's character.
The Devil's Grin (Kronberg Crimes)
by Annelie Wendeberg
4.5 stars - 81 reviews
Text-to-Speech and Lending: Enabled
Here's the set-up:
In Victorian London's cesspool of crime and disease, a series of murders remains undiscovered until a cholera victim is found floating in the city's drinking water supply. Dr Anton Kronberg, England's best bacteriologist, is called upon to investigate and finds evidence of abduction and medical maltreatment. While Scotland Yard has little interest in pursuing the case, Kronberg pushes on and crosses paths with Sherlock Holmes. The detective immediately discovers Kronberg's secret - a woman masquerading as a man in order to practice medicine - a criminal deed that could land her in prison for years to come. But both must join forces to stop a crime so monstrous, it outshines Jack the Ripper's deeds in brutality and cold-bloodedness.
One Reviewer Notes:
Suspenseful, authentic yet innovative and faithful to the original Sherlock Holmes character--can't wish for a better combination. This is a skillful writer and a thinking one, no easy outs and no lazy solutions.

On a beautiful spring afternoon in San Francisco a deadly toxin is released. Within hours it spreads like wildfire, consuming the entire Bay Area. A small group of survivors, desperate to stay alive, must travel through a gauntlet of raging corpses, battling their inner demons and each other along the way.

Through a priest, they gain access to a partial antidote. Holing up in a hospital in an attempt to create a safe zone, everything they believe in will be questioned. The antidote, they soon discover, is almost as dangerous as the infection.

Things unravel within their walls as a teenage gang deliberately infects themselves after receiving the partial cure. They revel in the power it gives them. Believing in their invincibility, they declare war on all who get in their way.

Faith will be lost. Lives will be surrendered. Heroes will rise.

This is the first book of a series. The second book, Value of Jade, was released on Sept. 20, 2012.

Biography

Captivated by the eerie and a lover of things that go bump-in-the-night, Dan thoroughly enjoys embracing the fear that resides within. A scary story or movie is always at the top of his list.Mace of the Apocalypse is his first complete novel which delves into the darkness within all of us. It is meant to shock and repulse at times, but also question who we really are or could become in an atmosphere of pure insanity. There is also a spiritual side to the story, because inside each of us is a struggle to come to terms with the true meaning of our existence.

WIPEOUT  —    WALL$STREET  meets  BACK$STREET

A team of burglars, known as the 4 Minute Burglars, ingratiate themselves with a more sophisticated kind of thief.  Then smart headstrong women take center stage.

From Kirkus Review:

“This invitingly gritty noir lines up the elements of a dark thrill ride: drug dealing, prison releases, infidelities, burglaries, double crosses and cool women selling hot sex…Burglaries are planned and executed, but with the shifting alliances and lack of honor among thieves, the criminals find it hard to hold on to their ill-gotten gains. The plot rockets through twists and turns at a thrilling pace, with a dizzying number of subplots…Lomax juggles these storylines with admirable skill.”

Reviews

“A fantastic read…well written and descriptive… Melissa McPhail is an extremely talented writer.”   —Reviewed by Charline Ratcliff for RebeccasReads

“This is a richly imagined piece of work…the characters are engaging, and McPhail manages to do some very original things, which is often difficult in fantasy, given that so much work in the genre relies on Tolkienian stereotypes….some strong work here.”  —Writer’s Digest Self-Published Book Awards
“A well thought-out story with many layers…the characters are all interconnected…and the underlying mysteries that tie everything together are well hidden and thoroughly disguised.” —Reviewed by Marty Shaw for Reader Views
