Forget everything you thought you knew about unicorns and maidens…

by Jim Bernheimer

$2.84 in the Kindle Store

I couldn’t put this book down. The book pulled me in from page one and did not let go, even at the end which had me searching for the sequel. –Red Adept Reviews

Bernheimer’s first Spirals of Destiny novel is an intriguing story from the onset and only picks up steam or, in the case of Kayleigh Reese, kindles to flame! –Terry W. Ervin II, Author of Flank Hawk

A tightly-written, well-thought-out, solidly entertaining first installment in what promises to be an “unputdownable” series. In fact, Mr. Bernheimer could be in serious danger of breaking through into the big time… The work of a born talent! –The Book Trolley

This is not your parents’ unicorn story. As soon as I turned the last page, I was eager for the next book! –David Debord, Author of The Absent Gods

A unicorn is not supposed to survive the death of its rider, but Majherri did. Now he is a pariah, mistrusted by the Greater Herd. To reclaim his lost honor and status, he will entrust the remnants of his life to a new human female while unraveling the mystery of his continued existence. Kayleigh Reese is not Battle Maiden material. She’s three years older than any other recruit and has enjoyed a peaceful, nomadic life working with her artist mother. The rigors of joining the High-King’s elite unicorn cavalry are clearly not for her. Now, with a bond to Majherri, she must overcome her mother’s disapproval, the ire of her commanding officer and fellow trainees, and, most importantly, the secrets of her unicorn’s past if she is to become a legendary warrior. To prevail, they must quickly come together as a team and unlock the powerful and dangerous magic inside them.

  Cybill Disobedience, by Cybill Shepherd
and Aimee Lee Ball

“A riveting, candid, fresh and self-revealing book.” — — Liz Smith

“Gutsy.” — San Francisco Examiner

“Nobody kisses and tells like Cybill Shepherd.” — New York Daily News

‘How I survived beauty pageants, Elvis, sex, Bruce Willis, lies, marriage, motherhood, Hollywood, and the irrepressible urge to say what you think.’

From wholesome beauty queen to saucy cover girl, from heartbreaking movie star (THE LAST PICTURE SHOW, TAXI DRIVER) to one of television’s most loved comediennes (MOONLIGHTING, CYBILL), Cybill Shepherd is renowned as sassy, shocking and sexy. In CYBILL DISOBEDIENCE, she opens her heart with the wit and honesty of a star who’s seen and knows it all.

The Pearl at the Gate
For her transgression, she will pay–with screams of forbidden pleasure. After a lifetime of hard work, Captain Roake Barbenoir finally has all he has ever wanted. Wealth, social position, and the epitome of an ideal wife, the beautiful and well-born Jenesta. Of all his treasures, she is his favorite-a pearl, perfect and pure–and Roake vows never to tarnish her with the dark sexual knowledge he gleaned from a life at sea.
Yet every breath his sweet wife takes arouses an urge to watch her come apart under the onslaught of his passion. But she must never know of the lust-filled, almost demonic cravings fighting for release in his soul. To make her privy to them would be to lose her warm regard.
Each time Jenesta feels she and her enigmatic husband are growing closer, Roake withdraws behind a cold, unreadable mask. Perhaps if she knew him better, knew more of his past, she could learn how to win his heart. The answers surely lie behind the locked door of Roake’s east-wing retreat. The one he has forbidden her to enter.
Jenesta’s defiance of his one simple rule cannot go unpunished. For her transgression, she will pay-with screams of pleasure; sweet, exquisite pain; and perhaps with the loss of what she wants most. Roake, and his love.
Warning: No demure Regency here! Graphic and explicit everything, including language and sex of all varieties (as could be expected from an Alpha male more accustomed to bordellos than ballrooms) and, be warned, your grandmother’s pearls will never look the same to you again.

Human beings have astonishing genetic vulnerabilities. More than half of us will die from complex diseases that trace directly to those vulnerabilities, and the modern world we’ve created places us at unprecedented risk from them. In It Takes a Genome, Greg Gibson posits a revolutionary new hypothesis: Our genome is out of equilibrium, both with itself and its environment. Simply put, our genes aren’t coping well with modern culture. Our bodies were never designed to subsist on fat and sugary foods; our immune systems weren’t designed for today’s clean, bland environments; our minds weren’t designed to process hard-edged, artificial electronic inputs from dawn ‘til midnight. And that’s why so many of us suffer from chronic diseases that barely touched our ancestors.
Gibson begins by revealing the stunningly complex ways in which multiple genes cooperate and interact to shape our bodies and influence our behaviors. Then, drawing on the very latest science, he explains the genetic “mismatches” that increasingly lead to cancer, diabetes, inflammatory and infectious diseases, AIDS, depression, and senility.
Billy Boyle: A World War II Mystery

Billy Boyle is a Boston cop, from a family of Boston cops, but he is a reluctant soldier who prefers walking the beat in Southie to fighting Nazis. Using her cousin by marriage, a certain General Eisenhower, Billy’s mother lands her son a seemingly soft job with Ike’s staff in London. But Ike wants Billy to use his investigative know-how to sniff out a possible spy in the Allies’ inner circle. Young Billy, oversold by his mother as a crackerjack detective, is definitely in over his head, especially when it turns out that the apparent suicide of a Norwegian dignitary may have been the work of the spy. Benn has a tantalizing premise here, but he doesn’t quite deliver on it: his prose slips into wartime cliches a little too often, and the supporting love story reeks of WWII melodrama. Yet the action builds to a suspenseful climax, and there is even a hint of moral ambiguity in the wrap-up. A not entirely satisfactory debut, then, but Ken Follett fans will want to give Billy and his uncle a chance to develop. Bill Ott, Booklist

Guest Post: Why I'm Giving Away Two Kindles, By Scott Nicholson

(Editor’s Note: Please join me in welcoming novelist Scott Nicholson as a guest contributor to Kindle Nation today. –S.W.)

I’ve been a reader since Dr. Seuss warped my brain at an early age (I still count the good doctor as the most brilliant literary mind in history), and I grew up with hundreds of paper books–from the adventure tales of Robert Louis Stevenson and H.G. Wells to the seriously fun Richard Brautigan, Elmore Leonard, and Shirley Jackson.

I can remember the thrill when my first-ever published novel, The Red Church, showed up in the mail. I ripped open the carton and took a big, dangerous sniff of that pulp and ink and glue.

Now that book is on a closet shelf, along with the rest of my books, packed up like old memories. I still read paper books, but there is no denying the incredible advantages of the digital literary era. As an author, I have the power for the first time in history to directly connect with you, my reader, at a fair price and with nobody standing in our way.

And the tales I have heard from readers both in e-mails and on message boards are inspiring–teachers who take Kindles into classrooms, those with vision problems who can now adjust their font size, and the many people who are expanding their literary horizons by trying new genres and subjects.

It’s nothing short of an awe-inspiring revolution, and I am fortunate to be starting Act II of my writing career by launching both new titles and revised editions of my old mass-market paranormal thrillers. To celebrate my renewal, I am embarking on a 90-day blog tour this autumn, giving away a Kindle DX as a grand prize, as well as a Kindle 3 and a massive collection of ebooks.

Why the blog tour?

I used to do dozens of store signings for each paperback release, driving hours away from home to meet readers.

Now my readers are closer than ever–the click of a button and a few keystrokes. My readers can email me in the middle of a book. We are connected, and we are sharing the story experience in ways more intimate than ever. It’s much easier to share all my novels–THE RED CHURCH, THE SKULL RING, SPEED DATING WITH THE DEAD, and DRUMMER BOY–at the same time, because thanks to digital media, they can now be available all at once, something very rare in the world of bookstores.

Why the Kindle? It’s clearly the winner in the e-reading sweepstakes, with Amazon doing almost everything right. The device is user-friendly and Amazon recognized the hunger for a diverse range of literature, thus making it easy for virtually anyone to share their books with an audience. Amazon is taking that idea worldwide. Best of all, Amazon recognizes that digital content doesn’t have the inherent costs of paper-book distribution and those savings should be passed along to readers.

The Kindle Giveaway Blog Tour celebrates the new era and you as a reader, and raises the respectability of independent authors whose voices now have an outlet. It’s also a “Thank you” to the book bloggers and those who spread the news about books and stories.

A thanks to Amazon for its support, and to Stephen Windwalker at Kindle Nation Daily for sponsoring the tour, and Dellaster Design, who exhibits the type of professional ebook formatting that readers deserve.

More information on how you can win a Kindle DX, even if you already have one, is at http://www.hauntedcomputer.com/blogtour.htm.

You can win a Kindle 3 by subscribing to the blog tour newsletter at scottsinnercircle-subscribe@yahoogroups.com, and you can win a Pandora’s Box of ebooks by following “hauntedcomputer” on Twitter.

My personal motto for the new era is one I would like to share with all of you: “We’re all in it together.”
