“With Charlotte Collins Becton mines the rich vein of literary characters who’ve vanished into the mists of history…. Charming, witty, and grounded in period detail, Becton’s debut novel will make Jane Austen fans rejoice.” –Beverle Graves Myers

Since Jane Austen gave us only six novels, lovers of the classic author have written many sequels, prequels and take-offs. Jennifer Becton’s creative development of an Austen minor character is considered one of the very best.

Charlotte Collins by Jennifer Becton is a deeply satisfying and captivating read.”

Brilliant
Captures the same feel of Austen!
The first worthwhile sequel I’ve read
Austen’s minor character shines in this debut novel

Here’s the set-up:

When Charlotte Lucas married Mr. Collins in Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice, she believed herself to be fortunate indeed. Her nuptials gained her a comfortable home and financial security. If she acquired these things at the expense of true love, it did not matter one whit. To Charlotte, love in marriage was nothing more than a pleasant coincidence.

As the years of her marriage dragged by, Charlotte began to question her idea of love as she suffered continual embarrassment at her husband’s simpering and fawning manners. When Mr. Collins dies, finally relieving everyone of his tedious conversation, she must work feverishly to secure her income and home. She gives no further thought to the possibility of love until her flighty sister Maria begs her to act as her chaperone in place of their ailing parents. Hoping to prevent Maria from also entering an unhappy union, Charlotte agrees, and they are quickly thrust into a world of country dances, dinner parties, and marriageable gentlemen.

But when an unprincipled gentleman compromises Charlotte’s reputation, her romantic thoughts disappear at the prospect of losing her independence. As she struggles to extricate herself from her slander, her situation reveals both the nature of each gentleman and of true love.

What the Reviewers Say
I always have thought that Charlotte deserved more than she got in life, and this book gives it to her. The odious Mr. Collins dies and finally Charlotte gets to live the life she wants, or so she thinks, until her sister and the gossips of the area get involved. I am so happy she gets her happy ending. Although the characters are from P&P, the plot is more from Sense and Sensibility. I would recommend this to anyone.
–Austen Lover

In Jennifer Becton’s beautiful Pride and Prejudice sequel, Charlotte Collins receives the opportunity for a second chance in love. After seven exasperating and tedious years of marriage, Mr. Collins passes away in an unfortunate carriage accident. Charlotte, now in her mid-thirties, enjoys a life of independence and solitude as she lives off the jointure Mr. Collins begrudgingly set up for her. Charlotte’s peace and quiet is soon interrupted when her younger sister Maria becomes a permanent house guest and coerces Charlotte into being her chaperone. Charlotte finds herself revisiting the world of balls, beaus, and romance as she assists Maria in finding a felicitous match. It soon becomes apparent though, that Maria is not the only one who has romance on the mind…
I absolutely love it when an author takes a secondary Austen character, brings them to the forefront, and transforms them into an admirable hero or heroine. What a delight it was to read a novel that centered on these two diverse sisters who were previously only minor characters! One aspect of this novel I took great pleasure in was discovering the parallels between Charlotte and Maria and the Dashwood sisters. With a head full of romantic notions and her blatant disregard for society’s standards, Maria Lucas reminded me very much of Marianne, and Charlotte’s sensible levelheadedness and realistic disposition made me think of Elinor. There are other subtle nods to Jane Austen’s novels to be found in this tale, such as Charlotte being blinded by her prejudices and Maria displaying, very publicly, her feelings for a certain gentleman. My only tiny quibble about this novel is that Maria, whom I guess to be in twenties now, was a little too flighty and heedless for her age. I felt she was sometimes a little too much like Lydia Bennet.

Charlotte Collins by Jennifer Becton is a deeply satisfying and captivating read. If you have desired a better fate for Charlotte Collins or are intrigued by the idea of her becoming a heroine, then this is the novel for you! I am completely enamored with the romantic and tender love story in this novel, and I dearly hope that this is only the beginning of Ms. Becton’s Austenesque writing career!

–Austenesque Reviews

I have read a lot of P and P fanfiction, but have never read one so sympathetic to Charlotte. It was fun to get to know her and refreshing to see things from the point of view of someone who is really more conventional for the time than either Lizzy or Darcy. I really enjoyed seeing things from Charlotte’s point of view. The story is plausible, interesting and well written. The character of Charlotte is very well drawn. I enjoyed this selection very much.

Fantastic gripping read
Gripping and very intense
Disturbing in its relevance

Mark Taylor discovers first hand that no good deed goes unpunished when the old camera he found during a freelance job in an Afghanistan bazaar gives him more than great photos. It triggers dreams of disasters. Tragedies that happen exactly as he envisions them. He learns that not only can he see the future, he can change it. Then the unthinkable happened and everyone ignored his frantic warnings. Thousands die. Suddenly, the Feds are pounding on his door and the name they have for Taylor isn’t urban hero. What the Reviewers Say
Great book! …This book grabs you from page one and never lets you go. The blending of current events, suspense, thriller and just that dab of the supernatural made for an awesome read. One of the things I love best about my Kindle is the ease in finding new indy authors like Ms. McDonald. I will definitely be looking forward to the next book. This is an author to watch in the future. Just think, when she is a “big time” writer we can all say we read her when…

I bought this as I wanted to support a fellow blogger and have just now got round to reading it. I literally couldn’t put it down. A fast paced emotive read that sent me spiraling through various emotions as Mark got dragged through the wringer. One hell of a good read. Totally recommend it.

This book is not my usual genre so I thought it would just be mildly entertaining and then I would pass it off to my hubby. Wow, was I ever wrong! Mary McDonald has written a book that should be given an award. Don’t start this book at work or you will find it necessary to close your door and claim to be on a conference call all afternoon, just so you can finish the book.

Mary McDonald managed to make me feel every bit of the punishment that the main character took. I was exhausted trying to help him because he is such a well developed character that you care what happens to him. I highly recommend this book.

“Grief defeated by laughter”
“Not just for widows !!!!!!”

Here’s the set-up:

Welcome To My World. Doing All Those Things I Thought I’d Never Do Again.

The Unfaithful Widow is a collection of essays and fragmented thoughts on finding joy again after the loss of a mate. A memoir of the first year alone written with warmth and laughter, no subject is taboo. From dealing with the funeral home (Can I show your our upgraded cremation package? I looked at Miss Death, was I booking a vacation?) to dating again (He ran in the door, looked at me and said “I’ve left something in my car.” He never returned). Sprinkle in a bevy of rescue dogs (Finally a good nights sleep with someone new in my bed.) and those questions you hate to ask (Condoms anyone?). A story for anyone who has suffered loss and is determined to become their own super hero.

What the Reviewers Say
This is a charming story of how one woman fought her way back from the grief of losing her husband to a new future filled with faith and happiness. As you go along on her year’s journey, you will cry a little, laugh a lot as she experiences trying to date on line, and the joy that came from adopting neglected dogs to fill her life with love.
This is not just a book for widows. This is a book for anyone who has a void to fill in her life. Be prepared for surprises with every chapter that will delight you.

–Audrey Frank

In her review, Audrey Frank said, “This is a book for anyone who has a void to fill in her life.” That’s much too limiting. No void is necessary, and the book is not just for females. It’s a book for anyone seeking entertainment and anyone who might benefit from inspiration to keep going. It’s also for everyone who likes dogs and soft-core dirty talk.

Barbara Barth is a master (mistress?) storyteller, with an uncanny ability to recall or recreate dialog. She is able to pluck humor from sadness. She shows proper respect for the past without being a prisoner of the past. Barbara demonstrates impressive resilience, strength and the ability to keep looking ahead despite widowhood, bad dates, and the death of a dog. Her unwillingness to accept cliche roles dictated by age, custom or gender are important lessons for everyone.

I don’t want to concentrate only on the inspirational aspects of the book, because it is a LOT OF FUN. I read the Kindle version on a bumpy train ride. I was tired and woozy. A lesser book would have made me turn off my iPad. With Barbara’s book, I kept tapping to turn the electronic pages to see what happens next. The woman sitting next to me wondered what was making me laugh and she started reading along with me. I read faster than she did, and let her catch up before I turned the pages.

Although I didn’t “get” the cover illustration (it’s apparently a chick thing) and at times I thought I was overhearing a conversation that was meant just for women (number of bras owned, evaluating a man’s butt), at other times I thought Barbara was talking directly to me. Buy the book and hear what Barbara has to say to you. You won’t be disappointed.
–Michael N. Marcus, author of Stories I’d Tell My Children (but maybe not until they’re adults) and other books

Losing a loved one is always difficult and sometimes you need the support of others who have been through the same situation. I have not lost a husband but I have lost loved ones. The essays in this book will help you feel both the loss and provide a bit of a “pick-me-up”. Rescuing animals became Barbara’s coping tool that allowed her to learn to live again. This book is funny, wise and very insightful.

I think that anyone who has lost a loved one, even if you aren’t a widow, you will find parts in these essays that ring true to you. I love Barbara’s voice and I like that she didn’t hold back.
–Bridget Hopper

A must read
Touching romance and adventure story
A haunting love story as rare as a ghost orchid

Here’s the set-up…

A mysterious orchid is central to a story of love, lies, and redemption. Once more before I die-the haunting mantra of a lonely woman. A woman grieving more than one loss. On her regular walks amongst the splendor of the Audubon Society sanctuary, situated at the edge of the Florida Everglades, the sights and sounds of nature filled the void in Mel’s soul. She found peace here. No tears for what might have been. Only joy for having experienced the ecstasy of a great love. Her secrets stayed buried.

In another part of the world an exquisitely beautiful young woman also found peace by immersing herself in nature, capturing its beauty on film for National Geographic. Educated in Europe’s finest boarding schools, Neev became a model at fourteen, but after four years of posing and false smiles she knew she wanted more out of life. She quit modeling to study Philosophy at Oxford University.

Neev’s love of photography brought her to the other side of the camera lens, and to exotic locations around the globe. Working on assignment with famous photographer Roger Andrew, she often trekked deep into the jungle in search of rare flowers. Having a young, beautiful woman as a partner seemed like a good omen, and Roger thought their travels together could lead to a unique discovery. In spite of the age difference, their shared passion soon blossomed into a loving relationship. He wondered why someone so young would crave this nomadic, isolated lifestyle. Although Neev did share bits of information about her family, she always kept parts of her past a secret.

When a Ghost Orchid began to bloom at the Audubon Society sanctuary, Roger knew this was the opportunity he’d been waiting for. Neev was reluctant to visit Florida, for personal reasons, but he convinced her to accompany him on the trip. After a series of odd coincidences, they soon discovered this sensuous flower wasn’t just rare and beautiful, it also had a strange, mystical power.

What the Reviewers Say
Mel, consumed by her love for a man who shares her passion but cannot commit to her, finds consolation in her daily walks at an Audubon Society sanctuary near the Florida Everglades. Her daughter, Neev, raised by foster parents, does not understand nor can she forgive her mother for abandoning her and deliberately keeps her at arm’s length. A former model and graduate of Oxford University, Neev interns under Roger Andrew, an acclaimed photographer with National Geographic. As the two travel to exotic locales, they enter into a romantic relationship which deepens into an affectionate friendship. Roger’s passion is shooting scarce and endangered flora, and when he learns that a Ghost Orchid, a rare form of the orchid family, is blooming at an Audubon Society sanctuary in Florida, he cannot miss this opportunity. Knowing Neev dislikes the area where her mother lived, he nevertheless asks her to accompany him there. Neev agrees, setting in motion mystical occurrences surrounding the Ghost Orchid connecting Neev’s past to her present and future.

Ghost Orchid is a lovely story brilliantly depicted through the author’s poetic prose and vibrant descriptives. Characters are well-developed and intriguing, as are the locales portrayed. Readers will fall under the spell of Christi as she weaves a magical tale of love, betrayal and forgiveness.
Christy Tillery French, Midwest Book Review

Author D.K. Christi says “Ghost Orchid is the story of the human heart and the relationships that give life meaning, including those with the natural environment.” It is based around her real-life sighting of this rare plant in 2007.

So moved was she by the experience she began writing a story – this story. And it shows in the empathy she portrays with her characters, and the way she weaves her story around the true setting of Audubon Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary.
Her story has it all, betrayal, loss, love, forgiveness. It is the way she puts them all together that creates the amazing impact upon her readers.

This story has more twists and turns than many mountain switch-back roads. Just when you think you have it all figured out, Ms. Christi leads you off down another avenue. Her descriptions of the sanctuary had me zooming off to search it out online. I found a video of the Ghost Orchid and can understand why Ms. Christi was so influenced by it. That is what reading this book does to you. You want to `be’ there, so you can walk beside her characters. Each and every one of them has an integral and influential part to play in her story.

Her story is unusual in as much it spans many years, both backwards and forwards as the orchid weaves its spell upon each character across the generations. Not everyone can write a story spanning three generations successfully, but Ms. Christi does it superbly.

This is a story where to review the characters in detail will detract from the brilliance of the whole. Still, each one carries its own vibrancy onto the page, and Ms. Christi’s style has its own magic which breaths life into every word she writes as does the beauty of her setting.
–J. Thomas, Top 500 Reviewer

I was always told that you can’t judge a book by its cover, but with Ghost Orchid you can! The story inside is just as beautiful as the cover. Both are as rare as the ghost orchid on the cover. Author D.K. Christi has woven her knowledge of the Florida Everglades and nature into an exquisite, enchanting love story where a rare ghost orchid plays a magical, pivotal role for all the characters.
–Betty L. Dravis, Top 1,000 Reviewer

Author D.K. Christi is a true romantic. Her ability to describe the beauty in nature is only surpassed by the inner beauty she portrays in finding true love. She writes as though she has experienced this beauty. Her characters draw the reader into a web of emotion, anguish and intrigue.

The illegitimate birth of a girl left with foster parents in Germany, takes the reader on a journey to the jungles of Brazil and the Everglades in Florida photographing the beauty of nature. A mystery controls the life of the heroine seeking answers and yearning for an elusive love. Finding a rare flower, a Ghost Orchid, becomes a magnet that brings together lost loves, unfolds hidden secrets and serves to unite and heal. To learn more, read the book synopsis. Better still, read the book. You may discover your own hidden desires.

–Abe F. March, author To Beruit and Back

“A recommended read for anyone who enjoys speculative fiction, or is a fan of Vincent Van Gogh’s life and work.”
–GraceKrispy @ MotherLode blog

Here’s the set-up…

Imagine Vincent van Gogh in our modern world.

Suppose, during the last year and a half of his life, when he severs part of his ear and commits himself to the insane asylum, he stumbles into the very circumstance he has longed for his entire adult life — a family. Would his life change for the better, or would his self-destructive tendencies again prevail?

Van Gogh, Encore is a speculative novel based upon the last year and a half of Vincent van Gogh’s life.

Set in the United States, the tale presents an alternative dimension to the complex and fascinating artist who died impoverished and unappreciated … while the images he created went on to have global impact, and can be found on everything from vodka bottles to vehicle dashboard covers, television commercials to t-shirts, and whose original works now sell for millions.

What Reviewers Are Saying

“What if… what if Vincent Van Gogh were alive today, in modern times? What if his life took a different turn, if he met someone he could love? What might be in store for him? Van Gogh is famous for his powerful works of art, and infamous for his mental health issues and resulting bizarre behavior. How would that play out in the context of today?

“In this work of speculative fiction, John A. Karr portrays the last 18 months of Van Gogh’s life in the United States, and presents possibilities of a different future for the troubled, but gifted, artist. Given a different setting and nationality (Van Gogh is Canadian in this book), and a blossoming love with a vivacious woman, Van Gogh gets another chance at life. The book stays true to many facts of Van Gogh’s later life- his brother Theo’s support, his relationship with Gauguin (including the knife threat and Van Gogh’s plan to start an artists’ colony), cutting his ear off and offering it to a prostitute, and his battle with mental illness and epilepsy. The author seamlessly and realistically weaves these facts into the new context, creating an engaging read.

“At nearly twice the size of the average ebook, this was a page-turner. Descriptive and eloquent, this book really allows you to feel what it might be like to be Van Gogh, to live inside his tormented mind as he attempts to make sense of contradictory stimuli. The author uses carefully selected words and phrasing to portray Van Gogh’s thoughts in a way that really highlights his inner turmoil, as well as his artistic passion. The characters were nicely drawn, but the star of this story is really Vincent, whose character is well-established. With regards to other characters, I did find a little hard to believe the love Lynn obviously felt for Vincent. I could understand his attraction to her, but didn’t really get why she was so attracted to him. His paintings were genius, but she obviously loved him for much more than that, and his obvious vulnerability didn’t seem to me quite enough to explain that love.

“This book could use one more editing pass to fix the last mistakes (not enough to be really frustrating, but enough to make note), but overall was engaging and satisfying. A recommended read for anyone who enjoys speculative fiction, or is a fan of Vincent Van Gogh’s life and work.”

Here’s the set-up…
The story of Queen Isabella, who sought revenge on her husband Edward II, and her lover Sir Roger Mortimer, who masterminded the invasion that accomplished it.

The marriage of Isabella of France and Edward II of England in 1308 is a union meant to secure lasting peace. For years, Isabella is a loyal wife, who repeatedly salvages her husband’s kingship, even as she endures his neglect. When she finally speaks out against Edward’s favorite, Lord Hugh Despenser, her income, lands and children are taken from her. In an age when women are not supposed to openly defy their husbands, Isabella vows to get her children back and have her revenge on Despenser — no matter what the cost.

Imprisoned in the Tower of London for leading a rebellion against King Edward, Mortimer escapes with Isabella’s help and finds refuge in the French court. But when Isabella arrives in Paris to negotiate a peace treaty, it is a temptation the ambitious Mortimer cannot resist.

What the Reviewers Say
I’m very familiar with the story of Edward II, Queen Isabella and Roger Mortimer. Because of that, it takes a lot to keep me interested, and this novel definitely kept me interested. Ms. Sasson did her research and it shows.

My only disappointment was that the story was not taken to it’s tragic ending. I can understand why the author chose to end it where she did. It leaves the possibility open of a happy ending, even though I and most likely many others know what happened a few short years later.

If you’re a fan of historical fiction like I am, this book is well worth reading.

The fascinating life of Queen Isabella of France and her marriage to England’s King Edward II is spectacularly portrayed in N. Gemini Sasson’s newest novel, Isabeau. This riveting story sweeps the reader into the turbulence of 14th century England, Scotland, and France with passion and detailed historical fact.

From the earliest days of her marriage to Edward, Isabeau learns she must compete for her husband’s attentions. Piers Gaveston is her husband’s favourite, his lover; a peacock of a man whom Edward showers with gifts of vast wealth. Edward’s incompetence on the throne of England is evident to everyone. His apparent attentions to Piers angers politicians and leaders. As the misguided Edwards errs in his political judgements, Isabeau attempts to guide her husband. Not only beautiful, but highly intelligent with sharp diplomatic skills, Isabeau attempts to influence Edward’s decisions to keep tensions both within and outside of England to a minimum, but it proves to be a daunting task.

Edward, however, is not so easily influenced and as time passes, matters worsen for him. His unpopularity reaches new heights. The attentions he lavishes upon Piers Gaveston ires his countrymen and soon Piers is executed. Isabeau is hopeful that perhaps now, her husband will turn his attentions back to her. It was not to be. Before long, she learns her husband has taken a new lover – Hugh Despenser, a dangerous, ambitious man who will stop at nothing to wield his influence and destroy Isabeau whom he sees as his enemy.

Isabeau’s plight increases as Hugh Despenser manipulates Edward’s every action. Isabeau finds herself separated by her children and sent to France to negotiate on her husband’s behalf. It is in France that she reunites with Sir Roger Mortimer, a man she saved from the Tower several years earlier. Unable to deny their love for each other, the two enter into a dangerous liaison that will take them back to the shores of England where Isabelle leads an army to recapture the country on behalf of her son, Edward III.

From start to finish, the novel, Isabeau, kept me turning its pages. Lulled by the beautiful prose and stunning descriptions, N. Gemini Sasson breathed life into the woman known as the She-Wolf and portrayed her with sensitivity and great humanity. As I made my way through the story, I was impressed by Sasson’s descriptions of people and places. Every detail of every scene was written with clarity, activating all the reader’s senses. The novel spans nearly twenty years of her life and includes numerous characters of the era. The fact that the author has spent years researching English and Scottish history during this time is evident. For anyone who loves European history or biographical novels about influential women of days of yore, you must read this novel. It will bring you hours of reading pleasure. I guarantee it.
