Here’s the set-up:
What would you do if your Mormon stepfather pinned you down and tried to cast Satan out of you? For thirteen-year-old Ingrid, the answer is simple: RUN.For years Ingrid has begged her free-wheeling dad to let her join him on the road as a tool-selling vagabond to escape the suffocating poverty and religion at home. When her devout Mormon mother marries Earl―a homeless Vietnam vet who exploits the religion’s male-dominated culture to oppress and abuse her family―she finally gets her wish. Ingrid spends the next few summers living on the margins while hustling tools with her dad and his slimy, revolving sales crew. He becomes her lifeline and escape from Earl. But when her dad is arrested, she learns the lesson that will change her life: she can’t look to others to save her; she has to save herself.

Here’s the set-up:
Seven blackbirds in a tree, count them and see what they be….HOW DO YOU RECLAIM YOUR LIFE after an abusive marriage? By turns humorous, scandalous, and lyrical, Seven Blackbirds follows Kimberly Baltakis as she stumbles along the road toward wholeness, briefcase in one hand, diaper bag in the other.Helen Black is a graduate of Mount Holyoke College, University of Chicago, and the University of Tulsa College of Law. She lives in Portland, Oregon with her husband and five children.”At one a.m. in Tulsa the silence is unexpectedly deep. Am I in the city or the country? Is Tulsa urban or suburban, home or alien territory? I’m afraid to go to sleep, so I sit up in bed and ponder the disintegration of my marriage. In his crib, baby Nathan turns in langourous, pink-cheeked slumber and pokes a tiny hand through the bars. In a big city ight now, there’d be sirens, airplanes, car alarms; here, nothing. In the middle of the night, in the middle of the country, I am marooned in absolute, dustless, heat-soaked silence. The bottom drops out of the present. The past rushes up from behind and blocks my future, and I’m stranded–stranded in Tulsa, the city of my discontent.”Check out the book’s website at http://www.sevenblackbirds.com for video and audioclips, or pay a visit to Helen on Scribd, where she is currently top-subscribed female author. http://www.scribd.com/helenwinslow

Here’s the set-up:
To Chicago Trib reporter Miles Fischer, it was just another rape and murder trial, until the two convicted felons are found dead from a crossbow, in the muddy parking lot of a rundown bar just days after their surprising acquittal. His curiosity turns to suspicion after searching the archives where he discovers two more cases similar to the one in Tweeksbury. Is it a coincidence? Miles doesn’t think so. In fact, he believes he knows who the killer is after a chance encounter. Miles draws the ire of the FBI and becomes tight-lipped when confronted to disclose what he knows. He wants the story and the glory that goes with it, and believes he is the only one who can identify the killer. He sets his sights on Seattle and creates a game of cat-and-mouse with the FBI and an ex-cop turned private investigator. What Miles and the private investigator don’t realize is just how deadly this game is about to become.
