33 Million People in the Room: How to Create, Influence, and Run a Successful Business with Social Networking by Juliette Powell
“Juliette Powell has provided a timely crash course on how to leverage your business’s online presence. A must-read for any aspiring entrepreneur, activist, brand manager, or c-level executive.”
—Jeffrey Stewart, Serial Technology Entrepreneur; Founder, Mimeo, Urgent Career, and Monitor110
“Reading Juliette Powell’s book is like perusing the secret trade documents of the most connected social butterfly. Upon first meeting Juliette, she immediately grabbed me by the arm and introduced me to the most important person in the room. When you pick up her book, it’s the same experience. She reaches through the pages and gives the reader entry to the halls of power through online networking.”
—Amy Shuster, Editorial Producer, MSNBC
“Juliette knows her way around a social network; she regales us with tales and practical advice from the plastic porous mediascape of today.”
—David Thorpe, Global Director of Innovation, Ogilvy & Mather
“If you are in business or starting one, and wonder what the heck all this talk about social networking is about, this book is the best quick guide I’ve seen. It’s full of juicy stories, backed up by sound social science, lucidly explained.”
—Howard Rheingold, Author, Smartmobs; Professor, Stanford and Berkeley
“The exciting new world of online social networking is demonstrating the profound power of these truths to change the very fabric of society as we know it. Our interactions, relationships, and values are changing faster than most of us can comprehend. For some, the pace of this change is alarming. For others it is empowering. In 33 Million People in the Room Juliette Powell takes us on a funfilled tour of this rapidly changing hypo-manic digital ecosystem simultaneously providing both practical advice and an insightful commentary on the increasing importance of authenticity in modern culture. Along the way we meet a hilarious cast of characters and gain a behind-the-scenes glimpse into real social networking success stories showing how to leverage the power of this modern phenomenon to achieve meaningful social and economic results for you and your business.”
—Michael Spencer, CTO, ASMALLWORLD
“Juliette Powell has captured the strength, excitement, and opportunity of social networks in this compelling work. Opening with an arresting saga about Chris Anderson’s debut as the new TED owner, she deftly sketches vignette after vignette that will have you thinking—why not me? Social networking power is awesome for those who have experienced it—but most people remain skeptical, guarded, and untrusting. Give up control? All control? Well, as she explains—YES! I’ve tried it, using six hundred fifty ‘coauthors’ to write a book—a book no one could have written, but to which ‘everyone’ could contribute. It was hard, very hard at first, to relinquish control, just as Powell describes. But the benefits she outlines are real. Try it—you’ll see!”
—Chuck House, Executive Director, Media X, Stanford University
“Digital society is all about expanding and energizing connections between people and ideas in ways we are just starting to understand. 33 Million People in the Room shares the perspective of an insider and shows…

Crimson City – by Liz MaverickOnce, this was the City of Angels. The angels are no longer in charge. From the extravagant appetites of the vampire world above, to the gritty defiance of the werewolves below, the specter of darkness lives around every corner, the hope of paradise in every heart. All walk freely with humans in a tentative peace, but to live in Los Angeles is to balance on the edge of a knife. One woman knows better than most that death lurks here in nights of bliss or hails of UV bullets. She’s about to be tested, to taste true thirst. She’s about to regain the power she’s long been denied. And Fleur Dumont is about to meet the one man who may understand her: a tormented protector who’s lost his way and all he loved. – Fantasy Futuristic Ghost, Vampire & Werewolf Fiction (FFGVWF)
Empowered: Unleash Your Employees, Energize Your Customers, and Transform Your Business – by Josh Bernoff and Ted Schadler
Is Your Company EMPOWERED for Success?
You know it’s happening within your organization. Your people, armed with cheap, accessible technology, are connecting with customers and building innovative new solutions. But who are these creative problem-solvers? How can you be one? And just as important—how can you lead them?
We call them HEROes: highly empowered and resourceful operatives. Your company needs them because in the age of Twitter, iPhones, Facebook, YouTube, and an ever-evolving torrent of Web information, your customers now come to the table armed with more data and access than ever before, and in many cases, your company is overmatched.
In Empowered, Forrester’s Josh Bernoff—coauthor of the pioneering book Groundswell—and Ted Schadler explain how to transform your company by unleashing the mighty force of these HEROes. Like John Bernier and Ben Hedrington at Best Buy, who built an army of 2,500 tweeting employees to reach out to customers online. Or Ross Inglis, who tapped into Internet computing resources to open an entirely new customer channel for Thomson Reuters. Or John Stadick, who equipped 600 sales staff with iPhones and boosted profits at his construction rental company.
The truth is, one in three of your information workers already use easily accessible technologies that your company does not sanction. Empowered gives you a prescription for embracing this covert innovation. At the heart of a HERO-powered business is a new pact between these critical employees, company managers, and the IT department: HEROes build new solutions to meet customer needs, management sets clear rules while encouraging more experimentation, and IT expands its role to both support and secure these solutions.
Fueled by data from Forrester Research, Empowered is packed with the business tools and information necessary to move your organization several steps ahead of the competition:
- Statistical analysis of the 16% of customers who account for 80% of the online influence
- The four-step IDEA process to transform customer-facing service, marketing, and mobile applications
- A tool to score HERO projects on value and effort, to offer guidance on which projects to support
- The HERO index: A scorecard of the industries and departments with the most—and the fewest—HEROes
- Roadmaps for collaboration systems that stimulate and support HERO innovation
- The game plan for IT’s new role as a key partner in technology ideas throughout the company
- Dozens of case studies and examples from firms in every industry, from retail to business services Armed with an arsenal of exciting and valuable new technologies, your employees are already transforming the way you do business. You can lead them or block them—it’s your choice. Empowered will help you make the right decision.

Triple Exposure
by Colleen Thompson

A mystery writer is forced to reconsider her policy against dating when she is protected from death threats by the sexiest cop she’s ever seen.
by Briane Keene
One morning the residents of Walden, Virginia, woke to find themselves cut off from the rest of the world by an impenetrable wall of darkness.
Prim and proper preschool teacher Lizzie Brown is on the verge of her thirtieth birthday when her hitherto unknown grandmother shows up, quickly followed by a demon erupting out of her toilet who Lizzie surprisingly manages to blast into “a million flecks of light.” Raised by distant adoptive parents, Lizzie had no idea that she was born to be a demon slayer. Her granny, a biker who communes with spirits in a metal lawn shed, then takes her to join her coven of senior biker witches who will help her defeat the demons who want to kill Lizzie before she can go after them. Along the way, Lizzie meets sexy shape-shifter Dimitri Kallinkikos, a sometime griffin who claims to be her protector but may have a hidden agenda that will take her straight to hell. This rollicking paranormal comedy will appeal to fans of Dakota Cassidy, MaryJanice Davidson, and Tate Hallaway. –Diana Tixier, Herald Review
With its sharp, witty writing and unique characters, Angie Fox’s contemporary paranormal debut is fabulously fun. –The Chicago Tribune
Cybill Disobedience, by Cybill Shepherd
and Aimee Lee Ball
“A riveting, candid, fresh and self-revealing book.” — — Liz Smith
“Gutsy.” — — San Francisco Examiner
“Nobody kisses and tells like Cybill Shepherd.” — — New York Daily News
‘How I survived beauty pageants, Elvis, sex, Bruce Willis, lies, marriage, motherhood, Hollywood, and the irrepressible urge to say what you think.’
From wholesome beauty queen to saucy cover girl, from heartbreaking movie star (THE LAST PICTURE SHOW, TAXI DRIVER) to one of television’s most loved comediennes (MOONLIGHTING, CYBILL), Cybill Shepherd is renowned as sassy, shocking and sexy. In CYBILL DISOBEDIENCE, she opens her heart with the wit and honesty of a star who’s seen and knows it all.
Billy Boyle is a Boston cop, from a family of Boston cops, but he is a reluctant soldier who prefers walking the beat in Southie to fighting Nazis. Using her cousin by marriage, a certain General Eisenhower, Billy’s mother lands her son a seemingly soft job with Ike’s staff in London. But Ike wants Billy to use his investigative know-how to sniff out a possible spy in the Allies’ inner circle. Young Billy, oversold by his mother as a crackerjack detective, is definitely in over his head, especially when it turns out that the apparent suicide of a Norwegian dignitary may have been the work of the spy. Benn has a tantalizing premise here, but he doesn’t quite deliver on it: his prose slips into wartime cliches a little too often, and the supporting love story reeks of WWII melodrama. Yet the action builds to a suspenseful climax, and there is even a hint of moral ambiguity in the wrap-up. A not entirely satisfactory debut, then, but Ken Follett fans will want to give Billy and his uncle a chance to develop. —Bill Ott, Booklist
Frank Morrison “Mickey” Spillane (1918-2006) was the creator of the hard-boiled Mike Hammer detective novel series and sold over 225 million copies of his books around the world. The UK Kindle Store is currently offering several of his full-length classics at prices so low that you can pick up all five of those listed below without it setting you back much more than two quid all told….
But first, a word from … Today’s Sponsor
Speaking of hard-boiled, I’ve been holding out on you.
About three weeks ago I received an email that began “Stephen, I hope you will consider my book, The Storm Killer, for your Kindle Nation Shorts program.” I was struck immediately by the humility of tone in the sender’s email message. The next morning, after I had read most of the novel, I went back and read the email again and I was even more astonished by that humility, because I knew the book I was reading was the real thing, in a way that one expects to come upon only once or twice in a year of reading.
I quickly wrote back and scheduled the publication of the excerpt here for today, and for the past three weeks I’ve had a strange feeling that must be something akin to what Olympic judges must go through when they know that the best skating or gymnastic performance must be coming near the end of the program. I’ve been lucky enough to be able to share some great stuff with you here over the past three weeks, and I’ve let you know what I liked. But I’ve also been aware — not to put fine a point on the analogy since fiction cannot be rated in the linear way that one rate a performance, say, on the balance beam — that I wanted to save the 10s, because I knew The Storm Killer was coming. If a novel could be a 10, I’d say this is a 10. It is a wonderfully ambitious historical novel, and the author, Mike Jastrzebski, delivers on its potential in every way, with every sense, and with an astonishing ability to create, or perhaps recreate, the times and places and characters in this work of fiction.
Let me share a couple of reviews, and then I’ll leave it up to you whether to click on the link to buy or sample this novel or to check out the generous excerpt in a recent Free Kindle Nation Shorts excerpt.
“Time: 1935. Place: New York City. Crime beat reporter Jim Locke gets sucked into a quagmire of death, deceit, and danger when his actress sister is murdered – and he becomes the prime suspect. When he uncovers a pattern of similar murders, he is convinced that a serial killer is on the loose. But the police aren’t buying it, and it’s up to Jim to stop the madman. The hunt takes him from the grimy streets and smoke-filled bars of Manhattan to deceptively laid-back Key West, just as a killer storm bears down on the island. THE STORM KILLER has it all: hard-boiled narrative, gripping suspense, period detail, an unlikely hero battling his inner demons, and a stunning conclusion that you won’t see coming. Highly recommended!”
–Miriam Auerbach, author of Dirty Harriet Rides Again
“Mike Jastrzebski’s stunning historical debut takes readers back into the hard-boiled world of Chandler and Hammett — and brings Ernest Hemingway back to life in a book as big as the man himself. The Storm Killer, a top grade thriller with a heavy dose of noir, hurtles you from New York to Key West at a pace that will leave you breathless.”
-Christine Kling, author of Surface Tension, Cross Current, Bitter End, and Wrecker’s Key
“Jastrzebski’s hard-boiled thriller storms through New York’s gritty streets down to Prohibition-era Key West with Ernest Hemingway providing the tailwind. A crisp, fast-paced detective story, which Humphrey Bogart would have loved to play the lead in.”
–Award-winning author Sharon Potts, In Their Blood.

4.7 out of 5 stars across 9 customer reviews
The Winnie-the-Pooh stories have been loved by generations of children since Pooh, Christopher Robin, Piglet, Rabbit, Owl, Kanga, Roo and Eeyore first made their appearance in 1926. In this first volume we meet all the friends from the Hundred Acre Wood, celebrate Eeyore’s birthday, go on an “expotition” to the North Pole and lay a Heffalump trap. Accompanied by E.H. Shepard’s original illustrations in colour, this is an ideal book for bedtime stories. —Philippa Reece

In real–life conflict resolution situations, one size does not fit all. Just as a mechanic does not fix every car with the same tool, the conflict resolution practitioner cannot hope to resolve every dispute using the same technique. Practitioners need to be comfortable with a wide variety of tools to diagnose different problems, in vastly different circumstances, with different people, and resolve these conflicts effectively.
The Conflict Resolution Toolbox gives you all the tools you need: eight different models for dealing with the many conflict situations you encounter in your practice.
This book bridges the gap between theory and practice and goes beyond just one single model to present a complete toolbox – a range of models that can be used to analyze, diagnose, and resolve conflict in any situation. It shows mediators, negotiators, managers, and anyone needing to resolve conflict how to simply and effectively understand and assess the situations of conflict they face. And it goes a step further, offering specific, practical guidance on how to intervene to resolve the conflict successfully.
Each model provides a different and potentially useful angle on the problem, and includes worksheets and a step–by–step process to guide the reader in applying the tools.
- Offers eight models to help you understand the root causes of any conflict.
- Explains each model′s focus, what kind of situations it can be useful in and, most importantly, what interventions are likely to help.
- Provides you with clear direction on what specific actions to choose to resolve a particular type of conflict effectively.
- Features a detailed case study throughout the book, to which each model is applied.
- Additional examples and case studies unique to each chapter give the reader a further chance to see the models in action.
- Includes practical tools and worksheets that you can use in working with these models in your practice.
The Conflict Resolution Toolbox equips any practitioner to resolve a wide range of conflicts. Mediators, negotiators, lawyers, managers and supervisors, insurance adjusters, social workers, human resource and labour relations specialists, and others will have all the tools they need for successful conflict resolution.
Literary Fiction, Published by AmazonEncore
LENGTH: novella, approximately 20,000 words, 96 pages in the trade paperback edition
Peter Leroy recalls his maternal grandfather’s attempt to build a shortwave radio, a project that begins with an article in Impractical Craftsman magazine promising “hour after interminable hour of baffling precision work.” After many, many hours spent watching his grandfather labor at his basement workbench, Peter at last gets to put the earphones on, flip the switch, and twiddle the dials. Through the crackling and sussurous static he detects the sounds of love and lust, joy and sorrow, hope and loss.
“Reading the Peter Leroy saga is akin to watching a champion juggler deftly keep dozens of balls in the air while executing an intricate double-time dance routine-all without breathing hard. . . . Sentimental, loving, raucous, wise, and great fun, this is simply not to be missed.”
Booklist
“[Kraft’s Peter Leroy] series is smart, funny, warmly inviting, and delightfully impossible to define.”
Kate Bernheimer, The Oregonian
“Eric Kraft’s essential subject is suburban boyhood-in particular, that moment when it loses its innocence. . . . Like Lawrence Sterne, Kraft is unashamedly sentimental, digressive, and extremely funny; like Proust, profoundly nostalgic and obsessed with loss. The typical Kraft novel is a laugh-out-loud read with undertones of grief and ruefulness. Almost all of his books revolve around a single individual, Peter Leroy, who is now . . . as fully realized as any character in current American literature. . . . Under the surface humor, Kraft’s take on the national experience is thoughtful, disturbing, and unlike that of any other American writer.”
Anthony Brandt, Men’s Journal
“The Personal History, Adventures, Experiences & Observations of Peter Leroy is one of the biggest, funniest, sweetest, and looniest undertakings in contemporary American fiction.”
John Strausbaugh, New York Press

Everyone needs a change of pace now and then, and today’s free listings in the Kindle Store (as well as a few additional listings for under a dollar) will focus on a diverse group of spiritual titles as well as some fiction from religious publishers….
But first … a word from Today’s Sponsor
(Editor’s Note: For plenty of perfectly good reasons, I may not have the credentials to make spiritual recommendations, or even spiritual reading recommendations, to anyone. And when Rev. Larry Davies contacted me recently to ask if I thought it would be appropriate for his Sowing Seeds of Faith blog to serve as a sponsor for Kindle Nation Daily, I must admit I hesitated before answering. My life certainly has its own very private spiritual underpinnings, but I grow uncomfortable very quickly when such things take on a social currency or when discussion around them becomes sectarian.
But then I subscribed to Larry’s blog and began reading his four or five posts a week, and I thought: this is exactly the kind of thing that can inspire people, Christians and perhaps even many non-Christians too, to find spirituality — as well as wit and wisdom — in the experience of everyday life. I frequently put on my headphones to connect my ears to my Kindle and listen via text-to-speech to Larry’s posts in the morning on my first of several daily walks. Those walks amount to a kind of “church” or “temple” for me, but as I said recently to Betty, “If Larry was a preacher here in town I could even imagine starting to go to church again.” Anyway, the great thing about the Kindle Store’s free 14-day trial for blogs and other periodicals is that you can check out Larry’s Sowing Seeds of Faith for free and see if it appeals to you. -S.W.)
Rev. Larry E Davies
$1.99 per month following the trial
Sowing Seeds of Faith is written for those who want to draw closer to God. Today, more than ever, people feel themselves disconnected and isolated from each other, from their churches and from God. Author of four books, Larry Davies takes a fresh look at what it means to be a Christian, to be a church and to be in ministry.
Here’s a letter from a third-grader that popped up in today’s post, “A Fresh Look at Grandma,” and I couldn’t resist writing Larry and asking his permission to share it with you here:
“Grandmother’s don’t have to do anything except be there. They’re so old they shouldn’t play hard or run. It is enough if they drive us to the market where the pretend horse is and have lots of dimes ready. Or if they take us for walks, they should slow down past things like pretty leaves and caterpillars. They should never say ‘hurry up.’ Usually, grandmothers are fat, but not too fat to tie your shoes. They wear glasses and funny underwear. They can take their teeth and gums off. Everybody should try to have a grandmother, especially if they don’t have a television, because they are the only grownups who have time.”
- Monthly Price: $1.99 includes wireless delivery via Amazon Whispernet
- Kindle Blogs are auto-delivered wirelessly to your Kindle and updated throughout the day so you can stay current.
- It’s risk free—all Kindle Blog subscriptions start with a 14-day free trial. You can cancel at any time during the free trial period. If you enjoy your subscription, do nothing and it will automatically continue at the regular monthly price.
- Don’t have a Kindle? Get yours here.
- Product Description Kindle blogs are fully downloaded onto your Kindle so you can read them even when you’re not wirelessly connected. And unlike RSS readers which often only provide headlines, blogs on Kindle give you full text content and images, and are updated wirelessly throughout the day.
