Kindle Nation Daily Bargain Book Alert: WEST PACIFIC SUPERS: RISING TIDE is our eBook of the Day at just $2.99, and Here’s a Free Sample!

Here’s the set-up for K.M. Johnson-Weider’s West Pacific Supers:  Rising Tide, just $2.99 on Kindle:

Imagine a world like our own but with superheroes. Would the superheroes change the world or would the world change the superheroes?

It’s 2013 and West Pacific Supers is the professional superhero team for the city of West Pacific in northern California. It’s hard to know what’s more dangerous for the members of West Pacific Supers: the supervillains out to destroy the city or the superazzi determined to uncover all of their dirty secrets. If juggling heroics and public relations weren’t hard enough, the 2013 Season begins with a shocking death. Now new team members must be recruited to counter two major threats: a scientist with an insane plan that threatens California and an enemy from within West Pacific Supers itself. The team will succeed only after taming their massive egos and getting help from unlikely sources. Unfortunately, just like winning fame and fortune, beating the bad guys always comes at a heavy price.

From the Author:

We have a lot of characters in Rising Tide, but each of them is distinct.  Each one sees the world in a different way and each has a distinctive voice. When we were writing the book, there were certain characters that either of us could write for, but there were others that resonated with one of us more than the other. We’re not going to say which, but yes, we do have favorites! Some of the key characters in West Pacific Supers: Rising Tide are as follows:

Seawolf is an obvious mutant who’s still struggling with the anti-mutant sentiments she faced as a child, even though times have changed and the non-mutant Coast Guard liaison to the team keeps trying to ask her out.

Blue Star is a four-time inductee in the Superhero Hall of Fame who can save the world but can’t salvage a relationship for the life of him. West Pacific Supers is his last chance to end his career on a high note.

Cosmic Kid is a cocky young super just coming on the team and looking to prove himself.

Camille’s decade-long marriage is threatened by her unilateral decision to return to the team that once kicked her off for refusing to wear a miniskirt costume.

Loren Polawsky isn’t a real superhero, just a real estate agent struggling to find time for vigilante heroics.

Dr. Noah Brandeis has a crazy plan to make geological history and, with the help of a few insane supervillains, he may just succeed.

From the reviewers:

I really enjoyed this book. It was a fun and easy book to read. It was X-Men meets baseball in regards to the the super heros. They were like real people with real problems like us everyday folks.  The West Pacific Supers (WPS) started with a solid team and then two of their major team members were killed. At least 1/2 of the team were put together from a combination of new members and former members. They did not get much time to get to know each other before they were forced to face a few crisis in a a years time.   –  Super

It kept me hooked, though (mostly because of the characters), and I would be interested to see where they (the authors and the heroes) go from here.  –  Scott Evans

Great Start to a new series!  Supernatural Devices is a refreshing book in the crowded young adult fantasy genre. Ms. Gow has crafted a fun and fascinating series with a heroine I admire. Scarlett Seely is the type of girl whom you wish all Victorian ladies were like. Modern ladies, too. Running through the streets of London in hot pursuit of fey and vampires show what a strong character she is  –  Jo Wyatt

Midwest Book Awards, Finalist – Reference Category –Midwest Independent Publishers Association, May 12, 2011

From the reviewers:

Drawing on Gilgamesh, the Book of Job, the myth of Orpheus, his own life, and the lives of Ezra Pound and Jack Henry Abbott, with a little James Hillman thrown in, Rember (Traplines) argues that the only reason to write is to tell the truth about the soul-less, life-denying, nature-destroying culture we inhabit.   Rember’s effort often reads like a cross between self-help manual (face the darkness!) and a teacher’s cri de coeur (go deeper; don’t make me read another puerile story!).   –  Publisher’s Weekly

“Rember’s MFA in a Box: A Why to Write Book is more than an advice book with a catchy title. What makes it different than the many, many books about writing on the market today is the way Rember engages his readers in some of the issues every writer faces–writing about place, about family, about grief–not as problems to be overcome but as issues to be understood.” –Jeff Baker, Book Editor, The (Portland) Oregonian, January 3, 2011

“Witty, audacious, and wise, John Rember’s MFA in a Box is a unique and valuable book that addresses the subject–and the life experience–of Creative Writing from both a practical perspective and in a manner so highly personable you’ll read it like a memoir–and want to meet the author. Rember has the storyteller’s magic. You’ll be enthralled. And walk away a more astute and vibrant writer.” –Robin Metz, author of Unbidden Angel, winner of the Rainer Maria Rilke International Poetry Award, and Director of the Program in Creative Writing at Knox College, January 1, 2011

“John Rember’s MFA in a Box should be on every writer’s bookshelf, right next to On Writing by Stephen King and other great books on the art and craft of creative writing.” — Randy Richardson, President, Chicago Writers Association — (chicagowrites.org), January 2011

Here’s the set-up for P.A. Seasholtz’s The Tongue of Hauden, just 99 Cents on Kindle:

Unity without strength, harmony without power – Hauden still weeps with the blood of slaughtered innocents.

Laedian Fayersae’s long struggle to unite the Houses and the Nations has succeeded, but despite her efforts that have ended the bloodlust, the cruel Dasyu and the ghastly Plague Bringers now vie for dominion over all, threatening to destroy the Othar of Hauden before they can coalesce around the power of the ancient fires.

With their decision to fight, the Aktsi’a Othar plant the seeds of a new hope, a hope that the Khe’kenha Othar will discover their true role as servants of the land.

From the Author:

With great pleasure, I present the third book in the Harmony of the Othar Saga, Tongue of Hauden. I hope you have enjoyed our journey so far, and I am excited to continue the saga with this latest installment. The story has taken on a life of its own, and I would be lying if I said penning it has not become easier as the saga progresses. Again, I would like to thank everyone who has come along for the ride, and I hope book three brings as much enjoyment in the reading as it did in the writing.

Visit Amazon’s P.A. Seasholtz Page

Living quietly in a Minneapolis suburb, I have been writing the Harmony of the Othar Saga in various incarnations for more years than I am willing to admit.

A story which began in college has, after many years, reached fruition with my first novel, Heart of Hauden. During the intervening years, I have helped raise my daughter, Katja, with my wife, Ann, worked in the information technology field, primarily as a database administrator, and received the support of friends and family to write as time permitted.

After many years of writing in fits and starts, I stepped away from a full-time job to concentrate on completing this story. Perhaps it was nothing more than a classic mid-life crisis, but the result has allowed me to begin something I’ve dreamed about for decades. My only hope in presenting book one in the Harmony of the Othar Saga is that you will find as much enjoyment reading it as I have found in creating it.

Melanie Atkins’ MARKED FOR MURDER is our 5-Star Kindle Nation eBook of the Day, and Here’s a Free Sample!

Here’s the set-up for Melanie Atkin’s Marked for Murder, just $5.99 on Kindle:

Detective Jonah McKee and his fellow Keller County Cops believe a beautiful amnesia victim is the key to solving a brutal serial killer case.

McKee is forced to juggle caring for his rowdy three year-old son and protecting and the  victim, who was targeted by a vicious serial murderer… or was she?

Brooke Wilson finally remembers her own name — and the name of the man trying to kill her — and the terrifying memory sends her on the run again.

Jonah is forced to hide his son and go with her in order to protect her, and along the way they fall in love.

From a reviewer:

Marked for Murder by Melanie Atkins is the first novel in the Keller County Cops series. Detective Jonah McKee believes he finally has a live witness to help solve a serial killer spree when a beautiful amnesia victim is found wrapped in a tarp on the side of a road. Dubbed the Handyman because such tarps are often used by painters, the killer has eluded capture and victims are found tossed and wrapped like garbage. This one’s drivers license says she’s Ellen Robinson, but is she, or is she an attorney from Chicago? Who is this woman who has invaded his and his son’s life before he even realizes it? Before he knows what’s hit him, the detective is on the run determined to protect her and has to leave his son with a friend to keep him out of harm’s reach.

If you like on-the-edge chase stories with romance, this is your novel. It’s edgy, set in Mississippi. I found it a wonderful quick read. I loved the descriptions of the Mississippi land and the wooded camp where they think they’re safe, since it’s secluded and high on stilts to keep it from flooding. I felt for the victim. The author does a great job of making you care about her and uses rich detail.  –  Barbara Robinson

Kindle Nation Daily Bargain Book Alert: Elisabeth Nelson’s 5-star Civil War novel HIGH GROUND is our eBook of the Day at just $2.99, and Here’s a Free Sample!

Here’s the set-up for Elizabeth Nelson’s High Ground, just $2.99 on Kindle:

“This damn war has cost me everything I love…everything that mattered, and I don’t even know why I’m fighting anymore.”

In 1860, Captain Garrett Fitzwilliam is living in the center of American politics, viewing the divisive issues of the day through his nonpartisan lawyer eyes. His life is defined by love of country and faith in the rule of law…until Rachael Hayes Kendrick enters his world. This sassy young widow captures more than the cocky captain’s imagination. She proves to him that love is indeed an act of faith, and Rachael’s faith in Garrett is indomitable. Her faith will sustain him when war divides the North and the South; his misguided sense of duty may cost him her love. But for what exactly did he pay so high a price?

In the wake of war, everything Garrett believes in, the core of his existence, is collapsing. The Union army suffers repeated defeats not owing entirely to the brilliance of Robert E. Lee’s command of the Confederate army, and in Washington, a very different enemy has emerged. This insidious enemy poses a threat to the United States that Garrett never thought possible. But this enemy no officer may dare to challenge.

So how will Garrett Fitzwilliam defend his country when his country’s survival depends upon an army sabotaged by its own incompetence? Or was his country lost when the man who swore an oath to preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution imprisoned his political foes?

Would the answers matter so much to Garrett if Rachael loved him again?

From the author:

There are hundreds, if not thousands, of American Civil War novels. I haven’t read them all, but I have yet to read a novel that approaches the subject as I do in High Ground.

While writing the story, I made a conscious effort to view the period through the eyes of someone living at that time, characters who don’t have the advantage of hindsight. I point that out because it’s only in hindsight that we recognize the success of Lincoln’s presidency and his handling of the crisis that threatened the nation. At the same time, we have simplified the conflict to a single issue, slavery. I don’t deny that slavery was a critical factor, but I believe the issues dividing the nation were more complicated, and yet, all those issues are first and foremost about power–political and economic power, which was divided between competing regional interests–North and South.

In High Ground, I attempt to provide a broader framework within which to view the War Between the States. From there, I tell the story of a man who dedicated his life to serving, protecting and defending his country, but sees the freedom and democracy guaranteed in the Constitution, everything he is fighting for, being sacrificed in Lincoln’s efforts to save the Union.

If I have learned anything in the process of writing my novel, it is that in one way or another history repeats itself. During times of war, we still have to ask ourselves what freedoms will we sacrifice, or can we sacrifice, and still be America?

From a reviewer:

I stayed up all night reading this book. I have to be honest, I didn’t expect much because in my experience, Civil War romance novels are usually of the bodice ripper variety and painful to read.  This book, however, was NOT. The characters were real, sympathetic and fully fleshed out. No one in this book was idealized or too perfect to be a real person, and that’s hugely important. The history was woven through the story masterfully, and was as much part of every scene as the characters were, and accounts of the battles were gripping and extremely visual. All in all, I fell in love with Garrett, wanted to be Rachael, and rooted for them throughout, so this book is definitely on the WIN pile.   –  Meghan Lyons
