Kindle Nation Bargain Book Alert: Andrew Biss’ THE END OF THE WORLD is our eBook of the Day, at just $2.99 with 4.1 Stars on 7 Reviews, and Here’s a Free Sample – Plus, Scroll Down to Save 80% on the Kindle Daily Deal!

Here’s the set-up for Andrew Biss’ The End of the World, just $2.99 on Kindle:

Are you prepared for what comes next?

Accustomed to a life of cosseted seclusion at home with his parents, Valentine is suddenly faced with making his own way in the world. His new life is quickly upended, however, when he’s mugged at gunpoint. Finding shelter at a mysterious inn run by the dour Mrs. Anna, he soon encounters a Bosnian woman with a hole where her stomach used to be, an American entrepreneur with a scheme to implant televisions into people’s foreheads, and a Catholic priest who attempts to lure him down inside a kitchen sink. Then things start getting strange…

In this story based loosely around the state of Bardo from The Tibetan Book of the Dead – an intermediate state where the dead arrive prior to rebirth – dying is the easy part. Getting out of Bardo and returning to the land of the living is a far more perilous proposition, and unless you know what you’re doing…you might never leave.

An odd, yet oddly touching tale of life, death, and the space in-between.

From the reviewers:

“The End of the World is very much Alice in Wonderland meets Beetlejuice.”  “Humorous, deceptively light and drier than dust.”  “Jerky for the mind.”  –The Compulsive Reader

“A surreal, clever literary novella.”  “Weird, funny and philosophical – recommended.” –Helen Smith, author of Alison Wonderland, The Miracle Inspector, Being Light

Eccentric, surreal, and heart-warming.  If you can imagine your literary sensibility having feet, with one foot planted in surrealism and the other in existentialism, this book will tickle your toes in a singular fashion with its extravagantly eccentric banter. The story races along at a cracking pace, with barely a pause to draw breath.  –  P.J. Salisbury

Fun and quirky.  This is kind of a bizarre little novel, but I thoroughly enjoyed it. It’s kind of hard to tell what’s going on (though I had my suspicions), but it is not unpleasant. It’s a fun quick read, and very well written.  –   Khrystine D. Kelsey

Kindle Nation Bargain Book Alert: Darcie Chan’s runaway bestseller THE MILL RIVER RECLUSE is our eBook of the Day at just 99 Cents with 4.4 Stars on 130 Reviews, and Here’s a Free Sample – Plus, Scroll Down to Save 75% on the Kindle Daily Deal!

Here’s the set-up for Darcie Chan’s The Mill River Recluse, just 99 Cents on Kindle:

Disfigured by the blow of an abusive husband, and suffering her entire life with severe social anxiety disorder, the widow Mary McAllister spends almost sixty years secluded in a white marble mansion overlooking the town of Mill River, Vermont. Her links to the outside world are few: the mail, the media, an elderly priest with a guilty habit of pilfering spoons, and a bedroom window with a view of the town below.

Most longtime residents of Mill River consider the marble house and its occupant peculiar, though insignificant, fixtures. An arsonist, a covetous nurse, and the endearing village idiot are among the few who have ever seen Mary. Newcomers to Mill River–a police officer and his daughter and a new fourth grade teacher–are also curious about the reclusive old woman. But only Father Michael O’Brien knows Mary and the secret she keeps–one that, once revealed, will change all of their lives forever.

The Mill River Recluse is a story of triumph over tragedy, one that reminds us of the value of friendship and the ability of love to come from the most unexpected of places.

From the reviewers:

In the last 5 days, the 5-Star Reviews for this novel jumped from 59 to 83 and total reviews put this novel at 4.4 Stars on 127 reviews, up from 89 a few days ago.  Currently No. 5 in the paid Kindle Store and also a NY Times and USA Today Bestseller.  It’s beautifully written, a fascinating story of a heart broken by cruelty, crippled by resulting debilitating anxiety, and surviving by a passion for the people of a small town whom she can only know from a distance.  One of my all-time favorites.  Like Kathryn Stockett and The Help, another woman with a first novel grabbing attention and praise, Chan is on a roll with readers.  At the moment, Chan’s book is No. 5 in the paid Kindle Store, while The Help is a couple steps ahead at No. 2.  Heady and well deserved company for Chan.–  Tom Dulaney, Editor, BookGorilla.com

A Stateside Maeve Binchy.  Maeve Binchy fans, pay attention: Darcie Chan is your stateside solution. Chan’s portrait of small-town life in Vermont evokes the lovable, quirky characters of  Circle of Friends  or Tara Road, but with a style and spirit all her own.   –  Lena Amarosa

WOW…amazing read. I literally could not think of anything else until I finished the book, and was really sad when I saw that the author has not published anything else YET.  –  Linda Shelton

… an amazing read and what a bargain at 99 cents!  Interesting characters and a great story …  had me hooked from the first page. I agree with another reviewer in that it can’t be pigeon holed into one genre. There is mystery, romance, crime and a bit of humor all rolled into one. You won’t be disappointed except that it has a last page. I couldn’t put it down but I didn’t want to reach the end either! –  Karen S.

Kindle Nation Bargain Book Alert: Conchie Fernandez’ UNDRAWN is our eBook of the Day at Just $2.99 with 4.9 Stars on 10 Reviews, and Here’s a Free Sample! Plus, Scroll Down to Save 75% on the Kindle Daily Deal!

Here’s the set-up for Conchie Fernandez’ Undrawn, just $2.99 on Kindle:

Kyle Reed stands on the verge of his lifelong dream of artistic immortality when a call from his estranged older brother Stuart puts a halt to everything in his carefully constructed life. Kyle faces the impossible decision to go back “home” and attempt to undo the many painful choices he made that severed his ties with his family and the woman he once loved.

As he steps into the house he grew up in, Kyle revisits the lives he led. He walks through the elegant rooms where he learned to keep quiet to avoid his father’s temper, and dealt with the debilitating disease that opened the doorway to his art. In his journey through his past, he assesses the perilous habits that distanced him from his family, the bitter enmities that still ravage his peace, and the surprising loyalty he finds in the people who surround him.

Kyle juggles with the present and the past and he clings to sanity through his art, the passion that has become his true north. Between the sculptures and images that fill his spaces and canvases, lie the crucial aspects of his life that he’s been avoiding for years: the icon he destroyed, the crime that still fills him with shame, and the forgiveness he never offered…or received.

From the reviewers:

“Undrawn” refreshes the trope of the tortured artist. Readers see how Kyle is haunted by his past while he suffers from occasional diabetic attacks. Kyle’s physical and mental suffering is poignantly rendered, although occasionally his diabetic attacks seem like convenient plot devices. Fernandez masterfully immerses readers in the world of Kyle’s canvas, so that they paint right along with the artist.  “Undrawn” is a well-realized portrait of conflict and forgiveness. — 4 Stars – Jill Allen, Clarion ForeWord Review, Apr. 23, 2011 (Excerpt)

Debut novelist Conchie Fernandez has shown in her just released novel Undrawn that she is a voice deserving to be heard, and heard widely. The book (particularly the ending) is emotionally satisfying and thought provoking. I endorse this work. –  R.W. Bennett

This is a compelling and thought provoking story that is also beautifully written. Definitely a page turner full of mystery, intrigue and poetry. I definitely recommend it, this is a must read.  —  R.W. Balmori

It is 1939. Roosevelt is winding down his second term in the White House. The Nazis have taken Austria, and Stalin’s Red Army is systematically eliminating the Kremlin’s enemies. Europe is going to hell in a handbasket. With isolationist sentiment running high in America, and the president’s popularity at an all-time low, Hitler seizes the moment and dispatches his secret weapon: An agent named  ‘Siegfried’ who conceals himself behind the mask of middle-class America. A chameleon who can change identities and personalities at will. A cold-blooded killer who will win the war for Germany.

A banker, linguist, and demolitions expert who has successfully infiltrated German intelligence, FBI Special Agent Thomas Cochrane is handpicked by Roosevelt for an impossible mission: To find Hitler’s spy before he carries out a plan that will remove the president from office at a critical moment in the century’s history. As Cochrane, with the  help of British Intelligence agent Laura Worthington, circles closer to his elusive quarry, a spy with supporters in the highest levels of U.S. government readies the world stage for a final act of annihilation that will alter the tide of war–and the future of the free world–in  unthinkable ways.

What the Reviewers Say:

“A super spy novel!” The Savannah News-Press

“First rate!” The Cleveland Plain-Dealer

“A Chiller!” Los Angeles Times“This 1985 espionage thriller follows FBI agent William Cochran’s efforts to stop a Nazi spy from assassinating FDR. Toss in a love affair with a British Secret Service operative and you have the makings of a page-turner. LJ’s reviewer found the book “complex in characterization, crisp in dialogue, and thorough in its background.” –Library Journal“First rate espionage tale, well researched and well written. The plot is absorbing, the pace is swift and the conclusion is unexpectedly devious! Noel Hynd is the equal of Follett (Jackdaws), Thayer (Pursuit), and my own personal favorite, the wonderful Jack Higgins and his exciting Eagles!!!!! Mr. Hynd, if you’re listening, how about another World War II espionage tale?” –A Customer

From the reviewers:

“A terrifically entertaining thriller with three finely executed set pieces strung together with nice characterization. Especially successful is Bronson, an amiable, low-key tough guy able to rescue his princess, survive brutality, and retain a sense of humor.”  – Publisher’s Weekly

“An inventive and compelling hybrid of science fiction, adventure, and political thriller, this novel follows combat pilot Jake Bronson as he investigates the origins (and extent) of the extraordinary mental powers he’s gained after enduring a medical accident. Rather than end the novel with a simple rescue operation, however, this author provides a far more intriguing and unexpected conclusion. Jake discovers a secret that could spell the end of the human race.”  —  Publisher’s Weekly Review No. 2

“If this startling debut doesn’t have you turning pages at breakneck speed, then you’re not paying attention. Rich characters, crackling dialogue, and a climactic sequence that is stunning, enervating, and innovative all at once. Richard Bard is a voice to be reckoned with.” – Rebecca Forster, USA Today Best Selling Author of over twenty political thrillers.

As a semifinalist in the Amazon Breakthrough Novel Awards, Brainrush received Amazon Expert Reviews on a preview of the first part of the book:

Amazon Expert Review No. 1:  Brainrush looks to be an exciting techno-thriller, with medical and psychological aspects. This excerpt gives me the impression that Brainrush will have the fast-paced plot that is expected in a thriller, but will also deliver a sympathetic, nuanced main character. If I had the full manuscript in front of me, I would keep reading.

Amazon Expert Review No. 2:  This is worthy of publication by a major publishing house. It’s as good as, if not better, than some of the Brad Thor books.

Brainrush is Book One of a series. Book two available December, 2011.

From Cici McNair’s memoir for Detectives Don’t Wear Seatbelts:  True Adventures of a Female P.I.:

Growing up in Mississippi, Cici McNair was always more the tomboy her mother supported than the Southern belle her father demanded. She escaped her suffocating upbringing the first chance she had to travel the world. Whether working at the Vatican in Rome or consorting with a gunrunner in Haiti, she lived a life of international adventure. When Cici finds herself in New York, divorced, broke, and fashionably starving to death in a Madison Avenue apartment, she impulsively decides to become a private detective.

But, as Cici soon learns, the world of P.I.s is tight-knit and made up almost exclusively of former law enforcement officers. By nature, they are a highly suspicious group and are especially wary of a newcomer with an untraceable past. Diligently working her way through the Yellow Pages, doggedly pursuing the slightest lead, Cici is finally hired by a private investigator willing to take a chance. The next day she’s working side by side with a pair of seasoned detectives and a skip tracer who is scary to meet but like silk on the phone. She quickly realizes she’ll need all her energy and wits to succeed in this new world.

Being a private investigator is as exciting and liberating as Cici ever dreamed, from creating a false identity on the spot on her first case in the field to surviving adrenaline-rushing car chases. Working with law enforcement, she goes undercover, dealing with the ruthless Born to Kill gang in Chinatown and the Middle Eastern counterfeiters west of Broadway. A detailed account of the hidden world and real-life cases of a P.I., this action-packed memoir is as entertaining as any detective novel you’ve ever read.
