Kindle Nation Bargain Book Alert! Bestselling Kindle suspense author Mike Jastrzebski gives 5 stars to John M. Urban’s collection URBAN SHORTS – modern-day stories of mystery, suspense, and crime. It’s our Kindle eBook of the Day at just 99 cents!

Here’s the set-up for John Urban’s Urban Shorts, just 99 Cents on Kindle:

Urban Shorts – modern-day stories of mystery, suspense, and crime.
Mystery writer John Urban provides four short stories plus an opening excerpt from his soon to be released mystery novel. The 20,500 word e-book includes:
  • “Junior Jameson” — Extreme wealth, corporate excess, and a crime that takes the reader from New York to Antigua and back.
  • “Courtesy Call” — A locally grown police officer patrols his home community on what was to be a quiet summer evening.
  • “The Association” — Retirement life in Stuart-by-the-Sea is quiet and dull. Or at least it was until now.
  • “Halfway Rock” — Urban’s protagonist, Steve Decatur, sets out in a water-borne chase on the stormy waters of Buzzards Bay.
  • “Devil’s Bridge” — An opening except of a new Steve Decatur mystery involving modern day slave trafficking that draws historical echoes from the days of the early 1800s when ships from Newport and Bristol, Rhode Island sailed the Triangle Trade.
From a reviewer:

I don’t usually read short stories but since I enjoyed Urban’s novel, A Single Deadly Truth, I decided to give his Urban shorts a try. I found all four of the stories varied and interesting and I have to say I enjoyed reading them. This doesn’t mean that I’m going on a short story reading frenzy anytime soon, but if John comes out with another story collection in the future I’ll probably pick them up. Besides, how can you beat four stories for 99 cents. — Mike Jastrzebski, author of The Storm Killer and Key Lime Blues.

Like his protagonist, John Urban has worked as a college professor and he sails the waters of Southern New England on an old wooden sailboat that he restored. He is a regular contributor to the blog Write On The Water, and his short stories have appeared in the anthologies Seasmoke and Deadfall.
The ocean was his desired destination from an early age. As a boy living a landlocked life in Western Massachusetts, nights were dedicated to reading about boats and watching Flipper and weekends were spent boating and fishing, April-to-October, on Long Island Sound.
Thoughts of a career at sea ended early after a stint at the Massachusetts Maritime Academy, but the circle of life has come around some years later in the form of the fictional world of Steve Decatur. Urban lives just outside Boston and spends his summers near the waters edge of Buzzards Bay and Rhode Island Sound. A Single Deadly Truth, published on Amazon Kindle, is Urban’s debut novel. As second Steve Decatur mystery is due out in 2011.

From the reviewers:

So many intense emotions. As a Vine reviewer for Amazon, I have read quite a few books by first-time authors and I would highly recommend this book as definitely one of the top ten I have read in recent years. — Valeria Matteson

A Brilliant Author. I always look for the author’s picture and when I saw her photo, she looked so young. Well anyway, [in a coffeehouse in St. Augustine] I just happened to look at another table in the corner and saw this young girl sitting there writing. [Gum and Pearse had a brief conversation.] She is a most humble and beautiful person and I met her personally. – David C. Gum

It was a beautiful, emotional and exciting story. I loved how the author intertwined poetry with prose. The characters were extremely well thought out and it was very easy to identify personally with several of them. – Robert A. Kurzweil.

…A story of deception, betrayal, and facing the mistakes of one’s past while dealing with the future, “A Lighter Shade of Gray” is a riveting read that has much to make readers think.
–Midwest Book Review (Oregon, WI USA)

Devon Pearse was born and raised in beautiful St. Augustine, Florida. As a child, she was surrounded by classic literary works and grew to love and cherish them as dear old friends. It was only natural that she would dream of one day being an author and joining the ranks of the creators of these other worlds, unforgettable characters and thought provoking prose.

Also an accomplished poet, Devon honed her skills while reading the poetry of Thoreau, Whitman, Longfellow, Byron, Shelley, Frost, Poe, and many others. She credits her family with instilling that love of the written word deep within her soul.

Devon’s writing has been described as “Deeply moving and exquisitely lyrical” and she strives to draw her readers into her often heartbreaking and emotionally charged world.

A Lighter Shade of Gray, which is set in her hometown of St. Augustine, Florida, is semi-autobiographical, written in the first person with the author herself as the protagonist. Drawing from events that not only altered her own life, but the lives of those closest to her, including the tragic death of a childhood friend, Devon weaves a masterful tale full of mystery, romance and the truth of living deliberately.

In addition to writing, Devon enjoys afternoons at the beach, listening to a broad range of music, amateur photography, and spending time with her friends and family. Her prized possessions include a 1911 edition of Peter and Wendy and Smiley, her stuffed hyena.

Kindle Nation Bargain Book Alert! 29 out of 32 Rave Reviews, Just $2.99 on Kindle! Our Kindle eBook of the Day, USA Today bestseller Rebecca Forster’s HOSTILE WITNESS is a Top 100 legal thriller and an “enthralling read,” says Nancy Taylor Rosenberg.

Here’s the set-up for Rebecca Forster’s Hostile Witness, just $2.99 on Kindle:

When sixteen-year-old Hannah Sheraton is arrested for the murder of her step-grandfather, the chief justice of the California Supreme court, her distraught mother turns to her old college roommate, Josie Baylor-Bates, for help.

Josie, once a hot-shot criminal defense attorney, left the fast track behind for a small practice in Hermosa Beach, California. But Hannah Sheraton intrigues her and, when the girl is charged as an adult, Josie cannot turn her back.

But the deeper she digs the more Josie realizes that politics, the law and family relationships create a combustible and dangerous situation. When the horrible truth is uncovered it can save Hannah Sheraton or destroy them both.

Author’s note:

“This story was inspired by a case my husband handled. As a superior court judge he had to sentence a minor to life in prison. It made me wonder how I felt about minors arrested for violent crimes. Are they most vulnerable among us – capable of horrible violence, perceived as adults and yet emotionally still children?” Rebecca Forster (rebeccaforster.com)

From the reviewers:

“An enthralling read, with colorful, well-developed characters and the unique atmosphere of the California beach communities.” – Nancy Taylor Rosenberg

“Blending complex psychological character portraits with spot-on accurage courtroom drmaa, Forster’s riveting legal thriller keeps the plot twists coming until the last, satisfying page.” – Alafair Burke

Absolutely riveting from start to finish. A wondrously human heart beats inside the chest of this particular lawyer, though, and that – plus a beautifully constructed plot – is what makes Hostile Witness a novel you just can’t put down. – Daniel Jolley

Hostile Witness is an excellent start of an interesting new series. The pace was brisk and readable. The story sucks you in immediately, and the ending is full of thrills and surprises. – Bob A. Reiss

I marketed a world-class spa when it was still called a gym and did business in China before there were western toilettes at the Great Wall. Then I wrote a book on a crazy dare and found my passion.

Now, I am a USA Today best selling author with more than 20 books to my name – and if you ask me where all those words came from I’d be hard pressed to tell you. All I know is that I wake up with a story in my head and go to bed the same way.

My specialty is legal thrillers and The Witness Series, featuring my beach-rat, volleyball playing attorney Josie Bates and her teenage ward Hannah, have really captured readers’ imaginations. But I also like to stretch the thriller genre a bit. Before Her Eyes, for instance, has a fantasy overlay on a murder mystery that I really found intriguing. Wilde’s Gamble is a romantic suspense.

I teach at UCLA Writers Program and work with The Young Writers Conference, a program that helps motivate middle school children to explore the power of words. I think I am particularly drawn to kids and writing because both my sons have always had a passion for it. Eric is a playwright and Alex is in film.

When I’m not writing I’m traveling, on a tennis court, working a sewing machine or reading. You can find out more about me, my travels and my work-in-progress at www.rebeccaforster.com

The Day the Dogs Talked will delight readers, young and old with its wonderful story and charming illustrations.

From the reviewers:

This is one of those books that I started while on vacation and couldn’t stop until I was finished. As a dog lover I was intrigued from the title alone. But the book is more than just a dog story. It is more in the genre of social commentary and satire ala Orwell’s animal farm. The book is gritty, funny and very well written. It is well paced and I would be very interested in additional work from this author. – J.M. Marshall

Professor Adam’s achievements as an educator and author far surpass what most people could ever hope to accomplish in their lifetime, and given the profound insights he has shared in his works before, at the end of the book I could not help but wonder if he had even more fun writing this fable than those who read it will have. – Michael Link

While at first The Days the Dogs Talked may seem to be a purely lightweight novel, a “beach book” in a sense, it also addresses serious topics of the vagaries of political action on the local level. For example, the author skillfully has two characters engage in a philosophical debate which is thorough without being pedantic and boring. — Susan Abbott
