Silent Retribution Man

by J Sato
4.3 stars – 29 reviews
Text-to-Speech and Lending: Enabled
Here’s the set-up:

“Instead of Due Process, I give the Process that is Due”

Lionel Seaver has had it with the indecent, arrogant, rude, mean-spirited and for lack of more negative adjectives, pricks in today’s society. Its about time these people get what’s coming to them. And its not just about people who break the law either. It is not always against the law to be a prick, on the contrary, it is often rewarded. The jerks, bullies and greedy don’t go to jail. They use their power and possession to abuse people. Decency and kindness are often viewed a sign of weakness, a trait that can be taken advantage of . Where conscience and law fail to direct people to do the “right” thing, Seaver decides to step in and secretly and violently set them on a different course.

Seaver lost his family, job and identity in society. He embarks on a course to nevertheless create what he deems is a positive existence for himself as Silent Retribution Man. He accomplishes this by systematically stalking and beating people up who do anything from being rude to waiters, to scamming people out of money, to sexually harassing subordinates, to molesting children. Nothing too big or small, whoever has it coming is going to get it.

Lester Burnham in American Beauty was “an ordinary guy with nothing to lose,” Tyler Durden in Fight Club, once he lost “everything was free to do anything,” Seaver is all of the above, and wants to become the guy in the conclusion of the news story that beat the jerk up because he had it coming. The journey is long and Seaver is forced to confront his own conscience, sanity, and ultimately his mortality.

Apart from Love is not your typical love story. It is all-consuming, heart-wrenching, and dark.

My Own Voice (“As told by Anita”):

Falling in love with Lenny should have been the end to all of Anita’s troubles. But when family secrets start unraveling. His ex-wife, Natasha, is succumbing to a mysterious disease. How can Anita compete with her shadow? How can she find a voice of her own?

And when his estranged son, Ben, comes back and lives in the same small apartment, can she keep the balance between the two men, whose desire for her is marred by guilt and blame?

The White Piano (“As told by Ben”):

A STRANGE BEGINNING: A STAND-ALONE Biographical NOVEL (The Lord Byron Series Book 1)

by Gretta Curran Browne
4.4 stars – 493 reviews
Text-to-Speech and Lending: Enabled
Here’s the set-up:

He was later to become known as “The most beautiful and most famous man in England” — but not yet….

As a boy he thought his name was George Gordon, but that wasn’t true. He thought he would grow up poor, but that also wasn’t true. Long before he rose from obscurity to poetic stardom and became Britain’s first superstar, he had learned that his true surname was Byron

Although presented in Novel form and cloaked in the style of fiction,, this is the true and meticulously researched story of the most iconic superstar of his time – Lord Byron. Ignoring all the old and unproven rumours and sensational scandals fabricated at the time of the 19th Century, which have been regurgitated by biographers every generation – all the events in this book come from the people who physically were THERE with Byron at the time. If they were not there, or did not write about it, or did not see the events as eyewitnesses – they are NOT included in this book.

Beginning when he is a boy of ten years old, we join George Gordon when he is living a miserable life with his manic Scottish mother in a few rented rooms above a shop in Aberdeen, unaware that his true heritage is with the English aristocracy – who soon come to claim him.

A life of wealth and privilege is then bestowed upon him, which eventually sets the stage for him to prove his own individual worth, in his own way, and in his own time.

Meticulously researched, and adapted into novel form, ‘A Strange Beginning’ is the first of a series of books about the most iconic young man of his time, whose fame still lives on today.

“My name alone shall be my epitaph.” — BYRON

Slightly over a decade has elapsed since Steve Jobs unveiled a new, exciting, and intriguing product, developed by Apple—the first smartphone. We have since been living through a social revolution that has changed the way we communicate with one another, including within our own families.

During working hours, parents and children talk mostly about routine matters like the day’s events or whether they have done their homework, but the emotional component, so critical to a family, is missing.

Today, creating that emotional connection is one of the most important challenges parents face with.

After years of treating children and offering parenting advice, Liat Zelzer is convinced that children will respond happily to emotional communication conveyed by technological means. If done properly, this can go beyond the technical issues of the day and transmit feelings of warmth between family members when they are not in the same physical space.

In her book, Liat presents common situations in family life where parents are at work and wish to provide their children with support, help, or be part of their experiences, while also ensuring their wellbeing remotely. Through real-life examples from parents, Liat shows useful solutions through the use of a smartphone. This book suggests a broad range of ways of creating communication that bring families closer by showing the true potential rather than the downside usually attributed to this technology, in order to promote and aid our family goals.

The 7 Essential Stories Charismatic Leaders Tell

by Kurian Tharakan
Text-to-Speech: Enabled
Here’s the set-up:

How to move people and mountains with the power of story.

Charismatic leaders seem to possess an effortless ability to influence, captivate, charm, and inspire people to action. Whether it is through grace, passion, or unshakable confidence, charismatic people can rouse the sentiments and energies of the people they touch. While not everyone can master charisma, there is one charismatic tool that any leader can learn — the power of storytelling; specifically, how to communicate a strategic narrative. This book will show you how.

______

The book details the story categories all great leaders need to tell, and the cultural framework they need to infuse these stories into. Each chapter has several stories illustrating the chapter topic. Here are three of the author’s favourites:

The World’s Oldest Recorded Customer Complaint Letter – In 1750 BCE, in what is considered the world’s oldest recorded customer complaint letter, Nanni, a merchant from Ur, writes to Ea-nasir, a copper producer in the Persian Gulf, complaining that his order for copper ingots was substandard. The letter, inscribed in cuneiform on a clay tablet, was recovered from an archaeological site and in many ways shows that customer service issues such as rude treatment, contempt, broken promises, and delivery of substandard goods, have been with us for millennia. Read the full letter and you will understand the angst poor Nanni had to endure.

A Letter from a Freedman to His Old Master – In the summer of 1864, Union soldiers freed plantation slave Jordon Anderson and his family, who were then able to make their way north to Dayton, Ohio to start a new life. Imagine Jordon’s surprise when he received a letter from his old slave master asking him to return to the plantation to run its operations. You won’t believe the wit and sarcasm Jordon delivered back in his response to such a ridiculous request.

A Twenty-Three Year Delay – Charles Darwin spent five years on the HMS Beagle as the ship’s naturalist. Upon his return in 1836, Darwin’s mind reeled with what he had witnessed and was already formulating the genesis of two revolutionary ideas: the theory of evolution and a theory for how evolution takes place, that being natural selection. But it wasn’t until 1859, twenty-three years after he returned from his voyage, that Darwin published his theories in the book, On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection, or the Preservation of Favoured Races in the Struggle for Life. Why did he wait so long? You may be surprised by the reason.

Here’s the set-up:

200 years ago, the Brothers Grimm unleashed their stories upon the world. Now the characters of the Grimms’ stories walk among us, cursed by a corrupting black magic. With every day that passes, they grow more evil. More dangerous.

For 18-year-old Alice Goodenough, summer vacation was supposed to mean part-time work at the local library. But when she comes across a mysterious creature and a magic pen, she finds herself suddenly thrust into the role of the Hero. It is now her responsibility to wipe out the Corrupted once and for all. She has no choice in the matter. The Corrupted are everywhere, and only Alice can see them for what they truly are.

This book contains the first 3 episodes of the critically acclaimed series:

Episode 1: Prince Charming Must Die!

Alice Goodenough has been chosen to be the new hero, but not before undergoing a test to see if she’s worthy. Shaken, confused, Alice discovers that her weapon is a magic fountain pen and her ammunition is her mind: whatever she can draw, she can create. With the help of a rabbit friend, Alice must learn the ways of the hero and discover the truth about her frightening dreams: who is the terrible creature feeding on its victims at night?

Episode 2: Happily Never After

Alice’s nightmares have begun to grow more real. Terrifying man-eating rats are plaguing the city of Chicago, and it’s up to Alice to figure out a way to stop them. But before she can do that, she’ll have to face off with an even more dangerous enemy sent to kill her.

An enemy that has killed heroes before …

Episode 3: Revenge of the Castle Cats

After being rushed to the hospital, Alice Goodenough finds herself trapped in the worst dream imaginable: a horrible monster is hunting in the darkness, searching for its next victim: Alice. It will stop at nothing to kill her.

And that’s not the worst of it. All across the city, people are growing more addicted to Castle Cats, a smartphone game created by Grayle Incorporated. And it’s not just a game. The more you play, the more it controls you. Soon, Alice learns that the dwarfs who run Grayle Incorporated are watching her everywhere she goes, using human beings to spy on her.

There must be a confrontation. Sam Grayle and his brothers have to be stopped. And Alice is going to need help.

False Memory (False #1)

by Meli Raine
4.8 stars – 49 reviews
Text-to-Speech: Enabled
Here’s the set-up:

It all started with the bereavement flowers with my name on them.

Not the best way to wake up, right? I work in a flower shop. I know a funeral arrangement when I see one.

I know a killer when I see one, too. And one is standing in my hospital room right now, straight behind the man who saved my life.

I can’t tell anyone the truth, because that’s the fastest way to really die. So I do the next best thing. I “lose” my memory.

I fake my amnesia.

Pretending not to remember a brutal attempted murder has its perks. The killer is backing down, spending less time around me, loosening the noose.

The less I claim to recall, the more my rescuer, Duff, works to help me “remember.” I hate lying to him.

But he doesn’t understand that my memory is dangerous. To me. And to him.

Fooling everyone isn’t easy. It’s the hardest thing I’ve ever done.

Except it’s starting to look like I’ve been fooling myself.

In more ways than one.
