Great romantic suspense”

Here’s the set-up:

Running for the wrong reason can still get you killed.

Kelli Carpenter has changed her name, her appearance—her life—to avoid being connected to a crime she committed in self defense years ago. But just when she thinks she has nothing to fear, handsome stranger Blake Windsor shows up.

He claims to be the handyman her boss sent to help complete the project she’s working on—Camp Getaway—a place where inner city kids will get respite from concrete and drive-bys. Being a loner has kept her alive, and Kelli’s instincts tell her to leave. But without Blake’s help, the refuge for inner city children won’t be completed on time. Against her instincts, she accepts his help.

Blake Windsor is a corporate executive accepted his boss’s request to find out if Kelli Carpenter is really a woman his boss thinks he knew years before. He begrudgingly returns to the blue-collar construction lifestyle he vowed to leave behind, hoping doing this favor will advance his career.

The woman he meets bears little resemblance to the woman he’s supposed to find, but something about her mystifies him, and he decides to continue with his deception to learn more about her.

When someone makes an attempt on Kelli’s life, she runs—but she takes Blake with her. Keep your friends close but your enemies closer is her philosophy. And Kelli is convinced Blake knows something that will link her to her former lover’s death, ending her life as she knows it.

What’s in a Name? is full of twists and turns as Blake and Kelli try to keep one step ahead of whoever is following them—while they try to figure out why.

About the Author

Terry Odell was born in Los Angeles and now makes her home in Divide, Colorado. An avid reader (her parents tell everyone they had to move from their first home because she finished the local library), she always wanted to “fix” stories so the characters did what she wanted, in books, television, and the movies.

With a degree in Psychology from UCLA, and a Biology minor, she loves getting into the minds of her characters, turning them loose in tight spots and seeing what they do. Too often, they surprise her.
Her published works include Finding Sarah, Hidden Fire, What’s in a Name?, Nowhere to Hide, and When Danger Calls. In addition, she has numerous short stories published with the Wild Rose Press as well as some of her own stories (Coping Mechanisms, A Summer’s Eve) available at The Kindle Store. She is an active member of Romance Writers of America, and its Kiss of Death chapter, as well as Mystery Writers of America. When she’s not writing, or watching wildlife from her window, she’s probably reading.

Here’s the set-up:

Fourteen year-old Rita Morse is the kind of girl that the teen-hating Shadow Regime hates. She won’t put up with crap that isn’t fair. Like the ban on teens her own cousin, Jerry, put up at his video game store. After she toilet-papers the place to get back at him, the Regime, an army of immortals working to oppress teens all over the world, adds her to their list of threats.

That’s not good. Turns out that banning kids from stores is the least of their evil.

Because the Regime’s enemies always disappear.

Now Rita’s in the biggest trouble of her life. She’s being stalked by shadow people. Threatened. Even nearly kidnapped. The Regime’s not the only danger: they control countless humans around the world–including her cousin. There’s nowhere to turn.

Rita must learn the Shadow Regime’s reason for their war on teens—and her—or she won’t make it through her first week of high school.

What the Reviewers Say
“Anyone who’s experienced age-discrimination, young or old, can relate to this story. Anyone who had a teacher from hell (who hasn’t?) can relate. And anyone who enjoys a fast, furious read will enjoy Rita Morse’s adventures with the Sinister Shadow–really a whole Shadow Regime that wants to put teenagers out of business. Permanently.”
–Judy Dearborn Nill, author of Simple Twists of Fate

“The story is full of kids pranks, a really mean teacher, school bullies, and bicycle chases, all the ingredients to keep young readers on the edge of their seats right to the end.”
–Trishy

I really appreciate the light, funny, and irreverent tone that Holly has achieved, and one thing’s for sure — it never slows down. I don’t know if Rita and her friends stop moving the entire time!”
–Matthew Posner

Here’s the set-up:

WHAT IF EVIL VISITED THE ONE PLACE WHERE YOU FEEL THE MOST SAFE?

Following the breakup of her marriage, Rachael retreats to the old beachhouse in Jenny’s Cove, where she once lived with her grandmother. It is the one place where she had always felt safe and loved. Devasted and lost, Rachael longs for the simplicity of her childhood.

But Jenny’s Cove has changed. From the moment of Rachael’s arrival, a man watches. He has already killed, and mercilessly will do so again. Soon Rachael becomes a target for a vicious predator whose own dark and twisted past forms a deadly bond between them.

And sets her on a collision course with a crazed killer.

What the Reviewers Say
“Woven with an uncanny magic, CHILL WATERS is rich in sensory imagery and dense with the darkness that lies in the heart of a madman. Hovey creates a rich cast of characters, each uniquely realized and memorable. At age forty-five, heroine Rachael provides a refreshingly mature viewpoint who still manages to grow and change with the flow of the novel. She has raised her children and fled a failed marriage to take control of her life only to confront a madman.”
–Cynthia Penn, MIDWEST REVIEW

Rachael is a magnetically likeable heroine, and Peter Gardner fills his muscular frame well as her sleuthing counterpart concerned about his student. Rachael’s transformation from walking wounded to feisty survivor will leave you cheering.”
–Kristin J. Johnson, author and Vine Voice

“… Joan Hall Hovey has penned as good a thriller as I have ever read…a superb tale of terror and suspense that puts her right up there with the likes of Sandford and Patterson…”

But this is one of those “take a minute to smell the coffee” moments, because today’s sponsor at $2.99 is every bit as much of a bargain as any freebie. But first, a word from … Today’s Sponsor

Editor’s Note: “I don’t go out on a limb like this for one of our sponsors more than two or three times a year, but I hope you will read David Greene’s novel Unmentionables, because it is a terrific, life-affirming read…. “This book is so good it should be on high school and university reading lists. An amazing civil war story told simply and very smoothly.”
–Charles A. Lane

Here’s the set-up:

Unmentionables is about two pairs of lovers in the Civil War south. One couple is straight, white, and wealthy. The other couple is gay, black, and enslaved.

Field hand Jimmy meets Cato, a house servant from a nearby plantation. Jimmy, who despises whites, mistakes Cato for a white man. But soon he learns that Cato is only half white. Cato is the illegitimate son of plantation owner Augustus Askew. With time, Jimmy’s fascination with Cato grows into romantic love.

Unmentionables is also the story of Dorothy Holland, whose parents own Jimmy. Dorothy does not want any man to control her life. When she falls in love with Cato’s half-brother, William Askew, she must persuade him to agree to her terms, and to betray his role as a Confederate army officer.

What the Reviewers Say
“…surpasses the majority of Civil War novels by bringing together two enthralling love stories. Superb historical fiction with a contemporary angle; an enlightening look at the hidden elements of our past.”

–ForeWord Clarion Review

This book was fascinating from beginning to end. It is one of those rare books one never wants to end. The story is one never told before, in a situation everyone can learn from. Part of what makes the book so enjoyable is that the style is very reminiscent of 19th century English novels — Trollope, for example. Highly recommended.

–Constant Reader

Unmentionables by David Greene is set in the American Civil War south and recounts the intertwining stories of two couples, Jimmy and Cato, who are gay, black, and enslaved, and Dorothy and William, who are straight, white, and wealthy. If this time period and subject matter seem a tad too distant to relate to your present 21st century lives, fret not. History in this work is used masterfully to transform the specific into the universal. Unmentionables is about love – romantic and otherwise…

Mr. Greene’s great appreciation of all that is sensual is equaled by his intellectual understanding of relationships that cross established racial, social, sexual, and political boundaries. In a style that is straightforward without being encyclopedic, poetic without being over-embellished, and informative without being didactic, he achieves that balance of form and content required for a successful, and, in this case, beautiful work of art.”

–James Viloria

About the Author

Skinny Thinking grew out of Laura Katleman-Prue’s desire to heal the eating, weight, and body image issues that plagued her for 35 years. She discovered that the root of her problem was the way she thought about food. In fact, changing her diet was irrelevant, if she didn’t change her thinking habits. By teaching herself to go on a “thought diet” and transform her relationship with food, she experienced permanent healing. This healing motivated her to write Skinny Thinking and to lead Skinny Thinking Workshops in order to help others heal their eating issues as well.

Laura attended Pomona College and pursued graduate studies in Marketing at Boston College. In 1980, she founded the Boston Brownie Company Inc. with retail and wholesale distribution in 2,000 stores in 14 states along the eastern seaboard.

In 1992, Laura completed coursework at Lesley University in Counseling Psychology. That same year, she received a Certification in Transpersonal Psychology from the Theravision Institute. A long-time meditator, she has been teaching meditation and self-inquiry for the past four years. She began teaching Skinny Thinking Workshops in 2009.

Inspiring story of a teenage boy devoted to protecting his little sister”

Here’s the set-up:

What would you do if you had one chance to kill the man who raped your twelve-year-old sister?

No Judge. No Jury. No witnesses.

Seventeen-year-old child prodigy Garrett Anthony has to answer that question. As he holds a gun to the head of his sister’s rapist, he flashes back to his traumatic past: five-years-old in a foster home, seven-years-old stealing food to survive, and sixteen-years-old visiting his black father in prison for the first time.
After years of fighting to secure a stable life for him and his half-sister, he finally has a scholarship to a prestigious Washington DC private school and the love of a Virginia senator’s daughter. But this new found and tenuous happiness begins to unravel once he reveals the family secret which is the catalyst to the painful decision he must make. Can he take the life of someone else and continue to live with himself?

What the 5-Star Review Says
The Guardian of Eden by Leslie DuBois is a touching novel about Garrett, a teenage genius, who from an early age takes on the responsiblity of caring for his younger sister Eden, since they share an unstable mother with addiction issues.

“Just when it looks like Garrett’s life is going better than it ever has before, with a new girlfriend by his side, he learns the unthinkable, that his little sister has been abused, a miscarriage telling the tale of misplaced trust and perversion. Garrett leaves the hospital to go after the man responsible, but will he ruin his own life in the process?

“I highly recommend this book. I read it for the first time over a year ago, and the story still haunts me.”
