The Volunteer

Here’s the set-up:

In the fall of 1999, psychologist Sophia Beckman is compelled by the court to give testimony on behalf of a death row inmate that results in his sentence being overturned. Haunted by secrets from her past, she avoids the media spotlight as much as possible, but soon, other prisoners’ families come seeking her assistance. One family in particular, the wife, children, and brother of Jarrett Capshaw, is especially insistent. Forty-one days ago Jarrett’s request to die was granted by the State of Texas, and he became a dead man walking, a man they call a volunteer.

Jarrett’s crimes were unusual, involving the theft of precious Mayan antiquities. Murder was never part of the plan, but murder is what happened. He pulled the trigger, and as little as he feels prepared for it, as much as he struggles with matters of the soul, he’s ready to die. It is the only way his family and the families of his victims will be free to move on. While Jarrett labors to find the words to say good-bye to those he has loved, Sophia finds herself drawn into a relationship with his wife and oldest son. It is Jarrett’s family she can’t resist and there will be a price to pay. But not even Sophia could have foreseen the outcome when the brutal truth is exposed, the unalloyed facts that, incredibly, will deliver Jarrett’s fate straight into her hands.

The Volunteer is a story about families, how they are made, and how in one single, horrifying instant, they can be broken. It is a story about mothers and the lies they tell to protect their children, to keep them from being hurt. But what happens when the truth comes out anyway and nothing and no one is spared? Sometimes the truth has the power to break your heart, and in Sophia’s case it will also endanger her freedom and threaten everything she has ever believed about her life

Reviews

“THE VOLUNTEER is a satisfying read, and that’s enough in itself, but I think book clubs will find a whole additional dimension for discussion. Beyond the big questions that gray the core topic of capital punishment, there’s the complicated realm of family relationships, the definition of “the honorable thing” and whether or not it’s even possible to redeem oneself by living or dying for a private cause. ~ Joni Rodgers, NYT bestselling author of Crazy for Trying, Sugarland and memoir, Bald in the Land of Big Hair

“THE VOLUNTEER is a story of so many things that are not talked about — you can only learn about them by noticing the empty shape that people talk around. It’s exactly like negative space in art, when you depict the object by drawing the space around it.” ~ Darla Tagrin, Artist

Sissel writes “… a plot worthy of Daphne du Maurier …” ~ The Houston Chronicle

Nevada: America’s number one tourist destination… if you’re DEAD!

After surviving the first days of the zombie apocalypse, Sheriff Penny Miller and her friends relax in what’s left of Las Vegas. The Army asks Miller and her party to return to Crystal Place, the Top Secret base that was birthplace of the zombies. Even though the mission is to recover data that may lead to a cure for the virus—and Miller herself—she’s pretty sure it’s a bad idea. The Army assures her that a crack team of mercenaries will be there to protect them every step of the way.

When Miller sees weird religious graffiti scrawled in blood on the concrete walls, she’s sure their chances of survival have just dropped to damn near zero. Again.

Sometimes it sucks being right!

About The Authors
Harry Shannon

Like most authors, I’ve kicked around a lot. I’ve been an actor, a singer, an Emmy-nominated songwriter, a recording artist in Europe, a music publisher, a VP of Carolco Pictures and worked as a free-lance Music Supervisor on films such as ‘Basic Instinct’ and ‘Universal Soldier.’ I’m currently a counselor in private practice. All of my MICK CALLAHAN mystery novels are available on Kindle, and a few will be coming back into print in 2013. Check out my thriller THE PRESSURE OF DARKNESS. I have published dozens of short stories and written a number of screenplays, including the Lionsgate horror movie and novel DEAD AND GONE. My dark thriller CLAN was recently released on Kindle. My comic thriller, a zombie opus entitled THE HUNGRY (co-written with Steven W. Booth) is out now, and so is the sequel, THE HUNGRY 2: THE WRATH OF GOD. There’s also a pulp novella written for an exciting new Kindle/paperback series published by Amazon’s own 47North. My entry is entitled THE DEAD MAN: KILL THEM ALL! For the curious, I’ve twice been nominated for the Stoker Award by the Horror Writer’s Association. I’ve won the Tombstone and the Black Quill once each, and my short story FIFTY MINUTES, co-written with Joe Donnelly, was recently chosen for inclusion in the prestigious anthology Best American Mysteries of 2011. You can find me on Facebook or Twitter.

Steven has earned a BA in Economics (with an emphasis on Business) and a minor in History from the University of California at Santa Cruz. He has gone on to earn an MBA in Nonprofit Management from the University of Judaism in Los Angeles and a Masters of Arts in Teaching from National University. Steven has had many jobs and careers over the last two decades, including but not limited to, telephone installer, pizza chef, customer service and tech support rep, fundraiser, parking attendant, administrative assistant, computer repair technician, archery instructor, alarm system installer, taxi driver, teacher, short video producer, author, editor, and most recently, publisher. Just about the only thing he hasn’t been (according to his sister’s reckoning) is a bartender, a bouncer, and a Peace Corps volunteer, though those are certainly not out of the question.

Not much of a reader as a child, Steven discovered Peirs Anthony, David Gerrold, and Patrick O’Brian in his mid-teens and has been an avid reader ever since. Apart from the above-named authors, he has read nearly everything by authors Steven Brust, Steven Saylor, Isaac Asimov, Peter S. Beagle, and Roger Zelazny, among others. He considers Anna Karenin to be the greatest novel ever written.

Steven earned his pilot’s license at age 17, despite getting lost a few days before Christmas in a Cessna 152 and ending up spending a night at Big Bear Lake in the mountains of Southern California. He is still amazed that his mother ever let him fly again. At UC Santa Cruz, he encountered the Society for Creative Anachronism and quickly rose to the rank of Seneschal, mainly because he was the only one foolish enough to take on the thankless position. He holds the title of Lord and the rank of Master Archer. It was his experience with the SCA that made him choose to earn an MBA in Nonprofit Management. The best thing that came from his time in Los Angeles was meeting his beautiful wife, Leya.

Steven spent five years teaching computers, math, and science in private schools in the San Fernando Valley area of Los Angeles. He is a serious Star Wars and Star Trek fan, and will gladly demonstrate his geekiness upon request. Steven lives in Encino with his wife and far too many cats.

About The Author

It was the 1960s. The place was Hudson County, New Jersey…a tunnel ride away from midtown Manhattan. Jon was first published at 10. A story he’d written about the Civil War was transformed into a mimeographed book and distributed throughout the county school system. He went on to write for the school newspaper. Also at that time the pre-teenager began studying the guitar, leading him to hone his love and knowledge of music…and the art of composing.

In a logical progression, he graduated school, played in club bands, opened for touring acts and by his mid 20s was traveling cross-country as a session musician.

While touring during the 1970s, Jon was also a feature writer for New Jersey’s 3rd largest newspaper, The Herald News, simultaneously allowing him to enjoy the best of his favorite worlds; Playing rock & roll…and writing.

In 1985, Jon found a different side of life. He said, “Goodbye and it’s been a slice!” to the music business and got a job in the corporate world.

By 1999, another change was about to take place. For more than two decades Jon knew that within him there was the desire and ability to write…it’s just that New Jersey wasn’t the place to do it.

So he drove to Los Angeles…and stayed.

He started writing as soon as he arrived…and didn’t stop until the manuscript and screenplay for “The Boss Always Sits In The Back” were completed.

Though he claims he’s not an actor, Jon has appeared in several independent shorts and feature films, and co-starred in the play “Two Nowhere Men” at the 2002 Can Festival (yeah, that’s right. The “Can” Festival).

Along with “The Boss Always Sits In The Back,” he’s written the screenplays “Mad Avenue” and “The Delivery Man,” the stage play “For What It’s Worth” (to stellar reviews at the award winning 2001 Can Festival), co-wrote the feature scripts “Rubdown” with Laura Fuino, “Deadfellas” with Steve Barr, and “2022” with Brian Evers, and the short, “Women Are Pigs” (titled by the co-writer, Kelli Crawford).

Jon’s writing has received rousingly enthusiastic industry response, and he is currently waiting for the check that’s supposedly in the mail.

Jon continues to reside in California…and writes all the time.

BLOOD MONEY is a classic examination of the duality of the American justice system, it’s strengths and weaknesses, and the interplay between it and raw ambition.

BLOOD MONEY is a disturbing depiction of a system gone wrong, and the one time golden boy who is finally able to understand the bigger picture and remember the oath taken and his dream that was once so clear.

Reviews

“Laura Rizio’s BLOOD MONEY is an amazing legal thriller! Her writing is sharp, realistic, and the story is absolutely compelling, one that leaves you thinking about the U.S. legal system long after you’ve had the pleasure of reading. ” ~ The Kindle Book Review

“In her exciting debut, personal injury attorney, Rizio, crafts a legal thriller with compelling characters and tense action that more than compensate for a familiar premise. An appealing tart cynicism haunts the novel’s scenes. For a debut, Rizio’s novel is remarkably accomplished. An entertaining thriller full of clever touches, whose characters and tone enliven an overworked genre.” ~ Rebecca Cramer Kirkus Indie–Kirkus LLC

“I must recommend to you Blood Money (an apt title), an excellent book, a real thriller. I just finished the book. Actually I just started it, and then finished it in record time because I could not put it down.” ~ Rick Pickwick, 5-Stars

Joseph Storm resides in the great state of Florida, frequently traveling the American countryside from its cities to its back roads.  Part of his inspiration to write comes from his love of country, absorbing its beauty and its flaws, learning from its strengths and its weaknesses.

His other inspiration is history, finding rich lessons of life upon its every rise and fall.  He finds wisdom in tracing the roadmap of the future, by looking into  moments of the past.

It’s the combination of those two passions which fuel his novels.  He strives to entertain and inform, though his main goal is to tell a good story, removing the reader from their zones of comfort.  What if the impossible happens?  What if everything we always took for granted, crumbled apart?  Would we fight for our lives when it is much easier to die?  Questions like that allow us to experience such drama, safe from the comforts of a text-filled page, and not from the horrors of living them.  It allows us to learn from those stories in a book, rather than join the many who have faced them in real life.

His ultimate goal is to preserve imagination and creativity in writing, as it is under attack in today’s world. There is such a desire for every book to be bland and painfully realistic, we are losing touch with our ability to use our minds. Therefore, in every work he produces, Storm aims to fight the critical pressure to conform, and keep imagining.
