Loved it, from beginning to end.”

“A book to remember.”

Here’s the set-up…

Ariana’s Pride is an historical romance set during the Wars of the Roses. The story commences shortly after the Battle of Barnet where Warwick The Kingmaker was killed and Edward IV has just taken his throne back from the mad king, Henry VI. This one decisive battle affected the lives and attitudes of Ariana and Jeremy.

Ariana Devoe is the willful and arrogant daughter of Earl William. What happens when she finds that she has lost her home and family? Will she lose her heart, too, as she struggles to reach the elderly Baron to whom her father has promised her? Or will she throw away her chance to avenge her father’s death and regain her titles and estates to be with the dashing Jeremy?

Jeremy Gowen has lived most of his life in the Earl’s stables, but does not intend to end his days there. Aided by the stablemaster, once a soldier in the King’s service, Jeremy secretly learns horsemanship and sword fighting.

After the attack on her father’s castle, Jeremy finds Lady Ariana, lost and alone. He promises to take her to the Baron, but as their journey progresses, he is no longer willing to turn the woman he loves over to another man. Jeremy holds the secret which could make Ariana his, but he wants her to love him for his own sake.

What the Reviewers Say
I enjoyed this book very much. And I am not a reader of Romance novels. I don’t think this book is. It is a historical novel with a romance in it. The characterizations are excellent. Ms. Lake presents the main two characters and they are less than 100% likable. However as they overcome hardships and meet new challenges in a very short period of time, they grow-up. And they become much more likable to each other as well as to the reader. I give this book 5 stars because is is so good for a first book. And I look forward to more from this author and will purchase subsequent offerings.

I Loved this book .It is a wonderful Historical novel with Romance and a little Mystery. A well written first novel. I look forward to the next book by Margaret Lake.
–Anne M. Dixon

I love reading Historical Romance, so I figured this would be right up my alley. It delivered and then some.

I started reading and was immediately drawn in by the characters and the surroundings. It was very easy to care for Ariana and Jeremy, but was also surprised in a nice way how much I liked the other characters met on this wonderful adventure by the two… Once I started the book, I couldn’t put it down. It is very engaging and a great road adventure.

I loved the Historical details that brought the story to life, but weren’t to much to bog down the flow. This was a highly entertaining read from beginning to end. I can’t wait to read the next one.

I just finished reading Ariana’s Pride by Margaret Lake. I purchased the book after reading the author’s short story “Of Love and War.” I was astonished at the character development the writer achieved in the short story; therefore, I just had to see what she could do with a full-length novel. I was not disappointed.

I chose Ariana’s Pride because of the interesting action adventure storyline. I must say that at the outset, neither Lady Ariana Devoe nor Jeremy were likable characters. Both seemed to possess character flaws that tended to cause me to dislike them. However, as the plotline unfolds, the pair comes to recognize their weaknesses and strive to overcome them. By the end of the book, they had redeemed themselves most admirably.

The author has a wonderfully descriptive narrative, which allowed me to easily visualize the various scenes depicted in the book.

The romance aspects of the novel are better than most romance books I’ve read, though admittedly they are not great in number. I don’t normally read romance novels, but this author of historical romances skillfully merges action adventure and romance. I’ve said it before, but I’ll say it again in this review. Margaret Lake’s style reminds me of Baroness Emmuska Orczy’s The Scarlet Pimpernel that I read as a young man. Like that classic historical romance, Margaret Lake’s “Ariana’s Pride” is a magnificent achievement.

Like Orczy before her, Lake has the ability to draw in crossover readers who prefer adventure books. There’s nothing wrong with that. To the contrary, any writer who can get a reader to expand their reading preferences serves the readers well. You action adventure fans should try this book. Romance fans, there’s plenty to admire here. The historical backdrop was fascinating.

I highly recommend this book. Indeed, it has caused me to rethink my preferred genres. I’ll definitely be reading other books by this author in the future.

I hope to see more of Ms Lake’s work. This book is a page turner in the best sense. It is well researched and written. No time wasted in reading this. Of course it is also set in my favorite period of English history; The War of the Roses.

About the Author
I was born in New Jersey (practically lived on the beach), but moved to Florida when I was 13. Reading has always been my favorite activity, even as a child. I’ve been downsizing and have probably donated 5,000 books in the past several years. I still have seven book cases crammed full and I can’t even count how many on my Kindle.
My other passion is history, especially English History. I think my interest really began when I read “Catherine” by Anya Seton. When the inspiration came to write my first book, I naturally gravitated to the Wars of the Roses because of that book.

My favorite author is Susan Howatch, my favorite book is “Outlander” and my favorite series is Harry Potter. I lead a Harry Potter book club at the elementary school.
I’m still waiting for the rescue kitty lady to find me a kitty I can rescue.

And that’s not all. Besides Ariana’s Pride, Margaret Lake has written four other popular Kindle books:
