Catherine West is fleeing from her abusive stepfather Hershel West, and she decides she will tow her ten-year-old stepbrother Guss along.

Her only hope: Jeremiah Bealls, a ranch hand who has been writing to her through a mail order bride catalogue.

When Catherine shows up on Jeremiah’s doorstep unexpectedly, with her little brother in tow, both their worlds are sent spinning.

Jeremiah falls in love with the strong-willed, stoic Catherine almost instantly. But Catherine is more hesitant to let him into her heart. An abusive past and the fear that her stepfather may yet be looking for them, keeps Catherine in a constant state of fear.

Just as Catherine begins to open up to her new husband, a horrible secret is revealed: Jeremiah’s past is full of alcohol and wild, drunken nights.

Fearing that Jeremiah will once again start to drink, Catherine must decide whether she can trust the man she has begun to fall for, or whether she and Guss must spend their lives running from one violent man after another.

And when Hershel tracks Catherine down and wants his son back, Jeremiah is the only person standing in his way.
