Ordinary Parents Raising Extraordinary Children: A Parental Guide to Unlocking Your Child’s Inner Strength to Full Self-Expression (Book 1 of 2)

by Lucie LeBlanc
5.0 stars – 6 reviews
Text-to-Speech: Enabled
Here’s the set-up:
We are on a quest in life and if we must achieve success then, we have to first, know who we are and what we want in life. The journey to ultimate success in life is never an easy one. There are often difficulties and challenges, which are sometimes, insurmountable. Life does not require the most intelligent brains or the smartest minds to succeed but requires the determination to keep going in spite of the aches and the courage to overcome fears, doubts, and those challenges as well. It requires positive thinking. And once you discover who you are, our gifts and talents, and what you want in life, you will almost certainly achieve success. As a parent of young children, there are two things that you must understand: When a child is born, the subconscious mind is wide open. So, everything the child hears, sees, tastes, smells, and touches are planted in their subconscious mind. This goes on for four to five years until the conscious faculties have time to develop. Whatever has been presented to the child’s mind will eventually develop since the subconscious mind must accept everything that is presented to it; it has no ability to reject. It is the most important stage in life as it is during this time that the child is being conditioned. The child’s conditioning regarding the his or her confidence, learning ability, relationship building, and concept of health and wealth will determine the child’s future. Our children are our future. The future of our country and the world in general rests on their shoulders.

Resilience: It’s Not About Bouncing Back: How Leaders and Organizations Can Build Resilience Before Disruption Hits

by Jennifer Eggers
5.0 stars – 6 reviews
Text-to-Speech: Enabled
Here’s the set-up:
The power of resilience within organizations and can transform an average company into a powerhouse. Yet, even in times of rapid disruptive change, there is no manual for building resilient organizations. This book is that manual.Resilience, left to individuals, will only ever be built by people in the moments that require them to dig deep and find it. The real power in building resilience before we need it, lies in what we can accomplish when our organizations become resilient. This book presents a simple framework for leaders and organizations to prepare for sustainable results in the face of rapid, disruption. The power for organizations lies in the act of methodically and collaboratively building a collective resilience framework to increase their ability to thrive in the face of complex challenges for which the answer, and often even the definition of the problem itself, may not be obvious. These challenges frequently require both the organization and the leaders within them to make trade-offs in values and loyalties. Often, an individual’s resilience will ‘get them through’ such changes, but a more effective approach is to build organizational resilience before we need it.

But now, stranded on another planet, it turns out Aster’s not quite as human as he, and everyone around him, believed. On the planets within the Maylin Fold, Aster’s ancestors have a long history of magical dealings, and he’s the last in the line who can solve the riddle of where the famous sorcerer, Almara, disappeared to two hundred years ago.

But Cadoc, the raving commander who has long sought to stamp out all knowledge of Almara, has caught wind of Aster’s plans. He joins the hunt, only it’s Aster he seeks. If he can’t sway the boy to unite with him, then his head on a spike will have to do.

Aster needs to get back to Earth, NOW.

Unfortunately, Cadoc seems to be the only Mayliner with the power to send him home. Without the tyrant’s help, any chance of seeing the fractured remains of his family again will evaporate, and he could be trapped in Maylin forever.

David & Avshalom: Life and Death in the Forest of Angels

by Bernard Mann
4.5 stars – 13 reviews
Text-to-Speech and Lending: Enabled
Here’s the set-up:
This telling of the life and times of David the king goes well beyond the typical story line, into the exploration of little known story arcs — the adoption by David of the Hittites’ compound bow and large archer companies enabled Israel to throw off Philistine domination. His friendship with Hiram of Tyre and other rulers led to never-broken peace and successful maritime engagements with the Phoenicians. His willingness to help defend Canaanite Taanach signaled peace with Canaanites and his marriage with Maacah allowed peace with Geshur, other peoples of the north. Even more striking was his respect for women writers, including Judith, who wrote much of the books of Genesis and Exodus (See Bloom’s the Book of J), and Seraiah (my name for this author), who wrote the Book of Ruth. The roles of Bathsheba in Palace affairs and Maacah in her tragic sorrow over son Avshalom’s (Absalom’s) rebellion are illuminating. All in all, this saga is one of high drama and warm insights into personal and national life in ancient Israel.

Here’s the set-up:

After failing to locate the celebrated sorcerer Almara, Aster Wood has done the next best thing; he has found, and rescued, Almara’s daughter, Jade. Now, the two are traveling through the Maylin Fold together, still searching for the lost wizard. He is the one man who can answer their questions about why the planets within the Fold are dying, what it means for Earth, and how the evil can be stopped.

But when they finally do find Almara, he’s in no state to be of any help to anyone. They must push on with him in tow and hope to find the little known Book of Leveling, an ancient tome said to hold the key to balancing the planets in the Fold. Little by little, tiny fragments of information leak from Almara’s fractured mind, and they draw closer and closer to their goal. Aster hopes that the discovery of the book will lead to not just the healing of worlds, but the healing of the people who inhabit them. Including the one person Aster has barely dared think of for the past eight years, his long-mad father.

But a new enemy is waiting for them, watching every step that they take. The Corentin, a force of evil so great that few dare to pass along their knowledge of him, is examining their every move, playing with them like puppets on strings.

And Jade. Aster thought he had saved her for good, that the release from her mountain prison would be enough to bring her back from the misery she had experienced for so many years. But her happiness is fading, and in her eyes Aster sees flashes of a malice so deep that it chills him to his core.

Aster must make it to the book and wrench it from the clutches of the Corentin before it’s too late. Before his friend, and her old, mad father, are lost to his strange hold over them. And before he, himself, falls to the dark bed of madness the Corentin has waiting.

The Book of Leveling is the second book of five in the teen fantasy series Aster Wood, perfect for lovers of middle grade science fiction. These teen adventure books are a wild ride through the cosmos!

Reviews

“A really well-written fantasy series with a great main character in the form of Aster Wood. The book is based on a very original scheme of time and space travel to different dimensions and planets, with a little wizardry and magic thrown in.”

“Aster is a great new hero, and the story is an exciting fantasy story, where a young man discovers his history and is thrust on a path not of his choosing.”

“The world of Aster Wood is full of adventure and it’s unique; it’s unlike other fantasy stories I’ve read. I highly recommend it.”

Here's the set-up:
Broken. That's what the world is now. The Long Drought is over, but the rain that falls burns like acid on the flesh.

Twelve-year-old Aster Wood is weak compared to the other survivors who flock to the cities, the only places where a meal and fresh water can be had.

But when he finds a ragged piece of parchment in the hidden corners of his father's childhood home, he is pulled through the cosmos to a place no one on Earth knows exists.

Here, the grass grows green. The wolves glow like the full moon. The wizards play with ancient knowledge, delighted with the simple spells that can bring dying plants back to life and make invisible that which they do not want seen.

And Aster is healthy again.

The heart condition that has plagued him since he was a toddler is suddenly absent, and Aster finds himself running, no, flying across the countryside as if he were born to do it.

Now, he must chase down the long-lost sorcerer, Almara, to discover the truth about his own family's past. And to learn what is yet to come for Earth's future.

Aster Wood and the Lost Maps of Almara is the first book of five in the action-packed Aster Wood series, perfect for teen adventure readers. Discover Aster Wood, the new series of middle grade fantasy books for middle school and young adult readers alike.
One Reviewer Notes:
What I liked about the book... I can’t possibly list all the things I liked about the book. Wonderful imagination coupled with great writing makes this middle grade novel a real gem. Aster is a likeable character that you quickly grow fond of. Kiron is complicated, moody, sometimes dark and sometimes funny. The story progresses at a fast pace, introducing new characters and events with ease and skill.

One Reviewer Notes:
My teenage son and I both really enjoyed this first book in the Aster Wood series. Aster is a great new hero, and the story is an exciting fantasy story, where a young man discovers his history and is thrust on a path not of his choosing. Watching him come to grips with the existence of other worlds and the importance of what he is being asked to do adds richness to a story that is already well-plotted and filled with twists and turns. Loved it! Can't wait to read the next installment.
