Fourteen years later, Lizzy is a licensed PI known as the “one who got away.” When she’s not searching for runaway teenagers, working on insurance scams, or talking to her therapist, she’s at the local high school teaching young girls to defend themselves.

But her world is turned upside down for the second time after she receives a call from Jared Shayne. He’s an FBI special agent now and he needs her help. Lizzy has no plans to get involved. Not until Jared tells her the kidnapper left her a personalized note.

From the reviewers:

CREEPY but great thriller.  The story keeps you guessing and on the edge of your seat the entire time. Totally engrossing and a terrific read.  –  Ann

Chilling tale with great characters.  A great heroine – strong, haunted, flawed, determined, with a horrible event in her past. And a villain who was very, very well done. I shut my windows while reading the book and checked all doors and windows after as well…  — Reader Girl

Compared to a lot of the “bestsellers” on the market, this book is above many of them! Riveting story line and keeps you on the edge until the final chapter. – Joyce

If I could give this 10 stars I would! This is the BEST Who-Done-It Thriller I have read in a very long time.  –  Valerie L.

I have been writing plays and short stories for many years, some of which were published in various college literary magazines. More recently, my short story “The Recollections of Rosabelle Raines,” was published in the mystery anthology Chesapeake Crimes: They Had it Comin’ available at Amazon.com.

My first novel, TAKE THE MONKEYS AND RUN, is a comedy-mystery, inspired, to some degree by a true monkey sighting in my own neighborhood. Because I love to laugh as well as make other people laugh, I have great fun writing the characters Barbara Marr, her friends and her adversaries. When I set out to write this book, I knew I wanted to write something that readers would say, “Now that was FUN.” I HOPE I have achieved that goal. And if I did, please feel free to drop me a line at and let me know! I love to hear from readers. (especially if they LIKE the book!)

FOXY’S TALE was co-written with my friend LB Gschwandtner. This is the first in a planned chick-lit series. And yes, I’m working on a second Barbara Marr novel, CITIZEN INSANE. You can find out more about these upcoming books at my website, www.KarenCantwell.com.

Her first visit to Paris, where she goes as a translator of a rich but ill-mannered Russian businessman, turns into something totally unexpected. After a strange incident at a small restaurant, Janna is kidnapped – and this is just the beginning of an adventure she couldn’t have ever imagined.

As the story unfolds, Janna finds herself working for Technotics, a huge international corporation with an advanced security system owned by the mysterious Mr. Kumidi. Side Effect is approximately 59,000 words.

From the reviewers:

Awesome Must-Read!  This book is chock full of adventure, the reader will never be bored with this story. Janna is a very exciting character who the reader will be rooting for throughout the entire book. Science fiction lovers will adore this book; readers who don’t normally choose this genre might like this book, the “science” words are well defined and not too hard to understand.   The plot is intricately developed, the environment Janna finds herself in is easy to picture.  This novel is great for young adults/adults who enjoy science fiction and even those who want to give the genre a try.  –  Chels

A solid read!  A mysterious and clearly not all legal corporation launches a new “series,” as they call it, after unsuccessful attempts to infiltrate their human-like robots into society. The robots are getting discovered because of their lack of emotion; “Technotics” hopes to remedy that with the help of genetic engineering.  –  Happy Reader

Kindle Nation 3-for-1 Bargain Book Alert: Kathryn Shay’s SERENITY HOUSE TRILOGY is our eBook of the Day at just $6.99 for All Three Novels, and Here’s a Free Sample!

Here’s the set-up for Kathryn Shay’s Serenity House  Trilolgy just $6.99 for all three novels:

Welcome to SERENITY HOUSE, a trilogy of stories about women who spent some of their adolescent years in a group home for troubled girls.

Each story explores what effects their dysfunctional backgrounds had on them. As you might guess, trust—not being able to trust—is a big issue for all three. But with the help of those who love them, each woman overcomes her difficult beginnings and becomes the person she was meant to be.

In Practice Makes Perfect, Paige Kendrick is a successful doctor who keeps people at a distance and refuses a relationship with hunky doctor Ian Chandler. But Ian won’t stop until he gets what he wants—Paige! And because of his assertiveness, he almost destroys their chances of a life together.

In A Place to Belong, Darcy O’Malley and Hunter Sloan have more in common than they know when they meet at her daycare. Both have troubled kids, both grew up as outcasts in their hometown, and both find a deep and driving passion for the other that cannot be denied. When she was eighteen, troubled Anabelle Crane fell in love with Nathan Hyde, the town’s fair-haired boy. He broke her heart and she left town to become an undercover cop.

In Against the Odds, she’s back to guard him from a stalker. But some things haven’t changed and Anabelle and Nathan find that the passion they have for each other has not died!

From the reviewers:

“For readers like myself who have been a bit disappointed with the quality of the genre of late, Shay’s latest might as well have antidote stamped right next to the “Serenity House” logo. The second and third doses can’t come fast enough.” The Romance Reader

“Fans will enjoy the return of the Serenity House residents, and can only hope for a second-generation series one day!” Word Weaving

Welcome to Kathryn Shay’s first book in her “Serenity House” trilogy. This novel features complex characters, heart-wrenching emotion, and no easy answers.

Dr. Paige Kendrick is a successful pediatrician with a troubled past. As a pregnant teenager, Paige was one of the first residents of Serenity House, a group home for girls. When her drug-addicted parents were killed in a motorcycle accident, and seeing no alternative, Paige gives her child up for adoption. Upon her 18th birthday, Paige gets down to business raising her younger sister, and throwing herself into her chosen profession. While she now has a strained relationship with Jade, all the work has paid off – Dr. Kendrick has a thriving practice working with an upscale clientele.

Dr. Ian Chandler is an OB/GYN who is starting up an inner city clinic to be named after his late adoptive mother. There’s only one piece of the puzzle missing – a pediatrician. Naturally, Ian wants the best, and that which means Dr. Kendrick. After much convincing, she finally agrees – but not before Ian finds himself hopelessly intrigued. What makes Ms. Coldly Professional tick? And why won’t she let him in?

Fifteen years ago, Darcy’s mother left her at Serenity House, a home for wayward girls. A promise of two months turned into four, and eventually seven. Despite the painful experience, Darcy maintained her free spirited lifestyle through boyfriends, marriage, two children, and divorce.

Author Kathryn Shay boldly tackles difficult life challenges in A Place to Belong. Both Darcy and Hunter have struggled with failed marriages and bad reputations. Both struggle with self-images in ways that will endear them to readers. They also both love their children, who are sparkling additions to the tale. The greatest strength of the novel lies in Hunter’s challenge with his son’s ADHD and his realization about his specific events in his own past. A Place to Belong comes highly recommended.

Fifteen years ago, the Crane brothers assault and plan to rape their stepsister Annabelle. Fortunately, the timely intervention of police officer Dan Whitman sends Annabelle to the safety of Serenity House, a home for troubled girls.

A few years later, she accepts a nanny position with Nathan Hyde’s family. She and Nathan have an affair that ends tragically. Now, after five years as an undercover cop in Seattle, Annabelle returns home to recover from a bullet wound.

Nathan’s political career as a congressman has made him the target of a stalker. Subtle clues indicate the perpetrator is someone close to him.

He refuses the usual bodyguard, and only Dan’s interference persuades him to accept Annabelle as an undercover bodyguard. Annabelle plays the role of Nathan’s personal assistant, but the success of her assignment may depend upon how well they can control their feelings from the past.

Kindle Nation Daily Bargain Book Alert: Terry Persun’s CATHEDRAL OF DREAMS is our eBook of the Day at just 99 Cents, with 4.9 Stars on 8 Reviews, and Here’s a Free Sample!

Here’s the set-up for Terry Persun’s The Cathedral of Dreams, just 99 cents on Kindle:

In Newcity, everyone is content. Bad feelings are not allowed, because your monitoring chip will alert the police to bring you in for treatment. Getting better is mandatory. Unchecked emotions made the world outside Newcity dangerous, unruly, and violent. At least that’s the official story in Newcity.

Keith knows something is wrong. Strange visions lead him to become one of the few who escapes Newcity. He finds freedom and companionship outside, but pressure building to revolt against the city’s insidious regime of social control. Leadership is thrust upon him, with only his visions for guidance, only a small band of friends for support—and the fates of both Newcity and the outside world at stake.

Cathedral of Dreams is a compelling tale of a dystopian future and personal heroism.

From the reviewers:

If you have ever seen the movie Equilibrium, you will understand the type of society vividly depicted by Persun. It is one where emotions are seen as dangerous and harmful, and where people are trying to figure out a way to remove emotions from humanity.  –  Miss Allegre

I loved this book. It’s exciting from the first page and it keeps you guessing the entire time. Navigating his life in Newcity as well as outside, Keith is led by two strange visions that help him on his quest. With just a twinge of 1984 mixed with lots of action, I thought this book was great!  –  Phil’s List

In the tradition of other utopian/dystopian novels, Persun takes the reader on a wild ride from the limited but adequate existence inside Newcity to the outside world, and then back to Newcity.  –  Kim Wiebusch

Kindle Nation Daily Bargain Book Alert: Mike Lewis’ CHANGERS’ SUMMER is our eBook of the Day at just $2.99 with 4.0 Stars on 16 Reviews, and Here’s a Free Sample!

Here’s the set-up for Mike Lewis’ Changers’ Summer, just $2.99 on Kindle:

One hundred years ago, a group of mysterious scientists took charge of the Earth’s weather in order to control climate change. Their experiments damaged the planet and in the ensuing chaos they disappeared.

Tom is a twelve year old boy living on a farming commune in a world of constant cloud and acid rain. When one of the “Changers” appears in the grain barn out of thin air, Tom is forced into an adventure along with his voice-enhanced dog Bess, a traveling entertainer named Alison and two of the Changers.

The Changers are back, but are they everything they seem?  Tom and Alison have to decide between family and friends, and helping the Changers repair their world.

Changers’ Summer is a Young Adult/Children’s dystopian science fiction novel about the consequences of science.

From the reviewers:

It is books like these that support my belief that in the realms of self publishing you will find stories that are just as good, if not better, than the fancy, hyped books you’ll find on the shelves of your local bookshop.   In Changers’ Summer, Mike Lewis has created an intriguing post-apocalyptic world that merely hints at what went on to bring it to this point: rats that can build ladders, dogs that can talk, rain that falls in different colours.  This is definitely a book for those who love post-apocalyptic/dystopian reads with a dollop of time travel, plenty of mystery and an accessible sci-fi edge  –  Lyrical Brown

I’m a 5th grade teacher and love reading children’s literature, so that I can keep up with the stories my students would enjoy.  I do think for my level students (10 & 11 year olds) that the book would be a bit over their heads…..But, for a 6th or 7th grader, I think they would really enjoy it.   I really enjoyed this book and feel young adults will also be wanting to read the 2nd book in this trilogy when it becomes available.  –  S. Minow

Lin Pardey’s BULL CANYON is our eBook of the Day – $9.99 with 4.9 Stars on 15 Reviews, and Here’s a Free Sample!

Here’s the set-up for Lin Pardey’s Bull Canyon, JUST $9.99 on Kindle:

Lin Pardey and her husband Larry are internationally famous for their sailing adventures. But In 1980 — fresh from an eleven years-long sailing journey, where they forged the early years of their marriage on high seas and in exotic locales — they came to California looking for a good spot to build a boat, test Lin’s skills as a writer and taste the apparent security life ashore could offer.

Nestled in a rocky outcropping of winding, sparsely populated dirt roads, 60 miles from the sea and 50 miles from Los Angeles, Bull Canyon would seem an unlikely place for boat-building. But when Lin and Larry set eyes on the abandoned stone cottage at the top of a rutted, dusty lane, it was love at first sight. The house was certainly a fixer-upper, but there was plenty of room  to build a boat, not to mention peace, quiet, and an abundance of natural beauty. They knew they’d come home.

Bull Canyon would bring them joy, victories and failures – but also packrats in the pantries, flooding rains that would make Noah himself cower, the occasional cougar, and an oddball collection of neighbors as ready to assist these hapless appearing newcomers as they were to gossip or occasionally cause trouble. It would be a life lived close to the land, coaxing vegetables out of acrid soil, living side-by-side with wildlife of all types, navigating dangerous roads to simply get to the nearest grocery store, no piped in water, no electricity, no phones – not even a proper address to receive mail. Their marriage would be tested, too, working side-by-side, 24/7. Life in the canyon would prove daunting, gritty, and dangerous, and a tougher bargain in the end than what they’d signed up for.

But as tough as life could be there, Bull Canyon was, indeed, the place where dreams could come true. It was here that Lin and Larry tapped into the affirming core of their marriage, accomplished back-breaking physical feats (moving enormous boulders and pouring tons of hot lead, among others), and grew to love the magical yet difficult environment.

In the tradition of “Under the Tuscan Sun” and “A Year in Provence”, Pardey takes readers on a voyage – landlocked, but a voyage nonetheless – of the heart, sharing candidly and with great humor the four years she and her determined husband spent in Bull Canyon. From the Thanksgiving when they had to hang the turkey from a ceiling hook to keep it safe from invading animals, to their constant companion, Dog (who is actually a cat), to Lin’s run-in with a couple of drunk hunters, to Larry’s careful coaxing of rough-sawn timber into the beautiful boat, Taleisin, their story, related in the warm, personal voice of the fireside storyteller, is a funny, tender, and engrossing tale. “Bull Canyon” is the tale story of two “dreamers and schemers” who have taken life by the horns – and bring the reader along for the wild and joyous ride.

A wealth of information on the Pardeys and the most unusual path they have taken in life can be found on Lin Pardey’s author’s page.  If you’ve ever fantasized about chucking it all and following a dream, read about a couple who did just that. —  BookGorilla Editor
