Here’s the set-up:
Cinder Torley is an intelligent young woman who yearns to escape the stifling yoke imposed by her small town upbringing and unhappy marriage, but that doesn’t mean she killed her husband. When he goes missing one night, Cinder quickly learns who—and how few—her friends really are in this darkly comic tale of dueling schemers and incompetents. The sheriff thinks this might be his only ticket out of back-country law enforcement. Coffee house barista Clark Norris knows a sordid, true-crime story could jumpstart his stalled writing career. Glamorous correspondent Bailey Weems sees a ratings bonanza that can make her a cable news star. And as for Velma and Naomi, who may or may not be part of the notorious Manitoba Six Canadian crime ring, they’re only in it for the black market Phen-Fen. The surprising truth about what happened to Cinder’s husband will lay waste to all these agendas, but will it prove Cinder’s innocence?

Kindle Nation Bargain Book Alert: The Engaging Fiction of Christopher Meeks, Starting at Just 99 Cents Each!

While literary is a broad genre, Christopher Meeks has created his own niche, one that mixes humor and literary depth. Amazon Top-Ten reviewer Grady Harp says Meeks is a “master craftsman.” Meeks’s two novels are now just 99 cents. Try the following:
Just published, Love At Absolute Zero is about a physicist, 32-year-old Gunnar Gunderson, who tries to apply the tools of science to finding a soul mate—in three days. Chaos occurs. Red Adept Reviews says, “The author hit a home run. It’s a very good story, very well told.”

“It is impossible not to like Gunnar Gunderson,” says Sam Sattler of Book Chase. “As he progresses from one disaster or near miss to the next, one views him with a mixture of compassion and laughter, but he is such a good-hearted young man that it is impossible not to root for him.”
Also 99 cents, The Brightest Moon of the Century  follows Edward, a young Minnesotan, who is blessed with an abundance of “experience”—first when his mother dies and next when his father, an encyclopedia salesman, shoehorns Edward into a private boys school where he’s tortured and groomed.

Marc Schuster of Small Press Reviews said, “Meeks has come out with a stunning debut novel, and I have to say that I’ve gone from being an admirer of his work to a full-blown fan—bordering on, perhaps, groupie.”

Cherie Parker in the Minneapolis Star-Tribune says, “Minnesota native Christopher Meeks chronicles one man’s path to middle age and, in doing so, illustrates how choices and circumstances … have a way of irrevocably cementing a person’s future.”

SHORT STORY COLLECTIONS AND PLAY
Short fiction is where Meeks first appeared on the literary radar. Critic Grady Harp, who has reviewed all five of Meeks’ books in depth, cites that what Meeks does is that he has “the technical virtuosity of creating characters in a minimum of space and then unfold those characters in response to the movement of the landscape.” He says, “He is likely to continue on his climb to one of America’s more important writers this decade.” Try these:
The Middle-Aged Man and the Sea [ASIN: B002K2RI1A] is a story collection about love, death, humor, and the glue called family. “So stunning…that I could not help but move on to the next story,” said Entertainment Weekly.
Months and Seasons [ASIN: B002K2RRQ6] was a finalist in the Frank O’Connor International Short Story Award for best collection. “With this collection, Christopher Meeks proves there is an audience for short stories,” said Gary Roen of the Midwest Book Review.
Who Lives?: A Drama [ASIN: B0030IM61A] has been produced twice in Los Angeles, and its last production was nominated for five prestigious Ovation Awards. The play chronicles the tough choices of who gets to live after the kidney dialysis machine was brought out in the sixties. Los Angeles Times theatre critic David C. Nichols said, “Those who have personal experience with its topic should perhaps bring Kleenex.”

Here's the set-up:
Deadly secrets have been buried in the Cascade mountain wilderness for centuries. Hidden. Out of sight and out of mind. Until today...Warren Wilkes, age 13, doesn't like what a greedy housing developer has done to his peaceful mountain community, so he vandalizes the developer's property, flees into the wild, and stumbles upon an ancient human skeleton revealed by torrential rain. More than old bones have been exposed, however, and the curious artifact Warren finds makes him question his own identity, and his connection to an ancient terror. A terror destined to rise again and annihilate all that Warren loves. He must fight or see his whole world destroyed.
One Reviewer Notes:
Here's a Young Adult novel that this adult really enjoyed. Warren Wilkes, a young teen, begins a journey of discovery on a NW mountainous hike that goes far beyond anything he could have imagined. There are many recurring themes in the book - environmentalism & development, motherhood & the bounty of the earth, as well as good vs. evil. The book weaves a multi-layered story that culminates in an epic battle for -- well, I won't give it away. It's a book a young teen would love (even the guys) as well as their parents. Now I'm waiting for the next book in the series to come out so I can see whether Good prevails over Evil.

Kindle Nation Daily Bargain Book Alert: Li Bo’s TIENKUO: THE HEAVENLY KINGDOM, is our eBook of the Day at just $2.99 with 4.8 Stars on Five Reviews, and Here’s a Free Sample!

Here’s the set-up for Li Bo’s Tienkuo: The Heavenly Kingdom, just $2.99 on Kindle:

It was the year 1858 and three young runaways; Jason Brandt, son of a Hong Kong missionary, his friend Wu Sek-chong and the beautiful and defiant Black Jade, set off to find the capital of the rebel Taiping Tienkuo, The Heavenly Kingdom of Great Peace.
Established in 1851 by a failed civil service candidate who claimed to be the little brother of Christ, the semi-Christian Taiping Kingdom, had made a dramatic and bloody bid to overthrow the Confucian rule of the Ching Dynasty.

The three young people’s search for the Heavenly Kingdom and what they eventually found among the Taipings is the central plot of this historical novel of journey and self-discovery in 19th century China. Written by Professor of East Asian studies, this novel was created not only to entertain but to teach about political, social and cultural life in China during the mid nineteenth century.

Li Bo is the pseudonym of a Professor of Asian Studies.

From the reviewers:

I enjoyed the novel immensely–it’s a fun and exciting read. The author gets the big things right–the terrible violence and corruption of the Taipings in their late stages, the disgust of many Westerners for Chinese customs, and the unusual determination and stubbornness it took for those Chinese and Westerners alike who stuck with the Taipings, or in the case of Westerners, those who stayed to pursue a career in China.  — John Rapp, Beloit College, author of “Clashing Dilemmas: Hong Rengan Issachar Roberts, and a Taiping ‘Murder’ Mystery,” Journal of Historical Biography 4 (Autumn 2008): 27-58.

“Exciting Book…I like it very much. The characters are believable and the cultural details about customs accurate.”   — Dr. Alice Murong Pu Lin,author of Grandmother Had No Name

I like the book…it really held my interest…I am truly impressed.”   — Micki S. Nevitt, Children’s Literature Librarian, Guilderland School District, NY

“A rare treat. An engaging and historically accurate way to introduce young adults to a myriad of topics about China, including family, Confucianism, class differences, women’s roles etc.   — Mel Horowitz, Catskill High School, Former President, U.S. China People’s Friendship Association

I was swept away with the compelling and engaging story. I was captivated with this adventure from beginning to end. To add to my delight, I came away realizing that I had been given insight into an historical event, so not only was I richly entertained, but I was cleverly educated as well. What more could I ask from a book? My only regret is that Li Bo has not written more. I am certain there are more great tales to tell lurking in the guise of dry historical facts.  –  Donald Samson

Masterfully interweaving history, culture, and characters, TIENKUO takes readers on a fascinating journey through 19th century China.  –  Edward Tick

Here’s the set-up:
Love At Absolute Zero is about a physicist who tries to apply the tools of science to finding a soul mate. Specifically, Gunnar Gunderson, a 32-year-old physicist at the University of Wisconsin, gets a promotion, and all he can think of now is finding a wife, causing his research to falter. To meet his soul mate within three days–that’s what he wants and all time he can carve out–he and his team are using the scientific method, to riotous results.”As if Einstein didn’t struggle hard enough failing at a unified field theory,” says Philip Persinger, author of Do The Math, “Meeks ups the ante by tossing philosophy, anthropology, hashish and love (with a capital L) into the mix. And while we’re so sorry, Uncle Albert, in Love At Absolute Zero, Meeks succeeds absolutely.” “I’ve read both of Meeks’s short story collections and The Brightest Moon of the Century,” says author Kevin Gerard (Conor and the Crossworlds). “I roared through Love At Absolute Zero in a day and a half. Meeks’s prose is carefully crafted, his characters compelling and entertaining. I love everything he writes, and I recommend Love At Absolute Zero without reservation.”

By his own admission, author Robert Kroese’s debut novel, Mercury Falls, owes much to Douglas Adams’s Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. Kroese’s whimsical, apocalyptic tale offers levity, absurdity, and imagination in equal measure.
