Emmet Storch goes from unemployed sponger to insurance pro in this humorous fictional take on the twists and turns of love and lust in modern life.

Here’s the set-up…
Emmet Storch was an unemployed sponger who thought he had no calling in life. All that changed when he landed a job in the call centre at the monolithic Star Insurance where, from the very first day, he was magnificent. It was as if the very essence of insurance ran through his veins and he and his telephone were as one. Irate policyholders found comfort in his soothing words; recalcitrant contractors became polite and respectful. It would have been perfect if not for his lecherous and treacherous hormones. A humorous look at love and lust in the modern West where consumerism runs rampant and integrity can go and get stuffed.

Here’s the lowdown on Love Lust and Petty Crime from a 5-Star Reviewer
A good book! The title of this book “Love, Lust, and Petty Crime” says it all. This is a story about how a friendship starts innocently with four people (Jurgen, Voula, River, and Emmet) meeting at an insurance company. All are employed there and all become involved in one way or another. Twisted sisters, twisted brothers, she wants him, he wants the other, but, the other is dating the boss and so on. A great tongue twister with bends and curves that make you read it to the end to see who gets who. One thing is apparent, they all love each other fondly and the things they get into or are willing to do can only be understood by good friends. The author Harclubs Bartag did a good job defining these characters. It’s a quick, fun book that will make you laugh out loud.

About the Author
To be honest, my name is not Harclubs Bartag and I suppose putting this stuff here makes the whole idea of a pen name look a little silly. But I’ve always wanted a secret identity (yes, yes, I know) and the name has a story. It comes from a time when the Australian public was grappling with a new wave of continental European immigrants, and I was in my first year of High School. The teacher was reading the class list out loud and the first name was ‘Harclubs Bartag’. When no one responded, she continued on until the end of the list. My name was not called out, and I put two and two together.

‘Um, Miss,’ I said, raising my hand. ‘My name is Hercules, not Harclubs.’

She obviously thought I was taking the piss. ‘Don’t be silly, Harclubs,’ she said. ‘What sort of a cruel parent would name their child Hercules?’

Kindle Nation Daily Free Book Alert, Sunday, January 9: A free treasure trove for college applicants, teachers, nurses, lawyers, and those making their career choices, plus … A sublime blend of history, adventure and romance in Ariana’s Pride by Margaret Lake (Today’s Sponsor)

Contributing reporter Tom Dulaney provides a helpful hand as he breaks out some of the newest additions to our 300+ Free Book Alert listings this week….

But first, a word from … Today’s Sponsor

If you are looking for a sublime blend of history, adventure and romance, novelist Margaret Lake is serving up perfection in Ariana’s Pride, set in the turbulent days of the Wars of the Roses. Ariana is the daughter of an Earl and Jeremy works in the Earl’s stables. Jeremy holds the secret which could make Ariana his, but he wants her to love him for his own sake.

“Margaret Lake’s style reminds me of Baroness Emmuska Orczy’s The Scarlet Pimpernel that I read as a young man. Like that classic historical romance, Margaret Lake’s Ariana’s Pride is a magnificent achievement.
Ricky Sides, Author of the peacekeeper series,
Adventures in Reading, and The Ultimate in Women’s Self-Defense.

Loved it, from beginning to end.”
“This book is a page turner in the best sense.”
“A book to remember.”

Here’s the set-up…

Ariana’s Pride is an historical romance set during the Wars of the Roses. The story commences shortly after the Battle of Barnet where Warwick The Kingmaker was killed and Edward IV has just taken his throne back from the mad king, Henry VI. This one decisive battle affected the lives and attitudes of Ariana and Jeremy.

Ariana Devoe is the willful and arrogant daughter of Earl William. What happens when she finds that she has lost her home and family? Will she lose her heart, too, as she struggles to reach the elderly Baron to whom her father has promised her? Or will she throw away her chance to avenge her father’s death and regain her titles and estates to be with the dashing Jeremy?

Jeremy Gowen has lived most of his life in the Earl’s stables, but does not intend to end his days there. Aided by the stablemaster, once a soldier in the King’s service, Jeremy secretly learns horsemanship and sword fighting.

After the attack on her father’s castle, Jeremy finds Lady Ariana, lost and alone. He promises to take her to the Baron, but as their journey progresses, he is no longer willing to turn the woman he loves over to another man. Jeremy holds the secret which could make Ariana his, but he wants her to love him for his own sake.

What the Reviewers Say
I enjoyed this book very much. And I am not a reader of Romance novels. I don’t think this book is. It is a historical novel with a romance in it. The characterizations are excellent. Ms. Lake presents the main two characters and they are less than 100% likable. However as they overcome hardships and meet new challenges in a very short period of time, they grow-up. And they become much more likable to each other as well as to the reader. I give this book 5 stars because is is so good for a first book. And I look forward to more from this author and will purchase subsequent offerings.
–Geoff Thomas
I Loved this book .It is a wonderful Historical novel with Romance and a little Mystery. A well written first novel. I look forward to the next book by Margaret Lake.
–Anne M. Dixon

I love reading Historical Romance, so I figured this would be right up my alley. It delivered and then some.

I started reading and was immediately drawn in by the characters and the surroundings. It was very easy to care for Ariana and Jeremy, but was also surprised in a nice way how much I liked the other characters met on this wonderful adventure by the two… Once I started the book, I couldn’t put it down. It is very engaging and a great road adventure.

I loved the Historical details that brought the story to life, but weren’t to much to bog down the flow. This was a highly entertaining read from beginning to end. I can’t wait to read the next one.

–Anna-Maria
I just finished reading Ariana’s Pride by Margaret Lake. I purchased the book after reading the author’s short story “Of Love and War.” I was astonished at the character development the writer achieved in the short story; therefore, I just had to see what she could do with a full-length novel. I was not disappointed.

I chose Ariana’s Pride because of the interesting action adventure storyline. I must say that at the outset, neither Lady Ariana Devoe nor Jeremy were likable characters. Both seemed to possess character flaws that tended to cause me to dislike them. However, as the plotline unfolds, the pair comes to recognize their weaknesses and strive to overcome them. By the end of the book, they had redeemed themselves most admirably.

The author has a wonderfully descriptive narrative, which allowed me to easily visualize the various scenes depicted in the book.

The romance aspects of the novel are better than most romance books I’ve read, though admittedly they are not great in number. I don’t normally read romance novels, but this author of historical romances skillfully merges action adventure and romance. I’ve said it before, but I’ll say it again in this review. Margaret Lake’s style reminds me of Baroness Emmuska Orczy’s The Scarlet Pimpernel that I read as a young man. Like that classic historical romance, Margaret Lake’s “Ariana’s Pride” is a magnificent achievement.

Like Orczy before her, Lake has the ability to draw in crossover readers who prefer adventure books. There’s nothing wrong with that. To the contrary, any writer who can get a reader to expand their reading preferences serves the readers well. You action adventure fans should try this book. Romance fans, there’s plenty to admire here. The historical backdrop was fascinating.

I highly recommend this book. Indeed, it has caused me to rethink my preferred genres. I’ll definitely be reading other books by this author in the future.

Ricky Sides, Author of the peacekeeper series, Adventures in Reading, and The Ultimate in Women’s Self-Defense

I hope to see more of Ms Lake’s work. This book is a page turner in the best sense. It is well researched and written. No time wasted in reading this. Of course it is also set in my favorite period of English history; The War of the Roses.
–Ruth S. Mcgovern

About the Author
I was born in New Jersey (practically lived on the beach), but moved to Florida when I was 13. Reading has always been my favorite activity, even as a child. I’ve been downsizing and have probably donated 5,000 books in the past several years. I still have seven book cases crammed full and I can’t even count how many on my Kindle.
My other passion is history, especially English History. I think my interest really began when I read “Catherine” by Anya Seton. When the inspiration came to write my first book, I naturally gravitated to the Wars of the Roses because of that book.

My favorite author is Susan Howatch, my favorite book is “Outlander” and my favorite series is Harry Potter. I lead a Harry Potter book club at the elementary school.
I’m still waiting for the rescue kitty lady to find me a kitty I can rescue.

And that’s not all. Besides Ariana’s Pride, Margaret Lake has written four other popular Kindle books:

Some things are meant to be remembered―at all costs: Free sample of our Kindle Nation eBook of the Day, Whale Song by Cheryl Kaye Tardif

Some things are meant to be remembered―at all cost. Here’s the set-up for Cheryl Tardif’s popular 99-cent page-turner Whale Song:

Editor’s note: The author offers 6 of her ebooks for 99 cents through this Monday, January 10. Click here to see them.

Thirteen years ago, Sarah Richardson’s life was shattered after the tragic death of her mother. The shocking event left a grief-stricken teen-aged Sarah with partial amnesia.

Some things are easier to forget.

Thirteen years later, a familiar voice from her childhood sends Sarah, a talented mid-twenties ad exec, back to her past. A past that she had thought was long buried.

Some things are meant to be buried.

Torn by nightmares and visions of a yellow-eyed wolf and aided by creatures of the Earth and killer whales that call to her in the night, Sarah must face her fears and recover her memories―even if it destroys her.

Some things are meant to be remembered―at all cost.

From the Back Cover:

Whale Song is a haunting tale of change and choice. Cheryl Kaye Tardif’s beloved novel — a “wonderful novel that will make a wonderful movie” according to Writer’s Digest — releases as a special edition with all new scenes from the much-talked-about screenplay.

Don’t miss Whale Song, described as “a wise, enchanting story” by the Edmonton Examiner. Whale Song is a novel of dual personalities. It is both mystery novel and family drama. It is enchanting adventure and uplifting but tragic moral tale.

Whale Song integrates the optimistic spiritualism of native myth and the hard realities of modern-day life.

The only witness to a tragedy loses her memory and she must search her past for the answers. Whale Song asks the difficult question, which is the higher morality — love or law?

“Whale Song is deep and true, a compelling story of love and family and the mysteries of the human heart. Cheryl Kaye Tardif has written a beautiful, haunting novel.” — NY Times Bestselling novelist Luanne Rice, author of Beach Girls.

Kindle Nation Daily Free Book Alert, Saturday, January 8: Rick Acker’s When the Devil Whistles tops over 300 contemporary Kindle freebies, plus … the return of a classic ’90s thriller, Blood Hunter by Sidney Williams (Today’s Sponsor)

After 134 additions to our Free Book Alert yesterday, we weren’t sure what to expect today. But we’re pleased to report a very classy thriller by Rick Acker is brand new this morning. I’d say more, but I’m in a hurry to download this one to my Kindle so I can begin reading it as soon as I turn the last page of Sid Williams’ Dexterrific novel Blood Hunter!

But first, a word from … Today’s Sponsor

Finally this popular monster thriller from the 1990s is reborn as a Kindle book.
Horror! Terror! Gore! Will Jag and Debra find her missing brother?

“If you’re a fan of Dexter and the X Files you will love this book.”

“You could say the story here has been told a thousand times before. Monsters. People facing off against monsters. But here Williams has done something unusual…he’s planted within this tale a mix of crime and cops and regional lore that blends effortlessly into a fabulously enjoyable feast of mystery and mild gore.”
–Ryne D. Pearson

Here’s the set-up…

Legends abound about hideous creatures who live in the swamps near Aimsley, Louisiana. They’ve picked up the name Mormo, and they are said to be terrifying. but Jag Walker and Debra Blane discover the creatures are at the root of a larger conspiracy as they begin a search for her missing brother. As they unravel ancient secrets and modern evil, they find they must confront a nightmare.
Author’s note for the e-edition
It’s hard to believe Blood Hunter was written twenty years ago, and the unsold screenplay on which I based it even further back. That screenplay entailed what is now the latter portion of this story. I opened the tale up a little more when I turned it into a novel, my third published book. It was written while I was a young reporter, though not, by that point, as green as Jag, this book’s protagonist.

Recently, someone sent me a You Tube clip of an interview I did at a science fiction convention around the time of the original publication. I remember doing that sound bite, and it seems like yesterday. This new edition is much like the original edition. I’ve tightened the prose in places and touched up a few plot points, but I haven’t tried to update it or do major overhauls. This is a story set in the 1990s.

It’s interesting, in re-reading the text after some time, to note how the world has changed. Characters make a lot of pay phone calls and struggle with communication issues that are no longer a challenge. They also refer to a troubled economy and the impact of fluctuating oil prices. Some things don’t change at all.

There were certainly no e-books when this was first written. It’s exciting to see it gain new life in a new era. Happy reading.

What the Reviewers Say
A fun fast paced read of a reporter helping out a beautiful young lady look for the killer of her brother. Filled with blood and gore as they uncover the truth. If you’re a fan of Dexter and the X Files you will love this book. I can’t wait to read more from Sidney Williams.
–Kipp Poe Speicher
Horror, by Sidney Williams. This one takes place in the Louisiana swamps, a setting I’m somewhat familiar with. Williams captured it perfectly.
–Charles Gramlich, Author: Swords of Talera
In my personal opinion, this is one of the best books I’ve ever read. Sure, it does not compare to a Stephen King novel, but would interest younger adults. The story takes place in a small place in Louisiana, kind of like The Hellmouth on WGN Network’s “Buffy the Vampire Slayer.” Most of William’s other books also take place in that same town. I won’t tell you the name, but the “monsters” in this book are actually once people from a long time ago transformed into tree-like demons. The “Demons” must survive by devouring the flesh of humans.
Williams makes this novel intense by telling most of the story at night and mainly telling it in/around a forest. Williams ability to describe settings in full detail (E.G. “The trees with hanging branches had Spanish moss with dew droplets hanging from them”) capture you in this book and make you use your imagination in an exploring, wish you were there type of thing. This book is an excellent buy if it will be availaible on print again someday. I hate to even think of this book being out of print because it is so good. Anyway, good luck finding this book and enjoy reading

About the Author

I’m the author of eight novels all of which are becoming available as e-books from Crossroad Press. I’ve also written comic books, audio drama and much more.

I worked as a newspaper reporter for eleven years. In my early days as a general assignment reporter, my shift was 1 p.m. to 10 p.m., so I wrote fiction in the early morning hours, completing most of my work from midnight until 2 a.m., ironically an appropriate time for dark fiction.
I completed the book that would become my first published novel when I was 26.

My books writing as Michael August are for younger readers, though adults can certainly enjoy them as well.

I recently earned an M.F.A. in creative writing from Goddard College.

What Happens When Cheerleader Nicole Paxton Notices Test Davis, the Boy Who Nobody Ever Noticed? Here’s a free sample of our eBook of the Day, Failing Test by J.M. Pierce

By Tom Dulaney
Contributing Reporter

You know him, but you can’t remember his name. He is the one that is always there, in the background, all but invisible to those roaming the hallways.

What if he had a secret? What if it was a secret that even he didn’t know?

Here’s the set-up for Failing Test (The Shadow Series):

Test Davis has always been a blur to those around him. He’s a shadow like a million other kids–not smart enough for the academic team, not beast enough for the football team, not extroverted enough for the drama crowd. In all things Test is just…not, which is why no one ever notices him.

But what happens when someone does notice him– Nicole Paxton, a cheerleader, no less? What happens on the night that Test finds out there’s nothing average about him and that a powerful gift has been hidden within, secretly waiting to be set free and alter his life forever? The question is, will that power save him and those he loves or tear them apart?

Kindle Nation publisher Stephen Windwalker takes Dad Duty seriously enough to read what his kids read. Of Failing Test he wrote:

“I figured that part of my job as a Dad was to kind of be inside their heads enough to know what the challenges and dangers were. Then I branched out a bit and started reading the fiction that they were reading. Not so much the things they had to read for school, but the things they read on their own.

“One of the things that I discovered in the process, and it is something that I still believe, is that some of the best writing for adults is fiction that may actually be intended for teens. Some of the walls come down, the imagination is set free, and a sense of wonder is unleashed.

“You don’t have to be a teenager to read, enjoy, and even recommend a book like J.M. Pierce’s Failing Test. Don’t read it because it only costs 99 cents or because 17 of its 20 reviewers gave it 5 stars. Read it because there are teenagers in your life and it may be a gateway not only to getting them reading but also to your ability to connect with them and learn something about their worlds. Just a thought. –S.W.”

Here’s a new illustrated Kindle version of this beloved legend — a worthy addition to every parent’s library!

“As an English teacher and proud aunt, I highly recommend Long and Meyer’s The Tooth Fairy Legend: The Touch of Kindness. This beautifully illustrated volume of the legend of the tooth fairy includes an audible cornucopia of original songs. I have seen, first hand, its spark ignite my niece’s imagination and love of this ageless tale. As a result, it has caused her to embark on a new fondness for reading. This book succeeds due to its ability to reach several different senses. The illustrations dazzle the eyes, the accompanying compact disc appeals to the ear, and the interpretation of the story will transform children into avid readers. What a true delight. The book has transcended the usual nighttime ritual of a bedtime story into something special. My niece considers Piper Noble a trusted friend and a new favorite character. She giggles at all the same places, yet finds something new in each reading. The compact discs are wearing out my stereo, both in the home and in the car. The Tooth Fairy Legend should be in every parent’s library.”

What the Reviewers Say
THE TOOTH FAIRY LEGEND-A TOUCH OF KINDNESS by Long and Meyer is a first class children’s book complete with narration and two CD’s of the musical. The book adds a third dimension in its beautiful illustrations by artist, Nadine Zenobi.
My two grandchildren, Elizabeth, five and Mary, seven, were spellbound as they “read” the book along with their Nanny while listening to the CD’s. Of the many gifts I sent the children, The TOOTH FAIRY LEGEND seemed to be most appreciated, especially since Mary had just lost a tooth. Kudos to Long and Meyer on writing a warm and relevant book which teaches being kind to one another is its own reward.
–Marge Spitzel, RN MS
This wonderful book was very entertaining and my children loved reading along with the accompanying CDs. The music and the illustrations were beautifully done and gave life to the characters in this new spin of the Tooth Fairy story. This is a great modern update to a timeless legend. Kudos to Long and Meyer.
–A Customer
As a teacher of elementary-age school children, I was delighted to read Long and Meyer’s “Touch of Kindness.” The sensitivity with which the subject matter was treated was an important issue for me. I teach children who are struggling to understand and cope with the fear of some strange winged creature entering their bedrooms to retrieve teeth in the middle of the night. How wonderful that a book finally exists that explains it all in a humorous and yet adventurous manner. The book should keep any youngster on the edge of his or her seat. The fact that the book is chaptered allows someone in my capacity to take time with the telling of the story and ask and answer a multitude of questions that will certainly surface in the classroom. And the read-along, sing-along CD’s that are provided as an extra bonus will allow for some more than pleasurable moments in the “reading corner.” In addition, the art work adds incredible dimension to the storyline. I can’t wait to get back to work in September and introduce my new class to the wonderful, creative minds of Long and Meyer and the special world of “The Legend of the Tooth Fairy.”
–A Teacher
I recently purchased this delightful book for my 5 year-old nephew and 3 year-old niece. I must say they absolutely enjoyed both the book and the CD. They kept asking granny to re-read the book over and over again. It’s a wonderful story full of interesting and lovable characters; characters that make you laugh and pull at your heart-strings. I thoroughly recommend it -for those who cherish and treasure a little flight of fantasy.
–Stephanie Tham
