Here’s the set-up:

Two months dissolve without her knowledge and she finds herself in unfamiliar surroundings with strangers who not only profess to know her but insist she’s someone else entirely.
Laken discovers her long dead boyfriend, Wesley, has been thrown into this alternate world as well. He is quick to inform her she suffered a horrible fall and that her memory hasn’t fully returned. According to Wesley the other life she had—her name, her family, they were simply a side effect of her brain trauma.

Oh, how I loved this book. I apologize now for any gushing and rambling that will occur in this review. ‘Ephemeral’ is a completely enchanting novel that mixes the best aspects of genres together and produces something entirely new and unlike anything else out there. There’s so much going on throughout the story – zombies, creepy supernatural creatures, angels, and alternate realities. There’s a superb mix of mystery, romance, thrilling action and a fast-paced plot that compels you to keep reading until you’ve devoured the last word, only to leave you wanting more.
I loved the complex and intriguing world that the author creates in the novel. Like I mentioned, there are so many different paranormal aspects converging in the storyline that it is completely enthralling. The overlying mystery of what really happened to Laken and what is going on in this new place she’s found herself is very detailed and engrossing. There always seemed to be new twists and underlying secrets to keep the reader guessing. The romance in the book is deliciously steamy, but not overdone in the least. I found it to be the perfect level of toe-curling intimacy without diverting attention away from the rest of the story. The characters are all unique and have well rounded personalities that make them really believable and easy to identify with. I felt like I was right there beside Laken, rooting for her and wanting to help her figure out what was going on. The setting of the novel – everything from the town of Ephemeral to the school and beyond – was the perfect mix of creepy and otherwordly. The history and the backstory that the author creates in the book are very detailed and make the story that much deeper and more interesting. There honestly isn’t enough praise I can give this book – it’s definitely one of the best I’ve read this year and a new favorite of mine. READ THIS BOOK if you haven’t already – you will not regret it!!
Disclosure: I received a copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.
