Millie Reinvented

by Elodie Parkes

“Never before have I ever experienced such a post-mortem of a kiss, the way Elodie Parkes did in the first chapter of the book. It made me think about the way I kiss, am being kissed and I have to admit, I felt short-changed in the kissing department. From now on, let’s just say, I will have a new awareness in the kissing stakes.”

Saint Nick

by Fred Tribuzzo

Here’s the set-up:

Paul’s trendy spiritual ambitions have guttered, leaving him a burned-out, middle-aged bankruptcy lawyer. Now it’s almost Christmas, and the spirit world has decided to take Paul firmly in hand. Three iconic Native Americans of the nineteenth century, Black Elk, Sitting Bull and Crazy Horse, challenge Paul to a dream quest: no guarantee of safe return. It’s going to be a rough ride.

Fred Tribuzzo is a professional pilot who has flown aircraft from the J-3 Cub to the fastest corporate jet ever made-the Citation Ten. Currently flying a Boeing 737 Business Jet, his trips can range from thirty minutes to ten hours. It was on the far side of the world that he wrote Saint Nick.

In a blending of Native American spirituality with traditional Christian faith, Fred Tribuzzo’s slim volume relates the story of Paul, a middle-aged cynic about to see the bill on his self-centered life come due. A few days before Christmas finds Paul sitting home alone, playing video games before bed. Awaiting him is Christmas dinner with his mother and a reunion with his estranged son, home on leave from Iraq.

Picking up a dog-eared copy of “Black Elk Speaks” from his bedside table sets off a chain of events that awakens memories of his childhood and propels Paul into an alternative world where his heroes — Black Elk, Sitting Bull, and Crazy Horse — become flesh and blood characters. Each, in turn, challenges Paul’s cynical views, forcing him to see his life for what it is. But will Paul see the light, admit his faults, and find the courage to reverse a lifetime of cynicism and selfishness?

Trubuzzo’s writing style crisply moves the story forward, creates an eerie atmosphere in his dreamworld scenes, and provides a nostalgic view of Midwestern snowfall, last-minute holiday shopping and Christmas dinner with family.

A good read in any season, this seventy-three-page novella, with its Christmas message of redemption, promises to provide solace amid the harried holidays as well as an inspirational stocking stuffer for the book lovers on anyone’s gift list.

I will not mirror other reviews in this space by repeating a narrative analysis, suffice to say that “Saint Nick” is a simple tale, simply and effectively told. Author Fred Tribuzzo wraps it up neatly without fanfare or excessive rhetoric. This tale does not need either. A terrific short read with a lot to say. Perfect for the holiday season, or, indeed, any time one desires a rich and satisfying literary experience. Good things do indeed come in small packages. I am awaiting Mr. Tribuzzo’s next literary effort with great anticipation.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the Best YA Paranormal Books I’ve Read – A Definite Must Read!,October 7, 2012
By
Stephanie Ward (Cochranton, PA United States)
This review is from: Ephemeral (The Countenance) (Kindle Edition)

Oh, how I loved this book. I apologize now for any gushing and rambling that will occur in this review. ‘Ephemeral’ is a completely enchanting novel that mixes the best aspects of genres together and produces something entirely new and unlike anything else out there. There’s so much going on throughout the story – zombies, creepy supernatural creatures, angels, and alternate realities. There’s a superb mix of mystery, romance, thrilling action and a fast-paced plot that compels you to keep reading until you’ve devoured the last word, only to leave you wanting more.

I loved the complex and intriguing world that the author creates in the novel. Like I mentioned, there are so many different paranormal aspects converging in the storyline that it is completely enthralling. The overlying mystery of what really happened to Laken and what is going on in this new place she’s found herself is very detailed and engrossing. There always seemed to be new twists and underlying secrets to keep the reader guessing. The romance in the book is deliciously steamy, but not overdone in the least. I found it to be the perfect level of toe-curling intimacy without diverting attention away from the rest of the story. The characters are all unique and have well rounded personalities that make them really believable and easy to identify with. I felt like I was right there beside Laken, rooting for her and wanting to help her figure out what was going on. The setting of the novel – everything from the town of Ephemeral to the school and beyond – was the perfect mix of creepy and otherwordly. The history and the backstory that the author creates in the book are very detailed and make the story that much deeper and more interesting. There honestly isn’t enough praise I can give this book – it’s definitely one of the best I’ve read this year and a new favorite of mine. READ THIS BOOK if you haven’t already – you will not regret it!!

Disclosure: I received a copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.

What if Thomas Jefferson returned to life, penniless, powerless, and without a single slave?

Thomas Jefferson, Rachel & Me, a fully imagined speculative novel – 4.6 stars, just $1.99

Thomas Jefferson, Rachel & Me

Here’s the set-up:

What if Thomas Jefferson returned to life, penniless, powerless, and without a single slave? What if he meets a beautiful mixed-race woman he takes to be Sally Hemings reborn? What if he lands in a psycho ward or meets the President — at an Independence Day citizenship ceremony at his own hilltop home, Monticello, no less?

“Thomas Jefferson, Rachel & Me” is a tale told by retired history teacher, Jack Arrowsmith, a man numbed by the deaths of his wife and son. It’s about his — and his late son’s girlfriend, Rachel Carter’s — adventures with the writer of the Declaration of Independence.

They meet the ghost of Jefferson at Monticello and, fighting off their panic, agree to take him off to see America.

A history grad student at Columbia, Rachel knows secrets about Jack’s son and wife that she decides Jack must know. They will turn his world upside down, just as Rachel’s world will be changed forever by her evolving relationship with Jefferson.

Dazzled by Rachel, Jefferson regains the vigor of his prime as the trio travels together. But what then?

For all its fast pace and humor, “Thomas Jefferson, Rachel & Me” is a story about hauntings and history. It’s about love and friendship, grief and loss, family secrets and America’s own denial of its past.

“Upon receiving this book as a gift I was told by the presenter that it was one of the better books they had read this year. I couldn’t agree more. The story is moving, the characters are well developed and likable, even in their not-so-best moments. The author certainly humanized a pivotal American figure for me, even if it is the author’s take on his personality. It serves as a nice reminder that these men and women were human as well, for all our faults and talents. I would definitely recommend this book.”Here’s what another reader said: “I read your book in three sittings, which surely tells you that I couldn’t put it down. After the first chapter, I was hooked and when it ended, I wanted more. Your writing, especially your descriptions, is beautiful. Talk about using words precisely and effectively. I could see Charlottesville and Monticello and wanted to go back (especially to Fleurie, which must be new since my days). I also need to take that evening tour at Monticello. The dialogue was great, believable. Parts made me laugh. Your characters interested me, amazed me, surprised me, made me sad. I was fascinated by how you built the story, how the characters developed, how your imagination worked. I was intrigued by how much real history was there without any sense of a history lesson. And of course the Jefferson questions are irresistible. It was fun to read your book after having just read ‘The Hemingses of Monticello’ this winter. In short, WOW!!”

“Can’t sleep! TJ, Rachel & Me has taken over my body & mind like no book before. Will it be a movie? Thanks for this work.” — Roma Prindle, July 17, 2012

Praise from Kirkus Reviews

“Boody has written a wonderfully strange ‘what-if’ story that demands a willing suspension of disbelief … Yet Boody’s writing is so good, it’s easy to overlook … The author gives Jefferson a wholly authentic voice, with genuine dialogue that bears the stamp of a bygone era. Whatever the reader’s opinion of the third U.S. president, this Jefferson is delightfully quirky, flawed yet sympathetic and fascinating … An engrossing, haunting story about making up for lost time.” — KIRKUS REVIEWS magazine, April 15, 2012
5 stars from San Francisco Book Review
“The book is a tale of two men–one from our time and another from the eighteenth century–coping with lose and redemption …
“Jack and Rachel are full-bodied and felt like real people …  This is a story that will touch your heart and make you think, regardless of what century you call home.” — posted March 26, 2012 (See citybookreview.com/2012/03/thomas-jefferson-rachel-me/)

From the Author

Not everyone loves TJRM as much as Tweeter Roma Prindle did. But with its 4- and 5-star reviews on Goodreads and Amazon, I keep hoping more readers will discover this novel and find it a memorable book. It has aspects of fantasy, paranormal, historical fiction and time travel but it is not a genre book. Expect no bodice ripping vampires or sitcom plotting. I also did not want to do Jefferson-in-the-modern-day schtick: there were many opportunities for it, of course, but I avoided it, with a few exceptions. I wanted this to be a fun but serious tale with something to think about.

About the Author

Nana’s love of all things romance and adventure started with a tattered romantic suspense she borrowed from her cousin. It was a sultry summer afternoon in Ghana, and Nana was a precocious thirteen. She’s been in love with kick butt heroines ever since. With her overactive imagination, and channeling her inner Buffy, it was only a matter a time before she started creating her own characters.

Waiting for her chance at a job as a ninja assassin, in the meantime Nana works out her drama, passion and sass with fictional characters every bit as sassy and kick butt as she thinks she is. Though, until that ninja job comes through, you’ll find her acting out scenes for hubby, baby and puppy while catching up on her favorite reality television shows in sunny San Diego.

About the authors

Authors Hal and Evangelyn Spohn
The authors met in 1945 after World War II at the small Nebraska State teachers college in Kearney, Nebraska, where Hal’s parents lived. Hal was returning from the Naval Air Corp. and Evangelyn Kalstrom, known as Vange or Vangie, was a junior at the college. She was a beauty queen candidate that year. Hal wanted to play football for a year, and the team was good enough to be offered a minor bowl bid. It was easy for them to fall in love, as often announced by Binger, the owner of the campus eatery. As they entered he would always shout in front of everyone, “Hello again you two, when are you going to get married.” They were separated next year when Hal moved to Colorado University at Boulder for an engineering degree, but they continued a long distance romance.
After Vange graduated, they married in Vangie’s home town, and lived for a short time in Boulder, Colorado, where Hal finished his engineering degree.
Years later, Vange decided to share some of their life experiences, and created a beautiful plot and story line, with some of their life woven into the tapestry of a novel. Together they developed this family-oriented story, and were rescued from mediocrity by their editor Charity Heller.
