Here's the set-up:
Robert Thales, an otherwise unremarkable cop in a mid-sized city, is developing an ability to read minds. This ability gets him promoted from a report writing car to a solo car in a high crime area. His work in the high crime area gets him noticed - not in a good way. The economy of the city teeters except where illicit drug sales and adult businesses are concerned. Criminals can't launder their illicit monies fast enough and the business leaders can't get the loans they need. Financing the new convention center requires billions in municipal bonds and this need is the root of a political takeover. The formerly unremarkable cop is thrown into the middle of the scheme. Everyone is trying to get Thales out of the picture. How can he get the Feds to prosecute a case that nobody wants -- and do something in only one month? Injured, out-of-work, and hounded by hired guns; he may not live long enough to perfect his talent. The reader plunges into the mind of a young street cop who is faced with current and developing criminal conspiracies. The criminal leader becomes obsessed with removing this threat. Business leaders are drawn into a criminal web of murder and extortion through their quest for good investments. Reading minds may help in sexual encounters but its not living up to its potential anywhere else.
One Reviewer Notes:
The idea of mind reading can be tough to pull off, but in At First Thought it is done very well. The protagonist suddenly discovers he can read minds and then goes on a journey to pull down a corrupt crime lord who is running the politics of the city. Set in a future Nashville that is somewhat reminiscent of today. Overall, a great read, but do be warned this book has some explicit sex scenes so it may not be for your 8 year old.

Holotar: Last Queen of the White Shamans (A Walter Winker Mind Googler Thriller)

Here's the set-up:
Walter Winkler hates monsters. He sees plenty of them every day at Seattle’s Mary Magdalene Shelter for Homeless Youth, the inner demons haunting the crazy kids, the predators and pimps circling the shelter like sharks around a life raft. And the ones he meets and beats in video games. Nicknamed 'Pinball,' Walter has a gift for games -- and for 'Googling minds,' a talent his shelter shrink dismisses as mere schizophrenia.Walter is lured into testing Holotar: Last Queen of the White Shamans, a new kind of holographic fantasy game designed by a mad Russian. The ‘Last Queen’ character in the game reveals to Walter that there is indeed a real Last Queen, but it is her child being held captive somewhere in Siberia by monstrous ‘Blood Eating Shadows.’ Walter is beguiled into promising to rescue her child. He also discovers that the game has been hacked by a very real monster preying on young gamers.Walter sets out on a journey from Seattle to Siberia and back to fulfill his promise to the Queen and to help the gamers find their monster before it finds him. The odyssey introduces a cast of eccentric characters, including Paolo, a Brazilian game executive with a past; Leggs, a rehabbed homeless teen prostitute; and unfortunately, a twisted monster named Gvlek.Holotar: Last Queen of the White Shamans is an urban fantasy with a mainstream message. There are consequences for creating and unleashing real and imagined monsters. Because sometimes, monsters just won’t die.
One Reviewer Notes:
Walter Winkler, a mentally ill street kid with a prodigious talent for gaming, can't help getting sucked into other people's minds. When a Microsoft exec offers him $100 to test out a prototype next-generation game, she fails to mention it has a few rather nasty "bugs." What follows is a wild and fast-paced fantasy thriller that's as hard to put down as it is well-written. Lalonde's narrator is orginal, smart and vulnerable, offering insights into the nature of reality, sanity and what it means to be human. Highly recommended.

Here's the set-up:
Welcome to the world of Nola Billingsley, a 40-something biotechnology whiz with an adored shorthaired pointer, who finds herself embroiled in both a nefarious murder and a blazingly hot new romance in the thriller A Pointed Death, by Kath Russell. When techno genius Nola Billingsley finds her former employee, an amoral creep who stole secrets, murdered, she doesn’t exactly shed tears. Instead, she begins a flirtation with the inspector assigned to the case. With her shorthaired pointer Skootch watching her back, Nola and her group of techno pals try to help solve the murder, bringing into play Nola’s feisty feminism and idealism, and putting both her life and her love affair at risk. Finding a link between the Chinese government and American thieves, she bands with a group who believes that biotech people should protect their industry from any evil abusers. Could there be a government plot afoot, and can she save the world even as she tries to salvage her love life?Smart, witty, and playful, A Pointed Death looks at the biotech industry with a decidedly feminine slant. The writing is edgy and full of humor, and the plot twists and turns with surprise after surprise. A breathtaking thriller with a unique background, A Pointed Death announces the debut of an enormously talented new writer to watch.
One Reviewer Notes:
Nola is a refreshingly original sleuth: a woman who loves to shop almost as much as she likes to drink scotch, comfortable in her own skin, but haunted by her past, a feminist who embraces romance and sex.

Welcome to Bonfire Academy! Set in the foothills of the alpine mountains in St.Moritz, this exclusive private school caters to a special kind of student. Enter at your own risk... but if you are human, you may not want to enter at all. WARNING: This YA story is set in a school for paranormals who are very different from normal human teens. Thus, the language and some scenes might not be appropriate for younger YA readers. Recommended for those sixteen and above.
One Reviewer Notes:
Cordelia has been chosen to be Faustine's mentor. This wasn't in her plans for the year, but as the year went on, they became good friends. Both girls are Demons. As would be expected in a school full of paranormal's, things are constantly in upheaval. There's never a dull moment, so it's really hard to put this book down. The Portal Chronicles and Faustine have been YA books, but Ms Rose has gone a little more into the Adult arena with Initiation. Be prepared for some serious language and sexual situations. The sex is not explicit, but it's more than I would call YA material. As an adult, I enjoyed the book, as much as I have all the others.

Murder at Blue Falls, the Horse Found the Body (Appalachian Adventure Mysteries)

Here's the set-up:
Arson and murder disturb the Appalachian peace of the Triplett Valley's Blue Falls Dude Ranch. Jemma Chase, daughter of the ranch owners and trail-ride leader, becomes involved when her horse finds a body. Being an amateur SCI is fun until her meddling puts her life in danger. Detective Tucker's suspicions disturb and annoy Jemma, but in the end, he becomes the answer to her prayers. Escape to the North Carolina mountains for a week on a guest ranch..
One Reviewer Notes:
An established must-read romance author, Maggie Bishop has crossed into the mystery genre with finesse. Her latest novel is packed with suspense around a tightly-woven plot which begins with the poisoning of dogs and escalates to the murder of a local man. Throughout, she deliciously teases the reader with the bristly attraction between the investigating detective and the woman who found the man's body and who just might be a suspect. Set against the beautiful backdrop of Boone, North Carolina, with engaging characters, red herrings at every turn, and a galvanizing story line, this is a must-have, must-read. Highly recommended.

Hunting for Hemingway (A DD McGil Literati Mystery)
by Diane Gilbert Madsen
4.9 stars - 8 reviews

Here's the set-up:
Although insurance investigator DD McGil has always had her choice of lovers, she?s been spectacularly unlucky in love. Now one of DD?s former flames, Hemingway expert David Barnes, claims to have recovered the legendary stories and poems that Hemingway?s first wife lost while on a train to Switzerland in 1922. Barnes plans to auction them off for millions, but controversy rages. Are they truly the lost Hemingway works or are they forgeries? Found? Or stolen? DD?s quest to prove the manuscripts genuine puts her on the trail of a killer. The hunter quickly becomes the hunted when someone tries to stop her?dead.
One Reviewer Notes:
...[A] rather promiscuous insurance DD McGil is hot on the trail of the famous missing suitcase of Hemingway original drafts that the writer's first wife lost on a train to Switzerland. Oh, there's a requisite sample of Papa's missing pieces, but it's the reality of the Chicago backdrop presented by a Chicagoan that gives the book its credibility. And we do discover some well-researched gossip about the former Oak Park resident. But then the naïve detective becomes the hunted and--despite a few too many characters and sub-plots--it all comes to a head at the end, which like the summer storm is always a promise away.

Fascinated by crime, history and business, her interest in writing murder mysteries was sparked when she met the suspect of a murder case that occurred near her home. Her Scots heritage and membership in Robert Burns, St. Andrews and Caledonian Societies contributed to writing this book.
