“…an exciting novel from a well-respected writer. Once again, we have a work of fine science fiction which shows us how important biology is to our destiny.” —Feminist Bookstore News

“The fact is that Stephen Leigh’s new novel is a fine piece of work and one that deserves to reach a wide readership.”—NY Review of Science Fiction ***

Often compared to Ursula Le Guinn’s ground-breaking The Left Hand of Darkness, Dark Water’s Embrace is a fascinating look at issues of human (and alien) sexuality. Stephen Leigh creates a rich world with elaborate care and uses this alien backdrop to delve into issues of survival, sexuality and the meaning of life itself.

Here’s the set-up:

Twelve year-old Ricka, an orphan at Alston Manor School for Girls, has been ordered to bring up food from the cold, dreary cellar. She grips her lantern tightly as she descends the stone stairs, terrifed that her lantern will go out and that she will be stranded in the dark.

Ricka’s fear of the dark goes back to her earliest memories, back to the time when Ricka’s parents, in an effort to save her tiny daughter from marauding soldiers, hides her under the loose floorboards of their small apartment. After two days of black, near freezing conditions, Ricka’s crying is finally heard by one of the remaining neighbors, and she is rescued from the grave she had been too small to escape from by herself. Years later Ricka learns that her parents have died in a concentration camp.

As Ricka takes her turn helping in the orphanage kitchen, she tries to help her friend, Mary, who suffers from crippling arthritis. The girls work diligently to avoid the wrath of headmistress Helga who looks for ways to punish everyone except her own daughter, Nora, who constantly receives preferential treatment.

In addition to being the Headmistress, Helga is also the only teacher for the small group of girls, and the girls soon realize that Helga knows little about the subjects she pretends to teach. Occasionally the school enjoys a visit, though, from Herr Zimmerman, the Director of Libraries for Ambria. Herr Zimmerman delights in explaining the history of Alston Manor where the orphanage is now located, and also brings books and other items that he hopes will enrich their meager lives. The girls especially enjoy the folklore that Herr Zimmerman relates to them, including the story of Queen Lorinda who disappeared over 400 years earlier and is supposedly banished by a wicked sorcerer to live forever in a magic lamp. Before he leaves the orphanage, Herr Zimmerman lends each girl a book and instructs them to read it and then pass it on to the others.

Nora steals Ricka’s book before she has had a chance to finish reading it, and a fight ensues between the two girls. Headmistress Helga takes her daughter’s side and punishes Ricka by banishing her to the unlit cellar for three days. Ricka uses her survival instincts and makes herself comfortable, eventually finding an ancient leather case that contains six small brass lamps. She lights one of the lamps with matches she has hidden in a pocket, and discovers that the spirit of Queen Lorinda does indeed live inside the flame. The Queen instructs Ricka to place the lamps in various areas of the orphanage, and shows her how to travel from room to room through the magic of the flame.

Two thieving brothers decide to use Alston Manor as a hiding place. The thieves tie up the headmistress and lock up the girls. Ricka scares off the theives by dressing as the ghostly Lorinda. In the meantime, Herr Zimmerman returns to the school because he realizes the uncanny resemblance that Ricka has to his dead sister-in-law. With Ricka’s help he uncovers the financial scam that Helga has been using to run the orphanage. He also confirms, through files hidden in Helga’s bedroom, that Ricka is his niece Erica.

The author’s use of Native American legends was also a good point of interest.  I totally recommend this and I cannot wait until the next one in the series.  –  “wistfullskimmie”

I picked up the book about a small town–and suddenly I was transported there. I was scared and afraid to walk out into the dark alone. What was it that was terrorizing this small town? Could the odd professor really have the answer? This novel suspends reality for a time and takes you on a journey where the spiritual has become real–where the world is not as it seems –  Troy Lambert

I love scary, and this book was scary to the extreme. It had me afraid to open the door to let the dog out at 2:00 am. I was looking over my shoulder while I was reading and even when I closed the book and watched tv.  –  Vicki

Here’s the set-up:

Stephanie Chalice is a cop’s cop. She’s bold, smart, independent and beautiful–a powerhouse working in NYPD’s homicide unit. She’s seen a lot in her years on the force, but she’s never come across anything like the case she’s up against now.

A murdering psychopath is stalking Manhattan, on the prowl for a very special type of woman. Part of his twisted game is intentionally leaving clues for the police, clues designed not only to taunt, but to do something much worse.

Will Chalice be able to discover his real purpose before another woman dies?

From the reviewers:

“Lawrence Kelter is a new novelist who reminds me of an early Robert Ludlum.” – Nelson DeMille
“Chalice’s acerbic repartee is like an arsenal of nuclear missiles.” – BookWire Review

“Chalice is irresistible; a contemporary tour de force!” – James Siegel, Bestselling Author of Derailed

“Edge of the seat tension with a killer on the streets of New York and homicide detective Stephanie Chalice hot on the trail.” – Coffee and Crime

“Chalice is Plum and then some! All the humor and twice the drama.” Ann Loring, International Women’s Writing Guild

BookWire review:

“Don’t Close Your Eyes” begins with a whimper and a bang–two seemingly unrelated deaths. The first is a teenage girl whose asthma suffocates her while sleeping. The second is a man shot on the tram that connects Roosevelt Island to Manhattan. Lying next to the man is the real puzzle: a woman who might appear to have died of natural causes if not for the handwritten note stuffed in her mouth that simply reads “Look back.”

Meet Stephanie Chalice. She’s a smart, beautiful, 28-year-old NYPD homicide detective whose acerbic repartee is like an arsenal of nuclear missiles–it convinces her male colleagues that she means business.

Behind all the bluster, though, is a young woman with fierce passions who shows the same tremendous dedication to her ill mother as she does her job. Chalice is an excellent detective, but it comes at a cost. She suffers recurring nightmares, and obsesses that the diabetes that killed her father and weakens her mother will one day come for her.

When a second woman is found dead with a rag in her mouth and another cryptic note nearby, Chalice realizes a serial killer stalks Manhattan’s Upper East Side. Her detective work combines intelligence, persistence, a skilled partner, and well-connected friends.

“Don’t Close Your Eyes” is entertaining and engrossing. Detective Chalice is a strong character, the killer is devilishly intriguing, and the well-paced plot will keep your eyes wide open.

Here’s the set-up:

Here’s the scoop. Once there was Marlow, now there’s Mango, Frank Mango, a new detective doing his job in a very old fashioned way, an unlikely hero in an age of computers, gadgets, and gizmos. Two dead bodies have been discarded along the Sunset Strip, both aspiring actors, women of talent and ambition in a town renown for eating you up and spitting you out.

Who really cares about these nobodies? Mums the word—with the Academy Awards just days off, the powers that be are determined to sweep the dead under the red carpet, at least until Oscar can take his gratuitous bow. There are, however, wrinkles in this finely crafted plan of deception, most notably the disappearance of yet another woman, a killer whose sniper rifle is trained on the fabled red carpet, and a throwback detective who doesn’t like to get pushed around.

From the reviewers:

“Lawrence Kelter is an exciting new novelist, who reminds me of an early Robert Ludlum.”
–Nelson DeMille

“This is what they mean by pulp fiction.”–Simon Wood, author of TERMINATED

“Several young aspiring starlets are murdered in Hollywood, California, possibly at the bidding of one of Tinsel Town’s heavy hitters. When Frank Mango is hired to find a woman’s missing sister, he fears she might fall prey to the Sunset Killer. Reading like a highly suspenseful combination of hardboiled prose and standup comedy, Kiss of the Devil’s Breath will keep you guessing and laughing. Readers will want to get to know Frank Mango, the fat, funny private eye with the fruity name.” –Debbi Mack, New York Times bestselling author of the Sam McRae mystery series

..
Lawrence Kelter, author of the fine Stephanie Chalice mystery series, has just released “Kiss of the Devil’s Breath”, his first book featuring Hollywood PI Frank Mango. I found Mango to be a compelling protagonist and narrator: part anachronistic Mike Hammer, part Nelson DeMille’s wise-cracking John Corey, and part Ed McBain’s willfully obnoxious Fat Ollie Weeks. “Kiss of the Devil’s Breath” takes on the immoral underbelly of Tinseltown. The humor can be laugh-out-loud funny. The mystery itself seemed poised for a pretty standard solution, but just when I thought everything was resolved there was one final twist. A great bargain at 99 cents. -Must Read Mysteries
