Here’s the set-up:

In Jess Winfield’s second novel, fiftysomething food blogger Don Miguel de Los Angeles no McDonalds attempts to walk from L.A. to San Francisco in a Quixotic quest to find THE PERFECT BURRITO.

Steak. Beans. Cheese. Guacamole. Pico de gallo.A big, stretchy flour tortilla. AND NO FREAKING RICE! Is this a formula for self-realization?

Twenty-one year-old Maria “Mary” Sanchez, a fully assimilated, half-Chicana Valley girl, joins a fifty-something food blogger, the self-styled “Don Miguel de Los Angeles no McDonalds,” on his Quixotic quest: walking from Los Angeles to San Francisco to find The Perfect Burrito. Written in Maria’s sassy first person narrative and Don Miguel’s comically “high-styled” blog posts, this multilayered novel is part Cervantes spoof, part eulogy for decimated California Indian cultures, and part mouthwatering foodie travelogue. Yet at its core is the emotional journey of Maria, a young woman caught between teenager and adult, American and Latina, and her curious attachment to Don Miguel, who has a mysterious love of all things Hispanic. The burrito serves as a kind of Grail, a symbol of Maria’s quest for cultural identity in a corporatized, fast food culture, the fulfillment (in every sense of the word) that both Maria and Don Miguel desperately seek. While the story is fictional, the burritos and California locations are real, and the e-book will provide links to both Don Miguel’s blog and a variety of extras: from Google maps of the journey to webisodes re-enacting scenes from the book to audiobook chapters, all hosted at www.theperfectburrito.com.

One Reviewer Notes

“A joyful read. Intertwining the modern blog era to journey through the history and food of California highlights the author’s creativity and genius. Loved it.” – Amazon Reviewer, 5 Stars

5-Star Reviews From Amazon Readers

“Really great story–intricate, thought-provoking, and full of surprises. I would recommend it to anyone. Second in a series but stands alone just fine. Starts with a bang and then unbelievably ramps up even more at about the halfway mark. If you’re looking for a book you can get lost in, you don’t need to look further.”

“This is John Hilemans’s second offering in his David Chance series – I honestly could NOT put it down and found myself reading it from cover to cover in one sitting. When one chapter ends and the setting has shifted, there’s no doubt but that you will find yourself reading on to pick that thread back up! Love the characters and message (no pun intended) and looking forward to number 3!!”

Here’s the set-up for A LOVELY, INDECENT DEPARTURE:

Parents are charged with teaching their children right from wrong, but above all else is caring for their general welfare and when Italian immigrant Anna Miller loses her five-year old son, Oliver, in a custody dispute with his father she does the unthinkable and kidnaps him. They flee rural North Carolina for Italy and with her family’s help disappear into her native homeland. Months pass with no sign of the mother and son. The boy’s guileful and mean-spirited father, Evan Meade, turns to a private investigator when the ineffective efforts of the federal authorities working alongside the local sheriff, Monroe Rossi, fail to track them down. But even as the search draws them closer to Anna, Evan’s true nature betrays itself and the question to what’s in the child’s best interest becomes not so clear anymore.

At the center of the search for the missing boy is Sheriff Rossi, the embattled lawman, a divorced father himself whose black-and-white brand of upholding the law has lent much to his method of parenting. His frustration and obligation to both his community and his estranged family deepens the closer he comes to all of those involved, but at greater risk to his life’s work is the blurring of the line that occurs between law and justice. Stuck in the middle of this is Oliver, who battles his mother and others while trying to come to grips with this strange new world in which he has been thrust.

Objectively detailed, deftly and gracefully written in a voice that refuses to intrude on the minds of its characters, A Lovely, Indecent Departure is a literary thriller capturing in stark detail an intoxicating world turned upside down.

Here’s the set-up:

A Lovely, Indecent Departure is the riveting and emotionally-charged debut from a promising new voice in literary thrillers, and a captivating story of a mother’s love and desperation set amidst the heart wrenching landscape of child custody.
Anna Miller wants only one thing, her son, and she will do anything to keep him. When a district court awards custody of Oliver to his father, she abducts the five year old and flees to Italy where with her family’s help they disappear into the fabric of her native homeland. Told in prose that is both stripped-down and overpowering, Gilbert shapes the everyday conflict of child custody into a stunning search for sense of worth. Standing in the young woman’s way is Evan Meade, the boy’s guileful and mean-spirited father, who hires a private investigator when the efforts of the embattled local sheriff, Monroe Rossi, fail to track them down. But as the investigation draws them all closer to Anna, Evan’s true nature betrays itself and the question of what’s in the child’s best interest becomes not so clear anymore.
Objectively detailed, in a voice that refuses to intrude on the minds of its characters, A Lovely, Indecent Departure, captures in stark detail a world in which modern archetypes are turned upside down and shows what an extraordinary splash Steven Lee Gilbert has made with his first novel.

Settle in With A Novel That Will Keep You Guessing Until The Very End: S.J. Wright’s The Vampire’s Release, A Paranormal Romance (Undead in Brown County #4) – 4.5 Stars on Kindle

4.5 stars – 26 Reviews

Here’s the set-up:

Her hair smelled like ripe oranges. It teased and beckoned me forward. I came to stand beside her and took one of the gently waving amber locks into my fist. Her head turned towards me, but she closed her brilliant eyes and let her lashes sweep over whatever emotion that might have been blooming inside her head. Without real intent, my fingers left her hair and touched her chin.

“Why do you close your eyes?”

“You frighten the hell out of me, Michael.”

Sarah and Michael have faced deadly challenges. He gave himself over to his worst enemy to save her life. When an old friend comes to his rescue, her methods may bring an end to the Michael that Sarah Wood has come to love. The secret to his release may give rise to a lethal monster who poses the greatest threat that Sarah has ever faced.

This fourth book in the series contains language that some might find offensive, sexual scenarios not appropriate for children and violent situations. It is roughly the same length as the other books in the series (36,788 words as calculated in Microsoft Word 2010.)

One Reviewer Notes

“I have been a fan for a while. I could not wait for the release of this book, as I wondered what would come of Michael and Sarah. Well, this book certainly delivered those answers and more! This is a must read and brings the entire series to a wonderful end. There are many shocking twists and turns that you never imagine or even see coming. The ending left me surprised, but in the back of my mind I can see additional spin offs on some of the other characters in the book. I highly recommend this book, you will certainly enjoy it.” – 5 Stars
