Here’s the set-up:

Fairbanks Detective Qigiq–one name, rhymes with cheek, means white hawk–failed. He saw a suspect die, and never identified the techno-wizard who burned Alaska. Grandfather of the knife taught there is but one option after falling in the snow: stand…take another step.

So Qigiq heads south to San Francisco. His new hard-fisted partner, Kandy Dreeson, calls at dawn: a hysterical violinist named Robina is at the station shrieking about an Amazon box and her missing roommate. He rubs his eyes, grabs a jacket, and slices through Golden Gate Bridge traffic on his motorcycle–knowing this is his next step.

A barrage of body parts, heavily manipulated crime videos posted anonymously, mysterious mini-explosions, and millions of disappearing music files plunge Qigiq headfirst into a digital world of cybercrime he doesn’t understand–but is determined to master. He and Kandy dodge cars and bullets with each bit they decipher, growing ever closer to dangerous forces that trade money for murder. Closer with each delivery. Closer with each new victim.

Suspenseful and grisly with humor and seduction, Mash Up is a riveting read of intertwined action from the first sentence.

Praise for Mash Up:

“Klingler’s new thriller is a ride into the dark side of computers and comedy. Klingler’s plot definitely has a Quentin Tarantino-feel to it.”–San Francisco Book Review (5 of 5 stars)

“Read this book and review it, because dang it was good.  And the author is amazing.”–Literature Typeface

2. Make Laurie’s two-month check.
3. Find good “how to” book for PI business.
4. x Find dress for the cruise (done)
5. x Ask Mom to babysit (done)
6. Exercise.

Five Star Reviews:

I enjoyed the book. It was funny but not silly like lots of funny/ mystery books tend to be. I’ll be reading more books about Kate, Jim and Laurie.”

“This book started out with a bang!!! Kate and her husband are on a cruise dinner interacting with Kate’s mommy group, roo and you, when one of the women take a nasty fall down the staircase. The cops get involved and from there Kate can’t help but do the same especially since she is trying to start a PI business and the other moms ask her to look into it.. Kate is totally endearing and you will fall in love with her. I love her lists, which is ironic cuz as a mom myself I am so not a list writer or follower.”

Since I’m not a new mother nor likely to be a new mother any time soon, my first impulse was to steer clear of the Maternal Instincts series. What would I have in common with new mom and PI want to be Kate Connelly? But I broke down and read the first in the series and loved it. Naturally, that meant I had to come back for the second, Motherhood is Murder.

Here’s the set-up:

“Justice for the Black Knight” won the 2015 Beverley Hills Book Award for Best Legal Thriller. It was awarded the prestigious star by Kirkus Reviews which called it “…superbly crafted…intricately detailed…a must read story of relationships, prejudice and bravery, a vivid paeon for justice.” Red City Review wrote that it “…quite astutely tackles the topic of racism, combining the best attributes of legal thrillers like ‘The Firm’ with the exploratory and contemplative tone of subtle but powerful works of literature like Ralph Ellison’s ‘Invisible Man.” Clarion Reviews called it “…a twentieth century law and order fable…that has the feel of a true crime mystery, coming of age novel, and high stakes courtroom drama rolled into one…”

This dramatic legal thriller is a story of beautiful relationships wrapped in a dark mystery from the distant past that will decide the fate of a man on trial for his life. Ruby and Annabelle, who became friends during the shadow of the Great Depression, crossing the boundaries that separated them by race, are reunited at the murder trial of Ruby’s brother, the last person either of them want to believe would commit such a heinous crime. When they were children, Freddie had created a childhood alter ego called the “Black Knight,” who vowed to fight injustice in the world, and had tried to live up to that ideal throughout his life. But now, Freddie finds himself on trial for the brutal murder of an elderly man of stellar reputation, facing the death penalty, represented by an incompetent attorney, and unlikely to receive the justice he thinks, but isn’t sure, he deserves.

Justice for the Black Knight is the story of a 1981 trial, where Annabelle and Ruby reach back into the past to try to prove that Freddie is a hero instead of a villain. It is an inspirational tale of friendship extending beyond the borders of race, which also takes an exciting and realistic look at the process of obtaining justice through the legal system.
