When Horses Had Wings

by Diana Estill

4.8 stars – 24 Reviews
Text-to-Speech and Lending: Enabled
Here’s the set-up:

Pregnant at 16, Renee Goodchild drops out of school and marries. Now she’s trapped in rural Texas with Kenny, her violent, garbage-collecting husband. A bleak future seems assured until she meets self-appointed relationship guru, Pearly.

“That’s why you don’t let ‘em rule the roost. ’Cause you can’t count on ‘em to be there the next mornin’ when it’s time to crow,” the worldly Pearly advises.

Renee narrates this tale of ruin and redemption where the damaged and downtrodden lead each other to unintended, sometimes heartbreaking, and often bittersweet outcomes. When Horses Had Wings examines the lives of broken people competing for the most basic needs: the primal urge for affection and the eternal search for acceptance.

One Reviewer Notes

“I have read and loved all of Diana’s books and even though this book is fiction it could be the true story of an abused young woman in a marriage that becomes progressively worse to the point of not only mental but also physical violence. Renee still manages to have the courage to leave him and take her son with her and although her life is anything but easy, you feel like you know Renee by the end of the novel. I love when you get to the end of a book and want more and that’s how I felt when I got to the end of this book, I didn’t want it to end.” – Amazon Reviewer, 5 Stars

Kindle Nation Daily Bargain Book Alert: Diana Estill’s STILETTOS NO MORE is Our eBook of the Day at just $2.99, or Currently FREE for Amazon Prime Members Via the Kindle Lending Library, With 4.0 Stars on 11 Reviews, and Here’s a Free Sample!

In this collection of essays, award-winning humorist Diana Estill shares her wacky views on the years between mini-skirts and “Mee-maw” panties, tells the truth about “shapewear,” and offers advice on “how to talk so that your spouse will listen” and other mysteries.

Lamenting she’s “put up with this thong enough,” Estill invokes her inner fashion critic as she tackles midlife with both eyes squinted.

From the reviewers:

Sometime around 50 you realize you’ve said goodbye to your youth and hello to world of bodyshapers, random hair growth and senior specials – whether you want them or not. You can spiral into a funk or you can laugh. Stilettos No More helps you laugh, and laugh and laugh!  –  Jamie Engle

Funny, Down to Earth and Engaging.  …  a funny, down to earth commentary on the realities of aging. It’s not easy facing the physical changes that occur, without permission I might add, to our bodies when middle age and menopause invade, but Estill faces these occurrences with a wicked wit that any woman will identify with (if not openly then secretly) and embrace.  – Judi C.

Diana’s books never disappoint! How she takes everyday dramas and turns them into a comedy reflects her real talent as a writer. You can read the book in one sitting or you can savor the chapters, laughing and enjoying your time with Didi one page at a time.  –  D.S. Weisman

Who’s afraid of Menopause? Not this author. She greets it with tongue-in-cheek humor the borders on total truth. Why DID we ruin our toes and feet to prance around in pointy toed shoes with killer high heels?  I find her humor appealing on every level. I see my aging self in so many of the books scenarios. Her humor gives me hope that in aging not all is lost if you can still laugh at life.  –  J.E. Bodi

Here's the set-up:

It’s not always easy to find the fun in life’s frustrations. But as Deedee says, “Family that doesn’t kill you makes you stronger.” Among the favorite essays featured in this second book from the bestselling author of Driving on the Wrong Side of the Road are "Riding in Cars with Kids," "What's DNA Got to Do with It?", and "Why Women Won't Read Maps."

Find out why Bubbas build the best burgers, men shouldn’t use the B-word (“budget”), and the term “happy camper” is an oxymoron.

From raising daredevil children to her struggles with weight-loss, Estill mines laughter from her many failures. Anyone who's ever been aggravated by postal service, annoyed by excessive psycho-babble, or frustrated by the search for a fool-proof diet will find Estill's takes on such subjects refreshingly honest and entertaining.

Winner of the 2010 International Book Award (humor category) and a 2008 ForeWord Magazine Book of the Year Finalist.
One Reviewer Notes:
Totally Skewed is a wonderful relaxing read with many family stories closely resembling those we all experience. Diana's wit and humorous attitude toward what could have been stressful events and worries will make you laugh out loud, and enlighten your outlook for future situations in your own life. This book is delightful in that you can leave it on your coffee table for others to read a chapter or two or you can pick it up anytime to add a little chuckle to your day. I certainly recommend Totally Skewed Guide to Life.

Good news for thousands of readers who have laughed and cried along with Diana Estill, and have also wondered “When is this woman going to write a novel?”

Here’s the set-up for Diana Estill’s When Horses Had Wings, just $2.99 on Kindle:

When Horses Had Wings examines the lives of broken people competing for the most basic needs: the primal urge for affection and the eternal search for acceptance

From the reviewers:

While “When Horses Had Wings” is certainly a poignant tale, it is not a depressing, oppressive book. This is largely due in part, I think, to the wonderful prose found in the story. Ms. Estill is a true wordsmith and not only did I enjoy the actual story itself, it was a separate pleasure just to read the words.  –  Melanie Frazier

My emotions ran the gamut…from anger to sadness to hope, and even laughter at Diana’s wit. An emotionally charged read from the moment I began until I finished in only a few hours. I’ve never been to Texas, but Diana’s words let me taste the dust and feel the heat of long summers in her native state. Without doubt, this is a book I highly recommend.  –  Karen Rankowitz

As a formerly battered wife, I’ve read all kinds of takes on the bad situations hostile marriages can contain. This book was pretty much right on, with a wonderful first person narrative by Renee, a very young articulate woman, trapped by a teenage pregnancy, no diploma and an angry young husband.   If you like Fannie Flagg, Billie Letts, Wally Lamb and Kaye Gibbons, give this new novelist a read. Hope, personal fortitude and perseverance rise to the top here, and I look forward to Ms. Estill’s next fiction work.   –  Suzanne Deal-Fitzgerald

“When Horses Had Wings” is not written as a memoir, but the voice of Renee is true enough, as the narrator to the story, to make you forget it’s fiction and believe it is real. Sadly, the story is not a new one. Many women and men, boys and girls, really, face the reality of becoming parents too soon, pledging their lives with to one another and then living in failed dreams. Estill writes this story with clarity and honesty which makes the end wholly satisfying.  –  Judi C.

Here's the set-up:
Award-winning humorist Diana Estill shares her family's funniest colonic calamities: a marathon race cut short by "bubble gut," a snorkel trip ruined by a Caribbean buffet, and a "hell burger" that defended its title against her normally demure daughter-in-law, and more. Stranded without wipes when only a fire hose could do the job, each victim gains more than renewed appreciation for indoor plumbing. Length: 9,000 words
One Reviewer Notes:
Diana has been a favorite of mine since she published her first book Driving on the Wrong Side of the Road: Humorous Views on Love, Lust, & Lawn Care. Her humor in 'Crap Chronicles' is targeted at a often sensitive, if not embarrassing, subject and she manages to hit the bullseye with witty controlled prose. I believe the only thing out of control was my laughter and I applaud Diana's effort.
