When terminally ill combat pilot Jake Bronson emerges from an MRI with extraordinary cognitive powers, everyone wants a piece of his talent–including Battista, one of the world’s most dangerous terrorists. Thrust into a deadly chase across Europe and Afghanistan to save his love and her autistic-savant daughter, Jake discovers that his newfound talents carry a hidden price that threatens the entire human race.

An original weave of current events bound by colorful locations and cutting-edge technology, Bard’s novel is a must-read for fans of Michael Crichton, James Rollins, Clive Cussler, and Brad Thor. A dynamic mix of fast-paced action and thought provoking soul, this book challenges the reader to keep pace with every sharp turn and shocking twist. Acclaimed by fans of action, sci-fi, and political thrillers alike, Brainrush is one of the most innovative and entertaining books of the year.

Brainrush is Book One of a series.

One Reviewer Notes:

“One of the things I loved about this fast paced thriller, is that apart from Venice, which Richard Bard depicts so incredibly vividly in full Technicolor 3-D, I’ve never been to any of the other exotic places he brings so graphically to life, and yet I felt I was right there with his amazing cast of characters, with the sound and the action happening all around me. Afghanistan, Kuwait, Monaco and – where it all starts, Redondo Beach, California – and back again to romantic Venice, where it ends…

“Without this being in any way autobiographical, Bard has undoubtedly drawn on his own wide and varied experiences to bring detail and authenticity to every meticulously researched scene he writes. Much of the action could not have been written by anybody who had not gone through the drama and horror he brings to life with his concise yet flowing prose. This is a wonderful thriller – and there’s a sequel! Don’t miss it.

–Sheila M. Belshaw

About the Author

As a young Air Force pilot, Richard was diagnosed with cancer and learned that he had only a few months to live. Thirty-six years later he’s still going strong. He earned a management degree from the University of Notre Dame and after leaving the Air Force he ran three successful companies involving advanced security products and hi-tech displays used by US embassies and government facilities worldwide. He was an active member of the California Crime Prevention Officer’s Association and has been published with cover stories in Security magazine and ASIS Security Management magazine.

When asked what he hopes to achieve as a writer, he said, “The dream for me is to be walking through an airport and notice someone with her head buried in the book. Many readers have said they found it impossible to put down. For me, that’s the ultimate compliment.” Bard currently resides with his wonderful wife in Redondo Beach, California, where he remains in excellent health.

KND Kindle Free Book Alert, Weekly, September 6: FIVE (5) BRAND NEW FREEBIES added to over 1,100 FREE TITLES Sorted by Category, Date Added, Bestselling or Review Rating! plus … Bonnie Rozanski’s “Y” (Today’s Sponsor, $1.99)

Powered by our magical Kindle free book tool, here are this morning’s latest additions to our 1,100+ Kindle Free Book listings….

But first, a word from … Today’s Sponsor

At once a fast-paced thriller of a gripping race for a cure, a speculative tale about a futuristic society, and a comic battle between the sexes, Y is, above all, the story of real people caught up in a society they no longer recognize.

“Y”

by Bonnie Rozanski

Text-to-Speech and Lending: Enabled
Don’t have a Kindle? Get yours here.

(Ed. Note: I’ll admit that I’m not quite so reconstructed that I’ve become a big reader of Doris Lessing or Margaret Atwood. But Bonnie Rozanski and Marge Piercy? Once I start reading I can’t put them down, because it’s about characters and story more than doctrine. -S.W.)

Here’s the set-up:

The year is 2011, the place, New York City. A mysterious microbe has begun to infect women of child-bearing age. Though the medical establishment writes it off as a simple flu, and the epidemic appears to be dying out, a young New York obstetrician confronts a conundrum. In the past year, the ratio of boys to girls born in her practice has declined precipitously. Dr. Deborah Kruger suspects the truth: that infected women are no longer able to give birth to male children.

With the help of her husband Larry, a computer analyst, Deborah tracks the epicenter to New York City, from which the infection is already bursting forth. And, as years pass, despite hundreds of laboratories at work on it, the microbe continues to overrun borders and envelop the Earth. With Science unable to stop it, and the contagion rippling worldwide in an AIDS-like pandemic, how will society cope in an increasingly female world?

Unquestionably, some changes are inevitable. Companies hire more women; who assume more leadership positions, replacing the male hierarchy with their own female style of management, to great success. Among the younger generation, monogamy is increasingly replaced by polygamy. Wars decrease. Crime falls. Football attendance is down. Ballet is up.

“Y” follows three New York City families for an entire generation, each with its own story. The blue-collar husband proves unable to deal with a wife who has become the major bread-winner. The yuppie husband does well in his career but cannot resist the temptations of a workplace with limitless young women. His wife, turned off from men entirely, will leave him and become a force to reckon with in her own right. And, along the way, the children of all three families struggle to find mates and to secure their own places in this new, topsy-turvy world.

One Reviewer Notes:

“Rozanski’s “Y” is a great story that keeps the reader engaged from beginning to end. It takes the battle of the sexes debate to a whole newer and smaller (i.e. microbial) level. There are definitely moments where the feminist in me wanted to shout with joy in a XX chromosome moment of female empowerment, while at other times I wanted to weep for the dwindling number of men and the reality that this could be the end of the human race as we know it. This is a fun, easy read. I highly recommend it…

KND Kindle Free Book Alert, Saturday, September 3: SIXTEEN (16) BRAND NEW FREEBIES in the last 24 hours! Over 1,100 FREE TITLES Sorted by Category, Date Added, Bestselling or Review Rating! plus … Matt Schorr’s ELIJAH – a novel that tackles the big questions (Today’s Sponsor, $3.99)

Powered by our magical Kindle free book tool, here are this morning’s latest additions to our 1,100+ Kindle Free Book listings….

But first, a word from … Today’s Sponsor

A small rural community is united around a single church – until, that is, a stranger named Elijah arrives and changes the town’s reality. But who or what is Elijah?

Elijah

by Matt Schorr

4.0 stars – 2 Reviews

Don’t have a Kindle? Get yours here.

Here’s the set-up:

One Lord. One faith. One baptism.

These are the dictates that rule Antioch, a small, rural community tucked away in the hills of Kentucky. There is no dissension. No discord or strife. All of Antioch’s citizens gather each week without fail at one church. One church and no other: ChristPoint.

The Rev. John Joshua Hutchinson serves as pastor for the church and indeed the entire community. As Antioch’s sole spiritual leader, he holds near-absolute power over all who live there.

But that’s about to change.

A mysterious stranger is about to enter Antioch, an unassuming man with a stranger power all his own. His name is Elijah, and he wields a power like no one in history–save one.

But who is he? What is he? Can he be trusted?

Elijah’s presence will challenge not only the power Rev. Hutchinson holds over Antioch, but also the mindsets of everyone in his community.

One Reviewer Notes:

“I like stories that tackle the big questions. That involve the three big no-nos – religion, sex, politics. This book draws from the Christian religion, but in a manner that is highly entertaining and a fast-paced read and more like a thriller. The set-up in the beginning starts up slowly, but after that it whizzes along. It will challenge who you think the good guys and bad guys really are. Oh, and what does it mean to be a good person anyway?

Key West, 1991. Don Roy Doyle is back in town. Tough and quick-witted, he’s fresh out of prison, where he served three years for a diamond swindle. Now he’s back to collect his share of the proceeds, about $200,000, but the money has vanished.

A local family dynasty which has controlled the island’s politics for generations, a cop with a grudge, the FBI, and the Russian mob all have a stake in the action. They’re convinced Cuba is on the verge of “opening up”, and they all want Doyle gone.

In this tightly-knit town, who can be trusted? And how long can Doyle stay alive?
SETUP ON FRONT STREET takes you inside the world of Key West noir, a world tucked way back in the shadows, where the tourists never go.

One Reviewer Notes:

“Setup On Front Street is my favorite Mike Dennis offering so far. Dennis has a gift for drawing psychologically true characters and opening up a world that is only glossy on the surface. I found myself rooting for a truly flawed hero, who is only marginally better than the criminals he is out to destroy. This is a suspenseful story of tenderly nursed vendettas, ramped up grudges that keep coming at you until you realize that you have gotten halfway through the novel without putting it down. This book is flawlessly plotted, dark and oddly humorous in parts – something I really enjoy – a mark of intelligent writing. I really enjoyed the balance and multiple layers in this novel including a surprisingly tender romance in the middle of the gutter and bloodshed. I think we are witnessing Mike Dennis come into his own as a noir writer – but with a signature style that distinguishes his work from the many others writing in this genre. Stylish and dark, I am beginning to truly know this voice.

About the Author

After thirty years as a professional musician (piano), Mike Dennis left Key West and moved to Las Vegas in 2006 to become a professional poker player, but turned to writing when his first novel was published. In December 2010, Mike moved back to Key West.

SETUP ON FRONT STREET is his second published novel. It’s the first in a series of three noir novels which lift the veil on Key West, revealing it as a true noir city, on a par with Los Angeles, New Orleans, or Miami. Mike has published THE TAKE, a novel, and BLOODSTAINS ON THE WALL,  collection of three short stories from the dark side.

The Shop of Shades and Secrets

Here’s the set-up:

In the tradition of Barbara Michaels and Mary Stewart comes a new take on a modern gothic.

When Fiona Murphy inherits a small antiques shop from an old man she met only once, she’s filled with surprise, confusion and delight—and a little bit of terror at having a new responsibility in a life she prefers to be free and easy.

As she takes over ownership of the quaint shop, odd things begin to happen. Lights come on and off by themselves, even when they are unplugged…and there is a chilly breeze accompanied by the scent of roses even when the windows are closed.

H. Gideon Nath, III, is the stiff and oh-so-proper attorney who helps settle Fiona’s inheritance, and despite her flightiness and fascination with all things New Age, he finds himself attracted to her against his better judgment.

After she finds an unpleasant surprise in one of the shop’s closets, scares off an intruder in the store, and uses her skill at palmistry to read Gideon’s future–of which she seems to be a part–Fiona begins to realize that her free and easy life is about to change…whether she wants it to or not.

One Reviewer Notes:

“Gothic and contemporary aren’t two words you usually find in a book description nowadays, but Shop of Shades and Secrets is both. I really enjoyed the adventures of free-spirited Fiona and up-tight Gideon (especially when he lets loose) as they fall in love and solve a mystery. Even as a ghost from the past roams Fiona’s newly-acquired shop, she keeps both feet in the modern world, even getting involved in the political aspirations of one of the other characters. Gideon fights his skeptical side but never loses sight of family, friends or Fiona. Loved it!

“I miss the gothics of twenty and thirty years ago and welcome Gleason’s take on this classic genre.

Here’s the set-up:

Mystery writer John Urban provides four short stories plus an opening excerpt from his soon to be released mystery novel. The 20,500 word e-book includes:

“Junior Jameson” Extreme wealth, corporate excess, and a crime that takes the reader from New York to Antigua and back.

“Courtesy Call” A locally grown police officer patrols his home community on what was to be a quiet summer evening.

“The Association” Retirement life in Stuart-by-the-Sea is quiet and dull. Or at least it was until now.

“Halfway Rock” Urban’s protagonist, Steve Decatur, sets out in a water-borne chase on the stormy waters of Buzzards Bay.

“Devil’s Bridge” An opening except of a new Steve Decatur mystery involving modern day slave trafficking that draws historical echoes from the days of the early 1800s when ships from Newport and Bristol, Rhode Island sailed the Triangle Trade.

Five Star Review:

“I don’t usually read short stories but since I enjoyed Urban’s novel, A Single Deadly Truth, I decided to give his Urban [S]horts a try.

“I found all four of the stories varied and interesting and I have to say I enjoyed reading them. This doesn’t mean that I’m going on a short story reading frenzy anytime soon, but if John comes out with another story collection in the future I’ll probably pick them up. Besides, how can you beat four stories for 99 cents.

Mike Jastrzebski
