L B Gschwandtner’s The Naked Gardener – 21 5-star reviews and just 99 cents on Kindle! It’s our Kindle eBook of the Day, and Here’s a Free Sample

In her first novel, award winning writer L B Gschwandtner explores the push and pull of love in a subtle yet fulfilling read that leaves one feeling grateful for her circle of friends and the freedom to make the choices that drive our lives.

Here’s the set-up for L.B. Gschwandtner’s The Naked Gardener, just 99 Cents on Kindle:

Artist Katelyn Cross loves Greg Mazur and he loves her. He wants to be married but a previous relationship that went sour has made Katelyn overly cautious about any permanent commitment.

And what about Greg’s first wife? He lost her to cancer and Katelyn worries that he’s only looking for a replacement.

What’s a girl to do? Canoe down a river with five gal pals, camp out, catch fish, talk about life and men. The problem is, a river can be as unpredictable as any relationship and just as hard to manage.

On their last day, when the river turns wild, the women face the challenge of a lifetime and find that staying alive means saving themselves first while being open to help from a most unlikely source.

As Katelyn navigates the raging water, she learns how to overcome her fear of change in a world where nothing stays the same. When Katelyn returns to her garden, she’ll face one more obstacle and the naked gardener will meet the real Greg Mazur.

From the reviewers:

“In her first novel, award winning writer L B Gschwandtner explores the push and pull of love, a woman’s need to maintain her individuality within marriage, and the bonds that can make women stronger even when the world feels as if it’s breaking apart.”

“The characters are appealing, both as individuals and as a group, and I was quickly pulled into their story. 4 strong stars…”

“I would hands down read anything that L. B. Gschwandtner writes.”

“I enjoyed the book, and would recommend it. Now, whenever I see a garden, I’ll probably think, ‘That chick from The Naked Gardner book would be in the buff here.'”

“…the book surprised me in such a great way. Both the writing style combined with the interests and the voice of the book’s main character, Katelyn, spoke to me in a way that seemed incredibly close to life.  The conversations these women have and their reactions to each other were yet again faithful to the way (I believe) many women actually act in real life.”

“… the novel is not really about gardening naked; it is about the freedom to make the choices that drive our lives.”

“I thought The Naked Gardener was a satisfying read with an underlying female empowerment theme. It left me feeling grateful for the circle of female friends I have and desiring a girls’ weekend with them.

L B Gschwandtner is married, the mother of three daughters, and is a writer, magazine editor, artist, and co-owner with her husband of an integrated media business.

“A flawed and edgy hero. Dark wit, excellent writing and action-packed pace.”—The Rap Sheet, January Magazine

And don’t miss this great deal on the first three books in the series!
4.8 Stars from 28 reviewers!

From the reviewers:

“Mick Callahan is a man with a past, a mean right hook, and a radio talk show. He’s pretty good at giving people advice – just not necessarily good at taking it. The strength of this series is in its central characters, flawed, human, often funny, sometimes tragic, and the relationships among them.”—Mystery Scene

“Mick Callahan is not only likeable (as deemed by Library Journal) but he manages to endear himself as a very realistic hero, with a strong sense of purpose and an equal dash of vulnerability.”—Cemetery Dance

“Mick’s road to redemption is wry, bittersweet and altogether touching.”

Harry Shannon has been an actor, a singer, an Emmy-nominated songwriter, a recording artist in Europe, a music publisher, a VP of Carolco Pictures and worked as a free-lance Music Supervisor on films such as ‘Basic Instinct’ and ‘Universal Soldier.’

He holds an MA in Psychology and is currently a counselor in private practice. Although primarily a novelist, Shannon has sold stories to a number of genre magazines including ‘Cemetery Dance,’ ‘Horror Garage,’ ‘City Slab,’ ‘Crime Spree’ and ‘Gothic.net.’ He contributed a 25,000 word mystery/horror novella to a recent Cemetery Dance limited-edition collection called ‘Brimstone Turnpike,’ as well as short fiction to several horror anthologies, including ‘Tales from the Gorezone,’ ‘Small Bites,’ ‘The Fear Within,’ and ‘On Dangerous Ground,’ a new anthology of western noir edited by veteran author Ed Gorman.

Shannon’s first signed limited edition short story collection ‘BAD SEED’ debuted in June of 2001. His debut horror novel ‘NIGHT OF THE BEAST’–the first in a pulp trilogy set in northeastern Nevada–was released in 2002. The acclaimed ‘NIGHT OF THE WEREWOLF’ won the small-press Tombstone Award for Best Novel of 2003. The final book, a 2005 Delirium Books limited edition of ‘NIGHT OF THE DAEMON,’ sold out in pre-order. These ‘Night’ books are currently out of print but remain available on Kindle.

Harry Shannon’s first noir effort, ‘MEMORIAL DAY (A Mick Callahan Novel),’ takes place in fictional Dry Wells, Nevada. It was a hardcover release from Five Star First Edition Mysteries in May of 2004. New Mystery Reader called it ‘brilliant,’ also ‘wry, bittersweet and altogether touching,’ Library Journal praised it as ‘memorable,’ and Booklist said of amateur sleuth Mick Callahan ‘Let’s hope he’s around for a long run.’ The sequel, ‘EYE OF THE BURNING MAN’ came out in November, 2005 and was also well-reviewed. A third Mick Callahan novel ‘ONE OF THE WICKED’ was released in early 2008.

Shannon’s thriller ‘THE PRESSURE OF DARKNESS’ was released in November of 2006. He also scripted the horror film and novel ‘DEAD AND GONE’ for darkhaze.net fetish photographer/director Yossi Sasson, and played a bit part as the Sheriff. Lionsgate released the DVD.

Shannon’s collection of short fiction “A HOST OF SHADOWS” was published by Dark Regions Press in May of 2010 and nominated for a Stoker Award by the Horror Writer’s Association. The the novella PAIN was released that fall.

‘RUNNING COLD’ (the fourth Mick Callahan) along with
The Mick Callahan Novels, a Kindle compilation of the first three books in the series, were released this year. Most recently, he has written a pulp novella called ‘THE DEAD MAN: LUST FOR BLOOD.’

Here’s the set-up for Stephen Parrish’s The Tavernier Stones, just $2.39 on Kindle:

When the body of seventeenth-century mapmaker Johannes Cellarius floats to the surface of a bog in northern Germany with a 57-carat ruby clutched in his fist, the grisly discovery ignites a deadly twenty-first-century international treasure hunt to unearth the fabled Tavernier Stones.  The hoard reputedly contains some of the world’s most notorious missing jewels, including the 280-carat Great Mogul diamond and the 242-carat Great Table diamond.

Scrupulously honest Amish-born cartographer John Graf teams up with outlaw prospector and gemologist David Freeman in a ferocious race to find the treasure and break a secret code that will unravel the centuries-old Tavernier Stones mystery. But other fortune hunters, opportunists and criminals alike, are in hot pursuit of the mismatched partners–and they’ll stop at nothing to possess the legendary jewels.

From the reviewers:

“Relentlessly fascinating, Stephen Parrish’s Tavernier Stones is reminiscent of Dan Brown’s Lost Symbol . . . It’s one hell of a good time.”–Mark Terry, author of The Fallen

“The author certainly knows his subject matter and relates it to historical fact. There should be something to appeal to readers of all persuasions.”–The Mystery Reader

“Parrish keeps the dialogue light, throws in more than a few witty scenes, and ties it all up in a neat and satisfying bundle at the end. What more could you want from a late summer read?”–Bookgasm

“If his subsequent novels are researched to the same degree, he could claim a legitimate position among the notables of this genre.”-Library Journal –April 1, 2010

Stephen Parrish is a cartographer and gemologist. The Tavernier Stones is his first novel. He lives in Germany.

The Author writes:

The character Woody Allen plays in his movie “The Front” is asked how he came to be a writer. He answers that he worked as a sailor, a boxer, and all those other professions a writer must pursue in order to gain the necessary background.

I have a fear of deep water, and I’d just as soon chew rocks as hit someone, but my experiences are no less varied. I’ve been a caddy, a factory worker, a bartender, a chef, a soldier. Most recently I spent twelve years directing university outreach programs in eight European countries.

I earned a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from the University of Louisville and a master’s degree in cartography from the University of Illinois.

While in graduate school I raised money in a trademark variety of ways: as teaching assistant, research assistant, fellowship recipient, and even jewelry salesman. The jewelry experience led to the completion of a gemology diploma from the Gemological Institute of America.

After graduating I accepted an offer from R.R. Donnelley Cartographic Services in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. The company, at the time the most prestigious custom mapping firm in the country, has since split into several enterprises including MapQuest, the most prolific map source on the web.

THE TAVERNIER STONES draws on much of my education and experience, especially in cartography and gemology. Even my mathematics background finds expression in the code breaking aspect of the novel. As do years of overseas residence, a passion for history, and enthusiasm for wine, magic, and other subjects that enrich the story.

Hollywood Stylist to The Stars Zoey Witherspoon is a wanna-be Stephanie Plum, and to that end, she’s now moonlighting as a badge-toting P.I. But on her way to style one of her infamously diva-esque clients, she discovers her first Dead Guy in a Range Rover parked next to her. And this isn’t just any dead guy. It’s the guy with a Russian mob connection, who her former client, King Bernard McCall, hired to knock her off.

Bond, James Bond-style Double Agent Roman Bellesconi is hell-bent on bringing down Ponzi-scheming King Bernard McCall. Why? Because (1) that’s his job. But also because (2) he’s got a lot more at stake than job security. If he doesn’t bring down Bernie, his family’s monarchy will be destroyed.

As the dead guys keep piling-up around ‘em, Zoey may be damn sick of Roman’s deep and very dark secrets, but, she’s also convinced that perhaps, like Roman’s been reiterating, it’s only because he’s keeping those secrets that they’re both still alive.

But is there a way for their cover to be blown, Roman’s secrets thus revealed, and each of ‘em live to tell about it?

Sarah Brightman’s Life Will Never Be the Same in Our Kindle eBook of the Day, S.J. Wright’s The Vampire’s Warden – Just 99 Cents, and Here’s a Free Sample

Sarah had read grandfather’s journal in stunned disbelief. But now, a vampire stood a foot away from her. What was once grandfather’s responsibility has passed to her father and now to her. She has become the Warden. Her life will never be the same.

Sarah has spent her whole life believing that her mother had died in a car accident. When her father passes away and leaves her to run the family-owned Woodhaven Inn, she finds out that the Inn isn’t the only thing she’s about to inherit. Her life is about to get very complicated.

It was a flash in the moonlight, a blur of motion like she’d never witnessed before. No human had the capacity to move like that. When she found herself face-to-face with him there in the meadow, she knew without a doubt that the journal was authentic. She knew that  grandfather hadn’t been crazy at all.

Because a foot away stood a vampire.

Sarah had read grandfather’s journal in stunned disbelief. What was once grandfather’s responsibility has passed to her father and now to her. She has become the Warden. Her life will never be the same.

From the reviewers:

Totally amazing!  I read this book in one day! I couldn’t get enough of the story! I got to the last page and wanted more! Can’t wait for the next book!

To say I liked this book would be an understatement! I loved this book! Not only is it suspenseful, it is romantic with a dark twist. Comparable to the Twilight series, Vampire’s Warden is a must read! An explicit start to an exciting series. Can’t wait for the next book to come out!

Have read the Twilight Series and this is rated almost as good as it.

S.J. Wright is an up and coming new author who has written a book that pushes into an area where few dare to go in her diversion from the norm of what is and isn’t acceptable with regard to the characteristics of vampires. Her inclusion of the ‘watcher’ or ‘warden’ is also an interesting twist.

Ms. Wright is an author to watch. She tells the vampire story from a fresh perspective–that of a heroine who’s got what it takes to handle not only the undead, but the criminally undead. There are some flaws, but they’re easily overlooked by the reader who likes a page turner.

I lost some sleep over this book, preferring to stay up until the wee hours of the morning to find out what happened. I can’t recommend it enough!

The unconventional spin on a traditionally overdone topic refreshes it and makes it into something new.

S.J. Wright is a stay-at-home married Mom with two boys, an overworked husband and a very devoted Jack Russell terrier named Shelby.

In her struggle to rescue him, she finds evidence the opposing armies may be connected, controlled by a single individual with his own agenda. With loved ones on both sides of the war, she is forced to decide who she can trust as she tries to stop the fighting. But, can she even trust her own sanity?

From the reviewers:

Readers and fans of the magical will enjoy this tale as we follow the lead character in her journey to not only find out who she ultimately is but also as she struggles to find a place. Searching for best friend who has been mistaken to be a wizard, she also must discover if there is a place in his life for her at the end.

“The Girl Born of Smoke” appears to be, at first glance, a simple tale of journey and self discovery. However, to under-estimate the story is to over-estimate yourself. Every time I thought I had the tale figured out, author Jessica Billings turned it around and went off some new direction, daring me to guess again. Who is a hero and who is a villain is a continual question not answered at length until the very end.

Written in inviting prose and populated with living, vibrant characters, the author tempts the reader to turn the page and continue on regardless of the hour or the day. Don’t start this book unless you’ve the proper time to lose yourself in its pages. And remember–you might *think” you know what’s going on, but you probably don’t.

I really enjoyed this book. The twists and turns the author took me on were amazing. Just when I thought I had one person or situation figured out, the author threw me for a loop!

Magic users, wizards, vying armies seeking her…all very wonderful components to this story that will have you turning each page in anticipation. Never a dull moment in a well-crafted story.
Jessica Billings is currently going to school in Michigan, but will always consider herself an Oregonian. She likes photographing bugs and majored in biology and education at Oregon State.

She is now pursuing a master’s degree in environmental engineering. She learned to scuba dive when she was 14, but refuses to dive into the frigid waters of Michigan.

Here’s the set-up for Eric Liu’s Terrene: The Hidden Valley, just $2.99 on Kindle:

Within every person lies the power to change one world. Within Flora lies the hope for two.

In the isolated rural valley of Terrene, where technology is grown, not manufactured, Flora Karachi paints her anguish with flowers and yearns to travel outside the mountain walls that guard her village. But in a society which values harmony and symmetry above all else, her dangerous curiosity and her indelicate scars, earned from a lifetime of inexplicable blackouts, make her an outcast with few prospects for adventure.

Then the dreams come. Lucid and overpowering, they throw Flora into a fascinatingly advanced world where she lives the life of Jane Ingram, an American scientist fighting global climate change while trying to raise a child in a society where interpersonal interaction is becoming obsolete.

Flora’s blackouts open a window into knowledge lost long ago and possibilities that are yet to come. To unravel these mysteries, she must travel to the enigmatic Institute, an ancient enclave hidden in the surrounding mountains, where scholars guard the secrets of Terrene.

Living two lives, Flora will fight to become an Institute scholar in her own world while struggling to save the planet from humanity’s neglect in Jane’s. Yet all of Flora’s courage combined with all of Jane’s experience may not be enough to defeat the powerful forces protecting the secret which ties their two worlds together. To find salvation for both worlds, Jane and Flora must sacrifice their own dreams, conquer their fears, and discover hope for a new beginning.

Hailed as a clever blend between science fiction and fantasy, Terrene explores the challenges of accelerating technology and global climate change through the stories of two remarkable women in two worlds that are not as distant from each other as they seem.
