From the Author: I started writing novels in my mid teens. The first was your standard issue big fantasy epic trilogy – the chosen ones sent to find magic thingamabobbies to defeat shadowybigbad. This was a story which I kept changing and rewriting, until the shadowybigbad had become a navy-eyed mad boy, a different main character had taken over the plot, and book three abruptly diverged into alternate worlds and spaceships and ornate moons and it was not very standard issue at all.

I’ve had eighteen novels published – sixteen crime, one historical and one romance. I’ve been plucked from slush piles twice: once by Robert Hale, and once by Macmillan, who took Dead Before Morning, my very first mystery novel, and published it in 1993. They sold it in turn to St Martin’s Press in the US and thence on to Worldwide for softcover publication. Not bad for a writer who had endured six long years of rejections for her first six novels.

My eighteenth novel, Deadly Reunion, came out in the UK in February 2011, it’ll be out on 1st June in the States.

I’d read Misa’s other books (in the Lola Cruz series), so when I picked this one up, I already knew she could write. I didn’t know she could be chilling. This is a creepy book, in the very best sense of the word. As a child, Karen suffered frequent bouts of insomnia. The only way she could settle into sleep many nights was to imagine stories that played out like movies on the dark ceiling over her bed. Since her mean parents refused to replace the TV after the cat blew it up by peeing on the cord, all Karen had left to entertain herself in the lone wilds of the Minnesota wilderness were books and her own stories.

As Karen grew, the stories grew with her. One day when she was fourteen, she told her mother one of these stories for probably the hundredth time. Her mother, who knew Karen very well, turned to her and said, “You know, Karen, you keep talking about these stories, but you never write them down. You keep saying you’re going to write a novel, but I don’t believe that you will.”

Though it’s a stand alone adventure that takes place over a 3 day dog sled race, it feels like the pilot of a television series in that I could see it setting up lots of future adventures. The flash gold especially is more introduced than explored in full here, and I am curious to learn more about it as well as the background of the two main characters.

The main female lead, Kali, is smart and tough while still being vulnerable and easy to identify with. I like that the story opens with her tinkering on her steam sled, one of her many inventions, and she’s holding a wrench and covered in grease when our mysterious stranger (Cedar) walks in. My kind of lady.

The story was fast-paced with enough going on to keep my interest. I think steampunk fans will find enough steam-ish inventions to satisfy them, though I’ve noticed the author isn’t one to throw in a lot of extraneous gadgets and gizmos just to add steampunk flair.

I’m tagging this young adult since the main character is eighteen, and there’s nothing too racy in the story, but I liked it fine as an adult reader too. A fun fantasy adventure in a setting that will be familiar to those who read Jack London as kids.

I’m a professional blogger for my day job, and I live in the Seattle area (“area” is code for ‘I couldn’t afford a house within twenty miles of the city limits and my neighbors have alpacas’). I have two vizslas who are as spoiled as most people’s kids. Occasionally they let me leave the house to play tennis, go to the coffee shop, or take a yoga class.
