Here’s the set-up:

In the high crime era of 1980’s New York City, David is trying to survive his senior year of high school.

He longs for a relationship with Delancey, a girl he believes to be out of his league. He pursues her while fending off his classmates’ advances. David must survive street gangs, the crime on the subways, and still find a way to study for the SATs and graduate. And yet his undecided about college, a career, and his musical talents. His indecision and regrets keep holding him back.

But what about the school prom? Can he get the girl of his dreams to go with him or does he lose her forever?

Based on the classic Greek myth of Orpheus, the story is complete with mythological references, clues along the way, and an out of this world supernatural journey that will leave the reader wanting more.

A modern spin on Greek myths, World’s Apart is poignant and gripping. 5 star review

Here's the set-up:
An epic 1980's Supernatural tragic coming of Age love story.

The high school prom was the worst night of David's life, and twenty years later, he's unable to get over high school. But given the tragic circumstances of that night, who could? There are nine student deaths at Stanton High School every year. Surviving senior year has never been so stressful. In the 1980's, crime, gangs, and violence, have taken over New York City, making life a challenge for any student. The story follows David from the first day of his senior year, all the way to graduation. Doubts, a lack of direction, and regret are weighing heavily on his mind. He is a musical prodigy confused about college, life, and career choices. He can't trust his classmates at his ultra-competitive high school, where the goal is Harvard (no matter who gets hurt in the process.) Delancey is the girl of his dreams, but she is out of his league. The SATS, choices for college, school dances, and the prom, all start to overwhelm David. A fellow student, obsessed with the metaphysical world, befriends David and creates a doorway into a supernatural world where must give the musical performance of his life in order to win back the girl of his dreams. An unforeseen plot twist leads the reader to a thrilling and suspenseful ending. Worlds Apart is an urban retelling of the the Greek Myth of Orpheus and Eurydice.
One Reviewer Notes:
Worlds Apart by Luke Loaghan is a story that is filled with realistic issues that is happening right now in our society. Although this novel takes place in New York City during the 1980s, readers can definitely relate to David's life because of the gang issues, teen suicide epidemic, not fitting in at school, and the burden of taking care of his mother. I definitely appreciated the interesting incorporation of Orpheus and Eurydice. If you're a fan of Greek myths, you should definitely read this book.

About the Author
The inspiration for Worlds Apart arrived shortly after Luke Loaghan attended his 20 year high school renunion. He was fascinated by the people who never got over high school. "It was as if high school was a major tragic event in the lives of so many former classmates." At the same time, Luke was intrigued by today's high school students and how they deal with similar issues that faced high school students in the 1980's. College, confusion, gangs, insecurities, sex, friendships, and the prom are still more or less the same intense issues that faced kids decades ago. Luke Loaghan wrote news articles in high school and college. Worlds Apart is his first novel. He is an entreprenuer and lives in Long Island, NY.
