Kindle Nation Daily Free Book Alert, Saturday, April 9: FUBU founder Daymond John’s Display of Power is a remarkable read for all, plus … The Twiller by David Derrico (Today’s Sponsor)

This morning’s latest addition to our 250+ Free Book Alert listings is more than how the fashion world was turned inside out by FUBU. It’s a lesson on how to overcome obstacles in life and how to unleash your latent talents to make your dreams come true….

But first, a word from … Today’s Sponsor

Fun, puns, and social satire…in a professional quality indie”

Hapless hero Ian Harebungler is kidnapped by the Twiller, whose bravery is somewhat overshadowed by its uncanny resemblance to a floating yellow marshmallow with big eyes. His bizarre trip around the Universe leaves all of us wondering how or if he is going to get home…

“If you are looking for a light and airy entertainment, a popcorn book with an intergalactic setting, The Twiller is a button-pusher that will keep you smiling.”
-Bufo Calvin’s I Love My Kindle blog

 The Twiller
by David Derrico
4.1 out of 5 stars   8 Reviews

Don’t have a Kindle? Get yours here.

Here’s the set-up:

Ian Harebungler, our hapless hero, just can’t catch a break. First, the deli ran out of his favorite cucumber sandwiches. Then he left the gas on at home. But the lowlight was being abducted from his front yard by a particularly ill-mannered alien, one who apparently doesn’t believe in anesthetic, no less. Fortunately, Ian is saved by an unlikely ally: the Twiller, whose bravery is somewhat overshadowed by its uncanny resemblance to a floating yellow marshmallow with big eyes.

The Twiller follows the adventures of Ian and his newfound companion as they are whisked around the Universe, and Ian learns how difficult it can be to find his way home to a backwater planet called “Earth.” Along the way, Ian must survive the traffic of El Leigh, the enthusiastic protestors of Bez Erkeley, and rampaging politicians in the city of WMD. Even worse, he must contend with exorbitant prices in the city of York, endure the heat and crazy drivers in Fleur Ida, and struggle to escape the small planet of “Huh? Why E?” before he contracts island fever. Astute readers might pick up on subtle correlations to real places here on Earth, but my lawyers have reminded me to state that such resemblances are purely coincidental.

As it starts to dawn on Ian that the bizarre planets he visits suffer from many of the same problems, comical situations, and inane rules all too familiar to him, he stumbles upon an important secret that gives his quest to return home added urgency. Can Ian make it home? Will he arrive in time to prevent a terrible catastrophe? And can he find a flight without a Saturday night stopover? The answer lies with the Twiller…

What the Reviewers Say
“What is a Twiller? Well, it’s a small, yellow being resembling a marshmallow that floats, but doesn’t say much aside from, “Twill.” It’s from some place other than Earth, and it has made a friend–a hapless American named Ian, who has been snatched from the mundane comforts of his home world and thrust into the dangerous, and often hilarious, rat race that is the Universe. On his journey, Ian encounters places that seem eerily familiar.

“No matter how far away from home Ian gets, the more things stay the same, and the better his cell phone reception seems to get. Author David Derrico follows up on his more serious space epics ( Right Ascension and Declination) with a sci-fi comedy of that is fun and funny from start to finish.”
–Jay Allbritton

“How much can one find oneself caring about a title character described as a big yellow marshmallow with eyes? Well, if it’s the Twiller, it doesn’t matter what he looks like, the humor that supports was powerful enough to make me almost miss my subway stop. Even though the Twiller is the title character of the book, Ian Harbungler is the main character. Abducted by aliens, Ian finds himself stranded on a series of worlds that should seem somewhat familiar but skewed, with the above mentioned yellow marshmallow as faithful companion.”
–Scarlet

About the Author

David Derrico was born just north of Miami, Florida, and developed his appreciation for complex moral issues while receiving a degree in philosophy from the University of Florida in Gainesville. He wrote his first novel, Right Ascension, before attending law school at the University of California, Berkeley School of Law (Boalt Hall). Right Ascension was first published by Bookbooters Press in 2000, and garnered its inaugural eBook of the Year Award.

Derrico wrote his second novel, Declination, during law school, while he was probably supposed to be studying. Nonetheless, he graduated, passed the California Bar Exam, and worked as an attorney at a large, international law firm in Los Angeles for several years. While practicing law (all that practice actually made him pretty good at it), he managed to write some short stories and start work on his third novel, The Twiller.

Recently, Derrico retired from his “day job” as a big-firm attorney and moved back to South Florida, where he finished that next novel. The Twiller follows the (mis)adventures of an unlikely hero and his unique companion on a comic romp around the galaxy. Derrico maintains a website with reviews, excerpts, current news, a blog, and purchasing information for all of his novels and other works at www.davidderrico.com.

Lindsay Buroker and her 18-year-old heroine Kali McAlister weave Steampunk novella magic in Flash Gold – Just 99 cents on Kindle for the perfect weekend read!

Here’s the set-up for Flash Gold by Lindsay Buroker:

18-year-old Kali McAlister enters her steam-powered “dogless sled” in a race to win the $1000 prize and escape the Yukon  forever. But fortune seekers and airship pirates are stalking her for the secret to flash gold, her late father’s alchemical masterpiece.

With her modified rifle and a pocketful of home-made smoke bombs, Kali wouldn’t normally hide from a confrontation, but taking on a whole airship single-handedly is a daunting task. Unfortunately, the other racers won’t assist her–they’re too busy scheming ways to sabotage her unorthodox sled.

When a sword-slinging stranger shows up, wanting to hire on as her protector, she’s sure he has ulterior motives, but he’s the only one interested in helping her. The question is…why?

An 18,000-word (80 page) novella

From Reviewer Amber Miller:

Though it’s a stand alone adventure that takes place over a 3 day dog sled race, it feels like the pilot of a television series in that I could see it setting up lots of future adventures. The flash gold especially is more introduced than explored in full here, and I am curious to learn more about it as well as the background of the two main characters.

The main female lead, Kali, is smart and tough while still being vulnerable and easy to identify with. I like that the story opens with her tinkering on her steam sled, one of her many inventions, and she’s holding a wrench and covered in grease when our mysterious stranger (Cedar) walks in. My kind of lady.

The story was fast-paced with enough going on to keep my interest. I think steampunk fans will find enough steam-ish inventions to satisfy them, though I’ve noticed the author isn’t one to throw in a lot of extraneous gadgets and gizmos just to add steampunk flair.

I’m tagging this young adult since the main character is eighteen, and there’s nothing too racy in the story, but I liked it fine as an adult reader too. A fun fantasy adventure in a setting that will be familiar to those who read Jack London as kids.

I’ve been writing fantasy novels and short stories since I was seven. I’ve been finishing them since… well, that’s a more recent development.

I’m a professional blogger for my day job, and I live in the Seattle area (“area” is code for ‘I couldn’t afford a house within twenty miles of the city limits and my neighbors have alpacas’). I have two vizslas who are as spoiled as most people’s kids. Occasionally they let me leave the house to play tennis, go to the coffee shop, or take a yoga class.

My “Goblin Brothers” short stories are available on Amazon, and the first novel featuring those characters will be out in 2011. I have two more fantasy novels coming for the Kindle. Check back!

An absolute joy to read!

Here’s the set-up:

On April 30th, Rudolf Kerkhoven and Daniel Pitts will be releasing a brand new choose-your-own-adventure style ebook, The Redemption of Mr. Sturlubok (which will also be the KND daily sponsor).  In anticipation of this, they are offering a special edition of their original choose-your-own-adventure, The Adventures of Whatley Tupper for only 99 cents until April 15th.

The Adventures of Whatley Tupper follows a lowly janitor through a labyrinthine web of increasingly ridiculous and hilarious outcomes.  Will he tame the troglodyte murderer living in the disused network of campus tunnels? Will he join forces with the Denny’s night manager to counter a renegade group of custodians? Will he inadvertently travel into a parallel universe that sounds suspiciously similar to another plot-line? Will he journey to Honduras to reunite with his deported love? Will he suffer amnesia and begin to question his own sexuality? Or will he turn out to be nothing more than a figment in the imagination of his idol, Tom Selleck?  The choice is entirely up to you…

However, this new edition of The Adventures of Whatley Tupper also includes a 16 000 word fully interactive preview of The Redemption of Mr. Sturlubok, which follows a high-strung, loose cannon vice principal in an elementary school.  It has a little bit more of everything that made The Adventures of Whatley Tupper such an original and absurd guilty pleasure.

What the Reviewers Say
“Lots of strange stuff happening, some wildly divergent threads, and a healthy dose of WTF keep this ebook interesting even after multiple reads.  Will this be the next big trend in ebooks? I sure hope so.”
–J.A. Konrath

“Whatley Tupper is representative of the boundless creativity, raw energy, and just plain sheer fun and entertainment that independent authors are capable of and deserve recognition for.”
–Digital Spotlight Fiction Review

“A “choose-your-own-adventure” for adults, “The Adventures of Whatley Tupper” is a riot…  The stories ranged from silly to downright ridiculous, but I was thoroughly entertained the entire way through.”
–Motherlode

“I think that is why I ultimately enjoyed The Adventures of Whatley Tupper–because it was super weird…  For hours of disgustingly ridiculous fun, the book is a great price.”
–Kate the Book Buff

About the Author

Rudolf Kerkhoven was born in the midst of a ravaging Yukon winter, the product of Dutch immigrants who took a wrong turn and ended up in the far, far north. Here, in this unforgiving environment, where the extreme cold and endless winters show no relent, Rudolf became the man he is today, forged by these brutal elements, far from the excesses of modern society.

At the age of 0.5 he moved south, first to the Canadian prairies and eventually to the Vancouver area of British Columbia where he currently resides in a comfortable 2-bedroom townhouse.

Author Lucy Kevin has a knack for nostalgically whisking women back to their Twenties. Take the trip right now with a free sample of our eBook of the day, Falling Fast

Here’s the set-up for Falling Fast by Lucy Kevin:

When Alexa is sent by a magazine to be an undercover contestant on the reality TV series “Falling For Mr. Right” she assumes the worst part of the assignment will be having to act like a brainless bimbo to win the affection of an arrogant guy out looking for his 15 minutes of fame. Color her shocked when it turns out not only are several of her fellow contestants intelligent, funny women…but Brandon – aka Mr. Right – isn’t at all the kind of guy she thought he’d be.

What’s Alexa supposed to do when instead of digging up dirt for her cover story, she finds herself falling way too fast for the guy she’s supposed to tear apart in her first big feature story?

About the Author:

Lucy Kevin is also the author of SEATTLE GIRL (A young adult romance about love, sex…and my really big mouth) and two other books in the Kindle Store. She loves to read everything from teen fiction to chick lit to romance, especially Meg Cabot, Susan Mallery, Sophie Kinsella, Nora Roberts, and Ally Carter.

Visit the author on the web at  http://lucykevin.blogspot.com/

In lieu of the reviews sure to come for Falling Fast, look at what 17 reviewers have said of Kevin’s other work:

Seattle Girl was a funny and realistic book, which took me back to my twenties, where I sometimes felt like everything was not going to plan and nothing would work out right, but looking back, it was I time that I would never forget or regret. The character of Georgia is a character that I feel many women, young and older (like me) can relate too and taking the journey with her was entertaining and interesting.

Really enjoyed the book. Kept me interested throughout and was riveting. I could relate to the main character and enjoyed her little journey. Would definitely recommend for any chick-lit fans!

Seattle Girl was a fun and real easy read! For me gets to the point that I get sad that the story is getting to an end, it’s really that good. Most of all, what I really loved about this book is the friendship that is being presented in Georgia, Diane & Seth. Love It! Looking forward to Lucy’s other two books.

Seattle Girl was entertaining from start to finish. The main character, Georgia, is easy to relate to and so much like I was in my early 20’s that sometimes I felt I was reading my autobiography. Fun, fast-paced, and thoroughly enjoyable! I can’t wait to read something else by Lucy Kevin…..a delightful treat all the way around.

Seattle Girl was very entertaining. Once I got started, I couldn’t put it down. The main characters are easy to love! I would highly recommend reading this book…it’s great for reading on the beach or while walking on the treadmill!
