“A soft-spoken yet resounding reminder of the power plays tied to religion… Ricks’ voice is true, and her prose has a poised confidence missing from the repertoires of many established authors.” Booklist Magazine
Here’s the set-up:
What would you do if your Mormon stepdad pinned you down and tried to cast Satan out of you? For thirteen-year-old Ingrid, the answer is simple: RUN.
Hippie Boy: A Girl’s Story is a gripping memoir about a feisty teenage girl who escapes her abusive Mormon stepfather and suffocating religious home life by joining her dad on the road as a tool-selling vagabond – until his arrest forces her to take charge of her life.
What Others are Saying:

  • “Ingrid Ricks has shined a light on American Mormonism no less important than the light Kathryn Stockett shined on the degradation of black maids in “The Help.” Hippie Boy” is for anyone who has ever felt left out, alone, bereft, bewildered, betrayed…in other words, everyone.” —  Libby Maxey , Pastor, Tennessee
  • “When Ingrid describes life on the road with Dad, I was reminded of a movie I saw in the 80’s staring Ryan O’Neil and his daughter Tatum O’Neil called “Paper Moon”…I would recommend this book to anyone! –Michelle C.
  • “I gave this book to a friend of mine because I was curious if my reaction to it was normal. Why did I, a man in my forties, relate so strongly to this young girl who I had absolutely nothing in common with? Paul, in his fifties, read it in two sittings and loved it as much as I did. No matter who you are, you won’t be able to put the book down until you find out if this indomitable spirit gets her night in a Holiday Inn, a promised gift from her loving but struggling father, support from her troubled mother, and freedom from her dirt bag stepfather who smells like old meat.”  –J Craig“
  • I chose this book because it was a good price to try out my new Kindle, and the premise seemed interesting enough. I did not expect to be totally hooked in to the story. I planned to read this book over several days of commutes, starting on Monday. I was so curious about (and concerned for!) the young protagonist that I devoted Tuesday evening to finishing the last 30% because I couldn’t wait until Wednesday morning.” – Michelle Mann
  • “Some people are great storytellers, and some people have a great story to tell. Ingrid Ricks is both. I’d recommend this book to just about anyone: adults, adolescents, armchair travelers, those who had a difficult childhood and those who didn’t, people who’ve been stuck in one place most of their lives, and people who can’t stay tied down.” — Alysa Salzberg, Editor, Bequile, France
  • “Hippie Boy brought me back to the Judy Blume books of my teenage years, though it is still a very grownup story.  If you like coming-of-age stories, tales about complicated but loving relationships between fathers and daughters, or relating to a child who knows she is different but can’t do anything about it until she is grown, then this is the book for you.” – Betsy Talbot, Founder, Married with Luggage

I wasnt sure how I would like a book centered on a cast of older characters, however, this novel was splendid! The twist and turns, and all the possible endings made this novel hard to stop reading. I would definitely recommend others to read if they enjoy witty, thrill-thicked artistry.
--Amazon Reviewer
Here's the set-up:
Why would spry senior Bob Weiderley suddenly fall into a coma after winning a game of Bingo? After all, he was the most physically fit of all the men at the Happy Haven Assisted Living Facility—able to bend over to tie his own shoes and use the stairs rather than the elevator. It was just very suspicious. That’s why Essie Cobb and her friends and fellow residents--Opal, Marjorie, and Fay--decided to investigate. Was it possible that someone was out to get the friendly old gentleman? Maybe it was Violet, Happy Haven’s manager, trying to cover up her shady past. Or Sue, the activities director, whose behavior was strange to say the least. Maybe it was one of the three women who sat at Bob’s regular table in the dining room. Or the mysterious man who had recently sent Bob a startling letter. Essie Cobb is determined to find out—and she’s not going to let her age (90), her weak bladder, or her various infirmities hold her back. Welcome to Happy Haven. If you thought most elderly residents of assisted living facilities spent their days sitting in the sun watching television, you haven’t met senior sleuth Essie Cobb and her three detecting buddies. These four elderly ladies have curiosity and drive unusual for women in their 80’s and 90’s. They may not be able to get around as fast as youngsters in their 60’s, or navigate the Interstate or Interweb (or whatever that computer thing is called), but they can solve a mystery. And they’re starting with this one.
One Reviewer Notes:
I had the pleasure of reading `Bingoed' by Patricia Rockwell, a novel about a 90 year old super sleuth named Essie Cobb. Essie and her "partners in crime" suspect that foul play is involved when one of their fellow residents at Happy Haven Assisted Living Facility collapses and falls into a coma after winning at Bingo. The theories run rampant when spry Essie and her friends put their mind to solving this mystery. Mrs. Rockwell hit a homerun with `Bingoed'. The storyline will keep you coming back for more. This is definitely a mystery read that you don't want to miss. Curl up with a cozy blanket for this cozy read... Patricia Rockwell is a quick rising author, whose writing will captivate you. I look forward to reading more from her in the future. Don't miss out on the adventures that Essie Cobb and her quick witted friends "wheel" themselves into. This page turner will make you laugh out loud, as well as keep you guessing and waiting to see what will come next. I'm anticipating reading more about Essie's adventures.

Skye Savoy’s WAKING UP DEAD is our eBook of the Day at just $4.99 with 4.0 Stars on 1 Review, and Here’s a Free Sample!

Here’s the set-up for Skye Savoy’s Waking Up Dead, just $4.99 on Kindle:

Before death came to collect Ava Berry in the form of one mouth-watering fallen angel named Suriyel, she was a newly divorced, 51-year-old caterer with a passion for all things Elvis and Paula Deen. Thanks to Suriyel and his magic amulet, she’s now in the body of her 20-something niece who died on the same night. Ava’s hell-bent on catching a killer even if it means not being heaven-bound anymore.

Fending off a possessed dumpster and an Elvis impersonator while dealing with her deceased mother who’s back as her pimped-out, Hoverround®-riding, guardian angel, are a lot easier than keeping her heart away from Suriyel. The soul-collector risks being thrown back into the center of the earth so he can protect and teach Ava to use the powers of the amulet. Good thing, too, because she soon finds herself using it to save his life and what remains of her lineage.

From the reviewers:

Waking up Dead is a roll with the punches quirky tale full of funny anecdotes, tantalizing desires and an adventure of a lifetime…  Danielle, Reviewer for Coffee Time Romance & More

Sexy and funny read.  This book has it all- a hot fallen angel and a fiesty, mature heroine. The guardian angel reminds me of Vicki Lawrence’s character, “Mama.” It wasn’t the dark read I expected. It was great fun.  –  R.J. Hill

Syke Savoy began her creative writing at an early age in her hometown of Pensacola, Florida. The first award-winning story she wrote at the ripe age of fourteen involved the antics of a klutzy Driver’s Ed student named Louise. Upon embarking on her career in marketing, her writing took a turn toward the professional. Her unquenchable thirst to complete a novel started during her pregnancy with her daughter.

Skye now calls Mississippi home. She spends her time making up stories about fairies for her daughter and stories about where those new shoes came from for her husband. She remains active being stereotyped as a dumb blonde in a murder mystery dinner theatre troupe for which she’s written several plays. Currently, Skye is working on a third paranormal novel.

And here, in the comfort of your own browser, is your free sample of WAKING UP DEAD by Skye Savoy:

Here’s the set-up:

A handshake between strangers has never held so much promise for discovery.

When Stephen Wilson meets Lisa Morgan at his new school in Sloutenville, it is the simple act of extending his hand in greeting that flips both of their worlds upside-down. With the gesture, both discover that in some way they are connected, and that they share the ability to manipulate the elements, fire and water. Though their abilities vary, they share the gift of telepathy allowing them to communicate without words, which creates a bond between them stronger than either had expected.

As the two begin to spend more and more time together David, Lisa’s ex, becomes wild with jealousy, launching multiple attacks on Lisa. In the fight against the dangers that await them around every corner, Stephen and Lisa soon discover that they are up against much greater odds than they had originally known, and that their struggles are far from over.

From the reviewers:

“I can’t wait to read what happens to Stephen and Lisa, the love they have for each other tells me that something great is to come. Well done Kelvin!” – Amanda (Goodreads5 Stars
“The story itself is so powerful and all the character’s uniqueness adds up to the greatness of the book. the theme of the story is a new intake on mystery and magic or maybe sci-fi. a one-stop-read book and really remarkable and wonderful, LS:The Beginning leads you to a world of magic, mystery, and romance” – avry15(Librarything5 stars
“Stephen and Lisa are college kids who possess the ability to create the two elements, water and fire, respectively.
To be honest, I had to read this book for the second time to get a glimpse of its story line. It seemed lame at first, but when I read it the second time, I was like… OMG. This writer has something in store for his readers. I mean, it’s hard to pinpoint what exactly is going on.

I would have loved to expatiate but I don’t want to add spoilers. It’s really a good read. There’s romance, jealousy, cheat, and action. I really like this adventure, and can’t wait to read the next in the series”  – Sandra(Goodreads) 5 Stars

“I enjoyed LS: The Beginning. it is a book even young teens might enjoy. It is well written. The characters are good; descriptions are great. I look forward to reading more of this series.”- Hannah Hummel (Smashwords) 5 starsWhat a sweet whimsical book. This is an old fashioned love story the likes of which I have not read in years. Its also a paranormal YA / New Adult read. Although the two main characters Stephen and Lisa have super powers. The one commands over fire the other ice. It is the love story that mostly sticks with me. The writing is excellent. Pacing is fine and the author goes through a lot of trouble building character. The book is written from a male point of view. – Wanda (Smashwords) 5 stars

What a delightfully, humorous love story. The interactions between Victor and Remmie, are full of sass. The scenes with Remmie's cats and felinophobia Victor are hysterical, and the whole story makes you want it to keep going. I was hoping it could go on longer, it was that good. Kindle Nation Daily Bargain Book Alert: Rebecca Forster’s KEEPING COUNSEL is our eBook of the Day at just $2.99, with 4.3 Stars on 12 Reviews, and Here’s a Free Sample!

Here’s the set-up for Rebecca Forster’s Keeping Counsel, just $2.99 on Kindle:

New Mexico attorney Tara Linley has always believed in the power and fairness of the law. All that changes when she takes on her best friend’s lover as a client. It is only after she reluctantly agrees to represent him that Tara discovers the real reason Bill Hamilton has sought her out – and the shocking crime he has committed.

Tara wants to warn her friend that her life might be in danger, but is bound by attorney-client privilege. Caught in a web of escalating circumstances that threatens not only her professional reputation but her life, Tara soon finds herself at the mercy of her dangerously unstable client…a man who is growing more dangerous every day.

From the reviewers:

Page-turning legal thriller with a true moral center. As an attorney, I’ve read a lot of legal thrillers, and R.A.Forster’s KEEPING COUNSEL ranks with the best. This story moves. From the outset, we are pulled into the moral dilemma faced by Tara Linley, the lawyer who meets her best friend’s new lover only to find herself ensnared by this charming man into defending him against criminal prosecution for a horrifying murder.  Surely her best friend’s safety is more important than some technical vow [lawyer-client privilege] she took when she was sworn in as a lawyer. But how can she live with herself if she doesn’t honor the system she has sworn to uphold?  –  nwmd85

Intense legal thriller. My husband recommended this book and I couldn’t put it down. This is a well paced legal thriller with a villian who stayed with me long after I stopped reading. Throughout the book I couldn’t figure out if he was crazy or just evil, but either way he was really creepy.  –  Carole

Tense, psychological/legal thriller.  If the prologue doesn’t suck you in, you shouldn’t be reading this genre. This is an incredible psychological/legal thriller that kept me anxiously turning pages late into the night. The title refers to the attorney-client privilege of secrecy and the charming, yet deadly protagonist in Keeping Counsel knows how to use it  –  Bruce R. Raterink

I marketed a world-class spa when it was still called a gym and did business in China before there were western toilettes at the Great Wall. Then I wrote a book on a crazy dare and found my passion.

Now, I am a USA Today best selling author with more than 20 books to my name – and if you ask me where all those words came from I’d be hard pressed to tell you. All I know is that I wake up with a story in my head and go to bed the same way.

My specialty is legal thrillers and The Witness Series, featuring my beach-rat, volleyball playing attorney Josie Bates and her teenage ward Hannah, have really captured readers’ imaginations. But I also like to stretch the thirller genre a bit. Before Her Eyes, for instance, has a fantasy overlay on a murder mystery that I really found intriguing. Wilde’s Gamble is a romantic suspense.

I teach at UCLA Writers Program and work with The Young Writers Conference, a program that helps motivate middle school children to explore the power of words. I think I am particularly drawn to kids and writing because both my sons have always had a passion for it. Eric is a playwright and Alex is in film.

When I’m not writing I’m traveling, on a tennis court, working a sewing machine or reading. Thank you so much for taking a look at my author page. You can find out more about me, my travels and my work-in-progress at www.rebeccaforster.com
