4.8 stars – 57 Reviews
Text-to-Speech and Lending: Enabled
Here’s the set-up:

“All things are composed of patterns…” And within the pattern of the realm of Alorin, three strands must cross:

In Alorin…three hundred years after the genocidal Adept Wars, the realm is dying, and the blessed Adept race dies with it. One man holds the secret to reverting this decline: Bjorn van Gelderan, a dangerous and enigmatic man whose shocking betrayal three centuries past earned him a traitor’s brand. It is the Adept Vestal Raine D’Lacourte’s mission to learn what Bjorn knows in the hope of salvaging his race. But first he’ll have to find him…

In the kingdom of Dannym…the young Prince Ean val Lorian faces a tenuous future as the last living heir to the coveted Eagle Throne. When his blood-brother is slain during a failed assassination, Ean embarks on a desperate hunt for the man responsible. Yet his advisors have their own agendas, and his quest for vengeance leads him ever deeper into a sinuous plot masterminded by a mysterious and powerful man, the one they call First Lord…

In the Nadori desert…tormented by the missing pieces of his life, a soldier named Trell heads off to uncover the truth of his shadowed past. But when disaster places him in the debt of Wildlings sworn to the First Lord, Trell begins to suspect a deadlier, darker secret motivating them.

Reviews

“A fantastic read…well written and descriptive… Melissa McPhail is an extremely talented writer.”   —Reviewed by Charline Ratcliff for RebeccasReads

“This is a richly imagined piece of work…the characters are engaging, and McPhail manages to do some very original things, which is often difficult in fantasy, given that so much work in the genre relies on Tolkienian stereotypes….some strong work here.”  —Writer’s Digest Self-Published Book Awards
“A well thought-out story with many layers…the characters are all interconnected…and the underlying mysteries that tie everything together are well hidden and thoroughly disguised.” —Reviewed by Marty Shaw for Reader Views

Here's the set-up:
Detective Connie Giannelli's life has been torn apart several times. First when her mother died and then years later when she found out her Uncle Dominic was in the mob. Her life is about to be shredded again, and this time it could destroy her.

Connie’s love of family and her badge are both threatened when an undercover drug bust leaves two cops dead and the drugs missing. Internal Affairs is looking for any excuse to take her badge, but she’s not worried about them finding the missing drugs—her secrets could prove to be far worse.

Now Connie’s racing against the clock to figure out who killed her partners and took the drugs—dirty cops or Uncle Dominic’s friends. And she has to do it before IA pins the whole damn thing on her.
One Reviewer Notes:
Giacomo Giammatteo moves easily between Connie's experiences, narrated in the first person, and a third-person narrative style. One might think this would confuse the plot, but it does not: A Bullet for Carlos moves along swiftly, and nothing is lost in tense or translation. The result is a riveting murder mystery that concurrently reveals absorbing interactions between characters and killer alike. Any murder mystery and detective story fan will find this an intriguing story filled with satisfyingly unexpected twists and turns and plenty of psychological insights.

About the Author
I live in Texas now, but I grew up in Cleland Heights, a mixed ethnic neighborhood in Wilmington, Delaware that sat on the fringes of the Italian, Irish and Polish neighborhoods. The main characters of Murder Takes Time grew up in Cleland Heights and many of the scenes in the book were taken from real-life experiences.

Somehow I survived the transition to adulthood, but when my kids were young I left the Northeast and settled in Texas, where my wife suggested we get a few animals. I should have known better; we now have a full-blown animal sanctuary with rescues from all over. At last count we had 41 animals--12 dogs, a horse, a three-legged cat and 26 pigs.

Oh, and one crazy--and very large--wild boar, who takes walks with me every day and happens to also be my best buddy.

Since this is a bio some of you might wonder what I do. By day I am a headhunter, scouring the country for top talent to fill jobs in the biotech and medical device industry. In the evening I help my wife tend the animals, and at night--late at night--I turn into a writer. Boys. Mean girls. Self-image. Divorces. Cannibals in Scotland.
These are just a few of the things Rebecca Lorenton worries about on a daily basis. She’s your average teenage girl–a little too average, in her opinion. She revels in the beauty and excitement of the city, and even meets a boy with an adorable accent who makes her cheeks turn pinker than her mom’s favorite lipstick. However, danger lurks around the corner, and Rebecca’s perfect trip may well turn out to be a perfect nightmare. This YA novel details the hilarious, sarcastic musings and daily life of a teenage girl, but it also sheds light on the importance of overcoming insecurities and fear. She’s as skilled at both as an infant trying to eat with a fork. Carolyn’s suburban upbringing and genuine compassion for people who don’t fit effortlessly into society are no match for weapon-wielding, struggling students, drug-using colleagues, and a wicked principal.

Meanwhile, her budding relationship with a mystery man is thwarted by his gaggle of eccentric sisters. Carolyn depends on her friends to get her through the hard times, but with poverty-stricken children at her feet and a wealthy man at her side, she must define who she is. Here’s the set-up:
Gerald Hammond is the exception to the rule; an honourable spy, whose lofty principles have brought him nothing but loneliness and isolation. Catherine Schmidt is the stunning young daughter of an assassinated spymaster, whose murderous quest for vengeance has left her at the mercy of the infamous Head of Soviet State Security.
On a covert operation, in Soviet-occupied Germany, Hammond has no knowledge of the unseen forces that sponsor and oppose his mission. He only knows that he must somehow save her to save himself, but, as ever-more disturbing revelations come to light, begins to wonder which poses the greater threat; the enemy he runs from, or the friend he runs to?

Set against a factual background of government conspiracy, and one of the most audacious espionage coups in history, the Folks at Fifty-Eight is a beautifully-paced tale of seduction, betrayal, blackmail, and murder that blurs the boundaries between fact and fiction.
