Breathtaking action and very cinematic. I would KILL to see this made into a movie. The writing is tight and evocative. Baleron is a great main character, conflicted but noble. The villains are terrifying. Really a wonderful epic fantasy all around, layered with darkness. Definitely fantasy for adults.

Here's the set-up:
When a dark power rises, only a doomed prince can stand against it.

“The War of the Black Tower: Book One" is the first volume of a dark, action-packed epic fantasy trilogy like no other. Imagine the reach of J.R.R. Tolkien, the propulsive action of Robert E. Howard and the modern grit of George R. R. Martin, and you'll have some idea of the thrills awaiting you in "The War of the Black Tower" epic fantasy series.

Baleron is the youngest son of the king of Havensrike, a land eternally at war with the dark empire of Oslog to the south. Ruled by the dark lord Gilgaroth, the legions of Oslog have continually striven to tear down the works of man and sweep the world in shadow. For eons they have awaited their dark lord's Chosen One, he who will be appointed by Gilgaroth to usher in the next age of shadow.

That time is now. Baleron, though a womanizer and rogue, the black sheep of the royal family one step from being kicked out of the castle, is loyal to the kingdoms of the north and wants only to redeem himself in his father's eyes. But as Baleron leads his sister Rolenya's wedding party through the treacherous Aragst Mountains, they're set upon by the dark powers, and the thralls of the Dark Lord call out to Baleron in worship, calling him the Chosen One.

This is just the beginning of Baleron's epic journey of action, romance, wonder and discovery in "War of the Black Tower: An Epic Fantasy". He'll know battle, hardship, the enmity of a terrible dragon, and all the terror of Oslog before he can find out what it means to be the Chosen One of Gilgaroth, and what it takes to throw off his dark destiny.
One Reviewer Notes:
As someone who has read and re-read Tolkien stories for years, I was instantly drawn to this book. Baleron is a debonair rapscallion but he does love his family. I could just see the precarious glint in his eyes as he did things that were mischievous including his womanizing. He was instantly my favorite character. Even when I found out he had some serious issues brewing, I felt he would find a way to do the right thing. There is a good amount of drama and suspense throughout and I was thoroughly immersed within a few minutes. This is a fast paced read- nothing drags... I could see this book being made into a movie as it has all the right elements.

Spirit Walker: Book One of the Serpent Catch Series
4.0 stars – 3 Reviews
Text-to-Speech and Lending: Enabled

Here’s the set-up:

Long ago Earth’s paleobiologists established the planet Anee as a vast storehouse of extinct species, each continent home to life forms of a different era. For a thousand years the starfarers’ great sea serpents formed a wall of teeth and flesh that protected Smilodon Bay from the ravaging dinosaurs that swam across the ocean from Hotland. Now the serpents are gone and Anee is being ravaged by tyranny, war and slavery.

Tull, son to a human father and a Neanderthal mother, feels doomed to toil his life away as a common field hand, but his mission becomes clear when he takes action to save his homeland. Tull must seek a distant river in the slave nation of Craal, where young serpents can be found. Legend has it that Adjonai, the Neanderthal god of terror, is king of Craal. Yet only by facing this dark enemy can Tull hope to bring home his serpent catch alive.

This is the first installment of a four part series. Originally published under the name “Dave Wolverton.”

One Reviewer Notes:
Author Mark Souza does an exceptional job turning what could've been "just another zombie book" into an original young adult novel. As someone who has been bullied for being "different," I found myself relating to Rex, and I am confident that others will as well. Readers who enjoyed Patrick Frievald's Twice Shy will want to get their hands on this book ASAP. It is the first book I've read by Souza but it will definitely not be the last.
