The storyline is as complex as it is sinister. There is evil personified, treachery, deceit, greed and murder. There is also the totally human need for family and love--the love of another and the love FOR another.

Here's the set-up:
This award-winning novel is a captivating and profoundly relevant story about the struggles of a homeless pregnant teenager, set against a backdrop of murder and deceit. The novel won the 2011 Eric Hoffer Award in the Young Adult book category. It was also named a Finalist in the Popular Fiction category of the 2010 National Indie Excellence Book Awards. Midwest Book Review says, "'Tamara’s Child' is a thought provoking and heartstring jerking tale that should not be passed up.”

Tamara Ames is sixteen years old, pregnant, and on her own when she arrives in the small lumber town of Fir Valley, Oregon, determined to make a new and better life for herself and her child. And when she falls victim to a diabolical scheme to steal her newborn baby from her, she is not about to give her child up without a fight, even if she has to take on the wealthiest and most powerful family in the county. But is Tamara fighting against her child's own best interests? Only she can decide. And it's a decision that she--and her child--will have to live with for the rest of their lives.

In "Tamara's Child," B K Mayo weaves from sensuous detail a storyline as gritty and complex as life itself. Loss, treachery, greed, even murder play roles in this riveting tale. But in the end, it is the redemptive value of unconditional love that drives the pivotal action of the novel. One part suspense, one part drama, and wholly satisfying, "Tamara's Child" plumbs the psyche of a dynamic cast of characters, some motivated by self-interest, some by self-sacrifice, some by self-doubt, but all clinging to the hope that they can ultimately wring from life the happiness and fulfillment that has thus far been denied them.
One Reviewer Notes:
Love is a powerful thing, but how to apply it is the real problem. "Tamara's Child" tells the story of a teenage mother, who faced with her new child, wants to do everything she can to protect it and care for it. When plans are put in place to separate her from her child, Tamara is left asking if resisting is really the best thing for her and her child. "Tamara's Child" is a thought provoking and heart string jerking tale that should not be passed up.

Don’t have a Kindle? Get yours here.
Here’s the set-up:

**This collection contains every story from Attic Clowns Volume 1, Volume 2, Volume 3 and Volume 4.**

Bram Stoker Award nominee Jeremy C. Shipp spins 13 tales of horror and dark humor in this highly conceptual collection. Angels and demons, husbands and wives, tormented ghosts and an army of men made of soap–all of them trapped in attics of the mind, attics of heaven or hell, the attics we make for ourselves or with which we ensnare others.

Meet a paranoid astronaut whose jealousy drives him to extremes beyond murder…a miniature circus spawned from the mind of a woman with too much control…the underling demon Globcow who desires redemption even more than the taste of human feet…

Men, women, children, and things beyond imagination all interconnect in ATTIC CLOWNS, where laughter is only the prelude to the bizarre and terrible.

The stories include:
Spider Clowns from Planet X
Microcircus
Princess
Dust Bunnies
Don’t Laugh
Blister
A Quivering Gray Fog
The Ascension of Globcow the Foot Eater
Little Mouse
Soapmen
The Glass Box
The Hobo
Giggles

From the reviewers:

“Jeremy C. Shipp’s boldness, daring, originality, and sheer smarts make him one of the most vital younger writers who have colonized horror literature in the past decade. Shipp’s modernist clarity, plus his willingness to risk damn near everything, put him up at the head of the pack with the very best.” –Peter Straub, author of Ghost Story

“Shipp’s clear, insistent voice pulls you down into the rabbit hole and doesn’t let go.”  –Jack Ketchum, author of The Girl Next Door

Kindle Nation Daily Bargain Book Alert: Kathy Lynn Harris’ BLUE STRAGGLER is Our eBook of the Day, Just $2.99, With 4.9 Stars on 45 Reviews!

Here’s the set-up for Kathy Lynn Harris’ Blue Straggler, Just $2.99 on Kindle:

A blue straggler is a star that has an anomalous blue color and appears to be disconnected from those stars that surround it.

But this is not a story about astronomy.

Bailey Miller is “disconnected” from the cluster of her rural south Texas family. She has never quite fit in and now, in her early 30s, she finds herself struggling with inner turmoil and a series of bad choices in her life.

Bailey’s drinking too much (even for a member of her family), has a penchant to eat spoonfuls of Cool Whip, works in a job that bores her beyond description and can’t keep a relationship longer than it takes for milk to expire in her fridge.

Even with the help of her two outspoken friends, Texas lass Idamarie and her quirky college pal Rudy, she’s having a hard time.

So she packs up her Honda and heads out of Texas in search of herself and answers to secrets from her great-grandmother’s past. The novel takes readers on a journey from San Antonio, Texas, to a small mountain town in Colorado and back again, as Bailey uncovers not only the secrets of her great-grandmother’s life, but also some painful secrets of her own. All while finding love along the way.

If you have ever wondered why you got stuck with the family you did, what you are doing with your job and your life, or had a sudden desire to run off to the mountains, sit back and join Bailey for this laugh-out-loud, yet poignant ride.

If you have ever wondered why you got stuck with the family you did, what you are doing with your job and your life, or had a sudden desire to run off to the mountains, sit back and join Bailey for this laugh-out-loud, yet poignant ride.

From the reviewers:

“… The characters made me laugh, cry, and wish that the story went on forever.”

“… every single Texas reference Kathy Lynn Harris made was so descriptive that I knew exactly what she was talking about. I felt as if I was living the story.”

“… both thoughtful and laugh-out-loud funny! I also hope that the author is working on a sequel.”

“… I laughed till I cried, then cried till I laughed. This is one I will read over and over again.”

“… Ms. Harris ⚊ I’m ready for the next installment!”

I grew up in rural South Texas and come from people who work hard, love the land and know how to have a good time on a Saturday night. As a writer, I’m lucky to have been surrounded by exceptional characters throughout my life, many of whom have lived their lives exactly the way they wanted. The rest of the world could take `em or leave `em! I only hope that I have one ounce of the gumption they had.

In 2001, I made the move from Texas to the Colorado Rockies to focus on my writing and soak up All Things Mountain.

By day, I work for a relationship marketing agency. By night, I live in an authentic log cabin near the southernmost glacier in North America, at 10,500 feet above sea level, with my husband and son, plus two fairly untrainable golden retriever mixes.

Mountain lions, bears, foxes, coyotes and other high-country animals are our neighbors, and we wouldn’t have it any other way. It is here that I write — I’ve completed two novels and three children’s books. I have also published hundreds of magazine articles, poetry, short fiction and essays. My work has appeared in numerous published anthologies.

Over the years, I’ve come to realize that what connected my parents and grandparents to the hundreds of acres of ranchland my family owns in Texas is perhaps the same thing that connects me to these mountains. The land is alive under our feet; it is our foundation. The land will always, simply, be.

Trusting Evil

by Mary Leo
4.9 stars – 8 Reviews

Don’t have a Kindle? Get yours here.

Here’s the set-up:

In the summer of 1966, Richard Franklin Speck, a twenty-two year old Ordinary Seaman, waiting for a berth aboard a merchant ship, murdered eight student nurses inside a townhouse in South Chicago, shocking the surrounding hardworking, religious community to its very core.

Twenty years later, Carly Rocket and her business partner, Mike Holtzer, find themselves inside Stateville Correctional Facility hired to cast extras for a Hollywood movie. Unbeknownst to her, Speck is one of Stateville’s inmates. His infamous murders took place only blocks from her childhood home leaving her with deep emotional wounds. Discovering that Speck is enjoying his life behind bars, Carly is outraged and conspires with a guard to make a video tape of Speck’s uninhibited life in an attempt to change prison regulations. But it backfires, and suddenly Carly finds herself in danger of becoming Speck’s ninth victim.

From the reviewers:

Carly Rockett and her business partner and former boyfriend Mike Holtzer own a casting company for extras in movies. Their newest assignment is for a movie with Arnold Schwarzenegger being filmed at the Statesville Prison who’s most famous murderer, Richard Speck, is in residence.

In the summer of 1966, Carly met an intriguing German sailor, Richard Speck, who went on to slaughter eight student nurses near her home in South Chicago. At the time, Carly and her two best friends were obsessed with the Beatles and believed one of them was destined to marry one. They thought that their sailor knew the Beatles personally and would deliver their love letters. The scars left by Speck have surfaced for Carly when she sees how he lives in prison, how he has freedom, lovers and loves his life. Now her life is on course to make him pay and for the prison to be accountable to punish those who deserve it. Her obsession and use of alcohol will propel her to her own personal Hell.

This was a riveting read full of history, strength and struggle. Mary Leo who personally grew up just blocks from the townhouse where the nurses were killed, writes with a sense of ease and confidence about the times and facts. A true storyteller with a great grasp on detail and use of imagination that got me inside Carly’s mind and pain. As Carly’s life unfolds I found myself emphasizing with the real life scars of Speck’s victims’ families and how life must have been for them.  –  Publisher’s Weekly Reviewed by Michelle

Trusting Evil is a very different kind of suspense novel, a true original, revolving around the heinous crimes of one Richard Speck who tortured, raped and murdered 8 student nurses on July 14, 1966, in Chicago. Speck had Born to Raise Hell tattoed on his arm. All of that is true. Every word. And what is fictional in the novel rings true as well. This is a heartfelt, inspired novel written by Mary Leo, who lived in that time, very near to where it all happened.

Carly Rockett was a young girl, in love with Ringo Star and living the normal life of a teenager when the crimes occurred, and changed her life forever. She is haunted by the brutal murders throughout the rest of her childhood and into adulthood. She is traumatized by what she perceives as her own part in what happened. Only whiskey can fog the horrid memories, and not even then. She is obsessed by Richard Speck. Her life is spiralling downword fast. Carly works in the movie business, and one day finds herself filming a movie inside the very prison where Richard Franklin Speck, in all his ugliness, lives quite happily. Leo portrays with a chilling vividness scenes that make you want to look away, though you cannot.

The prose is fast moving, and as spare as Hemingway’s. The dialogue brilliant, the descriptions and sensory details, always just enough to pull the reader into the story and hold them fast until the last word. It’s more than that, though. It’s also a love story. I promise you, you won’t be able to put Trusting Evil down, and, like Carly, you’ll be haunted

Here's the set-up:
The Frenchman’s Beautiful Daughter. . . .
When adventurer Eben St. Claire’s horse is lamed in an accident, he is forced to seek refuge for the night in the isolated trading post where Henri Delacour lay dying. In a simple act of kindness, Eben helps the old man, who has fallen, back to his bed and brings him water to quench a terrible thirst. In Henri, Eben sees a mortal kinsman, staring Death in the eye. Henri, however, sees the young frontiersman as a bearded angel, the answer to his fevered prayers. More cunning than Eben imagines, the Frenchman lures him into striking a bargain that Eben will soon live to regret. . . a devil’s deal that will destroy his plans and alter the course of his life, even while it fattens his coffers. Henri has offered to pay Eben a thousand dollars in gold to escort his sweet and dutiful daughter to the East and see her settled, and since Eben is already headed in that direction, it surely can’t be that bad.

Diamond in the Rough. . . .
When Raven discovers that her father has given her into the protection of a bearded, buckskin-clad ruffian she is horrified, and anything but compliant. She fights the handsome stranger at every turn, and quickly proves that Henri’s promises of her being dutiful and sweet were blatant lies. She’s a hellcat, with a vernacular to rival any voyageur Eben knew during the Voyage of Great Discovery. Her father’s wishes win out, however temporarily, and she agrees to submit to Eben’s guardianship in order to give her father a sense of peace as he succumbs to his illness. In her moment of greatest despair, Raven finds unexpected solace in Eben’s strong arms. But when compassion turns to lust, Raven is appalled by her response to a man she’d vowed to hate. He’s admitted his intention of finding her a husband once they reach Pittsburgh, and to be under a man’s total control is the last thing she wants. But how can she escape? By drugging him senseless, and stealing his horse. Even during Raven’s brief break for freedom, she finds it impossible to forget Eben’s kiss, or the effect it had upon her. When at last they are reunited, their mutual attraction deepens, passions rage out of control, and as he climbs in a whorehouse window to claim her, Raven surrenders with a blissful sigh. Her descent into scandal is just beginning.

A House Full of Enemies. . . .
Giving her as a wife to another man is no longer an option, yet he isn’t offering marriage, either. And Raven will not pressure him, even as she discovers that she’s carrying his baby. If they are destined to be together, it must be because he loves and wants her, and not out of obligation. So, she keeps her secret and bides her time. But the ghosts of Eben’s past are gathering, intent on destruction: a traitorous friend, a scornful patriarch, and a jealous ex-lover who is murdered. All of the evidence points to Eben as the murderer. . . yet as he faces jail and a possible hanging, it is Raven’s life and that of their unborn child that hangs in the balance… and only he can save them.
