Here’s the set-up for Kathleen Shoop’s After the Fog, just $2.99 on Kindle:

It’s 1948 in the steel town of Donora, Pennsylvania, site of the infamous “killing smog.” Public health nurse, Rose Pavlesic, has risen above her orphaned upbringing and created a life that reflects everything she missed as a child. She’s even managed to keep her painful secrets hidden from her doting husband, loving children, and large extended family.

When a stagnant weather pattern traps poisonous mill gasses in the valley, neighbors grow sicker and Rose’s nursing obligations thrust her into conflict she never could have fathomed.

Consequences from her past collide with her present life, making her once clear decisions as gray as the suffocating smog.

As pressure mounts, Rose finds she’s not the only one harboring lies.

When the deadly fog finally clears, the loss of trust and faith leaves the Pavlesic family—and the whole town—splintered and shocked. With her new perspective, can Rose finally forgive herself and let her family’s healing begin?

Kathleen Shoop’s debut novel, The Last Letter, was such a an amazing story that I had very high expectations for her second novel, After the Fog — I was not disappointed – “lkm”

I found this book very enjoyable . Having grown up in and around industrial towns I could relate to the people and their conflicts over the balance of hazards and well being surrounding the industry . With out to much spoiler I found it romantic and inspiring. I give it another 5 stars. – “Readingcureall”

I stayed up late several nights because I could not wait to see what would happen next. I truly enjoyed this book and highly recommend it.

I came across the tragedy that occurred in Donora. This novel brought to life how devastating that incident was; it made history come to life. This is one of those books where the setting almost takes on character status. The fog and gritty air seem to pervade everything–even the character’s psyches. An enjoyable read that will leave you heartened when the air clears and Rose sees herself as she truly is. – Janice Palko

A great mix of historical drama and fiction will keep you turning the pages of this novel. While you bask in the sun this summer, I would highly recommend adding this to your beach bag as a compelling and interesting combination of facts and fiction. – BookNook

It is the story of a mill town suffocating in smog, but more than that it is the story of one family and the turmoil in their lives which just happens to coincide with the arrival of the deadly fog. Actually, it is the story of one woman, nurse Rose Pavlesic and her inner turmoil while dealing with her tragic past, dysfunctional family, and the even more dysfunctional families she deals with as a community nurse. – C. Hooper

Thank you for reading about me here and for purchasing my novel! I’m married with two children. I’ve been seriously writing for almost a decade although I dabbled much earlier than that! I’ve had short stories published in four Chicken Soup for the Soul books, am a regular contributor to a local magazine, Pittsburgh Parent, and have had essays in local newspapers as well.

I have a PhD in Reading Education and currently work as a Language Arts Coach at a school in Pittsburgh. I work with teachers and their students in grades k-8 and am lucky to learn something new from them every time I walk through their doors.

My first novel, The Last Letter (2011 IPPY Gold Medal–Regional Fiction, Midwest, 2011 Indie Excellence Finalist Award for Historical Fiction and Regional Fiction, 2011 International Book Awards Finalist for Historical Fiction and Best New Fiction), was a fascinating trip through history, punctuated with fictional characters and events. The idea for the story grew from my great-great grandmother’s letters (see My Dear Frank for the complete set of letters!) written during the year of her engagement to Frank Arthur. The beautiful letters are the inspiration for the novel, the seed from which The Last Letter’s characters and their voices grew.

I’ve also written women’s fiction (COMING SOON!) and have written another historical fiction novel (COMING A LITTLE LATER!) set in 1948 in a town not far from Oakmont, PA.

I’m considering revisiting my characters and setting of The Last Letter for a future book, but I hope readers will enjoy the fact I write about varied eras and places and that they will love each book for it’s unique setting and time.

Here’s the set-up:

Sooner or later, everyone will need a lawyer. When that time comes, this book will become the best investment you’ve ever made!

It’s a certainty that someday in the lives of us all, we’ll have the need for legal services. My guidebook provides the reader with the practical information they should have when that day arrives.

The concept is that the average person has been kept in the dark far too long about the truth of how lawyers operate and interact with clients and those in search of an attorney. There is a shroud of mystery surrounding lawyers that fosters misinformation, prejudice, distrust and confusion. The aim of this book is to penetrate this shroud and solve the mystery. To accomplish this purpose, I inform, educate and illustrate what clients need to know.

Armed with new found knowledge and awareness, the layperson will be able to approach the attorney/client relationship with confidence rather than distrust and apprehension. This, in turn, will empower them to challenge the lawyer in ways that will save money, time and disappointment.

My book falls into the genre of a how-to book. Readers do not generally buy a how-to book and expect to be entertained. However, readers of “Legal Ease, Your Essential Guide To Lawyers Shysters And Ambulance Chasers” are in for a pleasant surprise. I have inserted, in between the pointers and practical advice, personal anecdotes that reflect some of the humor and drama of my experience in the legal arena. This format provides an entertainment bonus rarely part of a how-to or self-help book.

Clients have been exploited by lawyers in a multitude of ways that have come to be accepted as the norm. It is my mission to expose the imbalance in the attorney/client relationship. I suggest ways and means for the client to assert his rights and restore equilibrium to the relationship.

A secondary theme of this book is to expose the under-belly of the legal profession and the culture of greed that has come to identify lawyers. What started with the exorbitant fees of big law firms has spilled over to smaller firms as well as sole practitioners. Attorney fees have increased to the point where they bear no reasonable relationship to the value of the service performed. This abuse is known and tolerated by the organized bar.

As a consequence of this prevailing virus of greed, needed legal services are fast becoming out of the economic reach for all but the wealthy and privileged citizens of this country. A quote from a big firm lawyer taken from my book “that a claim for $50,000 was too paltry a sum to try to recover and not worth chasing,” illustrates the point. It’s time that someone within the profession challenges this type of greedy arrogance and speaks up for the average man and woman, and that is precisely what I do.

PHANTOM DREAMS

Could Be Your Next Great Read!

Phantom Dreams

by T. K. Harris
<%title%>
4.5 stars – 6 Reviews
Text-to-Speech and Lending: Enabled

Here’s the set-up:

A scorned serial killer on an old vendetta.

An FBI agent who has been chasing monsters for too long.

A woman whose nightmares start invading her waking life.

FBI Special Agent Jack Matthews finds himself on yet another serial killer case, having barely recovered from the last disastrous hunt. Still stiff from a gun shot wound in his leg, under investigation for a botched job, and having lost his fiancée when she walked out on him, Jack is beginning to wonder if it isn’t time to move on to something new. But, for Jack, these cases are personal and he can’t say no.

Marketing specialist Kathy Gilliam leads a fairly boring life. If she’s not working or caring for her ailing father, then she is doing whatever it takes to avoid going anywhere near crowds of people. Her few distractions include her friend Margo Longfellow, occasional hiking trips, and her increasingly alarming dreams of women dying.

As her nightmares cause her to begin to doubt her sanity, the media releases news of the “Coast-to-Coast Killer” and Kathy discovers her dreams may be related. In a moment of panic, Kathy does something that places her on the FBI’s “persons of interest” list. Suddenly, her life is set on a collision course with Jack who must decide if Kathy is the killer or destined to become a victim.

Editorial Reviews

Smart, suspenseful and disquietingly believable. – Kirkus Reviews

This serial-murder thriller hints at the supernatural.

Kathy’s recurring bad dreams seem to be getting more frequent and more explicit. At the behest of her psychiatrist, she starts sketching the dreams, only to find that her sketches have an uncanny resemblance to victims of the Coast-to-Coast Killer that she later sees on TV. Co-narrator Jack, an FBI agent on the serial killer case but short on suspects, is happy to entertain Kathy’s testimonial after she reports her premonitory abilities to the police. There’s also the perspective of Tom, the elusive, misogynistic serial killer, who seems to suffer from multiple-personality disorder. Redolent of The Eyes of Laura Mars, the taut narrative unfurls an appropriately unsettling though vague sense of Tom’s condition, mixed with a clearer sense of his location. Jack, haggard from his job and disenchanted by FBI bureaucracy, nonetheless radiates charisma and empathy. The details of Kathy’s life unfold with patience: Her dreams merge with reality at a believable pace, then, as expertly plotted by the author, doubt sets in while readers and Jack begin to question the reliability of her perception. By skeptically referencing its supernatural element–“Think we’ve got an actual X-Files case here?” asks Jack’s sidekick–the story adeptly tightens the suspension of disbelief…
