Here’s the set-up:
A celebration of life and its many contradictions, The Love of Impossible Sums is a contemporary London tale of interlocking love stories, sexual indiscretions and dysfunctional friendships. It explores the themes of love, loss, and the different ways people live their lives.

Oliver has lost his wife Eden to illness. Still grieving three years later, unable or unwilling to imagine a future without her, he finds himself stuck in a joyless existence. But everything appears to change when on a bright December morning a stranger asks him for a light and then invites him to “They Them”, a poetry reading event by “a poet like no other”. The stranger is Alex, or They, and a ventriloquist’s dummy is Them, representing her dead husband Sam in a performance they had planned to do together. ‘Life is love and death,’ They Them declare on stage.

Instantly drawn to each other by more than just their shared experience of loss, Oliver and Alex embark on a whirlwind romance. But tensions are being constantly stirred up by an ever-present cast of meddling characters, and as the strains of the present increase, the betrayals of a past full of lies and gratuitous disclosures soon begin to spill out and cause dangerous rifts…

“Cacoyannis writes very well on a small canvas. His previous works have had elements of satire, though it may be a stretch to see this latest as having such; these characters appear, at least, to be very serious as the author puts them through their paces—perhaps too serious. But maybe that is the point: They’re all navel gazers, well-meaning most of the time, but self-absorbed, nonetheless. They demonstrate a panoply of sexual variety, and bed-hopping is a recurring motif, with so-and-so being unfaithful with what’s-his/her-name with abandon. But to offset this, they all seem to be compulsive confessors; in fact, transgression followed by confession is shown to be a social tactic among this group, a strategy for leverage… Still, readers will come to like Ollie and care about the outcome of his new love with Alex, which holds real promise…

A rather strange but skillfully written study of a group of friends doing their best to get by.” Kirkus Reviews

The media calls it the beginning of a ‘Serial Summer’. Someone’s killing young women in New York City. Fresh from the case that nearly ended his career, NYPD Homicide detective John Keegan is thrust into a series of murders looking more and more like the workings of a copycat.

Pressure comes from several areas. One of the victims is the granddaughter of a powerful Senator who follows Keegan’s work throughout the case. The mayor fears the murders will affect his successful anti- crime initiative in a re-election year. Keegan’s boss, passed over for a promotion, is eager to put this case to rest and secure a position higher up in the department.

Keegan’s partner disengages himself from the investigation, forcing Keegan to make rash decisions about the case and his partner. When the killer strikes close, new suspects arise and a cop will end up in handcuffs. The killer not only knows how to elude capture, they know the police and their moves. They also play the game of blackmail perfectly.

Before he solves the case, Keegan will be forced to analyze everything about his life and the people he loves.

Here’s the set-up:

How far would you go to keep a promise?

Bernadette Rogers swore she’d never put her father in a nursing home. Does that include euthanizing him to keep her word? Her mother thinks it does. Bernadette isn’t so sure. And even if she were, it’s not like you can walk into a drug store and buy Nembutal.

As an ICU nurse she’s no stranger to the blunt realities of death, but her mother’s request to help her father—who’s disappearing into the abyss of dementia—go “peacefully” blindsides her. Her mother thinks it’s assisted suicide. Bernadette knows better. Even if they do it for all the right reasons, it would still be murder.

Surrounded by conflicting voices, Bernadette doesn’t know which way to turn. Her self-righteous sister insists it’s a sin. Her magnanimous ex thinks her mother will try it alone. Then her best friend offers to help. What was supposed to be a relaxing two-week break becomes an emotional rollercoaster as Bernadette is forced to make an agonizing decision about her beloved father and figure out just how far she’s willing to go for love.

For fans of Jodi Picoult and Lisa Genova, House on Fire is an unforgettable story of family, friendship, and the promises we aren’t sure anyone should honor.

Here’s the set-up:

Mosaic Heart is not a book solely about cancer, but cancer is an integral part of this story. As her teacher and guide, cancer helped Donna Mazzitelli see that the world and her family would go on, with or without her. Yet, if she wanted to continue to be a part of life and living, she had to learn to care for herself first. As her companion, cancer insisted it was time to take in this lesson of self-care, self-love, and self-compassion.

Donna’s story reflects a deep dive into the exploration of pieces of her life—most especially her marriage, family life, and the discovery of her life’s purpose beyond midlife. Above all else, this is a love story, as Donna began to rebuild her heart.

She was in her fifties when cancer showed up. Initially, she saw cancer as an unexpected, imposing intruder—something to be feared and fought against. Something to be excised. Something to be eradicated. Ultimately, cancer turned out to be Donna’s closest friend and her most honest and life-affirming ally.
