Here’s the set-up:

When the Phoenix brings its egg of ash to the Rock of Light, a magical community is turned upside down and Nashua must choose between duty and desire.

Award-winning author Donna Cook presents this first installment of the Nashua Chronicles, which take place in the years before the fantasy adventure, Gift of the Phoenix. Nashua’s Choice is a short novella, while Gift of the Phoenix is a full-length novel. The two may be read in any order.

Excerpt:

“Let me see,” Sage Inne says.

Still on the floor, Nashua did not notice Sage Inne’s approach. Nashua does not move.

“Nashua. Let me see.”

Nashua opens her quaking hands but keeps the stones close. Their beauty alone is enough to make one stare. The others tentatively gather round.

Nashua watches Sage Inne kneel and stare at the stones, fiercely luminous. Sage Inne reaches out her hand. In the space that exists between the stones and the waiting hand of Sage Inne, Nashua senses a trembling warning.

She gathers the stones closer to her body, enclosing them in her embrace. A collective gasp escapes the group, excepting Sage Inne who remains still as stone and a man who cries “Insolence!”

It happens in an instant.

He steps forward, his intent to deliver the stones to Sage Inne himself clear.
Nashua flinches away and Sage Inne raises her hand in warning, bringing the man to a halt.

Only an instant, but Nashua’s heart flails against her chest. He may as well have been after her head.

One Reviewer Notes

“The story of three characters brought together not by choice but fate needing to overcome their misgivings and lack of faith in each other as they puzzle together the mysteries of the phoenix and the threat that threatens them all. This book was great it kept me guessing. The characters felt real in their interactions with one another. I was constantly trying to guess where the book would take me next. It was a wonderful journey.” – Amazon Reviewer, 5 Stars

About The Author

Donna Cook’s passion for writing began at a tender age and has persisted throughout her life. As a reader, she enjoys a wide range of fiction from the classics to modern tales. Her criteria for a good book has less to do with genre and more to do with the quality of the writing. She’s known for her taste in books and has friends who are fond of scrounging her Goodreads page for recommendations.

After graduating college in 1995 with a strong literary background and a creative writing degree, she discovered fantasy in 2002 when the popularity of the Harry Potter books was too much for her to ignore. She fell in love with the whimsy and adventure of the genre and began working on Gift of the Phoenix shortly thereafter. Some traumatic events in her personal life pushed writing to the background for several years, but Gift of the Phoenix finally released in 2012.

She’s currently working on the sequel to Gift of the Phoenix, as well as a standalone fantasy titled The Crossroads. After that she plans to return to her literary roots with a novel tentatively titled The Lost River.

She is an Arizona native recently transplanted to Boise, Idaho, where she is delighting in the change of scenery. When she’s not writing she spends her time chasing the kids, exploring delicious eateries downtown, and dancing with her talented husband.
