Quick Shots

Here’s the set-up:
Gary Jonas sold his first short story to Marion Zimmer Bradley for Sword and Sorceress VII.  Since then, he’s had stories published in various anthologies and magazines including Robert Bloch’s Psychos, Prom Night, It Came from the Drive-In, 100 Vicious Little Vampire Stories, Fantastic Fiction, Crime Spree, etc.  QUICK SHOTS collects the best of his short fiction in one place.
The book is divided up so you start with horror stories, then move into fantasy and finally close out the book with a selection of crime stories including his popular Hitman series.
Here are some of the other opening lines:
Whenever I doubt that I should be killing people, I take a job working with the public.
—Death Threat for a Hitman (originally published in Fantastic Stories)
My date had been dead for two weeks when we arrived at the prom.
—Omar’s One True Love (originally published in Prom Night edited by Nancy Springer)
Joe Crane roared into Onkawa, Oklahoma like a pissed-off demon bent on destruction.
—The Blood on Satan’s Harley (originally published in It Came from the Drive-In edited by Norman Partridge)
Traffic pisses me off.
—So You Wanna Be a Hitman (originally published in Robert Bloch’s Psychos edited by Robert Bloch)
My collection of bodies is getting too big for the basement.
—Collector’s Fever (originally published in Horrors: 365 Scary Stories edited by Robert Weinberg et al)
An hour had passed since the robbery, but Larry could still feel the muzzle of the gun against his head.
—Since I Had a Gun to My Head (one of the stories original to this collection and an incredibly intense tale)

THE GUN IS LOADED

Get ready to read an outstanding collection of 29 stories including some that appear here for the first time!

THE TARGET IS SET

If you love horror, suspense, fantasy or just plain fun, you’ve come to the right place.

TAKE AIM

“The Blood on Satan’s Harley” – a headless biker roams the highways of Oklahoma searching for victims.

“By Death Abused” – a paranormal investigator helps a boy deal with his dead, but still abusive father.

“In League” – a rock band’s music opens gateways to Hell.

“Single White Vampire” a lonely vampire seeks romance while trying to avoid her master’s goons, including an Elvis impersonator vampire.

“Maternal Instinct” – a young woman hears a voice whispering to her baby over her nursery monitor.

“Broken Spirits” – two damaged people track down the man who stole their souls.

“Since I Had a Gun to My Head” – a man deals with the intense after-effects of an armed robbery.

“So You Wanna Be a Hitman” – one hitman tale alone would be worth the price of admission, but you get five (count ‘em) tales about this politically incorrect killer. He has virtually no redeeming qualities, but you’re going to love him.

PULL THE TRIGGER

Why are you still reading this? Buy the book already. You know you want it. You know you need it. You know it will help you earn millions of dollars, make you look like a movie star and win the heart of your one true love. Some say it will also cure cancer and bring about world peace.

Of course, your mileage may vary.

But you’ll definitely find some Quick Shots of entertainment and that’s the next best thing.

QUICK SHOTS – a killer collection. Bet you can’t read just one.

CORNERED! P.I. Jonathan Shade and Gorgeous Assassin Kelly Chan Put Novelist Gary Jonas on the Spot Over His Authorial Transgressions in the Newly Released Novel MODERN SORCERY

by Gary Jonas

Gary Jonas is not on the FBI’s Most Wanted List (so far as he knows) because all of his crimes are committed as fiction. But that doesn’t mean that his own characters don’t have a serious bone to pick with him.

Jonathan Shade is a private investigator who handles cases dealing with the paranormal.  His protector is the gorgeous Kelly Chan, a magically engineered assassin.  They recently sat down at Kelly’s dojo to air some grievances with their creator.

Jonathan: Hey, Gary.  We asked you to stop by—

Kelly: So we could kill you.

Jonathan: Whoa, Kelly, let’s give the guy a chance to redeem himself first.

Gary: Redeem myself for what?

Jonathan: Going public with MODERN SORCERY, m’man.  You weren’t supposed to write that down.

Gary: It was too cool not to write about.

Jonathan: Cool to you.  I had to live through it.  Dude, fighting an ancient sorcerer is not my idea of a good time.  I hear you’re writing more of our exploits.

Gary: I have a three book contract.  The next adventure, coming in May 2012, is called ACHERON HIGHWAY.

Kelly (drawing her sword): He can’t finish the book if he’s dead.

Gary: What is it with you guys?  Don’t you know who I am?

Kelly: Someone who’s going to be referred to in the past tense.

Jonathan: We can resolve this peacefully.  Stop writing.

Gary: Sorry, Jonathan.  Doesn’t work that way.  You may think you have lives of your own, but I’m your creator.  You’re going to have more adventures and I’m going to write them down.  Deal with it.

Jonathan: You forget, magic doesn’t work on me.

Gary: Direct magic doesn’t work on you, Jonathan.  I’m a writer so I can come at you in ways you can’t even begin to imagine.

Jonathan: Give me a break.

Gary: Kelly placed her sword against Jonathan’s throat.

Jonathan: Whoa, Kelly, move that sword!

Kelly: I didn’t put it there.  That awful … no … wonderful writer did.  Hey!  Stop putting words in my mouth.

Gary: Sorry, guys.  That’s my job.  Your job is to have cool adventures I can share with people.

Jonathan: Can they be less painful?

Gary (shakes his head): Sorry.

Jonathan: Then at least let me get laid.

Magic can be deadly…
When Private Investigator Jonathan Shade’s ex-lover walks into his Denver office asking him to prove her father didn’t commit the murder that dozens of witnesses saw and security cameras captured, Shade finds himself in the thick of magical intrigue. In a world where evil warlocks refuse to die, magically engineered assassins deal merciless death and ancient myths aren’t quite so mythical, only Shade and his sexy partner, Kelly, can stop a power-hungry sorcerer from taking over the world.

Too bad Shade doesn’t have any magic.

They say that truth is stranger than fiction. Some of the following is true.  For example, Gary Jonas writes fantasy novels such as Modern Sorcery and One-Way Ticket to Midnight.  Well, that’s sort of true.  The truth is that he’s already written those, but he will write more unless he gets too bored.  But we’ll call that an example of true.  Gary’s wife is Jessica Alba.  Sadly, this is false.  Jessica Alba won’t return his calls, but that’s the way it goes, and no, the restraining order doesn’t prevent him from going to California. Gary is an author for Sky Warrior Books.  This is also true.  In our quest for world domination, we know that having someone like Gary at our side during a zombie apocalypse is pretty useful.  We can at least throw him in front of the zombie hordes while we run away screaming. It’s not that we don’t appreciate our authors.  We just know our limitations.  Gary, however, has added a number of true and false questions for us to puzzle over.  Here are three; can you pick out the false one? 1. Gary’s stepmother hired a stranger to shoot off her foot with a shotgun. 2. Gary dreams of creating a religion so he won’t have to pay taxes and, in spite of the fact that he writes fantasy, people will believe him and pay him lots of money. 3. Gary dressed in drag and appeared on stage in front of a large audience telling a popular fantasy author that he wanted the author to lick his beaver, and raised his skirt to reveal a stuffed beaver hanging there ready for action.  Which is false?  None of them.  Which is why Gary is part of the Evil Overlord plan and a valued minion. His other works include the upcoming Quick Shots, a collection of short stories and Modern Sorcery, an urban fantasy series.  Check out his website http://www.sff.net/people/gary_jonas/ Oh, and don’t tell him about the zombie hordes.

A down-and-out bluesmanA rough-and-tumble-biker

A series of supernatural murders

Roy Porter lives on the streets of Tulsa, his music all but forgotten. When his friends start dying in horrible ways, Roy realizes he’s seen the pattern of death before. The cops are searching for a regular killer, but Roy knows there’s more going on and if he doesn’t act, he might be next of the death list.

He teams up with Jim Hartford, a tough biker with a haunted past, to hunt down the killer. But how can this unlikely pair hope to face up to a killer with powers born from the depths of evil? They’re on a train bound for hell and it’s a one-way trip.

One Reviewer Notes:

“Roy Porter [is] not the typical main character. At some point he gave up on life and became homeless. This doesn’t sound like a hero. His life gets even worse when he becomes a suspect in a string of unusual murders because he knew all of the victims. Of course, he didn’t do it and he tries to get help from his friend Jim who is a psychic, into the mystical and uses his power for good. As the story progressed, I wanted to know how Roy got to the point where he gave up on life. These details are dished out in a way that kept me wanting to turn the pages to find out more. Jim also made me curious. There is comic relief between these two, and they make for an entertaining pair as they try to stop the real killer who, of course, uses his magic for evil.

“Roy has many obstacles to face if he’s going to clear his name and the problems become bigger than that as the real killer grows in power. He is up against both dark external forces and his own internal conflict. Roy has to solve both if he’s going to survive, and I found the way the author weaved these two elements together masterfully done. This is what makes “One Way Ticket to Midnight” a 5 star read.”

About the Author
Gary Jonas is not on the FBI
Gary Jonas is not on the FBI’s Most Wanted List (so far as he knows) because all of his crimes are committed as fiction. Gary’s latest novel is Modern Sorcery and it’s now available on Kindle! Jonathan Shade is a private investigator in Denver, Colorado who handles cases dealing with magic and the paranormal. His secretary, Esther, is a ghost from the 1920s flapper era and his protector is a magically engineered assassin named Kelly Chan (she rocks). If you enjoy books by Jim Butcher, Robert Crais, Elmore Leonard, Roger Zelazny and Robert B. Parker, this series will appeal to you. There will be at least two more Jonathan Shade adventures. Gary is currently writing the second novel in the series (tentative title: Acheron Highway). His first novel was One-Way Ticket to Midnight (originally published back in 2002) and is available on Kindle. Quick Shots, a short story collection is also available (yes, it includes all of the hitman stories).

Gary: He’s the one who tells me what happened.

Kelly: I want my own story, too. You free for lunch?

Gary: Sure. But leave the sword here.

Jonathan: What about me?

Kelly: Buy your own lunch.
