Pickin’ Tomatoes
in its Audible Audio Edition, Unabridged!
Start with a protagonist who is a combination of Lucy Ricardo, Julia Child, and Bridget Jones. Toss in a few “Cheating Gourmet” recipes and a dash of witty relationship advice. Stir up the plot with a devious boss. The finished product? Pickin’ Tomatoes—a light-hearted comedic story about a single mom finding happiness and hilarity as a cooking columnist.
Maggie Malone wants a new life. Who aspires to be a forty-year old, jobless new mother? Driven by the need for an income, Maggie decides to enter a writing contest. Cooking and Women Magazine is seeking a columnist who can compare finding “Mister Right” to cooking. To qualify, an entrant must be single and an experienced chef. Maggie is neither—she can’t even cook. But desperation turns white lies into tasty morsels and she whips up an article comparing finding “Mister Right” to picking the right tomato for homemade salsa. She wins the contest, is dubbed the Chef of Hearts, and her new life is launched.
Pickin’ Tomatoes is a story that pokes fun at the trials and errors of choices everyone faces in life. You’ll laugh aloud at Maggie Malone’s escapades in the kitchen, you’ll commiserate with her soul-searching as she stumbles through motherhood, and you’ll be appalled at the lies she tells to reinvent herself as The Chef of Hearts. But even as she’s leaping from one ill-advised plan to another, you’ll find yourself rooting for her. We’ve all had a Maggie Moment or two—fumbling to make the best out of a bad situation and wishing life came with a recipe for happiness.
With its distinct voice, organic humor, and recipes, Pickin’ Tomatoes provides tasty entertainment, guaranteed to make you laugh.

Finding Mister Right is like choosing the right tomato for your home-made salsa. Yes, ladies, you may think you want a firm, ripe, fresh tomato that will give your salsa zest and new life. But that same young, firm-fleshed tomato might get bored with your salsa and run off with someone else’s onion. Fresh tomatoes, although pleasing to the eye, can give you watery salsa. Ladies, when it comes down to tomatoes and men, the everyday, canned variety is better. Mister Right might be a little boring. He might even be slightly lumpy. But he has potential if you spice him up. And chances are, he won’t run away with someone else’s onion!
