Here’s the set-up:
When Koty Fowler’s husband volunteers her to visit Jamie, a quadruple amputee who lost his limbs in Iraq, neither Koty nor Jamie is happy. Jamie resents being “babysat” every day. Koty resents her lot in life: almost 30, mother of three, and trapped in an unhappy marriage in Granite Creek, a small New Hampshire town. But when Koty and Jamie come together in a sexually-charged situation, everything changes. While Koty continues to explore her relationship with Jamie, her life at home spirals out of control: her sometimes-abusive husband drinks too much, and her middle daughter is on a destructive path, skipping school and getting into fights, while Koty’s other two girls are left to watch. What happens next, however, leaves everyone reeling, and the Fowler family must learn how to move forward, even as they struggle to understand what happened in their own backyard.

Told in multiple viewpoints and spanning across nearly two decades, What Happened in Granite Creek brings readers on a journey of intrigue and unexpected twists while reminding us that nothing is ever what it seems.

Behind the Scenes with Robyn Bradley

What Happened in Granite Creekfeatures a disabled character, Jamie Briggs. Jamie is a quadruple amputee who lost his limbs while serving in Iraq. When I began writing the novel, there was only one surviving quad amputee from the war — that’s how extensive of an injury it is. As of right now, I know of at least two (there may be more), and both are living full lives, according to media reports.I never consciously set out to write a story featuring a disabled character…it just happened. But people within the communities that support and advocate for those with disabilities have been reaching out. It’s great to see people embracing my book, and it’s thrilling to realize the book is playing a role in showing how someone with a disability, even a disability as extensive as Jamie’s, can live a full and happy life.

One community in particular that has shown the story a lot of love is the devotee community. If you’re curious to know what a devotee is, I encourage you to check out my blog post “Serendipity & Devotees,” which provides more details. I was fortunate that someone from the devotee community — a woman who is married to a double-leg amputee — reached out to me before I published What Happened in Granite Creek (she had read my short story upon which the novel is based). This wonderful woman provided much needed insider information on the day-to-day lives of amputees, info that helped me make Jamie’s character all that more authentic.

I’m hoping this tidbit has intrigued you and that you’ll consider downloading What Happened in Granite Creek to your Kindle. Happy reading!

“This is one of those books that I don’t encounter often enough – pulls you in from the very beginning and makes you put everything else aside so you can keep reading! Loved the story, the writing is wonderful, characters are well developed and you really feel their emotions. And I love the way the storytelling changes in the middle of the book from the main character to the point of view of the other characters. Twists and turns, keeps you guessing, didn’t want it to end! Can’t wait for the next book from this author!”

Quite an emotional experience, reading this book. It was not what I had expected going in. I read the short story on which it is based and was looking forward to an interesting romance. The book it became is much more complex. It takes a sharp left turn half way through that I did not see coming. It did allow the story to explore something so much bigger: the way memory works, the way people try to put together lives based on just pieces. The language was beautiful and the characters were achingly believable. The author's ability to show the point of view of so many different people at different times in their lives is very impressive. A couple of uses of language that really stood out to me: "...with a voice that reminds me of the rumble strip on a highway" and "I sensed she'd been distant, drifting away from us the same way you can be standing still in the ocean, thinking you're not moving, and then you look up and realize you've drifted far from where you thought you were." I'm a little bit heartbroken right now, a lot shook. This book is a powerful experience.

From the reviewers:

I’m a little bit heartbroken right now, a lot shook. This book is a powerful experience.  Quite an emotional experience, reading this book. It was not what I had expected going in.  –  Ruth Madison

This book just pulled me in and kept me enthralled. I literally didn’t put it down and read it in just over six hours while waiting for a Christmas party to start. I have been reviewing books for several months now and this is definitely in the top five of my all time favorite books I’ve been given to review.   –  Gina Hurteau

Once I started reading, I didn’t want to put it down. I felt like I was right there watching Koty experience life. The story-telling was A+.   You will experience a gamut of emotions as you read about Koty and Wayne and their struggles with life’s unfairness. Not to mention the ups and downs of raising three very different girls. Throw in a wounded soldier and the story explodes. I didn’t expect the outcome of this story AT ALL.  –  Mel Collins

A Guest Post by Robyn Bradley
If you’re a fan of books that fall somewhere between smart chick lit and women’s fiction, you won’t want to miss Forgotten April…a sister story with an edge.
One Amazon reviewer calls it a “great summertime read because it’s smart but also fast-paced and fun.” Another says, “It was very hard to put this novel down. I thought about it when my mind wasn’t otherwise occupied, wondering what was going to happen next.”
by Robyn Bradley
4.6 stars – 17 Reviews
If you’re in the mood for something shorter — you know, something to read in between naps while floating around the pool — check out the short story “Crush.” It’s literary and quirky, but consider yourself warned: you may never look at a Cape Cod beach in the same way ever again.
What’s it about? Here’s the scoop: Living a quiet life as a single mother, Louise Gunther is proud to have successfully raised her only child, Teddy, to adulthood. But all that changes one summer afternoon when Teddy dies in a freak accident on a Cape Cod beach. Moved beyond ordinary grief, Louise becomes obsessed with the manner in which Teddy died, determined to recreate his final moments, even if it means dying herself.

And what would summer be without a little prep reading for fall? In October, I’ll be releasing What Happened in Granite Creek, which I’ve based on one of my most popular short stories, “Support Our Troops.” Check it out and see if you like it and if you want to know more. If you do, be sure to connect with me on my Facebook page so you don’t miss out on all the details leading up to the launch of the full-blown novel.

Our Kindle eBook of the Day is a story of loss, love, survival, and redemption: Robyn Bradley’s FORGOTTEN APRIL – 4.8 stars from 12 straight rave reviews, just 99 cents on Kindle, and here’s a free sample!

Here’s the set-up for Robyn Bradley’s Forgotten April, just 99 Cents On Kindle:
For April Sullivan-LaMonica, the last ten years have been hell: her husband and young son were killed in a car accident, and soon after, her mom descended into the darkness of Alzheimer’s. So when broadcast journalist Maggie Prescott shows up claiming to be April’s half sister and tries to capture their reunion on film, April outwardly regards Maggie with much suspicion. In reality, she’s simply afraid to grow close to someone again, only to have that person leave–or worse.

Maggie, meanwhile, is battling her own demons: figuring out why her biological mother gave her up, facing a secret she’s kept from the one man she’s loved all her life, and giving herself permission to follow the dream she’s had since she was a child.

Separated by nearly two decades and radically different life paths, April and Maggie must decide if pursuing their sisterhood is worth it…or even possible.

A story of loss, love, survival, and redemption that speaks to anyone who’s experienced the pains–and riches–of an unexpected relationship.

From the reviewers:

Sweet, Sweet Serendipity.  I was hooked. Forgotten April was one of the more enjoyable books I have read recently and would make a terrific beach read. The book is written with each chapter being told from the viewpoint of a different character. Sometimes this can be confusing, but Robyn Bradley did a wonderful job of creating each character as an individual but weaving their individual stories into each others lives.–Roxy

Robyn Bradley is a great read. It captured my interest from the outset and I really enjoyed the way the author told the story from the perspective of a different character in each chapter.–Linda K. Komondy

This book was awesome. It was hard to put down. The character and story development are well thought out with many surprises along the way.–Seila Norwood

Robyn does an excellent job of keeping the reader glued as she goes from character to character from the point of view of each one. As a reader you wind up rooting for everyone in the story, and that’s a rarity. It’s a great read. –Don Kelley
