Madness and Murder in San Francisco in Jenny Hilborne’s Kindle Nation eBook of the Day, and here’s a free sample on us!

There is a murderous fiend wandering among the familiar San Francisco landmarks in Madness and Murder, and debut mystery novelist Jenny Hilborne is not shy about telling you what he has done to others … or what he intends to do.

Here’s the set-up:

Frustrated by the rising body count and lack of evidence, veteran homicide detective, Mac Jackson, questions his own ethics when he risks the life of an innocent young woman to trap a cunning and sadistic serial killer.

Known for his uncanny precision with a hunch, he is all too aware that, this time, the stakes are much higher if his gamble fails to pay off.

Jessica Croft, withdrawn, vulnerable, and emotionally scarred, moves from Sacramento to begin a new life in San Francisco with her twin brother, Judd.

Ninety miles from the sinister, shameful secrets of her past, and the madness that tore their family apart, she hopes to find tranquility, maybe even love.

However, her chance for happiness is short-lived when she suddenly finds herself the target of a relentless madman with a deadly agenda. Loath to continue living a life of fear, Jessica tells no one when she takes a bold risk to draw him out; dangerously unaware of the trap he has already set for her.

Now nothing may be able to save her except the accuracy of a hunch.

“…if what you’re after is a good, fun, tongue-in-cheek, bloody, shoot-em-up, paranormal mystery, Jason Krumbine delivers all that and more in this book.
–Sandy Lender, author “Choices Meant for Gods”

Here’s the set-up…

Steven Raines (you know, the man who made billions making an operating system that out-Microsoft-ed Microsoft?) has hired Alex Cheradon (private investigator) to look for his missing daughter. Good news: It’s a million dollar payday. Bad news: she may be a Satanist hell bent on bringing the Devil to Earth.

The dead bodies are piling up. Vampires are crawling out of the woodwork. And there’s something named Pookie that’s lurking around the corner.

Breathtakingly paced, the jokes and wisecracks fly fast as Alex races against the clock to save the day.

This is Book 1 in the Alex Cheradon Series.

What the Reviewers Say
Poor Alex Cheradon is a private investigator who wants to stop getting cases that involve the paranormal…or at least that involve members of the “other realm” trying to kill him. In “Fruitbasket From Hell,” circumstances beyond his control have forced him, his metrosexual assistant/receptionist, and his past girlfriend/Laura-Croft-wannabe bodyguard to take on three cases that involve vampires, satanists, gateways to hell, and an ex-partner who won’t die when you throw grenades at him. At the center of it all is the mystery of why Multi-Millionaire Steven Raines has handed Alex a briefcase of sketchy clues, a few threats, and a million dollars to find a daughter who’s only been missing a few hours.

Overall, I found Alex to be a likeable and sympathetic character. I enjoyed his stream-of-consciousness narration, but, at times, it became overwhelming. Krumbine’s sarcastic tone throughout the novel carried into each character thus became difficult to “stay with” at times. I sometimes found it necessary to set the novel aside to get out of Alex’s head. As a testament to Krumbine’s story, though, I kept going back to find out how the plot would develop. And, as a testament to Krumbine’s ability to use dialogue and character interaction to update the storyline, I never had to re-read sections to remember what had happened. I think one reviewer erroneously referred to this as “non-linear”. For an example of an author using a non-linear writing device, pick up John Brunner’s “Stand on Zanzibar,” (which I also recommend, by the way). For an example of an author expertly using a recap, pick up Jason Krumbine’s “Fruitbasket From Hell.”

–Sandy Lender, author “Choices Meant for Gods”
This was a really good book, kept me interested the whole time and wanting to read the next chapter. The Alex character was really funny, and i loved the character Christian, he was very entertaining.
–dar

Okay, so, it begins with this mysterious man coming to Alex Cheradon and offering him a million dollars to find his missing daughter. While in the process of doing so everything seemed to turn upside down and inside out for the main character. It’s one of those, anything can go wrong and will go wrong-type stories.

The author throws a lot of stuff at the reader, from crazy ex-partners to scottish convenience story clerks(Easily one of the funniest bits in the book). It’s got a bit Dean-Koontz-on-crack type feel to the story line. The author tried to tell his story in a very non-linear fashion, which would have worked better in a movie, but in the book caused some moments of confusion, but it didn’t detract from the story too much. The overall story line of the book was actually pretty good with some well developed twists in the plot(See, crazy ex-partner and scottish convenience store clerk.). The main character, Alex, is, I’ll admit, a little annoying, but shows potential to grow and the story leaves us open for a sequel, which I would definitely read.

“Brilliant, witty, insightful, fun little book.”

Here’s the set-up…

“Is It Just Me? or Is Everyone a Little Nuts!” offers a laugh out loud look at parenting, marriage, aging and small town living from an suburban point of view.

Written in short chapters, Coltman retells everyday life events, conversations and stories infused with her skewed sense of humor. These small snippets of life are moments in which anyone can identify and laugh at themselves as well. Middle age can be boring, but Coltman allows the naughty into her life from time to time, like her adult Scout Troop, “Cougar Scouts” Troop 69, or conversations between her middle aged self and her seventeen year old self that will leave you rolling ( and remembering!) A great quick read!!

What the Reviewers Say
Just spent the day laughing, smiling, tearing up, and thoroughly enjoying every moment of this book. Coltman shares her endearing, humorous slant on the most normal life situations we all experience. You will see yourself, your family, friends, neighbors and co-workers in the characters she brings to life and it will simply make you smile when you recognize them. A must read, especially when life gets a bit too serious. I will be sharing this book with everyone.
–Lisa S.

I couldn’t put this book down! My children spent the afternoon giving me quizzical looks because I kept laughing out loud! Judi taps into all of our every day lives but does it with such humor that she lightens our loads, helping us to look at what we previously thought of as mundane with different eyes.
I will recommend this book to everyone!
–Debra A. Stewart

Judi offers the insight of living in a small town with grace and humor. She brings a delightful and humerous look at life’s experiences we can all relate to. Her style of writing leaves you wanting more. Judi’s stories remind us of what is really important in life. For me her message is to treasure the many moments of family, friends, love and humor.
–Susan Mavity

About the Author

Raised in an affluent suburb of Detroit, Judi Coltman grew up in a female heavy household with an urban sense of “normal.” Coltman attended Michigan State University, majoring in Journalism until a professor requested she switch majors – “Apparently making a story better with added features isn’t acceptable in the news world,” Coltman laments.

With a BA in English from Northern Illinois University, Coltman has written for local, regional and national publications.

Most recently, Coltman has been writing a weekly blog called, “My Life in a Nutshell,” from where her book material was born. Often compared to Erma Bombeck, Coltman sees the humor in the absurdity of everyday life and then tells anyone who will listen.

Judi Coltman and her husband split their time between northern Illinois and the California desert. Sometimes they even pass each other at the airport

Emmet Storch goes from unemployed sponger to insurance pro in this humorous fictional take on the twists and turns of love and lust in modern life.

Here’s the set-up…
Emmet Storch was an unemployed sponger who thought he had no calling in life. All that changed when he landed a job in the call centre at the monolithic Star Insurance where, from the very first day, he was magnificent. It was as if the very essence of insurance ran through his veins and he and his telephone were as one. Irate policyholders found comfort in his soothing words; recalcitrant contractors became polite and respectful. It would have been perfect if not for his lecherous and treacherous hormones. A humorous look at love and lust in the modern West where consumerism runs rampant and integrity can go and get stuffed.

Here’s the lowdown on Love Lust and Petty Crime from a 5-Star Reviewer
A good book! The title of this book “Love, Lust, and Petty Crime” says it all. This is a story about how a friendship starts innocently with four people (Jurgen, Voula, River, and Emmet) meeting at an insurance company. All are employed there and all become involved in one way or another. Twisted sisters, twisted brothers, she wants him, he wants the other, but, the other is dating the boss and so on. A great tongue twister with bends and curves that make you read it to the end to see who gets who. One thing is apparent, they all love each other fondly and the things they get into or are willing to do can only be understood by good friends. The author Harclubs Bartag did a good job defining these characters. It’s a quick, fun book that will make you laugh out loud.

About the Author
To be honest, my name is not Harclubs Bartag and I suppose putting this stuff here makes the whole idea of a pen name look a little silly. But I’ve always wanted a secret identity (yes, yes, I know) and the name has a story. It comes from a time when the Australian public was grappling with a new wave of continental European immigrants, and I was in my first year of High School. The teacher was reading the class list out loud and the first name was ‘Harclubs Bartag’. When no one responded, she continued on until the end of the list. My name was not called out, and I put two and two together.

‘Um, Miss,’ I said, raising my hand. ‘My name is Hercules, not Harclubs.’

She obviously thought I was taking the piss. ‘Don’t be silly, Harclubs,’ she said. ‘What sort of a cruel parent would name their child Hercules?’

Kindle Nation Daily Free Book Alert, Sunday, January 9: A free treasure trove for college applicants, teachers, nurses, lawyers, and those making their career choices, plus … A sublime blend of history, adventure and romance in Ariana’s Pride by Margaret Lake (Today’s Sponsor)

But first, a word from … Today’s Sponsor

If you are looking for a sublime blend of history, adventure and romance, novelist Margaret Lake is serving up perfection in Ariana’s Pride, set in the turbulent days of the Wars of the Roses. Ariana is the daughter of an Earl and Jeremy works in the Earl’s stables. Jeremy holds the secret which could make Ariana his, but he wants her to love him for his own sake.

“Margaret Lake’s style reminds me of Baroness Emmuska Orczy’s The Scarlet Pimpernel that I read as a young man. Like that classic historical romance, Margaret Lake’s Ariana’s Pride is a magnificent achievement.
Ricky Sides, Author of the peacekeeper series,
Adventures in Reading, and The Ultimate in Women’s Self-Defense.

Loved it, from beginning to end.”
“This book is a page turner in the best sense.”
“A book to remember.”

Here’s the set-up…

Ariana’s Pride is an historical romance set during the Wars of the Roses. The story commences shortly after the Battle of Barnet where Warwick The Kingmaker was killed and Edward IV has just taken his throne back from the mad king, Henry VI. This one decisive battle affected the lives and attitudes of Ariana and Jeremy.

Ariana Devoe is the willful and arrogant daughter of Earl William. What happens when she finds that she has lost her home and family? Will she lose her heart, too, as she struggles to reach the elderly Baron to whom her father has promised her? Or will she throw away her chance to avenge her father’s death and regain her titles and estates to be with the dashing Jeremy?

Jeremy Gowen has lived most of his life in the Earl’s stables, but does not intend to end his days there. Aided by the stablemaster, once a soldier in the King’s service, Jeremy secretly learns horsemanship and sword fighting.

After the attack on her father’s castle, Jeremy finds Lady Ariana, lost and alone. He promises to take her to the Baron, but as their journey progresses, he is no longer willing to turn the woman he loves over to another man. Jeremy holds the secret which could make Ariana his, but he wants her to love him for his own sake.

What the Reviewers Say
I enjoyed this book very much. And I am not a reader of Romance novels. I don’t think this book is. It is a historical novel with a romance in it. The characterizations are excellent. Ms. Lake presents the main two characters and they are less than 100% likable. However as they overcome hardships and meet new challenges in a very short period of time, they grow-up. And they become much more likable to each other as well as to the reader. I give this book 5 stars because is is so good for a first book. And I look forward to more from this author and will purchase subsequent offerings.
–Geoff Thomas
I Loved this book .It is a wonderful Historical novel with Romance and a little Mystery. A well written first novel. I look forward to the next book by Margaret Lake.
–Anne M. Dixon

I love reading Historical Romance, so I figured this would be right up my alley. It delivered and then some.

I started reading and was immediately drawn in by the characters and the surroundings. It was very easy to care for Ariana and Jeremy, but was also surprised in a nice way how much I liked the other characters met on this wonderful adventure by the two… Once I started the book, I couldn’t put it down. It is very engaging and a great road adventure.

I loved the Historical details that brought the story to life, but weren’t to much to bog down the flow. This was a highly entertaining read from beginning to end. I can’t wait to read the next one.

–Anna-Maria
I just finished reading Ariana’s Pride by Margaret Lake. I purchased the book after reading the author’s short story “Of Love and War.” I was astonished at the character development the writer achieved in the short story; therefore, I just had to see what she could do with a full-length novel. I was not disappointed.

I chose Ariana’s Pride because of the interesting action adventure storyline. I must say that at the outset, neither Lady Ariana Devoe nor Jeremy were likable characters. Both seemed to possess character flaws that tended to cause me to dislike them. However, as the plotline unfolds, the pair comes to recognize their weaknesses and strive to overcome them. By the end of the book, they had redeemed themselves most admirably.

The author has a wonderfully descriptive narrative, which allowed me to easily visualize the various scenes depicted in the book.

The romance aspects of the novel are better than most romance books I’ve read, though admittedly they are not great in number. I don’t normally read romance novels, but this author of historical romances skillfully merges action adventure and romance. I’ve said it before, but I’ll say it again in this review. Margaret Lake’s style reminds me of Baroness Emmuska Orczy’s The Scarlet Pimpernel that I read as a young man. Like that classic historical romance, Margaret Lake’s “Ariana’s Pride” is a magnificent achievement.

Like Orczy before her, Lake has the ability to draw in crossover readers who prefer adventure books. There’s nothing wrong with that. To the contrary, any writer who can get a reader to expand their reading preferences serves the readers well. You action adventure fans should try this book. Romance fans, there’s plenty to admire here. The historical backdrop was fascinating.

I highly recommend this book. Indeed, it has caused me to rethink my preferred genres. I’ll definitely be reading other books by this author in the future.

Ricky Sides, Author of the peacekeeper series, Adventures in Reading, and The Ultimate in Women’s Self-Defense

I hope to see more of Ms Lake’s work. This book is a page turner in the best sense. It is well researched and written. No time wasted in reading this. Of course it is also set in my favorite period of English history; The War of the Roses.
–Ruth S. Mcgovern

About the Author
I was born in New Jersey (practically lived on the beach), but moved to Florida when I was 13. Reading has always been my favorite activity, even as a child. I’ve been downsizing and have probably donated 5,000 books in the past several years. I still have seven book cases crammed full and I can’t even count how many on my Kindle.
My other passion is history, especially English History. I think my interest really began when I read “Catherine” by Anya Seton. When the inspiration came to write my first book, I naturally gravitated to the Wars of the Roses because of that book.

My favorite author is Susan Howatch, my favorite book is “Outlander” and my favorite series is Harry Potter. I lead a Harry Potter book club at the elementary school.
I’m still waiting for the rescue kitty lady to find me a kitty I can rescue.

And that’s not all. Besides Ariana’s Pride, Margaret Lake has written four other popular Kindle books:
