Jailbird

A Note from the Author to Kindle Nation Readers:

I’m often asked where I get the inspiration to write about the strong, resilient women in my novels.   The short answer: it’s all around me.  A piece of my life is in every book I write.  My failures and triumphs are woven into every page, along with the strength of the women I grew up around.

The women in my family are a plucky bunch – maybe it’s my roots, from the wild and rugged Ozark country that straddles Missouri and Arkansas – but they were always able to make something out of nothing and aren’t afraid of hard work.  My mother was a military wife, and my father was frequently gone for long stretches of time.  She worked a grueling job as a floor nurse, yet she managed to keep an unwavering faith as she worked long days to put food on the table and clothes on our backs.  Most importantly she laughed with us, cried with us and loved us fiercely.   In turn, we learned the invaluable meaning of hard work, perseverance and laughter, no matter what life throws at us.

I’ve watched my sisters move through life’s trials with wit and grace, whether it’s fighting to save a child from a scary metabolic disorder that nearly claimed her life or forging a new life after a broken marriage. It was my sisters who were beside me when my own son lay at death’s door – and lifted me up during every weak moment on his road to recovery.

I’ve lost every material thing I’ve owned, and I’ve had moments of such complete joy that they will be forever frozen in my memory because of their sheer perfection.  Having seen both ends of the spectrum, I’ve learned that life is short enough to be cherished and long enough to never give up hope while there is a breath left to fight. And those moments of crazy joy are worth fighting for.

I was told once that my novels were too messy to ever succeed – too many bad things happened to the heroines. To make matters worse, they retained a sense of humor throughout the worst of times. Conventional wisdom insisted the literary market would never stand for that paradox.

I respectfully disagree. The way I see it, life is messy—and hard.  That doesn’t mean we should lose our sense of humor or fail to find joy.   This is the message I try to instill through all my novels, including JAILBIRD, and above all, my own life.  I hope it’s a message you enjoy reading.

Heather Huffman

Here’s the set-up:

In this paradoxical blend of light and dark, Jailbird is a warm and humorous tale about the power of hope.
Neena Allen has led a tough life. Born on the reservation, raped and unjustly convicted of murdering her attacker, she survives prison – barely. When an opportunity presents itself, she doesn’t hesitate to escape. Presumed dead, she stumbles into a sleepy Arkansas town where she finds refuge with a kind family and glimpses the chance for a real home, a place to belong.
But leading a double life isn’t easy, especially when you fall in love with the town lawyer.

To complicate matters further, a tenacious reporter gets too close to the truth and Neena finds herself on the run again. With a manhunt under way and her newfound happiness at risk, Neena is forced to face the painful memories of her past to decide on her future.  Should she fight for her new life or give up those she loves to keep them safe?

Heather was born and spent her early childhood in Florida, but now calls the beautiful state of Missouri home. Her greatest joy, aside from writing, is to hit the road with her three boys for adventures unknown.

Here's the set-up:
Simon Bosford, transplanted English soccer star, has the world by the balls. He just signed a multi-million dollar contract with the L.A. Waves, the worst team in Major League Soccer. Simon's more interested in raising his celebrity profile than scoring goals, but his plans take a detour when he tangles with Jessica Jones, the world's most disorganized personal assistant. Jessica has her own plans, and none of them involve launching a puffed-up male Adonis of an athlete on the L.A. celebrity circuit. Jessica, the rebellious daughter of the wealthy, controlling Bretts, who happen to own a few football teams, yearns to make it on her own. The first step on this journey of independence is her new job with Chase Sports Management (CSM) as a travel agent. Evan Chase, her boss and Simon’s agent, gives her the plum position as Simon’s personal assistant after just four months on the job. The assignment comes with one caveat: keep Simon “The Boss” Bosford out of trouble and under wraps until his practices with the Waves start. Easier said than done. As the games between Simon and Jessica kick into high gear, they land off-side, out of bounds, and in love.
One Reviewer Notes:
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. If you are a Romance novel lover, you won't be surprised that Simon and Jessica are going to end up together by the end of the book, but the story that gets them there is delightful. There is humor here and there, enough to make me laugh out loud a couple of times. The characters are well written which makes them easy to connect to while you read about them. There are some surprising twists and turns on Simon and Jessica's journey that I believe you will enjoy.

Robyn Bradley’s WHAT HAPPENED IN GRANITE CREEK is our Kindle eBook of the Day at just $3.99, with 4.5 Stars on 12 Reviews, and Here’s a Free Sample!

Here’s the set-up for Robyn Bradley’s What Happened in Granite Creek, just $3.99 on Kindle:

When Koty Fowler’s husband volunteers her to visit Jamie, a quadruple amputee who lost his limbs in Iraq, neither Koty nor Jamie is happy. Jamie resents being “babysat” every day. Koty resents her lot in life: almost 30, mother of three, and trapped in an unhappy marriage in Granite Creek, a small New Hampshire town. But when Koty and Jamie come together in a sexually-charged situation, everything changes.

While Koty continues to explore her relationship with Jamie, her life at home spirals out of control: her sometimes-abusive husband drinks too much, and her middle daughter is on a destructive path, skipping school and getting into fights, while Koty’s other two girls are left to watch.

What happens next, however, leaves everyone reeling, and the Fowler family must learn how to move forward, even as they struggle to understand what happened in their own backyard.

From the reviewers:

I’m a little bit heartbroken right now, a lot shook. This book is a powerful experience.  Quite an emotional experience, reading this book. It was not what I had expected going in.  –  Ruth Madison

This book just pulled me in and kept me enthralled. I literally didn’t put it down and read it in just over six hours while waiting for a Christmas party to start. I have been reviewing books for several months now and this is definitely in the top five of my all time favorite books I’ve been given to review.   –  Gina Hurteau

Once I started reading, I didn’t want to put it down. I felt like I was right there watching Koty experience life. The story-telling was A+.   You will experience a gamut of emotions as you read about Koty and Wayne and their struggles with life’s unfairness. Not to mention the ups and downs of raising three very different girls. Throw in a wounded soldier and the story explodes. I didn’t expect the outcome of this story AT ALL.  –  Mel Collins

FALSE FLAGS : Betrayal in London

by Noel Hynd

by Noel Hynd
4.2 stars – 5 Reviews

Here’s the set-up:

“Noel Hynd knows the ins and outs of Washington’s institutions, public and private.” Publishers Weekly

From the author of FLOWERS FROM BERLIN, CONSPIRACY IN KIEV and two dozen other best selling thrillers, comes a newly revised ‘endgame’ spy story, based on the events of 1983 that were all too real.

It is 1983, the freezing point of the Cold War between the United States and the Soviet Union. Behind the headlines, unknown to most private citizens, the two super powers bumble toward nuclear confrontation….and in the back streets and back alleys of world capitals, spies and recalled spies fight for a part of a missile guidance system that could tip the balance during nuclear confrontation. And at the center is a woman with a terrible secret.

Noel Hynd takes you on a journey into the world of espionage in both the 1960’s and 1980s. Based on fascinating real life detail, some of it autobiographical, the story teams with real life characters from Andropov to Profumo and spawls across CIA stations in London and Paris as well as Parisian night spots and journalistic/spy haunts such as Harry’s New York Bar in Paris. The times were deadly, but riveting, the mood intoxicating but frightening.

For spy fans, this is a trip into the real world. You will never feel the same about the year 1983.

“The novels of Noel Hynd stand out like emeralds.” – NY Times Book Review.

“A few notches above the Ludlums and Clancys of the world – Booklist

Kindle Nation Bargain Book Alert: Arranged-Marriage Ads, Internet Dudes, Bar-Hopping and a Quest for Love? Yes, We’ve Got It All, with Romi Moondi’s YEAR OF THE CHICK!

(Ed. Note: Here at Kindle Nation, we may not know much, but we know when we are overmatched by the topic at hand. When that happens, we’re very grateful to be able to call on a guest contributor extraordinaire like the lovely Romi Moondi. -S.W.)

So here’s Romi!

Arranged-Marriage Ads, Internet Dudes, Bar-Hopping and a Quest for Love: YEAR OF THE CHICK!

Year of the Chick

by Romi Moondi

5 stars – 1 Reviews
Text-to-Speech and Lending: Enabled

There I was in 2008: writing a blog called “Year of the Chick” ( http://romi41.wordpress.com/ ) wanting to be a writer, fearing an arranged-marriage set-up, and wondering why I sucked at the dating game.

Now here I am in 2011: on the outer edges of expiry for arranged-marriage bliss (sorry dad), and teetering on the edge of trading in the dating game for cats. Lots of cats.

But hey, I wrote a book.

(One out of three ain’t bad.)

I’m glad I finally wrote this on my own terms, since being in charge means I can write about why guys should never refer to females as “babygirl” (since it implies a physical attraction to female infants…gross). I can also describe how a girl can be locked in her bedroom during her sister’s arranged-marriage set-up, because her younger age and fairer skin would screw over big sis’s chances.

There’s also the topic of Internet dating, and how it’s so much easier to stumble into prospects these days. It’s also so much easier to think you’re Internet dating when you’re not even sure what that means, which is another confusing issue I delve into (at the expense of my main character’s ego.)

None of this is written in a sad, self-pitying way, but always in a humorous way. Because we’ve all got problems, yeah? So we might as well laugh at them.

Therefore…if you like love, if you like dating mishaps at the bar, if you like the intrigue of Internet dating, and if you like the spicy twist of arranged marriage possibilities (complete with awkward tea-time meet-ups), then this book is for you.

And if you end up liking this book? Then books two and three in the trilogy will also be for you  (book two will be released in 2012, and is based on a screenplay I wrote, which made it to the semi-finals or better in five screenplay competitions in 2011).

Thanks for listening, and as a final note, “Year of the Chick” (at 74,000 words) is currently on sale for 99 cents, but only until December 11th. Here’s the link for Amazon US: Year of the Chick e-book

Thanks!

Romi

[To interact, you can find me on Twitter ( http://twitter.com/romimoondi ) or at my Facebook author page ( http://facebook.com/romimoondi ). I’m quite talkative. ]

And here’s the set-up:

An awkward family homecoming at Christmas.

A humiliating public weigh-in, with two judging parents as the audience.

The announcement of a deadline for arranged marriage doom.

And that’s just the first two chapters.

In “Year of the Chick,” Romi Narindra must find love before her parents find her a husband. This is a difficult task in a world where self-consciousness is at an all-time high, and dating experience at an all-time low.

Severely lacking in seductive skills and uninspired by her corporate job, Romi turns to what she loves, by writing about her quest to find love on her brand new blog.

From whiskey-breath scum bags to uni-brow creeps and everything in between, Romi and her wingmen come up empty time after time. But hope floats again when she meets a fellow writer unexpectedly.

On the Internet.

So will it be arranged marriage doom, or an Internet affair that’s not as creepy as “To Catch a Predator”?

Time will tell in the “year of the chick,” a twelve-month quest to find love.

Tick-tock.

————————————
“Year of the Chick” is a tale of fiction inspired by a blog the author wrote in 2008. This story is book one of a trilogy, with book two due out in 2012.
Length: 74,000 words or 292 pages

DISCLAIMER: this book contains profanities, blunt accounts of the dating scene, and many awkward family moments. Enjoy!!!
