Amazon Announces Four New Kindles at Stunning Prices, Including a $199 Kindle Fire Tablet, a $99 Kindle Touch, and a New $79 Kindle Base Model

By Steve Windwalker

October 1, 2011

Amazon held a press conference in New York Wednesday morning, and Kindle Nation was well represented by correspondent Len Edgerly of The Kindle Chronicles, who provided our readers with a live blog of a truly dazzling event marked by the launch of four brand new Kindles — include the new Kindle Fire tablet — at prices that shocked us all.

One of the recurring themes from Jeff Bezos and other Amazon spokespersons this week has been these new Kindles are high-end products at low-end prices. And just to put a punctuation mark on that value proposition, although I am not going to attempt a direct comparison of the iPad and the Kindle Fire until I have both units in my hands, I will say this: I spent $599 for my 32GB wi-fi only iPad (plus another $100+  on sales tax and accessories), but I just bought all four of the new Kindle models released this week for a grand total of $526. That’s a family of Kindles that will keep my entire household busy feeding their brains.

It will be interesting to see how things develop with regard to usage patterns between the Kindle Fire tablet and the three new Kindles to which Amazon refers as a dedicated readers.  But two things are clear from the start:

There’s a lot of information to share with you, but we’re going to try to strip it down and proceed from the simple to the sublime, with links to more information and video for those who want to read more.

In that spirit, let’s begin with a very simple comparison chart for the hardware Kindle models that were unveiled Wednesday:

– Matthew Reilly, author of ICE STATION, SCARECROW and THE FIVE GREATEST WARRIORS

Kindle Nation Daily Bargain Book Alert: Mike Jastrzebski’s DOG RIVER BLUES is our eBook of the Day at just $2.99 with 4.6 Stars on 8 Reviews! Free Sample Included Here!

Here’s the set-up for Mike Jastrzebski Dog River Blues, just $2.99 on Kindle.

A sexy relative who wants to teach Wes Darling the meaning of kissin’ cousins, a priceless centuries old manuscript, a three hundred pound redneck, and an ex-spy who thinks murder is a justifiable means of support are just a few of the things awaiting Wes when he sails into the Dog River in search of answers about the father he never knew.

Dog River Blues blends the mystique of the liveaboard boating lifestyle and the colorful characters and vagabonds who live, work, and sometimes commit murder on our nation’s waterways. This is one voyage to Mobile, Alabama you don’t want to miss.

From the reviewers:

Suspense set on the water and family secrets explored by an excellent writer with a sure hand on the tiller.  You will love this book: Five stars!   –  Sandra Balzo, mystery author

In the tradition of the PIs of old, Wes Darling jumps into another wild case with women, bullets and murder. Mike spins a great tale and if you appreciate a fun read, this one ought to satisfy.  –  Richard N. Norman

Great afternoon adventure.  What a wild ride this book took me on. This was my first experience with this PI and I have to say, he is well worth the time to read.  –  JoJo431

Great action thriller! All Characters came alive with details. I was wore out with all they went through to find Grandpa’s missing book! Really exciting, nice explanions on history and scenery. I hope there will be many stories about Wes Darling and his adventures!  –  D. Waid

An entertaining read – I finished it in less than one day – and am fully looking forward to other Wes Darling stories. Colorful characters abound, including a 300 pound bully named Fish, a whole bunch of guys with some form of the name Bob, and other interesting folks, all living in and about a marina in Mobile, Alabama. Throw in a sexy kissin’ cousin, an alleged ex-spy, and a whole new, here-to-fore unknown family unit, and settle in for a rock ’em, sock ’em really good time! Mike Jastrezebski knows how to tell a good story!  –  Bill the Cat

I’ve been anxiously awaiting the second book in the Wes Darling series and it was worth the wait. While I was initially saddened to see Wes point his sailboat away from Key West the setting on the Dog River in Mobile was refreshingly new to me and I enjoyed learning about it.   –  S.R. Campbell

In September of 2003 my wife, Mary, and I moved aboard our 36-foot sailboat, Roughdraft. We sailed the boat from Minnesota to Mobile, Alabama where we lived for two years docked at a small marina.

We also spent three months living at a mooring in Key West. Currently, the boat is docked in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida.

In 2011 we intend to take the boat to the Caribbean where we plan to drift until it is no longer fun.

When I moved aboard it was my intention that I would write a novel. Six years later I have completed 3 mystery novels. The Storm Killer, Key Lime Blues (A Wes Darling Mystery), and Dog River Blues (A Wes Darling Mystery), are now available as paperbacks and eBooks.

Kindle Nation Daily Bargain Book Alert: Our eBook of the Day is JL Wilson’s VENGEANCE, a tale of reincarnation gone terribly wrong – 10 out of 11 Rave Reviews, Just $1.99 on Kindle, and Here’s a Free Sample!

Here’s the set-up for J.L. Wilson’s Vengeance (The History Patrol), just $1.99 on Kindle:

Imagine being torn away from all you know and love. Now imagine being torn away from your place in time. That’s what happened to Nico Haidess, who is trapped not just in time but in a reincarnation gone wrong.

He’s a Guide with the History Patrol, sent back from 2190 and now stranded in 21st Century America. He’s been reunited with the love of his life, Lucinda Delacroix, who has been reincarnated in this place and time. There’s only one problem: he doesn’t recognize her as his lost love and she doesn’t recognize him.

To Lucinda, Nico is just a handsome stranger, a man who seems oddly familiar. And to Nico—a paid assassin—Lucinda is just an assignment, a suspected traitor. He must kill her on Easter morning and make it look like an accident.

Luckily one other creature can help. Cerberus is a telepathic dog on special assignment with the History Patrol, sent to bring these two lovers together. Cerberus has a vested interest in the fate of Nico Haidess and he’ll do whatever it takes to see Nico and Lucinda reunited—even if it means dying and defying God to accomplish his purpose.

But the clock is ticking for all of them and time is starting to run out.

From the Author:

This originally started as my vampire book, but I decided that was too limiting. So I kept some of the vampire aspects (eternal life) and expanded it to be one of my reincarnation stories. Hope you enjoy it — it’s also one written from a male P.O.V., which was fun to do… — J.L.Wilson

From the reviewers:

With a blend of time travel and reincarnation, this is the most creative and original time travel romance I’ve read. Author J. L. Wilson (also known as Jayell Wilson) does a great job of keeping a complex plot clear and organized while being entertaining and keeping the story zipping along.   –  Laura D. Lloyd

Our hero has a quest to kill a man that’s eluded him for two hundred years. He’s also supposed to ‘bump off’ our fiesty heroine in the next few days.  Enough conflict to hold my interest. Fast-paced, the novel, didn’t disappoint. — Donna Caubarreaux

I laughed. I cried. I angsted. My heart broke for the characters. For me, a 5-star book is one where I didn’t see the ending coming halfway through the book. With this novel, I didn’t see it until I read it, and it all made perfect sense.   Simply put, I greatly enjoyed the action-packed ride that was Vengeance. I want more! I will be looking for more from this author.   –  Rhonda

The author wrote very eloquently on each of the characters, that it was easy to see and feel them. It was very well written and the kind of book you don’t want to put down.   –  Reader 29

The story kept me guessing on who was behind everything I would think I had it figured out and then something else would happen to change my mind. I would suggest this story to anyone who likes some suspense and romance.  –  Brenda L. Walls

Souls and soulmates with an element of Time Travel.  All in all it was a great read.  –  Cheryl M.

J L Wilson is a Midwestern author who writes ‘mysteries with a touch of romance … and romance with a touch of gray.’
She also writes time travel books and has a paranormal-political thriller series that’s set on another planet.
