Here’s the set-up:

Two very different cultures clash in outer space. One, the gundies, is composed of humans, dwarfs, elves and other fantasy creatures. The second, the zaftans, are huge, nasty and belligerent aliens.
Against this backdrop, the two main characters, different from everyone around them, struggle to survive because their uniqueness causes their environments to become decidedly hostile.
One, named Sam, is an android with an organic brain. She develops emotions like flesh-and-blood people and the strongest emotion is loneliness. The second main character is a zaftan named Klatze. She tries to advance using talent and ability in a navy that advocates assassination and treachery as the preferred methods for advancement. This novel features an android and a computer falling in love, a naval officer struggling to prove ability is better than murder, piracy on a galactic scale, a robotic zealot, humor and satire. What more could a reader ask for?

5-Star Amazon Reviews

“… Quense’s trademark snarkiness will make you laugh out loud on this exciting and entertaining quest, full of creativity, intrigue, and other-worldly wit!”

“If you enjoy political satire and science fiction, give Zaftan Miscreants a look.”

From The Author

For a long time, I had this great character I wanted to get into a story.  Her name is Sam and she is an advanced model android designed to look like a beautiful woman.  I tried several times but could never get a story going.  When I started collecting ideas for this novel, I realized I had the perfect story for Sam to star in.  And she is the star.

The Brightest Moon of the Century

by Christopher Meeks

4.1 stars – 29 Reviews
Text-to-Speech and Lending: Enabled
Here’s the set-up:

In his fourth award-winning book, Christopher Meeks offers a comic and compassionate coming-of-age novel. A young Minnesotan, Edward, is blessed with an abundance of “experience”–first when his mother dies and next when his father, an encyclopedia salesman, shoehorns Edward into a private boys school where he’s tortured and groomed. He needs a place in the universe, but he wants an understanding of women.

Edward stumbles into romance in high school, careens through dorm life in college, whirls into a tornado of love problems as a mini-mart owner in a trailer park in Alabama, and aims for a film career in Los Angeles.

In nine chapters, the reader experiences Edward’s life from ages 14 to 45. This novel follows Meeks’s highly acclaimed collections of short stories, The Middle-Aged Man and the Sea and Months and Seasons.

Carmela Ciuraru wrote in the Los Angeles Times Book Review of Meeks’s first book, “This idea resonates throughout the collection: Meeks’s characters seek happiness in the small things because they have no choice … [The stories] are poignant and wise, sympathetic to the everyday struggles these characters face.”

Author and humorist Sandra Tsing Loh has said, “Christopher Meeks’s quirky stories are lyrical and wonderfully human. Enjoy.”

Reviews

“Christopher Meeks captures life’s unpredictability while retaining a message of the hope that inspires us all.” -Meghan Burton, Medieval Bookworm

“In his debut novel, The Brightest Moon of the Century, Christopher Meeks chronicles one man’s path to middle age and, in doing so, illustrates how choices and circumstances — even those that seem arbitrary at the time — have a way of irrevocably cementing a person’s future.” -Cherie Parker, Minnneapolis Star Tribune

“Charming and endlessly entertaining, The Brightest Moon of the Century is a fine read that is an excellent addition to literary fiction collections.” -Midwest Book Review

Conflicting Hearts

by J. D. Burrows

4.3 stars – 15 Reviews
Text-to-Speech and Lending: Enabled
Here’s the set-up:

Rachel Hayward hoped to have a quiet thirtieth birthday alone. Instead, fate had different plans.

Caught in traffic and late for work, Rachel takes her eyes off the road to gawk at an accident and rear-ends the car in front of her. Sick over having ruined her day, she lowers her head and waits for the driver to begin a tirade over her stupidity. Instead, a kind man taps on her window showing genuine concern.

The brief colliding encounter suddenly starts a relationship between two strangers that takes off under odd circumstances. When intimacy begins, their relationship turns into a conflicting set of needs. Ian is tenderhearted and respectful, but Rachel desires aggressiveness from a man. The clash of desires threatens to tear them apart. As a result, she is faced with the decision to leave the man she loves or finally confront the painful secret of her childhood.

From The Author

Conflicting Hearts touches on a taboo subject, but one that is very real to many women in today’s society. Though this is a fictional work, that actually documents a factual event in another person’s life, it has the power to open the eyes of readers to better understand those who have suffered sexual abuse as a child. Written with a sprinkle of humor, believable characters, brutal reality, and sizzling romance, it is a book that some claim should be read by every woman.  For those who have been victims themselves, it gives hope that healing and healthy relationships are possible. (If you have been a victim of abuse, please be aware this story may trigger unpleasant emotions.)

About The Author

J. D. Burrows also writes under the name of Vicki Hopkins, who is an award-winning author of historical romance. She started her writing career somewhat late in life, but can attest to the fact that it is never too late to follow your dreams. Her debut novel was released in 2009, and four books later and another on the way, she doesn’t think she will stop any time soon.

With Russian blood on her father’s side and English on her mother’s, she blames her ancestors for the lethal combination in her genes that influence her stories. Tragedy and drama might be found between her pages, but she eventually gives her readers a happy ending.

She lives in the beautiful, but rainy, Pacific Northwest with a pesky cat who refuses to let her sleep in. Her hobbies include researching her English ancestry and plotting her next book.

How Big Is Your God?

A bright examination of modern Christianity” – Kirkus Reviews

This eye-opening new book challenges readers to reevaluate their perceptions of God, and it thoughtfully exposes many misconceptions that are commonly found in the church of our day. Readers are led into a deeper understanding of the real God of the Bible and shown the path to a new and immensely satisfying relationship with their loving Father.

This compelling work is a thought-provoking and inspirational examination of how today’s church views God. As the church struggles to truly experience the unchanging love of our heavenly Father and to rest confidently in God’s perfect purpose for each of our lives, the cause of this crucial deficiency is usually overlooked. Who’s Your Father? explains how our concept of God has grown increasingly flawed, and it reveals how we have been taught to view our sovereign Father as a benevolent gentleman who won’t interfere with human free will. By fostering this view, we’ve unknowingly created a weak, unreliable, and frustrated God who we falsely believe will only occasionally choose to use his divine power to actively work in our lives in a powerful and effective manner.

Writing from the down to earth perspective of a well-versed layperson, Bernecker skillfully shows how we rob ourselves of incredible blessings when we miss the vital connection between the unlimited sovereignty and the unbounded love of the true God of the Bible.

Kirkus adds that Bernecker’s points are “well-researched and well-articulated,” giving the reader “a thought-provoking look at the modern definition of God.”  Amazon reviewer carpenterdaughter writes, “Bernecker faces some tough questions and doesn’t attempt to defend God. He declares and reveals God. He points readers to the truth, and he uses God’s own word to do it.”

An illuminating look at the true nature of God and his dealings with mankind, this extraordinarily insightful book will change readers’ lives across the globe.

About The Author
Robert Bernecker is a layperson who has been a longtime student of God’s word. He recently retired after thirty years at the helm of a multi-million dollar company, where he often witnessed the undeniable hand of God in his life and business. Over the years, he has held virtually every position in the church—leading various ministries, teaching countless classes, and chairing numerous boards. As a ministry to the church, Bernecker has also operated a business of designing and installing audio video systems for churches. This business has given him the priceless opportunity to interact and worship with God’s people from many different denominations and backgrounds. As a result of this life spent thoroughly immersed in the church, Bernecker demonstrates a firm grasp of both the church’s teachings and the impact of those teachings on the lives of God’s people. Written from the unique perspective of a layperson, Bernecker’s debut book is meant to enlighten and bless all of God’s people.
