Here’s the set-up:

Washburn County Deputy Amber Monroe is following in the footsteps of her sister, Jade. She devours everything she can during her detective training in hopes of being promoted soon.

Living in small-town USA has its advantages, like a sense of security, and disadvantages, like being close to Milwaukee and its crime. Washburn County has become the dumping ground of murder victims, courtesy of its neighboring county to the south.

When two men are discovered on the outskirts of North Bend, each with a bullet to the head, Amber’s team, led by Lieutenant Jack Steele, hits the highway in search of a killer. Assisted by the Milwaukee PD, they go deep into Brew City’s underbelly, which reveals far more than anyone ever expected.

Crimes involving murder and counterfeiting keep the team running in every direction, but it’s Amber’s attraction to a new man in North Bend that puts her front and center on the killer’s short list. She doesn’t get far before the entire case turns upside down.

“Spirituality is a central theme throughout the memoir. . . . A moving story of love, loss, illness, and the beauty that persists.” —Kirkus Reviews

Suzanne’s story begins with a phone call from her husband, Michael, telling her he has collapsed on the job. They soon learn he has multiple sclerosis. Despite the negative patterns threatening their marriage, she is determined to handle the caregiving tasks suddenly thrust upon her. Through love, psychological insights, and spiritual inquiry, she cultivates her abilities—and gains the courage to confront a medical system that often saves her husband but at other times threatens his life. As time progresses, Michael undergoes many hospitalizations; he also makes miraculous recoveries that allow adventure back into their lives, including a numinous experience with dragonflies. When Suzanne faces her own medical crisis, their world is shaken once again—but throughout it all, love is their bond, one even death cannot sever.

In Watching for Dragonflies, Suzanne reaches out to other caregivers and anyone who has experienced a life-changing crisis, inviting them to explore the many avenues of growth and transformation that uninvited change can bring. Often poignant, at times funny, and always riveting, Watching for Dragonflies will bring comfort—and inspiration—to readers as they navigate their own transformative journey.

Learn why it’s so important to preserve and protect the birds and their habitat and ensure their safe survival in the years to come through the life of Salim Ali: The Birdman of India by Aadhi Valliappan

Here’s the set-up:

Wildlife and nature watching are considered to be one of the biggest pastimes and entertainment by people even in today’s world dominated by technology. The love for nature, interest in birds, animals, trees and other creatures and caring for them may form the foundation of a career in the future. For this reason, these activities cannot be considered merely as entertainment only.

Because Sálim Ali, one of the world’s greatest ornithologists, started his career as a bird watcher and evolved as the undisputed father of Indian ornithology. He was responsible for the increase in interest in activities such as bird watching and the increase in the number of studies on Indian birds.

Sálim Ali’s life was full of adventures, displaying such qualities as modesty, a sense of humour, and commitment to work. In a third world country like India, he had to travel and stay in places there were no basic amenities which did not deter his pursuit of passion. There were many interesting incidents in his life as he searched for birds in the wilderness. This year as we celebrate his 125th birth anniversary, this booklet is an attempt to familiarise his life story to the children and young adults and in the process, increase their understanding of nature around them.

It needs to be said at this point that the character ‘Pakshirajan’ in the Rajinikanth – Akshay Kumar starrer ‘2.0’ was said to be based on Sálim Ali. Sálim Ali was focused on protecting the birds and the environment based on science – though, the character of “Pakshirajan” is portrayed as quite the opposite in the movie.

Although studies warn of the dangers posed to humans by cell phone towers – there is no known link to the disappearance of birds, including sparrows from urban areas and cell phone radiations. The movie, ‘2.0’ is not based on science. It depicts a conservationist as a terrifying ghost. The director and screenwriter of the film should have exercised prudence and care while portraying this character and refrained from representing such a misleading and unscientific portrayal.

Sálim Ali’s real contribution is distorted by such misrepresentations. A determined mission, it was Salim Ali’s objective to study and document every bird in the Indian subcontinent. To do so it took persistence and sacrifice, But thanks to his efforts, we now have a well-document chronicle of our birds, their habitat and habits. The real contribution of people like him should be made known more widely.

Apart from that, the events in Sálim Ali’s life are similar to the twists and turns of an interesting story. Extensive travels observing and documenting birds gave him a unique understanding of the birds and how their life is intricately linked to their habitat. It is essential, therefore, that we understand Sálim Ali and his mission on his 125th birth anniversary so that we preserve and protect the birds and their habitat and ensure their safe survival in the years to come. It is with this fond hope that this is published.

My sincere thanks to Mr. Ilamparithi, translator. Thanks to Prof. T. Murugavel, Dept. of English, SVCE, Sriperumpudhur, for editing this book

Sincerely,
Adhi Valliappan

Here’s the set-up:

The wise and charming international bestseller and hit Japanese movie—about a young woman who loses everything but finds herself—a tale of new beginnings, romantic and family relationships, and the comfort that can be found in books.

Twenty-five-year-old Takako has enjoyed a relatively easy existence—until the day her boyfriend Hideaki, the man she expected to wed, casually announces he’s been cheating on her and is marrying the other woman. Suddenly, Takako’s life is in freefall. She loses her job, her friends, and her acquaintances, and spirals into a deep depression. In the depths of her despair, she receives a call from her distant uncle Satoru.

An unusual man who has always pursued something of an unconventional life, especially after his wife Momoko left him out of the blue five years earlier, Satoru runs a second-hand bookshop in Jimbocho, Tokyo’s famous book district. Takako once looked down upon Satoru’s life. Now, she reluctantly accepts his offer of the tiny room above the bookshop rent-free in exchange for helping out at the store. The move is temporary, until she can get back on her feet. But in the months that follow, Takako surprises herself when she develops a passion for Japanese literature, becomes a regular at a local coffee shop where she makes new friends, and eventually meets a young editor from a nearby publishing house who’s going through his own messy breakup.

But just as she begins to find joy again, Hideaki reappears, forcing Takako to rely once again on her uncle, whose own life has begun to unravel. Together, these seeming opposites work to understand each other and themselves as they continue to share the wisdom they’ve gained in the bookshop.

Here’s the set-up:
Hollis Shaw’s life seems picture-perfect. She’s the creator of the popular food blog Hungry with Hollis and is married to Matthew, a dreamy heart surgeon. But after she and Matthew get into a heated argument one snowy morning, he leaves for the airport and is killed in a car accident. The cracks in Hollis’s perfect life—her strained marriage and her complicated relationship with her daughter, Caroline—grow deeper.

So when Hollis hears about something called a “Five-Star Weekend”—one woman organizes a trip for her best friend from each phase of her life: her teenage years, her twenties, her thirties, and midlife—she decides to host her own Five-Star Weekend on Nantucket. But the weekend doesn’t turn out to be a joyful Hallmark movie.

The husband of Hollis’s childhood friend Tatum arranges for Hollis’s first love, Jack Finigan, to spend time with them, stirring up old feelings. Meanwhile, Tatum is forced to play nice with abrasive and elitist Dru-Ann, Hollis’s best friend from UNC Chapel Hill. Dru-Ann’s career as a prominent Chicago sports agent is on the line after her comments about a client’s mental health issues are misconstrued online. Brooke, Hollis’s friend from their thirties, has just discovered that her husband is having an inappropriate relationship with a woman at work. Again! And then there’s Gigi, a stranger to everyone (including Hollis) who reached out to Hollis through her blog. Gigi embodies an unusual grace and, as it happens, has many secrets.

The Five-Star Weekend is a surprising and captivating story about friendship, love, and self-discovery set on Nantucket. It will be a weekend like no other.
