The Pulitzer Prize-winning epic of the Great Depression, a book that galvanized—and sometimes outraged—millions of readers: The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck

The Grapes of Wrath

by John Steinbeck
Everyday Price: $11.99
Here’s the set-up:
The Grapes of Wrath takes place during America’s Great Depression, which lasted from the Stock Market Crash of October 1929 until World War II began 12 years later. During this time, a long period of drought and high winds affected large parts of the American Midwest, including much of the state of Oklahoma, creating what was called the Dust Bowl. Many of the people in the lower Midwest moved elsewhere, hoping to find fertile land on which to make a living. Tom Joad is the protagonist, or main character, of The Grapes of Wrath. Tom is the book’s hero as well despite the fact that Tom attacks a policeman at one point in the novel and beats a man at another point, becoming a cave-dwelling fugitive as a result. Tom’s actions, although illegal according to the letter of the law, are morally just.

How to Cook Without a Book, Completely Updated and Revised: Recipes and Techniques Every Cook Should Know by Heart: A Cookbook

by Pam Anderson
4.6 stars – 178 reviews
Text-to-Speech: Enabled
Here’s the set-up:

New York Times bestselling author Pam Anderson updates her classic cookbook—which put “cooking by heart” on the map—to include modern flavors and new techniques that today’s home cooks will love, with new and original full-color photographs.

It’s been 17 years since the blockbuster How to Cook Without a Book was published, and Pam Anderson’s method of mastering easy techniques to create simple, delicious meals is even more relevant today. From the working professional who loves cooking to the busy family member trying to get dinner on the table, today’s modern home cook wants to master useful techniques and know how to stock pantries and refrigerators to pull together delicious meals on the fly.

Understanding that most recipes are simply “variations on a theme,” Pam innovatively teaches technique, ultimately eliminating the need for recipes. The new edition will reflect ingredients and techniques home cooks love to use today: chicken dishes are revamped by using thighs instead of boneless skinless breasts; hearty, dark greens like kale and swiss chard replace hearts of Romaine in salads; roasted Brussels sprouts and sweet potatoes move from side dish to the main event in more meatless entrees; plus, tips for creating a whole meal using one pot or one sheet pan (instead of dirtying multiple dishes). Each chapter contains helpful at-a-glance charts that highlight the key points of every technique and a master recipe with enough variations to keep you going until you’ve learned how to cook without a book.

Violent Graduation is the first book in a brand new series.

It’s easy to ignore dangerous issues while you’re studying at the Royal Space Navy’s academy, until a sniper attempts to assassinate you.

The scar across the side of Jack’s head is the visible price. The risk to his friends at the academy is the hidden price. His challenge is how to balance the risks.

The final stage of his training is a shakedown cruise on an old minesweeper, barely able to achieve FTL entry and exit.
Midway through their cruise, the minesweeper collides with an ancient alien wreck, ripping the sides off the starship. Jack’s team of bots help seal the combined wreck to prevent air loss. Ghost, a nanolife form from the alien wreck, provides assistance.

Jack and his girlfriend, Sofia, are the only survivors, and air, food, and supplies are critical.

The countdown of days to survive is ticking.

No wonder the Royal Family are angry.

And there’s still a price on Jack’s head.

Here’s the set-up:

Dealing with ghosts is easy. It’s dealing with the living that keeps me hiding in the shadows.

Until Now.

No one knows how a record number of cold cases are solved in Billson, Mississippi. No one knows that my psychic abilities are responsible for providing the clues to solve these dead files. And certainly no one knows that I’m the person providing the tips to my godfather at the local PD.

That is until an attempt on my godfather’s life puts him in the ICU.

I’m willing to give up my anonymity to help solve this case if Detective Mason Spencer would only believe me, but convincing him proves harder than dealing with the dead.

With my godfather’s life hanging in the balance, I’m forced to work with one skeptical detective and one conniving criminal. My psychic gifts couldn’t save my parents, but I’m determined to unmask this perpetrator before he strikes again, killing the only family I have left.
