Here’s the set-up:

What does it feel like to stare into the face of madness? Or to anticipate your own? Would you drive away your only love? Could you pretend it didn’t matter? How far would you go to protect a friend, or to avenge a death?

Ten years ago, Devon gave up the love of her life, fearing she would one day fall victim to the mental illness that has slowly ravaged the mind of her mother, who is now being cared for in a private facility.

Just when it seems Devon might have a chance to make up for past mistakes, her best friend Cass becomes a suspect in the murder of her sister’s drug-dealing boyfriend. Devon knows Cass is lying about the details of her involvement and the lead detective on the case, convinced that Cass is guilty, is relentless in his pursuit of justice.

When her mother’s young, emotionally disturbed roommate insinuates she knows something about the night of the murder, as well as details from Devon’s own life that no one else is privy to, Devon becomes desperate to uncover the truth before Detective Lake does. As the investigation continues, Devon is led down a path she never expected and forced to face her greatest fears of life and love.

Tangled in a web of lies, regrets and questions, can she find a way to let go of the past and start again? And, once the mystery is solved, can she live with the secrets she’s uncovered?

Join author Devon Pearse in this semi-autobiographical journey through the most heartbreakingly beautiful and deceptively mysterious events of her own life and the lives of those closest to her.

Review
“…A story of deception, betrayal, and facing the mistakes of one’s past while dealing with the future, “A Lighter Shade of Gray” is a riveting read that has much to make readers think.” —Midwest Book Review (Oregon, WI USA)

About The Author

While A Lighter Shade of Gray is a work of fiction, Devon Pearse has intertwined many semi-biographical elements into the story as well.

In researching the novel, Pearse spent a great deal of time reflecting on her own life, and the lives of her closest friends.

One of the things she discovered is that not all things are black and white.

This gray area is the lifeblood of A Lighter Shade of Gray, which takes us on a psychological journey into love, sanity and justice.

Here’s the set-up:

A new thriller from the author of the Amazon.com bestselling Alice in Deadland trilogy.

When there were still people around to talk to, I would introduce myself as a drinker with a writing problem. It sounded witty at the time, and certainly got a smile once in a while from the ladies. None of that matters now. There are no people left to read my books, and nobody left to listen to my attempts at wit.

Now it’s just me, sitting in my house on the hill, watching the undead rampage through what we humans once called our world. I sometimes wonder why I still live when those much younger, stronger, smarter and fitter than me perished. Maybe it’s just dumb luck. But maybe I am being left alive for a purpose. Nobody may have cared much for my novel, but maybe this is what I was meant to write. Maybe this is what I was meant to be.

The chronicler of the undead.

This is my story.

Here’s the set-up:

Livie Saunders is fluent in the language of flowers; she taught the meanings to her fiancé, Cotton O’Dell, but then Cotton vanishes without explanation on their wedding day forcing Livie to learn the language of desolation. Heartbroken, she buries her wedding gown beneath a garden pond and resolves to move on, but there are nights when she slips . . . into a sequined red dress and a pair of stiletto heels, a stranger’s bed, a little anonymous oblivion that is not without consequence. Still, she recovers a semblance of ordinary life and imagines she is content. But then, six years later, Cotton returns and her carefully constructed world shatters. The old questions bite like flies. Questions that Cotton O’Dell prays he can answer. He prays that Livie, whom he has never stopped loving, will be moved to forgive him. But there is more than Livie to be concerned about. There is Cotton’s act of cowardice that caused him to become a fugitive in the first place . . . that crime he committed for which the legal clock is still ticking. That thing he did that will shock Livie to her core once she learns of it. Livie is desperate to trust Cotton, but then he goes missing again. Time telescopes, avenues of escape close, and as lives hang in the balance, choice dithers between mercy and revenge. And a decision that will take only a moment will carry the consequences of a lifetime.

THE NINTH STEP is a story of redemption, of being brought to your knees in the sober light of day to face a monstrous error and yet somehow finding the strength to stand up, to try and make it right. Even if that decision breaks your heart, endangers your freedom and ultimately threatens your life.

The Quest of the Thirteen

by John DeFilippis

5.0 stars – 9 Reviews
Text-to-Speech and Lending: Enabled
Here’s the set-up:

Life in the Kingdom of Mavinor was always lived according to “The Scrolls,” a set of holy documents written by men but believed to be inspired by a deity known as “The Author.” When the people of Mavinor were attacked by the army of a neighboring kingdom (Xamnon), every copy of The Scrolls was destroyed in the war. Despite countless hours of labor, the task of reproducing them remained far from complete, and their society slowly but surely began to unravel. King Onestus, childless and very ill, sees his kingdom crumbling before his very eyes but feels helpless to reverse the trend. In his darkest hour, he receives a sign…a breakthrough in The Scrolls achieved by the scribes. Believing it to be authentic, Onestus announces that he will assemble a group of thirteen men to undertake a prophesied quest to return a sacred medallion to the kingdom. The quest will ultimately decide his successor, the one whom The Author has chosen to rule Mavinor and lead it back to prosperity.

“The Quest of the Thirteen” is the story of how a select group of very different men learn to work together: experienced warriors, a scholar, a rich man, a fisherman, young men aspiring to make something of themselves…all thrown together against nearly impossible odds. They cross rugged terrain, battle mythical creatures, and experience death-defying adventures as their world expands further and further beyond the boundaries they once knew. Despite countless external threats, in the end it is the internal conflict they must master in order to achieve their goal and save Mavinor.

One Reviewer Notes

“The Author’s story was well written and kept me fully engaged. The story of 13 would be heroes on a quest for their King. This story kept me reading from start to finish with a great story line and original characters. There was never a dull moment. I recommend this to any reader.” – Amazon Reviewer, 5 Stars
