Here’s the set-up:
A solid first entry of a promising, imaginative new young-adult fantasy series featuring a well-crafted character.” – KIRKUS

Deadly secrets have been buried in the Cascade mountain wilderness for centuries. Hidden. Out of sight and out of mind.

Until today…

Warren Wilkes, age 13, doesn’t like what a greedy housing developer has done to his peaceful mountain community, so he vandalizes the developer’s property, flees into the wild, and stumbles upon an ancient human skeleton revealed by torrential rain. More than old bones have been exposed, however, and the curious artifact Warren finds makes him question his own identity, and his connection to an ancient terror. A terror destined to rise again and annihilate all that Warren loves. He must fight or see his whole world destroyed.

What Readers Are Saying About THE GAIA WARS

“I am now going to purchase this series for myself and my son, who loves to read. He even put down his beloved Star Wars for this series and that is huge!” – Brandie Lagarde, Louisiana.

The Volunteer

by Barbara Taylor Sissel

4.2 stars – 4 Reviews
Text-to-Speech and Lending: Enabled
Here’s the set-up:

In the fall of 1999, psychologist Sophia Beckman is compelled by the court to give testimony on behalf of a death row inmate that results in his sentence being overturned. Haunted by secrets from her past, she avoids the media spotlight as much as possible, but soon, other prisoners’ families come seeking her assistance. One family in particular, the wife, children, and brother of Jarrett Capshaw, is especially insistent. Forty-one days ago Jarrett’s request to die was granted by the State of Texas, and he became a dead man walking, a man they call a volunteer.

Jarrett’s crimes were unusual, involving the theft of precious Mayan antiquities. Murder was never part of the plan, but murder is what happened. He pulled the trigger, and as little as he feels prepared for it, as much as he struggles with matters of the soul, he’s ready to die. It is the only way his family and the families of his victims will be free to move on. While Jarrett labors to find the words to say good-bye to those he has loved, Sophia finds herself drawn into a relationship with his wife and oldest son. It is Jarrett’s family she can’t resist and there will be a price to pay. But not even Sophia could have foreseen the outcome when the brutal truth is exposed, the unalloyed facts that, incredibly, will deliver Jarrett’s fate straight into her hands.

The Volunteer is a story about families, how they are made, and how in one single, horrifying instant, they can be broken. It is a story about mothers and the lies they tell to protect their children, to keep them from being hurt. But what happens when the truth comes out anyway and nothing and no one is spared? Sometimes the truth has the power to break your heart, and in Sophia’s case it will also endanger her freedom and threaten everything she has ever believed about her life.

Here's the set-up:

Sometimes, love is the hardest lesson of all...

Despite her imminent debut, Miss Winifred Langston has no interest in trying on expensive ball gowns, learning intricate dance steps, or perfecting the one piece she can play on the pianoforte. Freddie would rather don a pair of breeches and go target shooting, fishing, or horseback riding—astride—than be anywhere near a ballroom or high tea. Rather than waste the last few days of her freedom on such pursuits, she invites her two closest friends to join her in one final caper.

When Conrad Pearce learns of Freddie’s plans, he decides it’s past time to teach his younger brother’s partner-in-crime a well-deserved lesson. But when he intercepts her, disguised as a highwayman, to demonstrate how dangerous and ill-advised her stunts are, he can’t resist the sensual beauty hidden beneath the maddening tomboy’s exterior. What began as one sort of lesson becomes quite another, as Conrad embarks on a comprehensive erotic tutorial of his surprisingly enthusiastic and adept student.

Now, he only has to convince the irrepressible Freddie to trade her breeches and madcap ways for the gowns and domesticity she despises.

Morin’s debut novel has a notably effective structure [and] the ending is exceptional…An imposing first novel with a protagonist whose disorientation is so thoroughly illustrated that readers’ senses will smolder before it’s over.
~ Kirkus Reviews

Gerry Burns, a former U.S. Marine and Iraq war veteran, walks into a police station one morning and confesses to the murders of several local residents, but the only thing is, Gerry can’t remember killing any of them. Diagnosed with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD ), Gerry has not only has lost the ability to control his actions, but also his ability to remember.  Flashbacks from the war haunt Gerry’s daily life with increasing and alarming regularity. The trauma of losing friends in battle, the fear of rocket attacks during the night, and the anxiety of bombs exploding on the side of the road all contribute to the psychological strain consuming him. With a flip of the switch Gerry can turn any one of these emotions on and just as quickly turn it off. The only problem is he can’t control when or where it happens.

Gerry and his wife, Ashley, leave military life and relocate to a sleepy New England town so Gerry can attend college. Soon thereafter, Gerry runs into two local hooligans and leaves them bloodied and broken. Problem is, Gerry doesn’t remember a thing. Ashley is convinced PTSD is responsible for Gerry’s actions, but Gerry disagrees. When one of Gerry’s study partners goes missing, then his former boss, Gerry begins to worry. At first glance it appears nothing more than a coincidence, but as more people with ties to Gerry disappear, he starts to think otherwise, especially when the two locals he beat up turn up dead.

Kindle Nation Daily Bargain Book Alert! Karen Lenfestey’s Family Drama A SISTER’S PROMISE – Now Just $2.99 and Currently Free for Amazon Prime Members via Kindle Lending Library

A Sister’s Promise

by Karen Lenfestey

3.6 stars – 32 Reviews
Text-to-Speech and Lending: Enabled
Here’s the set-up:

Kate Hopper can list a million reasons why she doesn’t have kids. No, more like reasons why she shouldn’t have kids: genetics, a dysfunctional family, and ultimately, the fear that she wasn’t cut out to be June Cleaver or Carol Brady or Claire Huxtable. TV moms always made it look so easy, but Kate knows better.

When Kate’s little sister, Joely, refuses a medical treatment because it will leave her infertile, Kate is willing to say anything to save her sister’s life—even promising to have a baby. Kate decides to keep her rash words a secret from her husband until she can figure out whether she really wants to be a mother. Especially since they agreed their marriage would remain childless.

A sister’s promise and a wife’s promise: Kate must break one. Should she risk everything she has for the unknown?

As a full time mother who recently gave up a 14 year career to stay home with my baby, this book really spoke to me! I rarely have time to read an internet post let alone read an entire novel; yet, I could not put this book down. I pulled my first non-baby related all-nighter just to finish it! The characters in this story expertly drew me in to topics I myself struggled with as many women today do. The story speaks to you no matter where you stand on career, motherhood, family, and friendship. The characters are very believable and relatable. This is an excellent read and very relevant to today’s woman. If you enjoy Jennifer Weiner, Emily Giffin, or Sinead Moriarty, you will love this book!
