Here’s the set-up:

In the Fall of 1955, the state of Nevada used the electric chair to execute a prisoner for the first time.

It was also the last time.

Molly Blackburn, nicknamed Jane the Ripper by the Las Vegas press after killing eleven men while posing as a prostitute, was strapped to the chair without incident. The switch was flipped.

Everything after that went horribly wrong.

Since that day, a copycat Jane the Ripper has appeared almost every decade in a different city, mimicking Molly’s choice in victims as well as her methods of murder. She kills eleven men then disappears, never to be found. The similarities between the bodies left behind each decade is uncanny. As if they are all the victims of the same murderer, not a copycat.

But that’s impossible, of course, because Molly Blackburn is dead, her execution witnessed by a dozen people.

FBI Agent Jack Shaw, the lead investigator in the Jane the Ripper cases since the seventies, finally catches a break in 2009 when the intended fifth victim manages to turn the tables on the newest copycat . Everyone believes that the horror has finally ended with her capture. Shaw is not so sure, though, wondering if someone else will take up the mantle and kill seven more men to complete the cycle. But when no more bodies with her distinctive markings show up over the next two years, Shaw allows himself to believe that maybe he has seen the end of the Jane the Ripper murders.

As it turns out, what he thought was the end was only the beginning.

His hunt will take him across the country, and even when he thinks he’s finally discovered the truth, he quickly learns that not everything is as it seems.

That not every monster is created equal.

That the nature of good and evil is not as black and white as he has always believed.

That not everything that is broken can be put back together.

That not every fractured soul can be saved.

When blood, smoke and ashes rise, no one comes out the same on the other side.

Here’s the set-up:

Child Abuse at its Darkest
Love at its Blindest

At eight-years-old, Tuesday’s childhood is forever lost when tragedy sends her family spiraling out of control into irrevocable dysfunction. Almost overnight, she’s singled out from her siblings, blamed for her family’s problems and targeted for unspeakable abuse. Suddenly the loving environment she’s come to know becomes an endless nightmare of twisted punishments, as she’s forced to confront the dark cruelty lurking inside the mother she idolizes and accept the cold betrayal of the father she believes will save her. Based on a true story, Call Me Tuesday recounts with raw emotion a young girl’s physical and mental torment at the mercy of the monster in her mother’s clothes–a monster she doesn’t know how to stop loving. Tuesday’s story will not only open your eyes to the hidden horrors of child abuse, it will also tug at your heartstrings while reminding you of the power of a child’s unconditional love for her parents.

Reviews

“…Author Leigh Byrne has written a story that will unsettle readers, for in every town everywhere, there are mothers who are lesser or equal versions of Rose Storm. ~ Alice D. for Reader’s Favorite

“We are carried along, not able to put the book down – not wanting to hear more at times for it becomes almost too difficult to hear – but having to see it through, for we have come too close to Tuesday’s inner turmoil than to desert her now” ~ David Lloyd, Virtual Muser eBook Review

“The horror of the scenes is heightened by the author’s simple, straight-forward style… the prose is clean and flows well and the voice is tragically honest without being melodramatic.” ~ Mayra Calvani, Blogcritics

“…a horrifying story inspired by true-life experience…well-written…the prose so vividly and evocatively portrays suffering.” ~ Kirkus Reviews

“Despite the disturbing subject matter, the writing is well-crafted but never emotionally manipulative or maudlin, which made this a surprisingly enjoyable read.” ~Online Book Club

About The Author

Leigh Byrne PhotoI am the author of Call Me Tuesday, a book based on my true-life experience as a victim of extreme mental and physical child abuse. I share my story with hopes of offering inspiration to others who have suffered in a similar way, and to add to the awareness of some of the often overlooked signs of abuse in children, particularly that of the “scapegoat child,” a phenomenon in which one child is singled out from a sibling group and punished for all the family’s problems.

My childhood was rough, my past dark, but today, I am ridiculously happy with my peaceful life in Indiana, where I am surrounded by supportive friends and loved ones. Though not without struggle, I have come to this place of peace and happiness by learning to put the past behind me, and to take delight in the abundance of simple pleasures before me–little things like the trusting smile of a child, sunlight through stained-glass windows, the first red tulips of spring, and the occasional stiff margarita.

Where secrets collide…

Shortly after university researchers Diane and Vincent Rose join a prosperous Houston biotech company, Vincent begins seeing hints of darkness in their new workplace and records his suspicions as if they are scientific data.

When Vincent vanishes during a yacht race off the coast of Texas, Diane Rose makes the stark discovery that another BRI scientist disappeared just months before. Is there a connection? Devastated but determined to uncover the truth, she trades her microscope for binoculars and master keys—unaware she’s being watched.

Drawing on her research skills, she covertly investigates BRI’s enigmatic staffers: an animal rights extremist with destructive tendencies, a disgraced scientist with ulterior motives, a shadow employee with dangerous secrets to protect and a sadist who gets his thrills through animal torture.

But the hunter becomes the hunted. On the run, Diane follows an international trail of secret societies, ill-fated lovers, greed and murder; all the while fighting an attraction to one of the world’s most powerful men—a man who wants to bed her or kill her—or both.
One Reviewer Notes:
The story revolves around a ethnobiologist, Diane Rose. Her studies of obscure plants produce medicines helpful to people. She and her husband choose to research through an organization, Bayside Research. Several deaths surround biologists at this organization and Diane's husband becomes suspicious about what is going on... The characters are realistic, the plot is involved, and the resolution was satisfying. The author was fair in portraying all the elements of the story and it's resolution early in the novel, not pulling any surprises to resolve the plot. The ethical considerations faced by Diane are plausible in this day and age. I wonder if there aren't deals made similar to ones mentioned in the book.

4.5 stars – 12 Reviews

Here’s the set-up:

After a terrible tragedy, a parent-teacher-student confrontation leads to the discovery of two new worlds. This occurs in the “Susquehanna Territory” in northeastern PA in a future time in the 21st century when EMP has mysteriously destroyed all electrical power–presumably worldwide. To survive, with circumstances much better in a rural area, a “wall” has been built to keep away outsiders as mayhem occurs everywhere. There’s a strong suspicion of some encounter with another world. Atheistic honor vies against Christian honor in the P-T-S confrontation, and the role Christian faith plays, and the “missionary” responsibility (if any is appropriate) has to be carefully considered. Curious old stories must be investigated and set alongside the Bible. Several young romances occur, and life-and-death decisions can’t be avoided. The possibility of a one-way trip to another world looms. If you could go, would you? And what would you say? What would you do? Such affect the choices that two high school seniors must make.

One Reviewer Notes

“What a cleverly written, timely book! In our age of technology and interdependance, what would happen if suddenly all our “modern toys” we depend on malfunctioned – due to cosmological conditions? Fascinating speculation. Layers of thoughtful insights into what is really happening and what is really important. A fun, light read (a page-turner). Yet, on second thought… there’s much to think about! Entertaining, educational, provocative!” – Amazon Reviewer, 5 Stars

Editorial Reviews

“In Reznik’s debut novel, a woman confronts long-buried secrets when an old college friend commits suicide. . . . While effective as a page turner, the novel also tells a timeless, universal tale of a woman’s journey toward self-acceptance. An exciting tale of past crimes and dangerous friendships.” –Kirkus Reviews

★★★★★ “I love a mystery and I love stories about the late 60’s/early 70’s and this book has both. Really fun read.” –Barbara Gaines, Executive Producer, The Late Show with David Letterman

★★★★★ “Lara Reznik masterfully creates a story that brings the past and present together seamlessly. . . .
